Evelyn used to tell her love was magic, love could heal. She’d caress the cut or the scrape, she’d lean in and leave a gentle kiss over the bandaged wound after she was done patching her up, and she’d tell Faith that her love held enough magic in it to fix her.
Faith always knew it was complete bullshit even at that age, the way she intrinsically knew Santa Claus was just her dad stuffing a red suit with a pillow and the tooth fairy was her mom leaving quarters on her nightstand. She’d like to believe in it now, though.

Every time he laid eye upon it, he imagined the Christ, bloody and prostrate as he paid for the sins of all mankind. Paid for the sin that began with Eve, the mother of all the men and women to come.
She hung there, radiant and beautiful, her creamy skin naked, exposed in the dim light.

“You’re dead,” Cinderella says. She stands, holds out her arms. Her hands are dark with ash. “Come warm yourself.”
Stepmother leaves bloody footsteps across the floor, staggered, perfectly shaped.

Nate kept his hands on the wheel, the orange sodium streetlights outside illuminating his face in repetitive, sweeping movements: carving his cheekbone and chin and throat out in razor-edged black, illuminating his dark hair— a millisecond of night, nothing but shape, then light again. Radio quiet. Hands on the wheel.
“You… changed,” Jules said, cheek against the seat as she looked at him. What was it about his face that had shifted? Something strange. Something she couldn’t put her finger on. Definitely not while drunk.
Dark eyes under long, slender, dark brows found hers for a moment that felt longer than it was. “So did you,” he said before aiming his gaze back out to the road.
“Not that much.”
“Nah, not that much,” he agreed, and slowed for the turn off to his house. “Me either. Not really. Not that much.”
