Junior hockey superstar Shane Hollander surprises the world (and himself) by skipping the NHL draft to play hockey at Stanford. Nobody knows why, and Shane Hollander doesn't seem inclined to explain.
Ilya Rozanov is pushed to a similar decision and ends up playing hockey for the University of Texas at Austin.
Shane starts to feel the pressure of all of his decisions boiling over and Ilya offers him an outlet.A reimagining of Heated Rivalry inspired by Deep End by Ali Hazelwood.
"For the last face off of the game, when defeat is almost inevitable but Ilya still has enough fury in his veins to play four more periods, it is just him and Hollander. Ilya zeroes in on this moment, watching Hollander play with his mouthguard out of the corner of his mouth while he looks everywhere except Ilya’s eyes.
“You are having good night, yes?” Ilya starts, “Seems like you took my advice.”
Hollander scoffs in lieu of response. Ilya chuckles.
“You do what you’re told, don’t you? I asked for a game and you gave it to me.” Ilya is rewarded with a deep red flush across Hollander's freckles. Emboldened, he adds: “What a good boy.”
