Nux tried to swallow, sand gritty on his tongue, and instead tried to spit. Both actions were futile. Maybe he could open his eyes? Light stabbed right into his skull and he winced. Well, at least he knew he could indeed open his eyes.
With his second attempt, he managed to make out his cracked windshield. Great. There went his aqua cola rations for the next moon, paying to fix it. He squirmed a little, trying to figure out what— fuck! Nux rolled over as best he could off the glass and ended up taking a stick shift to the back. Nothing made sense until his eyes fixed on Immortan’s brand. It was beneath him.
Ah. Okay, that made sense. The car had flipped.
Why had it flipped?
Nux wracked his gears but came up empty. War? Had they been doing war? He thought maybe there had been Buzzards. Sand, though. Lots of sand. A storm. Maybe that is what had flipped him. He never would have flipped his drive on his own. He was too good for that.
Reassured, Nux looked around, trying to figure out how to get out of his car. One door was busted in, the other was flush up against sand, and the lancer’s roof was buried.
Oh shit. His lancer. His brand-new fucking lancer.
Nux groaned, wondering what shit he’d have to put up with if his lancer was dead and he had to go and find another one. Or worse, if his lancer was witness to him flipping his car.
Muttering apologies to his ride, Nux pushed at the windshield, slicing his hands on the shards, slicking it all with blood as he pulled himself out through it. Glass raked his belly and sand ground into his wounded palms and all he could think was, “Slit’s going to fucking shred me.”
If he was alive.
By the time Nux was birthed from his wreck, he wasn’t sure what to hope for. A bit of digging under the lancer’s post yielded nothing, so he widened his search, walking spirals in the sand, poking at every likely bump in the sand.
Eventually, he found Slit.
“Hey, mate.” The body didn’t respond to Nux’s boot-nudge. “Hey.” Nothing. Nux sighed and started digging the body out, his hands caked with sand and blood now. “Are you even alive?”
The body groaned. “I’m alive… I can tell because of the pain.”
Nux rolled his eyes and kept digging. “You and me both.”
