Chapter Text
Morality.
Minami watched as the mortals below lived their lives. So happy and blissfully unaware of when their time may come. Watching them do such petty things like lie, steal and cheat each other as Minami saw the clock above their head tick. It was her job as one of the angels of death. Being an angel of death was simple enough. Be around a person when they die to take them to heaven if they deserve it. Minami had been a nurse, a construction worker, a random civilian, an assistant, and more. Her job was just to get close to the person dying and when the time came, to take their life.
.
.
.
And it was getting more and more boring.
“Minami,” Ruri hummed.
“Ahh hey Ruri, Minami hummed, looking over the clouds and the world below.
“Don’t tell me you’re looking over at the humans again,” Kohaku sighed.
“Can you blame me? Their lives are so interesting,” Minami rested her chin on her palm.
“Well, I mean.. That’s one way to put it,” Ruri hesitated.
“Come on Ruri nee, the humans are liars and nothing if not flawed,” Kohaku pointed out.
“Yay but isn’t that interesting?” Minami laid down on her stomach. “Like what do they do? What makes them do what they do? There has to be some kind of reason behind their actions right?”
Kohaku groaned. “Listen, Minami, I know you just got done with training and all but they should have taught you not to think too much about them too much. I mean I hope they’ve taught you. You spend like 20 human years in teaching-,”
Minami took a second to think about what Kohaku just said. “That’s it!”
“Huh?”
“I’ll just go down there and blend in with the humans!”
“Blend in with the humans?!” Ruri repeated.
“Minami you know you can’t. It’s against the rules,” Kohaku pointed out.
“Yeah yeah but what is psychically holding me back? I have a human form and I’ve been down there a few times before,” Minami got up to her feet.
“What about our missions?” Ruri pointed out.
“I’m sure the other angels can handle it,” Minami hummed. “Plus you guys can cover for me right?”
“Minami, this is insane,” Kohaku tried to warn her.
“Maybe but just this once. To get it out of my system you know? I’ll be back before you know~!” Minami took a few steps back from the edge of the cloud. “Thank you, thank you, thank you Kohaku for the idea!”
“Hey, this wasn’t my idea,” Kohaku corrected.
“If you say so,” Minami’s heartbeat with anticipation.
“Mina don’t-,”
Minami got a running start. As She ran the clouds hit her feet. Soft and fluffy as she ran. Once she reached the edge of the cloud she jumped off into the sky.
“Minami!” Minami heard the two call after her but it was too late.
Normally Minami would dread the feeling of the wind blowing since it meant that she had to watch someone die, but now it felt freeing. The wind under her wings as she flew through the night sky. Minami found an alley to land and hide away from humans. Humans couldn’t see her in her angel form but they could in her human form and suddenly seeing a human pop up wasn’t normal in the human world. Minami looked out the alleyway and saw a couple walking in front. Above Minsami could see the cunt down over their heads.
So that’s what the humans are wearing here.
Minami copied the woman’s clothes onto herself and took her human form. It looked a lot like her angel form. Long blonde hair, brown eyes, and a gold headband in place of her halo.
Perfect. Now let’s see what the humans live like.
Minami peaked her head out the see. Her eyes were met with a bunch of lights in front of her. So many colorful lights flashing and humans walking around. Minami walked out of the alley and saw a bunch of humans walking and living their lives with no counter above them. Some were short, some were tall, some people with black hair, some people with colorful hair, some with electronics embedded in them, some in what they called “flying cars”, but they were all human. The bright lights of the city shinned and fought back the night. Humans talking on “cell phones” up to their ears. All things Minami had learned in training but rarely saw.
Ok, all I have to do is blend in with the humans.
Minami hyped herself up. Minami stepped out of the alley and blended in with the people walking.
Mission success!
Minami walks along with the crowd. Stopping when they stopped, and moving along with them. The more Minami walked the more people split off in different directions so Minami chose to follow one man in a suit. The man leads her to a part of the city with even more bright colorful light advertising their services. Minami was so in awe of everything around her she lost sight of the man she had been following. Minami took another look around for the man and lost him in the sky of guys in the area. She noticed how lost she was all of a sudden.
Oh no… Oh no.
Minami spotted an older looking man stumbling forwards towards him and decided to ask him where to go.
“Oh excuse me sir,” Minami started.
“Uhh back off you bitch. I don’t need your services,” The man slurred his words.
“You know what I am?!” Minami panicked.
“Fucking annoying,” The old man pushed past Minami and knocked her on her feet.
Why that old little-
Minami turned on her countdown vision to see when the old man’s time was coming.
“Oii watch it,” The old man groaned again but this time it wasn’t Minami’s fault.
Minami turned around to see what happened and saw a hooded figure one hand in their pockets and another out apologizing to the man.
“Sorry sorry,” The hooded figure apologized.
4 weeks 5 days 1 hour 21 minutes. Sentence to hell. Read the hooded figure countdown.
23 years 7 months 12 days 4 hours. Sentence to heaven. Read the old man’s countdown.
You have to be kidding me…
Minami turned off her countdown vision and brushed herself off.
“Need help?” The hooded figure offered their bandaged hand.
“Uhh yeah..,” Minami hesitated to take the sinner’s hand but gave in.
“Don’t mind the men like him,” The sinner pulled Minami up. “Drunk old bastards,” They clicked their tongues. “Hey, you alright?
Minami could see the sinner more clearly now. They had blonde braided hair with emerald green eyes to contrast their red hoodie.
“Yeah, just a bit lost,” Minami replied.
“You don’t work here?” The sinner raised an eyebrow.
“Oh no I work… somewhere else,” Minami responded to the question.
“Then how did you end up…here?” The sinner questioned.
“Well I was following one man here but I lost him,”
“So you don’t work here but you were… ok ok, do you have a home I can walk you to?”
“Oh- uhh home, right,” Minami recalled her teachings. “How do I get one of those here?”
“You don’t have a home do you?” The sinner questioned.
“Not yet…,”
“You aren’t from around here are you?” The other snickered.
“Yeah, everything seems so new to me,” Minami confessed.
“In that case… Come with me,” The hooded figure turned and gestured to Minami to follow.
“How do I know I can trust you?” Minami hesitated.
“Heh smart girl,” The sinner said. “I’m Nikki Hanada and you are?”
“Minami Hokutozai,”
“Well, Hokutozai, trust me, anything beats saying out here,” Nikki shrugged. “Besides I got a place with some others you can stay until you get on your feet,”
“I-,” Minami looked at the other. She was a sinner but she didn’t sound like she was lying. “Sure,”
“Sweet, and oh yeah,” Nikki fished in her pocket. “Dinners on the old man,” She pulled out a wallet.
“You stole that from him?!”
“Shhh, keep it down,” Nikki shrugged. “The cards are no good, I just need whatever cash he had on him,”
She is a sinner. Minami reminded herself, but she had a sort of charm about her.
.
.
.
“Hey guys I’m back,” Nikki called into the house.
“Ahh welcome back,” a voice greeted her back from around the corner.
“Nikki’s here,” younger voices joined.
A bunch of kids ranging from 5 to 11 rushed to meet Nikki with an embrace.
“Ahh hey hey guys,” Nikki settled down the kids. “Oh Kiri, I picked up another one,”
“Sigh, Without asking may I add,” A woman came out from around the corner. She had tight curly black up in braids and foggy blue eyes that matched her hoodie and blue jeans. She sighed. “Sorry, I just hope you got enough for dinner tonight,”
“I do,” Nikki smiled. “Pizza night!”
“Woohoo!!” The kids cheered.
“Oh yeah Kiri, where is Luna?” Nikki asked.
“Hmm? Suika got a cold. She’s watching after her,” Kirisame explained.
“Alright, I’ll bring her up some food later,” Nikki walked inside the house so Minami followed.
“Nikki,” Kirisame gestured her head to the side.
“Oh right, guys this is Minami. She’s going to be staying with us for a while,” Nikki explained.
“Please excuse me,” Minami bowed her head.
“Just pull your weight and you're fine,” Kirisame half joked. “So Nikki, how much did you get?”
“Seems like there were a lot of drunk old fools out tonight,” Nikki held up the cash she stole. “I'd say 5,000 yen,” she smiled like she was proud.
Minami was confused but she came down here to learn about humans.
“That should hold us over until tomorrow,” Kirisame hummed in satisfaction.
“What’s tomorrow?” Minami asked.
“Me and Kiri here have a fight,” Nikki pointed to herself and Kirisame.
“You guys are going to fight?!” Minami gasped.
Nikki gave her a strange look. “I meant in a ring,”
“But rings go on your finger..?”
“Where did you find her?” Kirisame laughed a bit.
“You’re not from here huh? I mean a boxing match,” Nikki explained more. “It’s like you hit someone until one person is down, and you get paid for it. You can come if you want,”
Minami had a lot more questions but chose to nod and go along with it.
“Now, who wants to order pizza?”
“Me!”
.
.
.
Minami slipped back into the alleyway she started in and turned back into an angel. She missed the feeling of her wings out. Minami pushed herself off the ground and flew back up to the clouds. The afternoon sun felt so good as she flew back up. Her feet touched the clouds and took a deep breath of the fresh air.
“Minami! There you are!” Ruri’s voice shouted.
“Minami?!” Minami turned and saw Kohaku and Ruri.
“Oh hey guys! You wouldn’t believe what I saw,” Minami tried to explain.
“You were given so long, I thought someone had seen you,” Ruri rushed to hug her. “They didn’t hurt you did they? Oh if they did I swear-“
“No no Ruri I’m fine,” Minami reassured her. “I met this human woman and are friends and they were so kind to me. Gave me a place to sleep and offered me food,”
“A human..?” Kohaku raised a brow. “Who?”
“Oh just this sinner Nikki Ha-,”
“Sinner?! You were hanging out with sinners?!” Kohaku cut Minami off.
“Well yeah… but she was so kind,” Minami defended.
“Who was this sinner?” Ruri questioned.
“Nikki Hanada,”
“Hmhhh,” Ruri raised her hand up and in popped Nikki’s file. “Nikki Hanada. Age 19, Sex: Female. A thief and boxer who stole Lee Takahashi’s wallet at 20:36,” Ruri read.
“Well yeah… but the old man had it coming, he pushed me and didn’t even bother to apologize,” Minami huffed.
Ruri held her hand again and Nikki’s file was replaced with Lee’s file. “Lee Takahashi. Age 56, Sex: male. A University professor who just lost his first grandson a few days ago,” Ruri read.
“Ohhh…,” Minami trailed off. “Well, where’s the part that Nikki steals for her orphans she watches over?”
“Mina… We aren’t here to pass judgment,” Ruri tried to kindly explain.
“The less we know about the humans the better,” Kohaku bluntly said.
.
.
.
Minami refused to accept that answer from the sisters.
