Work Text:
A real time play through of a game is not something Hoseok originally imagined when he started his YouTube several years back, but he’s come to enjoy his Thursday night ritual for what it is. Consistent. Dependable. Maybe boring adjectives that meant less to him as a teen but mean everything as a twenty-something year old just trying to make it happen. His following for dance was limited, and his following for fashion even more so, but when Yoongi suggested something fun and easygoing to get him out of his creativity rut a few months back, Hoseok wouldn’t have even been able to come up with something like this.
Barbie game walk-throughs. Yoongi meant it as a lighthearted jab at his boyfriend’s tendency to flip through the closet several times a day and stand in front of the full length mirror hanging on the back of their bedroom door, sometimes locked so Yoongi couldn’t come in and make fun of him, but the series didn’t happen until Hoseok lost a silly bet.
He even named the uploaded series on his channel “I Lost A Bet To My Boyfriend.” Partly to be funny, partly to deflect the series as anything meant to be taken seriously.
Almost immediately, it generated more clicks than anything else he’d posted. From a wide demographic too. Hoseok couldn’t have planned for it, was initially a little skeptical of it, but ultimately more grateful than anything else. Even if he sometimes wishes the traffic came in for his dancing or fashion on its own, he can’t be mad about garnering the revenue from it.
Hoseok logs in and starts up his camera so he’ll be visible in the corner for his audience to interact with him. There’s already a small group waiting, so he waves with his patented Hobi smile for them as more people log on. The startup menu for the game takes up the majority of his screen, its cheery music and font bouncing as they all wait.
“Hey everyone! I’m going to give it just another minute before I start, but I have a surprise for everyone tonight!” Hoseok has a voice now for this; brighter and maybe more forced than his usual demeanor, but in some ways it’s fun, something else to put on just like his make up or accessories. It’s tailored to this, this moment and this purpose.
“You’ll all remember I started playing these games because my boyfriend asked me to, and when I lost a bet I made good on it. Tonight, he’ll be joining us!” Hoseok claps excitedly, pulling back in frame enough that Yoongi is visible when he walks into their spare room. “This is him - my Yoongi hyung!”
Immediately, comments start in.
Immediately, there is a theme to them.
Afasfas i cannot believe your boyfriend is THAT
what deathmetal band did he crawl out of?
deathmetal or dementor?
omg 2 cute. total opposites!
Hoseok looks over at his boyfriend, busy finding a comfortable spot in the terrible bean bag chair he insists they keep even though he complains that it hurts his back to sit in. When he looks at Yoongi, he sees an old man trapped in the body of a twenty eight-year-old. He forgets that others tend to hone in on the all black clothing, multiple facial piercings, and tattoos that peek out along his wrists or collarbones.
He’s fucking gorgeous, is what he is. Hoseok is obsessed with him. He reaches out to push some of the hair out of his boyfriend's eyes; Yoongi blinks up at him slowly.
Hoseok hears the comments chiming in faster now.
When they’d spoken about Yoongi finally making an appearance on Hoseok’s channel, he’d assured his hyung that he would not go easy on him. He’d be just as affectionate and clingy with him onscreen as off. There’d be nowhere to hide, and Yoongi would have to face the consequences of his smol and squishy self exposessed to the internet.
But, Yoongi’s been with him the whole time. For the past five years, they’d been together through more than one career change, several apartments, one joint pet, and Yoongi promised Hoseok he was ready to show his face on his channel. Actually, what he’d said was: “Time to stake my claim.”
Because fans always asked about a significant other, and when Hoseok mentioned a boyfriend time and time again, they clamored for more. Hoseok wasn’t sure if he wanted to share his boyfriend with anyone, let alone his online fanbase, which although mostly sweet, could still harbor some ill comments.
Yoongi gives him a little smile, one meant just for him, but of course the camera catches it from the side. For once, Hoseok can’t wait to replay this video when he uploads it - his love memorialized for all to see.
There are comments still rolling in about how cute they are together, mixed in with one that says something about them being worried that his boyfriend might eat him (Hoseok tries not to smirk at that one. It’s not even meant to be dirty.). Hoseok enters the game and rushes through a lot of the start up, because they don’t exactly need it, while he chatters on in an one-sided conversation he’s perfected with time and practice. He tries to engage his audience as much as possible, knowing full well that some people just need to hear a friendly voice at the end of their day.
The Barbie game he’s playing now is a home makeover game; it’s fun in that it’s cute and simple and really all he needs from a Barbie game. Are there plot driven Barbie games? Sure. Whatever. But let’s be real - they’re all there for the fashion makeovers.
“Okay, so I am obsessed with this skirt. It’s obviously Clueless inspired, and I knew it was included in this wardrobe, so I wore a similar one for you all today.” Hoseok pauses gameplay to stand up and show it off; it’s a yellow plaid mini skirt with matching jacket and white stockings, just like from the movie.
“Hobah, show them properly,” Yoongi grouses, catching Hoseok by the wrist. “Do a twirl. Show it off.”
Hoseok blushes but does as he’s told, spinning far enough away from the camera that the audience will see the majority of the look.
Yoongi turns towards the computer set up. “I told him that no one would look good in this color. Was I wrong.” He smirks, looking back up at Hoseok and hooking a finger at the top of his stocking.
Hoseok sees the flurry of comments scrolling up and disappearing; even if he was sitting down with his face glued to the screen, he wouldn’t be able to read them fast enough. Yoongi gently smooths the top of his stocking back down on Hoseok’s leg then runs one hand down his leg absentmindedly, the other hand going to Hoseok’s waist.
“You gonna finish this outfit?” he asks Hoseok, glancing back over at the game.
Right. Hoseok’s job is to play a game.
So strange.
“I’m going classic on the accessories for this outfit today,” he says, swiping through the shelves of shoes on screen. The outfit in the game really is very close to what he’s wearing in real life, something that he’s only more recently had the confidence to wear, and in large part due to Yoongi’s constant encouragement.
The first time Hoseok put on a dress, it was a silky black night dress. The kind of thing he could safely wear for fun around their home. Well, safely enough - Yoongi chased him through the apartment from room to room, trying to run his hands up and down all of Hoseok’s bare and smooth legs. The first time Hoseok put on a day dress, something meant to be worn out in public, was many months after that, and even then he didn’t go anywhere in it for even longer.
He still doesn’t wear them out in public much, but he does feel confident in wearing whatever he wants on his channel now. While the occasional troll emerges from time to time, overwhelmingly his fanbase reacted positively, and it brought in some new fans as well.
“Okay, but what about these trousers with that blouse?” Yoongi asks, pointing out a pair of wide cut emerald green pants on screen that Hoseok swipes through, ready for his next look. “It goes with the vintage vibe of the top.”
“Vintage vibe, huh? My goth baby wants me to put together some vintage vibes,” Hoseok teases, selecting the trousers in question. Next to him, Yoongi withdraws his hand; Hoseok wonders if he’s blushing, but if he looks over at him it would only draw more attention to the fact, so quickly grabs his boyfriend’s hand to put it in his lap as he plays.
“Ohhhh look at these earrings!” Hoseok squeals, matching some big daisy earrings to the outfit. He quickly grabs white sunglasses for her head too. “Oh wait, now inspiration has struck. Time to take it vintage into another era.”
Hoseok swipes through the bottoms until he finds the black and white checkered pants. He puts them on his character and flips until he finds a little black crop top. “Ta da! Something a little more ska influenced for my boyfriend!”
“People will think I’m into ska now,” Yoongi grumbles.
“Aren’t you?”
It’s a trick question; Yoongi is into all music. In the game, Hoseok finishes with the off brand Vans sneakers. “E-girl vibes? Skater girl? You all tell me,” he addresses the chat.
“When do I get to see you in this outfit?” Yoongi asks, leaning into Hoseok’s side a little, squinting at the monitor as if he can’t see well. Was Hoseok going to need to make him an eye appointment? Aish. This man.
“Whenever you want to take me shopping, oppa.” It’s a slip of a tongue, something Hoseok uses only jokingly in the safety of their bedroom.
But - if they thought the chat was wild before - well.
Damn.
“Uh.” Hoseok contemplates logging out without another word. Next to him, Yoongi’s shoulders shake with silent laughter.
Hoseok doesn’t know what to do or say - without meaning to, his eyes slip down to the comments rolling in.
cute goth twink marries literal sunshine
has an oppa kink arrived?
I wish I could watch them all the time.
Hoseok frowns at the last remark; not because it’s creepy - although it is - but because he’s almost positive it’s Taehyung on the stream watching. “Alright, I think that’s good for tonight! I hope you enjoyed meeting my boyfriend! Next time, I’m working on the remodel in the master bathroom in this game. Good night!”
Hoseok logs out and shuts down the game. Behind him, he can feel Yoongi laughing still. “Yah! Stop!” Hoseok kicks back at his boyfriend while he goes through the process of downloading the stream.
“Tae-ah is already texting me.” Yoongi waves his phone at Hoseok.
“Nooooo,” Hoseok moans. He doesn’t know what’s worse - Taehyung knowing about the use of oppa in their household, or Taehyung’s boyfriend knowing about the use of it. Namjoon won’t be able to look either of them in the eyes for months probably. It’s going to be an issue for Yoongi, who works with the man on a daily basis.
“For once it wasn’t me who let something slip,” Yoongi mumbles, smiling at his phone.
“What am I gonna do?” Hoseok cries, banging his head against the desk.
“Hey, hey.” Yoongi quickly steps up behind him, kissing the back of Hoseok’s neck. “It’s really not a big deal, baby. I promise you. If anything, it uh, shows a really wonderful and playful side of our relationship.”
Yoongi chuckles; Hoseok swats at him lazily. While Yoongi disappears to answer his own work emails, Hoseok finishes the download and looks through some of the comments he missed. One thing is for sure - they loved Yoongi.
And they loved Yoongi for Hoseok.
It’s kind of sweet. Almost enough to make him forget about his live slip-up.
He mopes for long enough that Yoongi reappears. He doesn’t even pause - he just walks in, picks Hoseok up in a bridal carry, and takes him out of the room, all in one smooth motion. “Time for lunch, baby.”
“I’m not done pouting,” Hoseok says, but there are chopsticks in one hand already.
“Yes, you are, because oppa is taking you out shopping in your pretty little outfit after this.” Yoongi shoves some rice in his mouth. “It’ll be the real life play through of the Barbie game.”
And Hoseok can’t complain about that.
