The muzzle of the gun was cold against his forehead, a single, circular point of reality. Nate’s entire world had narrowed to that dark, steel eye. He had tracked her across three states, fueled by a rage so pure it was the only thing that had kept him warm. He’d pictured this moment a thousand times: his hands around her throat, her eyes wide, the sound of her begging.
But Maddy wasn’t begging.
“You found me,” she said, “Took you long enough.”

The goodbye was supposed to be hers. That was the script in Nate’s head. He’d let her come over, let her cry, let her have her little scene in his sterile, perfect bedroom.
But Maddy wasn’t crying. She was calm, her movements economical as she poured him a drink. He’d taken it, arrogant, already bored.
