Work Text:
Sean and the lads had met up at the closest train station, then rented a car and drove out to the middle of nowhere for a weekend in the woods. He opened the door to the grand cabin, and yeah, grand was the right word here.
They were greeted by three huge, luxurious couches in front of a beautiful fireplace with a flat screen TV perched above the mantle.
Attached to it was the kitchen, fairly large with a generous amount of counter space and an island big enough for them all.
As the rest of the lads looked around to admire the beautiful cabin, Dan looked for a bedroom to claim and put his stuff in.
Closet. Bathroom. Ah! Here’s a bedroom.
Dan was greeted by the most massive bed he’d seen in his life. It had to be at least 9 feet in both directions. I’d feel terrible keeping such a gigantic bed to myself. Daithi should have it, he’s the tallest.
Dan walked out in search of another bedroom, only to open the door to a room he’d already seen. He scanned the hallway as realization dawned on him. He’d already opened the door to each room. This bedroom was the only one in the cabin.
He went back into the living room to inform the other lads of his discovery.
“Uh, guys. Bit of an issue here.” Dan nervously started.
“Ah, our vacation’s just gettin’ started, Dan! I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about.” Brian responded, clapping him on the shoulder.
“Uh, I think it might be. For some of us. Just come see.”
Dan led the other lads to the room, each of their eyes widening in shock at the size of the bed.
“Well damn.” Kevin said. “Big feckin’ bed.”
“I’m the tallest, I call dibs!” Daithi shouted, diving face-first into it.
“So what’s the problem then?” Sean asked, curiously.
“This is the only bed in the house.”
All the lads paused and stared at Dan in silence.
“What?? That can’t be right.” Sean said, pulling out his phone. “The website said this cabin sleeps 5.”
“I think that’s still an accurate statement. I mean, look at the size of this thing.” Kevin laughed.
“Those couches in the living room are big, three of us could sleep on those.” Brian suggested. “One of us will have to share with Daithi, but with a bed this big I don’t think it should be… weird, right?”
“Yeah. I wouldn’t worry about it. We’ll figure it out.” Sean assured the group.
Hours passed. The lads filmed almost the entire time. A dip in the creek that turned into a splash fight, Daithi finding a ginormous stick and declaring himself king of the woods, and Kevin trying to start a “camp”fire, under heavy supervision from Dan.
As the night wore on, it got too cold to stay outside, so the lads headed back inside for some video games to wind down before going to bed. They decided against Mario Kart this time; it was too early in the vacation for them to hate each other just yet.
The session lasted a couple of hours, until Daithi pointed out that Sean had fallen asleep on one of the couches. Dan got up to turn off the system, and he and Kevin went to go claim the other two couches while Daithi and Brian headed to the bedroom. The arrangement had been decided an hour or two ago, the lads agreeing that Brian should sleep in the bed, since he was the one who knew Daithi the best.
Dan found some spare blankets in the closet and handed one off to Kevin. The two walked back into the living room, Dan taking a moment to throw one of the blankets on top of Sean, who didn’t even stir at the contact.
“Well, he’s out cold.” Kevin whispered, settling into his chosen couch as Dan turned off the lights.
“Honestly, I’m right behind him.” Dan laughed softly.
“So am I.” Kevin yawned. “Night, Dan.”
“Night, Kevin.”
Meanwhile, Brian and Daithi had settled into the bed. Each claimed a side, and there was still a good three feet of space between them; very little chance of them waking up awkwardly tangled together. And man, was the bed comfy. Daithi sank down into it and was softly snoring within minutes. Brian followed close behind, knowing this was gonna be the best sleep he’d had in a while.
The same could not be said for the lads in the living room.
Sean woke up an hour later with an immense pain in his neck. He chalked it up to the fact that he’d fallen asleep without a pillow and grabbed the one Dan had left for him on the end of the couch.
Try as he did, going back to sleep was no easy task. It was as if these couches were made of rocks or something. He tossed and turned, trying to get himself in a comfortable position to no avail. He sighed and pulled out his phone, when he heard a small “ow” coming from the couch across from his.
Kevin turned over, now facing Sean. Seeing the light from the phone, he whispered, “you’re up too, huh?”
Sean nodded. “These things are way less comfy than they look.”
“I know!” Kevin exclaimed, a bit too loudly. Sean put his finger to his lips before pointing at Dan, still sleeping, and Kevin gave a sheepish look before quietly continuing, “I’m honestly thinking fuck it at this point, I’m sure that bed can fit all of us.”
“Even the floor would be more comfortable than this.” Sean joked.
“I am not sleeping on a fecking hardwood floor, Sean.” Kevin said adamantly, getting up from the couch. “You in?”
“I am.” Came Dan’s voice, muffled from the blanket.
“Ah shit, did we wake you?” Sean asked.
“I never went to sleep at all, actually.” Dan admitted. “I’m so fuckin’ tired.”
“Alright, fine, let’s go.” Sean said as he got up from the couch. The three of them went down the hall into the master bedroom. The door squeaked open, earning a sleepy whine from one of the bed’s occupants; no one could tell which.
Brian’s head peeked out from under the covers, a slightly irritated look on his face.
“Sorry, Brian.” Sean started. “But those couches are like sleeping on feckin’ concrete and this bed is more than big enough for all of us.”
Brian sighed. Honestly… he saw this coming a mile away. It wasn’t a matter of if the other three were going to join, it was a matter of when, and honestly he didn’t think they would last as long as they did. He scooted over until he was inches from Daithi, as Sean got in next to him, followed by Dan, and finally Kevin.
Daithi rolled over, opening his eyes in confusion when he felt Brian next to him.
“Couches were uncomfortable, they’re joining us, go back to sleep.” Brian explained.
“Okay.” Daithi said, too sleepy to bother deciphering the situation.
With Sean, Dan, and Kevin now far more comfortable, sleep came easily to all three of them, and the lads slept through the rest of the night with no trouble.
The next morning, Daithi was the first to wake up. It took him a moment to register the warm mass on his shoulder, and he wondered how Brian had managed to get all the way over to his side of the bed. He looked beyond Brian and noticed that it wasn’t just him and Brian anymore; everyone was in the bed. Kevin and Dan were practically cuddling, Dan’s arm slung across Kevin’s torso. Sean had his legs awkwardly tangled with Brian’s, and Brian was sleeping on Daithi’s shoulder. He then vaguely remembered being woken up briefly in the middle of the night. Brian had said something, but he didn’t really listen and just went back to sleep.
This was probably what he was talking about. He knew he couldn’t get up without waking Brian, and in turn, likely waking everyone else. His phone was too far away on the nightstand, so he resigned himself to just laying there, enjoying the softness of the bed, the morning sunlight streaming through the windows, and the sound of birds chirping mixed with the quiet snores and even breathing of his friends. It was nice. Peaceful. Despite the weirdness of the situation he was in, he found himself rather enjoying it. In fact, it was so calm and peaceful that he had fallen asleep again within minutes.
The next one to wake was Kevin. Noticing Dan’s arm hugging his stomach, he knew getting up was a lost cause and decided to snuggle in closer. It’s not like they’re in a rush to go anywhere or do anything, so he could afford to lie down a bit longer. Kevin found himself drifting off once again.
Sean was the next one. Acutely aware of his position in the middle of the bed, he knew he wasn’t getting out of there without climbing over everyone and definitely waking them all. He tried to at least untangle his legs from Brian’s, but stopped when he felt Brian stir for a second before going still. Sean decided not to risk it again, letting the warmth of the bed lull him back to sleep.
Brian woke next, wondering why his pillow felt harder than it did before, taking a second to realize that his “pillow” was Daithi’s shoulder. Brian did have a tendency to shift and move in his sleep, so he wasn’t surprised to have ended up this way. He felt an odd weight on his legs, and looked down to realize they were tangled with Sean’s. Well, he’d have to wait until they were both awake to untie that knot. But what was the rush? They still had the entire day ahead of them. Brian let sleep overtake him once more.
Finally, Dan awoke, blushing hard when he noticed how close he was to Kevin. Dan had a tendency to get cold easily, but the bed’s thick blanket with Kevin’s body heat had taken care of that issue nicely. Trying to free himself from Kevin’s grip wasn’t going to happen, so he just sighed and let himself enjoy the peace. He didn’t even notice his eyes closing again.
At breakfast, it was surprisingly easy to talk about.
“I didn’t think it was weird, did you?” Dan asked.
“I thought it would be, but nah.” Brian responded.
“I kind of liked it.” Kevin admitted.
“Yeah, felt like a giant sleepover.” Daithi added.
“So we all just gonna sleep in the bed then?” Sean asked.
“Yep.”
And that night, the lads did just that.
