It was cold, far too cold for a day at the amusement park, but it was also far too easy to convince Kyungsoo to agree to the trip. Said agreement had as much to do with the fact that Baekhyun was incredibly persuasive as it did the fact that they hadn’t been to the amusement park in a while. Even with Kyungsoo’s half-hearted arguments, Baekhyun knew he’d say yes. His very special friend could never say no to him, after all.
Yes, “very special friend” was the label Baekhyun put on Kyungsoo. The reality of their relationship was a bit more complicated. Baekhyun was hyper aware of how it was just the two of them at the park. He was hyper aware that Kyungsoo was aware of how it was just the two of them at the park. The thing is, it could be considered normal for them. The amusement park was their place, after all. One odd summer, they’d made a plan to go to the amusement park with their friends and found that everyone had canceled at the last minute due to off-hand excuses that neither Baekhyun nor Kyungsoo followed up on. In the end, they decided to go together. So began Baekhyun’s three-year crush and the first of their many amusement park dates.
It was night at the amusement park. The day flew by. They visited every ride and even tried a few games—one of which Kyungsoo had to drag Baekhyun away from after he lost five times—and ate at their favorite ice cream shop despite the chilly weather. Overall, it had been a good time. Still, as always, there was a bittersweet feeling as the end of the night approached. He sat at the park bench with Kyungsoo and watched the merry-go-round circle in brilliant, white light. The horses wore silly expressions and there were a few strange animals in the loop. They sharply contrasted the regal form of the merry-go-round. Baekhyun couldn’t help but smile as he watched it. It reminded him of them. They were both adults, too old to be at an amusement park, but it was impossible not to let go of their worries here. It was nice to let them be.
A booming noise made Kyungsoo jump beside him. Instinctively, Kyungsoo grabbed for his arm, only pulling away with an embarrassed laugh when Baekhyun looked over. Kyungsoo nodded at the sky. “They’re doing fireworks.”
“They are,” Baekhyun said, leaning back to look up with him. A kaleidoscope of colors filled the darkened sky underneath the moon. “Want to stay and watch before we leave?”
“Yeah,” Kyungsoo said.
So they did. Somewhere in the middle of it all, though, Baekhyun found his gaze going somewhere else. Kyungsoo looked amazed by the show. His glasses reflected the lights, every color of the rainbow making him shine. This was an image Baekhyun wanted to capture. He wanted to bottle it and stow it away forever, just so he could see it whenever he wanted. He had half a mind to pull his phone out and take a picture, but Kyungsoo turned to him before he could.
Unknowingly, Baekhyun had taken his hand. Kyungsoo frowned in confusion, and the fireworks fell away until there was only the sound of the merry-go-round music ahead of them. “Baekhyun?”
Even without fireworks in his eyes, Kyungsoo seemed to sparkle. Baekhyun shook his head and smiled. Then he stood, releasing Kyungsoo’s hand. He leaned in and kissed his forehead gently, pulling away as if nothing happened. “Let’s go home?”
Kyungsoo blinked. If he didn’t know any better, Baekhyun would have thought he saw a dust of red on his cheeks. “Yeah,” Kyungsoo said after a moment. “Let’s.”
