He was still rubbing her cheeks and staring at her as if trying to grasp what had just happened. She could hear the distant traffic noises and her own heartbeat -louder than ever.
"That day in Starbucks - I was... You were not supposed to hear it... And I panicked, I'm so, so sorry... But now I know how stupid I was... I didn't think it possible, but now I think, that maybe you... Maybe you love me too...". She glanced up at him and immediately averted her eyes. She had to take control of her feelings - it was really happening. Breath, Olive. She was relieved to have finally said it, but still a little jittery. It was out there now and she started relaxing a bit - it felt so right to finally be completely honest about her feelings. Scary and risky to be so vulnerable, but right. Like a new chapter of her life was about to begin.
He was still silent but she could see his face lighting up with understanding. "I will stop talking now..." she said softly. She took a deep breath and looked up at him.
They were quiet for a moment and then started talking at the same time "Adam, I..." - "Of course I love you, smart-ass" he said and she almost stopped breathing from the warm wave of happiness his words caused. The way he was looking at her, his handsome face beaming with joy and love, looking at her, touching her as if to make sure she was really there. "I... I didn't want you to know... which was maybe not very smart either, so I guess we're even", he said with a bashful smile. Olive laughed through the happy tears that were still streaming down her face "Yeah, we probably deserve each other". He smiled and kissed her, at last unrestrained and not holding anything back. She vaguely remembered that they were still on the sidewalk and took his hand to pull him to her apartment.
