Work Text:
“Yamato-san? Why are you still awake?”
Sougo almost chuckles at the way the mentioned man jumped in surprise upon hearing his voice in the middle of the night. Yamato, who was characteristically sitting on the couch with a can of beer in his hand, immediately turns his head back to meet Sougo’s curious eyes.
“You scared me, you little--” Yamato sighs when Sougo purses his lips to stifle his laugh. “Couldn’t sleep yet.” He simply answers the younger’s question before turning his gaze back to the television that was playing a movie.
He takes a sip of his cold beer before asking back, “And you?”
“I’m... working on something. I just went to get some water.” Sougo softly answers as he opens the refrigerator and fetches what he needs.
Silence wrapped around them, but it wasn’t at all awkward. They’d been friends long enough to not get awkward at the lack of conversation between them. Sougo was essentially reserved and everyone knows that, and Yamato wasn’t really the type to initiate a conversation or keep it going.
Most of the time, when the adults of IDOLiSH7 are together, it’s Mitsuki who makes sure they’re talking about something, anything. Sometimes it’s about work, like the new movie Yamato is filming or the part in Sougo’s latest song where he’s completely clueless of what the lyrics should be. Sometimes it’s about the younger members, like how Tamaki is greatly improving his school performance or how Iori is definitely in love with Riku and he just doesn’t want to admit it. Sometimes it’s even about their seniors and juniors, like how catchy TRIGGER’s new song is or how there’s this new cute idol group whose leader seems to be crushing on Mitsuki.
Sougo remembers to this day how Yamato ‘jokingly’ sulked about it that one time, saying things like “I see, I’m not the only leader who’s not immune to Mitsuki-san’s cuteness after all” , to which Mitsuki responded to him with light, drunken punches to his chest. It wasn’t rare to see the two of them bickering, but it seemed different to Sougo. Mitsuki was acting annoyed but he was glowing practically as bright as the moon, and Yamato was smiling so fondly as if basking in the younger’s soft light. It almost looked like a scene from a movie where the protagonist would realize that he’s been in love all along. Sougo felt like he saw something he shouldn’t, something so private. Something so special.
“Mitsuki-san isn’t home yet, right?” Sougo speaks up as he places his glass on the sink.
Yamato glances at him for a while, looking surprised, before he answers, “Yeah. He told me he was gonna be out at a drinking party with Momo-san and other seniors.”
“You’re actually waiting for him to come home, aren’t you, Yamato-san?” Sougo smiles softly, meeting Yamato’s stunned eyes with his tranquil ones. They stare at each other for a while, Sougo patiently waiting for Yamato’s answer while the latter tries to search for his words.
“... Sou shouldn’t go around teasing onii-san like this.” He finally says.
Sougo lets a chuckle escape his lips. “I’m only asking, though.” He answers.
Yamato sighs and turns his gaze back to the movie, “To answer your question, yeah. Isn’t it normal for a good leader to wait for his member to come home though?”
“Well, yes... but you weren’t exactly the type of a good leader who’d do that willingly to me.” Sougo laughs, suddenly feeling brave enough to tease the older.
Yamato looks back at him with an edgeless glare, but he immediately turns his expression into a hurt one that’s so obviously fake. “Your mental image of me hurts me so much, Sou. How could you all think of me like that when you know I care for you guys more than I care for myself?” He wails.
Sougo’s smile remains calm on his lips. “It’s not that, Yamato-san! We know you care for us, and we’re thankful. It’s just that, Mitsuki-san is special to you, isn’t he? So you’re willing to do all of this for him, when you’d usually be asleep if not drunk before 10 P.M.”
Yamato looks at him with a defeated expression, “Since when did you get this cheeky? Have we been raising you wrong?”
Sougo finally lets his laughter out. His chest feels light, and his heart is fluttering. “But I learned all of this from you, though?” He jokes.
Yamato chuckles. “So I guess this is karma for teasing you with Tsunashi-san?”
“Maybe.” Sougo shrugs, a slight smirk on his kind face.
Yamato takes one more sip of his beer. They let comfortable silence wrap around them for a while until Yamato speaks up. “I guess you wouldn't believe me even if I deny it now, huh?”
Sougo was expecting the answer, and yet he still felt his heart jump. He smiles softly as images of Mitsuki flashed into his mind.
He was undeniably bright, no matter where he went and what he did. He can simply be standing there but you can definitely feel his warmth radiating to you. With his kind words and deeds, he has supported each one of them, erasing all doubts and fears with his gentle voice.
It all makes sense - how much Yamato was willing to change and do things he normally wouldn’t for Mitsuki’s sake, that is, because Mitsuki deserves nothing less than that.
“I’ll be rooting for the both of you, Yamato-san.” Sougo sincerely says as he turns back on his heel to leave the common area.
Yamato looks back at him and smiles, “Thanks, Sou. Although, for now, let’s keep it a secret between the two of us, alright?” He winks.
Sougo laughs. “Of course.”
Sougo leaves the common area just as quietly as he went in. This leaves Yamato all alone with only his thoughts of bright eyes and orange hair, his red face, and his racing heart to accompany him. Thankfully, he’s not alone for too long.
Just a few minutes before the clock struck half an hour after midnight, he received a message on his phone that was placed on the table.
From: Momo-san
Yamato! Forgive this senpai for messaging you this late >< Okarin is currently driving me home and we’re dropping your husband off at your dorm ;D he’s drunk and I highly doubt he’d be able to get past your hallway at this point tho, so please be a kind husband and meet us outside to fetch him! We’ll be there in a few, thanks a lot !! ^__^

He almost rubs his temple upon reading the message. Just when did Momo even start to refer to Mitsuki and him as husbands. Putting that aside, he remembered Mitsuki telling him he’d be careful and he’d not get too drunk with his seniors before leaving the dorm practically skipping, but he’s apparently coming home drunk anyway. Yamato sighs. Is this how Mitsu always feels when he gets so drunk he passes out on the couch?
He stands up anyway. He can almost hear Sougo’s voice again, asking him, Mitsuki-san is special to you, isn't he ? and he lets a small smile rest on his lips. Mitsuki deserves to be treated special, he decides, so he doesn’t mind going out in the middle of the night just to fetch him.
He heads outside and the midnight breeze greets him. He didn’t have to wait too long though, he silently thanked the heavens. A familiar car almost immediately enters his vision and approaches him. When it stopped, the window rolled down and revealed Momo, smiling at him as if apologizing.
“Hey, Yamato! Really sorry for waking you up at this hour.” He speaks up.
“Ah, no, it’s fine. I-I wasn’t really asleep yet anyway,” Yamato politely answers and he instantly sees the formation of a teasing smirk on Momo’s lips upon his indirect confession that he was waiting for Mitsuki to come home. He sighs inwardly, “If anything, I should apologize for your trouble getting Mitsu home. I’ll take care of him from now.”
Momo kindly chuckles, “It’s alright! I was the one who invited him anyway. Wait a sec, I’ll get your husband off the car.” He says before closing the window and opening the door instead. Before Yamato could even protest about the way he called Mitsuki, he was already pulling the said man out of the car.
He truly could barely even stand. Yamato sighs as he gently catches him in his arms from Momo. Deciding it was easier to carry him bridal style, he smoothly moves his arm under the younger’s knees and literally lifts him off the ground. He wasn’t light, but he wasn’t that heavy either, to Yamato’s delight. Mitsuki was surprised, opening his eyes all of a sudden, but when he meets Yamato’s own, he visibly relaxes and latches his arms onto the older’s neck instead.
“Yamato-san… Why’re you h-here…” he murmurs as he presses his head into Yamato’s shoulder, closing his eyes again.
Yamato sighs, “Apparently one of my members got too drunk to the point he can’t walk anymore. I’m being a good leader, that’s why I’m here.”
Mitsuki lets out a drunk giggle. “ Ikemen .” He mutters, clearly too drunk to be embarrassed of what he’s saying in front of Momo. Momo, of all people, to Yamato’s horror, who was watching them right now with a wide smile on his face.
“Watching the both of you makes me want to run into Yuki’s arms too! Uwaaa!”
Yamato nervously chuckles. “I’m sure he’s gonna be happy to catch you, Momo-san.” He says.
Momo laughs and gets inside the car. “Of course! He’s my darling after all! Well then, I’m off now! Take care of him nicely, leader!” he says. Yamato only answers him with a polite nod. The car door was finally closed and mere seconds after the car was driving away from his vision already.
Yamato lets out another sigh as he walks inside the dorm again, this time, with Mitsuki in his strong arms.
He gently places him on the couch once they enter the common area.
“Can you take off your shoes, Cinderella?” Yamato gently asks.
Mitsuki opens his eyes and stares at him for a while, face red yet blank. “Or do you want this Prince Charming to do it for you?” He laughs out loud when Yamato kneels in front of him, while the older one only looks at him fondly.
“I- I can manage, thanks anyway!” Mitsuki mutters as he starts to take off his shoes. Yamato stands up and turns off the TV. He also started to take away the bottles of beer on the table. When he spares a glance at Mitsuki on the couch, the younger was intently looking at him.
“Need anything?” Yamato softly asks.
Mitsuki shakes his head, his mind spinning, and he doesn’t even know if it’s still because of the alcohol, or because Yamato looks incredibly attractive right now for some reason. He doesn’t have to think about it too much when Yamato finally finishes cleaning up and goes to carry him again without a word.
Mitsuki wasn’t surprised this time around, but there was still a giggle that came out from his pink lips as he wrapped his arms around Yamato, as if it’s so natural for the two of them to be this close.
Yamato looks at him with tired eyes, but there’s a smile on his face nonetheless, “You’re enjoying this, aren’t you.”
Mitsuki hums joyfully, “Seeing Yamato-san like this feels… different,” he says as he cups Yamato’s cheeks into his hands, “So even you can act like a nice husband once in a while. Ahahaha! So cute!”
Yamato glares at him to show annoyance but the grin on his lips says otherwise. “What are you talking about, aren’t I always a nice husband to you, Mitsu?”
Mitsuki laughs, his face is red, and Yamato wonders if it’s because of the alcohol or because of the way their bodies are so close right now as they joke about being married. “No, you’re not! I’m always the one spoiling you!”
Yamato lets out a chuckle of his own as he opens the door to Mitsuki’s bedroom. He hopes none of the members are still awake to hear them talking like this, because he certainly does not want this moment to end anytime soon.
“Allow this onii-san to spoil you right now, then.”
