Chapter 1: eye contact

Chapter Text

1:25 pm

He hated it. He despised seeing it. It made his blood boil and he had no clue why which only made it so much worse.

“Wow Izu” you turned the page of his notebook, skimming the page before turning it again “your drawings just keep getting better. The amount of details in the notes is a lil’ creepy though” you were sat across from Izuku, your friend since childhood. You’d defended him from the constant teasing and harassment he faced countless times as much as you could without getting into trouble yourself. He understood the limits to your protection but was grateful nonetheless. You two were a great pair, always able to keep the conversation going, reading each other without meaning to, feeding into the others' fixations, and now you two were in middle school and everybody knew about your guys’ inseparability.

“Hah, thanks. Did you see the new fight between…” he trailed off and you zoned out a little, feeling eyes in the back of your head. You looked around the class but couldn’t see anybody looking at you. Weird. This had been happening a lot lately, you’d feel someone stare and look up to see no one looking at you. Whatever.

“You okay there y/n?” you looked back at your friend and smiled

“Yeah sorry about that. What were you saying about a new fight?” Izuku sighed and just went back into his normal banter about the newest fight. You loved him but, my god, was he a talker. Not that you cared much since it was easier than having to carry the conversation like you did with plenty of your other friends and peers.

3:29 pm

You were about two thirds into being in a dead sleep before the bell rung, making you jump in your seat. After taking at least 2 minutes to overthink about who saw you asleep you got that feeling again. Someone was staring. You jerked your head around before locking eyes with him. Katsuki Bakugou who, unfortunately, you’d also known since childhood. He quickly looked away and slung his bag over his shoulder before walking out with his goons. Why was HE looking at YOU? Your best friends bully since we were all tots, hell, he was your bully at times too but not like he was with Izuku. You walked out the classroom brushing it off. Maybe it was a coincidence. I mean you were asleep in class just minutes before.

You walked home in a sleepy daze munching on some salted peanuts you’d just bought. You had decided to take the long way home so you could stop by a convenience store but what you hadn’t expected was to see Katsuki, picking up some soda. Of course, he didn’t say a word to you, just walked right past you, shoulder checking you on his way to the cashier. What was his deal? First you catch him staring and then he has the nerve to shoulder check you? You sighed before popping another peanut in your mouth. Whatever, it was too much effort to think about what was going on in his head other than himself and whatever else pre pubesent boys thought of.

4:23 pm

What was her deal? Always talking to that shitnerd like he was worth the attention. Katsuki had sat himself on his chair across from his desk fiddling with his pencil. He was supposed to be doing homework but even the great Bakugo Katsuki had trouble focusing sometimes.

“Fuck this, fuck her, and fuck deku.” He sighed trying to resettle into a mindset that actually allowed him to do his work. If anybody thought that he, of all people, would let a girl derail him from his school work they were wrong. Especially if they weren’t even here. . . which would be the case at literally any other time. Before he knew it he had broke his pencil and was out of his chair and yelling at whatever could hear him “FUCK SAKES.”

“BAKUGO KATSUKI.” he heard his mom yell from downstairs letting out a groan and sitting back down in his seat.

“YEAH YEAH.” he scowled, opening the drawer to his desk and fishing for another pencil before leaning over his homework and sighing. This was stupid.

Why’d it piss him off so much?

8:40 am - next day

It was only ten minutes into class and you could feel eyes on you again. It's way too early for this to be happening again. You looked around trying to be less discrete this time. You sit in the front row towards the windows so it wasn’t like it was hard. Your eyes literally saw red and you made eye contact with Katsuki. You’d just caught him staring for the second time in less than 24 hours. This was weird. You’d turned your head back to your work and your head began to flood with thoughts.

Did you manage to piss him off? Maybe it was because the last time you two had actually spoken was when you told him to ‘eat shit and trip’ because of course telling him to die was overboard. He could be mad about something else, though. Is there something in my hair?.. Nono I would’ve noticed or Izu woulda told me. Oh god. Izuku was officially rubbing off on you.

1:27 pm

You were in the middle of a debate about a new favorite hero of yours: Kamui Woods when Izuku stopped and leaned in closer.

“Hey, Y/n, I think Kacchan was staring at you a second ago” he leaned back trying his absolute best not to look in Katsukis direction again. You were sitting across from his desk and Katsuki was towards the front of the classroom with his goons who were laughing at something.

“You’re kidding.” you sighed and laid your cheek on the desk. What the hell, man.

“Uhm, no, I’m not. . . Are you okay?” Izuku just looked down at you. He was used to your dramatics by now.

“No, Izu, I’m not. My life is literally upside down right now and all I want is a nap”

“I don’t know if your life is ‘literally upside down’ but whatever's happening, you should tell me so I can help”

“It totally is upside down and it's all because I've caught that- that- violence ball staring at me. 3 times. 3. Times.”

He sighed and thought for a moment but of course Katsukis anger issues seemed to be the only solution right now. “Did you make him mad? Maybe it's because you yelled at him the other day” you groaned and closed your eyes. Usually he can think of solutions to problems you’d never think of. But, if that were the case Katsuki would’ve said something or rather, yelled it.

———————

Oh fuck. Katsuki pulled his head away and huffed. Deku had just caught him staring. Shit. Katsuki looked back over to glare at deku into not saying anything but by the time he did Izuku was already leaning closer towards you and this made Katsuki mad. He assured himself it was mainly because deku was talking about him staring but he also despised how close you two were. Always talking and gossiping about fucknot and heroes. Giggling like a hopeless couple. He despised how you defended him. Least that loser could do was learn how to stand up for himself from people instead of having you do it for him. It made him cringe.

“Tch.” whatever.

3:32 pm

You were never really scared of Katsuki, but as you two grew up he became much more aggressive and relentless with his teasing which made a mutual disliking between you two. He’d always teased you for your lack of control of your quirk but once you started to mature and gained more control he backed off slightly. Still occasionally shoving or making fun of you for your clothes or just existing in general. But right now, in this very moment, you were terrified. Somehow you had come up with the idea to just confront him.

You took a deep breath as you walked closer to him. He was putting his shoes away and luckily his goons were nowhere to be seen. “Hey Bakugou, can I speak with you?”
