Work Text:

It was the way their hands seemed to be made for each other. Their fingers perfectly interlocking, cold and warm meeting one another and creating a soothing sensation. Not to mention the shiver that ran down Eula’s spine whenever Amber spoke. Eula had always been a cold woman, but Amber made her soften like no one else could. It was everything about the other. She could explain anything to anyone and there was no way they could be mad at her. An accidental fire caused by her arrows? She was just trying to rid the fields of the cruel ice slimes That was glorifying it, but Amber always made sense.

She was never making excuses when she explained away her problems. No, she was simply explaining what happened. There was always a glisten in her dark eyes as she smiled sheepishly at whoever she had accidentally wronged. It wasn’t a constant, no. Amber was just charming in every way, every scenario, she left both parties with a smile on their face. Eula was no exception.

Oh how she wished she could have been. Turning a blind eye to someone who used one of those pesky wing gliders. It was such a pain to watch her beloved Amber leap from the rooftop and soar over valleys. What if she crashed? Although Amber was an expert, Eula worried.

She never said it though.

How could she? Eula had seen what happened when Amber realized how worried Eula became over some things. The brunette would just stop doing them. Eula didn’t want to take away the joy she knew her partner felt when she was in the sky. She would bite her tongue. For now, and forever. If Amber was happy, then Eula could learn to live with the reality of her partner in the sky above her.

Amber made her heart melt. Into a soupy mess that seemed to pool in her chest and seep throughout her whole body. A gradual warmth dancing across her cold skin. Organizing her feelings had never been something that Eula was familiar with. Amber made it easier, but it didn’t fix those issues entirely. Eula knew she wouldn’t ever be able to take control of her emotions in the way Amber could. Though Amber welcomed her with words of comfort, she didn’t fix everything. Just most things.

Processing emotions and other things of the like were something that she wouldn’t be able to do easily. Never. Eula worked on it though. Every day. For her beloved Amber, Eula would attempt anything. A soft knock was heard from the wooden door that entrapped Eula in her room. A grim way to view it to be sure.

“...Eula?”

The silence didn’t hang in the air for long. Eula leapt to her feet, swinging the heavy door open. “Amber, I wasn’t expecting you.” The brunette stared up at her partner, a smug smile on her face.

“That’s the point. I can’t surprise you if you know that a surprise is on its way.” Amber threw an arm around the taller woman. “Now, come on.” She had begun to lead the other woman away. Out of her bedroom and down the stairs. “I have something fun planned.”

Eula’s mind began to wander. Where could Amber be taking her? She wondered if it was something safe, or dangerous. She and Amber were both plenty capable of these things, but she simply wanted to know what it was they were doing. “What is it? That you have planned?”

Amber stopped in her tracks to turn her face towards the other before shaking her head. Eula wouldn’t get her to crack that easily! “Eula, I know you. You know me. I can’t tell you yet, but I promise that you will enjoy it.” Amber gave the other’s hand a gentle squeeze as they made it outside.

Mondstadt looked different in the dark.

Twinkling stars shone down on the brick streets. There were people sitting outside the tavern, lanterns illuminating their features. Eula was able to ignore the looks cast her way by instead focusing on the scenery that the town had to offer. This was a place that she was meant to be, she belonged in this town. Amber said that to her, so it had to be true. Everything that left Amber’s mouth was gospel to Eula. That was what she so dearly believed, that Amber was her savior in one way or another. Just because she didn’t eye Eula as a freak of nature.

“Eula?” Amber suddenly asked. “Are you alright? You’re being quiet.”

Eula looked at the other woman and nodded. “When have you known me to be a conversationalist Amber?”

Amber chuckled offhandedly. “I’m just worried, Eula,” she nudged the taller woman’s arm. “You know that I just want you to be alright.” The two of them had reached the gates and stepped outside. “You see the fire over there?”

Eula nodded. “It’s always there, Amber, of course I see it.”

Grinning, Amber grabbed the other’s hand tighter. “C’mon! We’re cooking with fire tonight!” Beginning to sprint, she dragged Eula along with her. The barrels contained ingredients for a plethora of dishes. Amber gestured for Eula to sit down. “What would you like first?” She bowed to the blue haired woman, looking up at her with a smile.

“Steak…” Eula decided. She wasn’t really sure, but she knew Amber liked it. Amber blinked, and then got to work. When she presented the dish to Eula, she was grinning.

“I hope you like it,” she said. Silence hung in the air between them as they ate. Much to both of their surprise, Eula was the one to break it.

“Amber, I adore you, more than anything in the world.”

Amber blinked, looking over at the other woman. “Eula?” She could feel her eyes watering. It was shocking, the way she almost started sobbing. “Eula I- I love you!” The other’s confession had spurred Amber’s own confession. She had hugged her, wrapping her arms around the taller woman. “You’re the sweetest, you know me better than anyone else.”

Eula was stunned. Her arms had looped around Amber in a firm embrace as she kissed the top of the brunette’s head. “Thank you, Amber.” There was some silence, and then she ran a hand through the other’s hair. “I love you,” it was such a soft response. So quiet, and calm. Eula was embarrassed, but another part of her felt at peace.

For once, she felt she belonged.
