Work Text:
„You’re late.“
She finds him sitting at her desk with a concerned expression on his face. Today was the day she was clearing out her desk which marks the end of her work as a detective. Lucifer knew how hard this day was for her so he insisted he would come with her. Even if she had the slight suspicion that this was just another reason for him to delay flying up to heaven and to become God. Nevertheless, she was grateful he was here with her, with him by her side it was slightly less unbearable to say goodbye to what once was. In this building, she had made so many memories. In this building, she found out who was responsible for her father’s murder. In this building, she met Dan who gave her the most beautiful daughter she could have ever asked for. In this building, she fell in love with the devil. Now, this time would come to an end, and she would take on her new job: God’s consultant. It still felt surreal thinking about it and Lucifer still had to give her some more details on what this job entails. But she also was excited about it. She wanted to be next to Lucifer on this crazy journey that is their life.
She just came back from giving back her badge and gun, which made all of this even more real. Her heart was heavy, and she was in need of a hug.
“What?”, Chloe asked him, confusion evident in her voice.
“You are late. You’re never late.”, he told her again and eyed her up and down.
“What are you talking about?”, she was growing frustrated. He had been really good this entire day at being thoughtful and making this ordeal easier for her. She had reassured him that this is what she wanted to do and that he should finally stop feeling guilty about it. Still, every time she told him this he looked like he could not believe his luck. Could not believe that she really did choose him.
But right now, he was starting to piss her off.
Instead of explaining what he meant he hold up the tiny calendar she kept in her purse.
“What are you doing with my calendar?”, now she was really starting to get pissed.
“Well, in my defense I was looking if you have anything noted down for this weekend because I planned on taking you and the urchin on a trip.”, he rambled. “But then I saw- You are never late, Chloe.”
She was so surprised by his admission that he planned on taking them somewhere her anger was forgotten already. Then she realized what he meant when he said late. Oh. Quickly she walked over to him to have a look in her calendar over his shoulder. There it was: a PS for the start of her period on the 7th of July. But she never had gotten her period. And today was the 14th of July. Since they started seeing each other Lucifer had gotten very aware of her cycle and what comes with it. Being the sweet boyfriend he was, he always made sure she was comfortable and brought Chloe her favorite snacks.
But he was right – she was never late.
“I’m sure it's just stress, Lucifer.”, she told him and took the calendar from his hands to put it back in her purse. They both knew this was most likely true. With everything that had happened in the past few weeks, it would have been a miracle if it went by her unaffected. “Plus, you were the one to tell me Angels can’t procreate.”
“Yes, I know.”, he said but still was staring at her with a thoughtful look on his face. “But you have shown before that the rules don’t apply to you.”, he suddenly said referring to his mojo.
That made her stop in her tracks. She couldn’t be pregnant, right? She thought back and remembered that she had been feeling queasy these past few mornings, but she just had explained it with anxiety over the upcoming changes. Suddenly she felt lightheaded. She bit her lip and closed her eyes for a moment, hoping her body would calm down.
“Chloe are you okay?”, when she did not respond immediately he jumped up and gently pushed her down to sit in the chair he had been occupying. “You look pale. You are not going to faint, are you?”
“No, I won’t.”, she told him and couldn’t help the smile creeping on her face. Even if he was immortal and more powerful than she could ever be, any signs of discomfort Chloe expressed made him extremely anxious. She took a deep breath and looked at her boyfriend.
“But I think I should take a pregnancy test.”, she whispered to him. Even if she was not working here anymore, people knew her. And she did not want everybody to overhear what they had been discussing.
Lucifer nodded and swallowed hard.
“But I mean it is impossible, right?”, she asked him.
“Might I remind you of my nephew?”, he answered with a pointed look.
“Right.”, they remained silent for a moment.
“Are you feeling better?”, he asked her and put a hand on her cheek, gently rubbing his thumb up and down.
“Yeah. I was just lightheaded for a second.”, she stood back up and looked back on her desk. All of her belongings were in a box standing on the desk. “Come on, let’s go.”, she told him and went to pick up the box. Lucifer slapped her hands away from it and picked it up himself as if there was nothing heavier than feathers in there. Side-by-side they left the precinct and said goodbye to colleagues on the way out. Once they sat in the Corvette in the parking deck of the precinct, Lucifer broke the silence.
“So, you think you might be…”
“Pregnant?”, she finished for him. He nodded. “It could be. I mean we weren’t exactly careful, were we?”, she joked, but the atmosphere between them was tense. Lucifer stayed silent and just looked at her with an unreadable expression.
“I know you don’t like kids.”, she stated and grabbed his hand over the console. She wasn’t trying to make him feel bad she was just trying to convey to him that she knew how he must be feeling. “But let’s not freak out until we know for sure.”
Lucifer nodded took her hand to his lips and gave it a gentle kiss before he started the car. It was a beautiful day in Los Angeles, not a cloud in the sky. Chloe watched the buildings and people flowing by as they drove. A baby was really not in their plans. When Chloe was still married to Dan, she had thought about asking him about trying for another baby but then their marriage went downhill, and she hadn’t thought about it again. However, she always wanted a sibling for Trixie. She had been an only child and spent hours trying to convince her parents to give her a sibling. When she was a teenager, her mother told her that Chloe was only conceived after years of trying and that another child had simply not been in the cards for them. Now, Chloe knew about the celestial meddling that led to her existence, something which still felt crazy to say out loud.
Lucifer drove them to the nearest pharmacy and parked directly in front of it. The entire drive he was mostly silent, but Chloe knew he wasn’t upset. Mad? No. Anxious? Hell yes.
Before Chloe could open the door Lucifer grabbed her hand and looked at her with a serious expression.
“You said I don’t like kids. And you are right. But Chloe… I am sure I would love our child. Because I love you.”, he told her, and a small but genuine smile graced his lips.
Warmth spread through Chloe’s body as she heard his concession. Ever since the war, he made sure to say it to her daily, just because he could. Still, every time he told her that he loved her, she could not help but be overcome by love for the angel in front of her. Only this time, tears sprung to her eyes. She knew he would never leave her if she really was pregnant but it worried her how he would take it. He did not have the best father figure in his life as she got to see for herself and only got around to saying those three words a month ago. But that he was sitting here and telling her he would love their child stole her breath away.
She reached for his face and brought their lips together. Once they separated, Lucifer took his thumbs and brushed away the tears that had escaped her eyes.
“I love you, too.”, she told him and underpinned her statement with another short kiss. “Come on, let’s find out.”
An hour later they were sitting on the bed in Chloe’s bedroom next to each other. Lucifer’s leg was bouncing nervously, and Chloe was fidgeting with her phone. She had taken the test and now they were waiting for the timer to go off to see the results. She took her hand and smoothed it over his thigh to stop his leg from bouncing as the timer on her phone went off. They both jumped up.
“Ready?”, she asked him, which he answered with a nod. She took his hand and intertwined their fingers as she led him to the bathroom where three different tests were waiting for them. Lucifer had insisted she would take multiple tests so, they’d be absolutely sure. They took one last look at each other’s faces before they looked at the three small plastic sticks that could change their entire life. And they would change their lives.
All three were positive. Chloe gasped and put her hand in front of her mouth. She would have never expected to see a positive pregnancy test again. But she couldn’t help but be happy about it. A tiny version of her and Lucifer. She turned to her boyfriend who was still frozen in place. He slowly reached out and took a test to look at it more closely.
“Bloody hell.”, he said and looked at her with a shocked expression. Chloe laughed and engulfed him in a tight hug which he quickly reciprocated.
“We are going to have another urchin.”, he said and put his hands on her stomach. When Chloe unclasped her arms from behind his neck, she put her hands over his. Her last remnants of worry were thrown aside when she saw the look of awe on his face as he said, “I hope it gets wings.”
Even if this wasn’t planned, the little half-angel inside her was already loved.
