Chapter Text
I had settled in for a quiet night at home, just me and my guitar when I heard the phone ring.
“Who the hell is calling this late at night?” I complained out loud. Then I heard Mimi’s soft, shaking voice. Technically I’d broken up with her weeks ago. I wasn’t supposed to still care but somehow I did.
“Roger, I’m sorry to bother you this late at night. It’s okay if you don’t want anything to do with me. I just relapsed and I feel so awful and I don’t know what to do.”
By that point I’d picked up the phone. “Mimi, just hang tight okay? I’m coming to get you.”
I put on my shoes and jacket and ran across the street as fast as I could. I found Mimi sitting on a chair, shaking. Her brown eyes filled with tears as she looked up at me. I didn’t say anything. I just put my jacket around her and hugged her.
“Let’s get you home” baby - I almost added before remembering we weren’t together anymore and she might not appreciate the pet name. I already regretted my decision to leave. I don’t know why I had to go and sabotage a good thing. Why the hell was I jealous of Benny? Would Mimi even want me back? Dozens more questions raced through my mind as I helped her to her feet and started to walk her home.
We continued to walk without saying a thing to each other until we reached the doorway of Mimi’s apartment. She was the one to break our silence.
“Would you mind staying? Just for tonight? I don’t want to be alone tonight. I promise that tomorrow morning we can go our separate ways and I’ll leave you alone.”
“Of course I’ll stay with you. I’ll stay as long as you want me to.”
“Do you want your jacket back?”
“No, you should keep it. It looks good on you.” I wondered if Mimi could tell that I was trying to flirt with her.
I had never spent the night with Mimi before and I was so nervous. I didn’t want to somehow fuck things up even more. Her bed was ungodly soft and her perfume clung to her sheets. Mimi fell asleep almost instantly. She must have been exhausted. I was an insomniac that purposely didn’t sleep. If I never slept then I couldn’t have nightmares. I watched her chest rise and fall and all I thought of was the way she sobbed when I left her. I was still traumatized from April’s death. I had no clue how to have a healthy relationship and honestly I was still too scared to figure it out. I started silently crying. I didn’t know if Mimi was awake or not but she rested her head on my chest and traced her hand down my arm and took my hand in hers. I stroked her hair with my free hand. The two of us fell asleep like this.
