Phantoms

Summary:

They like to visit every now and then.

Work Text:

There was someone watching her. Sidney Prescott was in danger.

She hadn’t seen who or what was spying on her. But she had heard the tapping at the window. Now, something scratched at the door.

The hairs on the back of her neck rose as she reached for her gun. She risked a glance at the window as she slowly moved towards the walls.

“Sidney, darling, I’m sure it was nothing.” Her mother’s voice called out as Sidney passed the chair where Maureen always sat.

After Mother started visiting, Sidney had covered the chair with a sheet. The shape of a mutilated corpse was better than having to look at the real thing.

“Sidney. Sidney. Why don’t you talk to me?” Maureen called out again as Sidney moved passed the chair. A shaky hand emerged from the white sheet, the dried blood almost forming an intricate pattern.

Sidney held back a gasp as she accidentally stumbled and her fingers almost grazed the edges of the sheet.

She steadied herself by grabbing onto the wall where she had hung her university poster. The scratching had stopped but Sidney knows whatever caused it will find another way in. They always do.

Derek tried to reach for her. “You stay here, Sid. I’ll go take care of it.”

Sidney gave him a sad smile as her eyes moved to the hole in his chest by instinct.

“I’ll be fine. You gave me this, remember?” She said as she fingered the letters around her neck.

The cool metal soothed her until she heard the shuffling at the steps. The scratches resumed their assault on the door.

She turned away from Derek, and with steadier steps than before, approached the entrance.

“You got this, Sid. Show ‘em.” Tatum’s voice was coming from above. Sidney knew better than to look up when Tatum was around. It got harder and harder to get the images out of her head and it would be days until Sidney would remember what she actually looked like before the massacre.

Sidney passed the TV, where Kenny always stood watching the screen blankly, even if it was turned off. She was lucky today that he wasn’t facing her; the blood from the slash on his throat never stopped oozing.

People were less friendly as she approached the door.

Mickey was laughing at her as he repeatedly stabbed Hallie, before shoving her body towards Sidney. She narrowly avoided making eye contact with her roommate’s vacant eyes and tried to block out Mickey’s jeers.

“Told ya that you can never run away, Sidney. You can run all your life but you can’t escape it.”

Stu’s voice was deafening as he joined in, “She thinks she can fight this one off too.”

They had blocked the hallway with their bodies, and leered down at her. She wordlessly pushed past them. And came face to face with the Loomis’.

Mother and son were standing on either side of the door, hate and disgust in their eyes. You couldn’t miss the family resemblance there.

Mrs. Loomis curled her lip as Sidney reached for the doorknob with shaky hands. “I hope it kills you as slowly as it did your wench of a mother."

“Don’t worry, Mom. It’ll be worse.” Billy wasn’t looking at her, but the venom in his voice made Sidney flinch. Even after all this time, she had never gotten used to that hateful tone.

“Sidney doesn’t want to die alone, after all.”

The scratches increased in intensity and Sidney yanked the door open without warning. She needed the element of surprise against whoever it was.

Except there was no one at all. Nothing but the branches of the trees rustling against the front of the house. The scratches never stopped.

She heard them laughing at her. Mocking her with their taunts like they always did. Tears in her eyes, she angrily turned back to them, gun pointed.

Except there was no one else in the house. Not a sound except for the whispering trees behind her.
