Two weeks after the end of their little undercover stint, and Ryan and Esposito still hadn’t talked about it. At least the awkwardness had disappeared after that first night, but there was still some tension in the air when they were alone.
Ryan whistled as he walked through the streets of New York, on his way to get dinner from his favorite Indian place around the corner.
“Kevin?”
Ryan turned around to see Eve, one of the women from the cruise.
“Eve! It’s so nice to see you.” Ryan said enthusiastically and he hugged her shortly.
“How’s Javier’s mum?” Eve asked, concerned.
Ryan doubted for a moment, but he knew it wouldn’t be a problem to tell them the truth now.
“Well, there’s something I need to tell you?” He said carefully.
The woman shot him a confused look.
“Well, Javi and I weren’t there on our honeymoon, we’re not even a couple.”
“What do you mean?” Eve asked, the confusion even more clear on her face now.
“We are both NYPD detectives. We were undercover to try to solve a murder that was comitted right before our trip.” Kevin admitted.
“So when you got that phone call…?” Eve asked.
“That was our boss to tell us they had found the murderer.”
The realization suddenly dawned on her.
“Is this about Kira?” Eve asked.
“Yeah, I’m so sorry. Her boyfriend killed her when she wanted to break up with him. She’d finally found the strength.” Ryan told her.
Eve was silent for a moment.
“Wait a second.” She suddenly exclaimed. “You and Javi are not a couple?”
Ryan laughed awkwardly and scratched his neck.
“No, no, we’re not.”
“No, Kevin, you have to be kidding me. The chemistry between you was astronomical !”
“Well, I have to admit that I may have feelings for him.” Kevin admitted silently. It hit him like a brick. It was the first time he admitted that out loud.
“Go talk to him.” Eve smiled. “Oh, and give me a call. We can go on a double date when you’ve figured this all out.” She gave him her business card.
Ryan smiled at her thankfully.
“ If this all works out.”
***
Ryan abandoned the idea of dinner and walked the two blocks to his best friend’s apartment. He was breathing hard when Esposito opened the door.
“Hi?” Esposito asked, confused.
“Can I come in?”
“Yeah, of course.”
Ryan closed the door behind him. He felt suddenly overwhelmed by anxiety.
“What’s wrong? Are you okay?”
Ryan took a deep breath.
“I’m not okay, Javi.” Ryan started. He realized Esposito wanted to chime in, but he “Just… let me speak, please?”
Esposito nodded.
“Ever since we’re back from that cruise, I can’t help but feel there’s tension between us. And I need to know: did we cross a boundary there that made you feel uncomfortable? I mean, you initiated both kisses, so I thought you were okay with that. But I don’t know anymore and I...” Ryan suddenly stopped and looked at his hands.
“You?” Esposito stood in front of him in only a couple of steps.
Ryan looked up again.
“I miss you.”
They stood in front of each other, looking in each other’s eyes for a couple of seconds. It felt like hours.
“Can I kiss you?” Esposito whispered.
Ryan didn’t answer, instead he took Esposito’s head in between his hands and pushed his lips on his best friend’s. The kiss was clumsy and wet and not the best Ryan ever had, but the relief he felt was indescribable. Even more when Esposito wrapped his arms around his waist and pulled him flush against him.
Ryan broke the kiss, in desperate need of oxygen, but he kept Esposito close.
“I don’t ever want to go to a time where we’re not kissing anymore.” Esposito admitted, breathing heavily.
“Can we have a better kiss now though?” Ryan grinned and Esposito laughed. Esposito walked Ryan back until he was against the wall. Ryan’s heart skipped a beat.
“Yeah, and I think we can have much more tonight.” Esposito smirked, pushing his groin against Ryan’s and Ryan gasped.
“I think I can live with that.” Ryan breathed. “Now shut up and kiss me.”

“So Eve told me you’ve got us good there on the cruise.” Kristin said as she and her wife sat down at the table, in front of the two guys.
“We had a murder to solve.” Esposito said apologetically.
“But I’m glad you’ve actually found each other.”
“Also kind of thanks to Eve, to be honest.” Ryan admitted.
“I told you your chemistry was amazing.” Eve grinned.
Ryan looked next to him and smiled.
“Yeah, the chemistry is amazing.” He said and he pecked Esposito's cheek.
