Mascarpone Honey Toast

Summary:

Working at the biodome has its perks, like being able to have a cute picnic date among the beautiful, genetically-modified megaflora you created with the head scientist.

With said head scientist, of course!

(Takes place before the Eve crash-landed in the biodome.)

Notes:

I wanted to finish this before Valentines Day.

I did not.

Oh well, enjoy!

Work Text:

It was a hot, sunny day.

Not that the weather actually mattered in the biodome, its systems set to meticulously maintain the same temperature inside all year around. It was the perfect temperature, in fact, not only for Rosa's many plant specimens and Bea's bee colonies, but for a picnic.

The sunlight, streaming gold through the glass walls, was a nice touch though.

The two of them sat on a patterned picnic blanket, just sitting and chatting having finished the sandwiches they brought.

"ーand then Primo picked him up and threw him! And he went soaring across the field with his scarf trailing behind him like a comet tail!" Rosa exclaimed, throwing her hand in an arc for emphasis.

"Oh my! Was Edgar okay?" Bea asked, listening with rapt attention. Or, she would be if she wasn't painfully (blissfully?) aware of Rosa's other arm draped across her shoulders.

"Yeah, the kid's got the reflexes of a cat. You could push him outta his chair and he'd still find a way to land on his feet. ...We didn't win that game though." She sighed, slumping against Bea's side. "Primo, Edgar, and I, we're heavy hitters, but we can't do much if we can't get in close. We shouldn'ta made Sprout a thrower."

"Still, it sounds like you had fun!" Bea smiled. She pulled away from Rosa, before grabbing another box out of their picnic basket. "How do you feel about dessert?"

"Ooooh, yes please!" Rosa said, perking up in anticipation.

Bea pulled out a tupperware of something that looked like whipped cream, but way thicker, a jar of fresh honey, and some sliced bread. There was also a portable toaster in the box.

"Is that cream cheese?" Rosa asked, curious.

"Nope! It's the fancy cheese that Piper uses for tiramisu. Ma... Mars-something." Bea replied, popping some bread into the toaster.

"Huh! And here I thought it was the moon that was made of cheese." Rosa grinned.

Bea let out an undignified snort, before bursting into a fit of giggles at the joke. Rosa's grin only grew, seemingly at the achievent of making her girlfriend laugh.

"That joke was really... cheesy!" Bea replied through the giggles. At that, Rosa burst into her own bout of wonderful, hearty laughter. Be still, my beating heart, Bea sighed internally.

-pop!-

The toaster chimed cheerfully.

"Here!" Bea said, taking the the fresh slice of toast and smearing a thin layer of honey on it. Then, on went a generous dollop of the mascarpone cheese, spread over the honey. "It's simple, but I think it's tasty."

Rosa took the toast, making a show of scrutinizing it from every angle, before taking a bite.

"Oh, this is delightful." Rosa murmured with appreciation. Bea went on to fix herself a toast, taking a careful bite and savored it. Sweet, crunchy, light, with a rich tang from the mascarpone. Bea licked her lips, letting the taste bring her comfort. She knew spending the extra money on the cheese was worth it!

"Did you come up with this yourself?" Rosa asked.

"Well, I'm pretty sure I'm not the first person to think of honey on toast..." Bea said sheepishly. Rosa popped the last bite of her toast into her mouth, chewing blissfully.

"Doesn't matter to me! This is delicious, and you're still brilliant." Rosa said, with an air of finality. Bea felt her cheeks warm up. She took another, bigger, bite of her toast before she could say something silly and embarrass herself.

Suddenly, she felt a warm hand on her chin. Rosa turned her head to face her, before gently running her thumb over the corner of her lips...

...And just as Bea thought she might burst from how flustered she was, Rosa pulled away, licking a smear of mascarpone off of her thumb with a cheeky grin.

"You had a little cream on the side of your mouth," she said matter-of-factly.

"Rosa!" Bea squeaked. She was sure her face was tomato-red now, so she turned the other way with a little huff. But Rosa was laughing again, and what little annoyance Bea had melted away as quickly as it came. How could she not laugh along?

So she did. Rosa let out a little "oh!" as Bea flopped backwards onto her lap.

"This is what you get for teasing me." She said with a contented sigh.

"Well then," Rosa said, the sunlight lighting the tips of her hair molten-gold. "I suppose I should tease you more often."

They shared a honey-flavored kiss in the sun.
