Heartbeat Lullaby

Summary:

Where Byakuya had trouble sleeping and Makoto helps him with that.

Work Text:

Byakuya finish off working, he stands up and start his late night routine. He locks the door, puts on his blue silk pijama and proceeds to wash his face and teeth. After plugging two of the desk lamps, he turns off the ceiling light. He then sits down on the bed and opens his sheets just to lay down and grab a book from his night stand. No, he wasn't planning to sleep, he usually never does, not until he's so tired that his body just knocks off. Not until he takes at least three of his sleeping pills. Not until he starts playing the stupid lullaby on his cellphone. But he usually never sleeps.

It all started two months ago, when he was working a very late night in his office. Somehow, he didn't realize that someone was following him all the way to his mansion, and somehow the security peasants didn't stop them from entering to his very own room. He doesn't like talking about it, and only a few people knew that it happened. But that doesn't mean that, since then, he's not nervous when he comes out of his office, or when he is changing his clothes. He's nervous all the time, if you pay closer attention, you can see how his right leg is always trembling, and that he still have some tiny and faint black marks on his wrists and his neck; but the thing that is the most obvious is that he can't sleep, not with the lights off, not in complete silence, not alone.

Ever since, Byakuya asks Makoto to sleep in his room. Not besides him, not even in the same bed, but Makoto sleeps on a leather black couch close to the window and Byakuya in his big white bed. Makoto always pays close attention to Byakuya's night routine, he's kind of worried, but there's nothing he can do about it, not when Byakuya doesn't want to talk about what happened.

One of those nights, when Makoto was already deep asleep, and Byakuya was trying to, a big and loud storm began to torment Byakuya's dreams. He was there all over again. He was standing just under the door frame when someone pushed him to the ground, all over again. He was in the floor trying to scream, all over again. He was bleeding and crying, all over again.

-"Byakuya? Are you okay?" -Makoto gently asks while trying to wake Byakuya.

He couldn't breathe, even though he was trying so hard to breathe. The air just couldn't pass through his throat to his lungs. Makoto was there, he was holding him, holding him tight, but yet so gentle, he was asking him to breathe, to calm down; and after some minutes he did. Makoto said that he was going to hold him until the storm passed by, and he did. The thunders sounded far away, and you couldn't see the lightning anymore. Byakuya had already calmed his breathing, but he hadn't said a word.

-"Hey, Byakuya. Maybe you should play the lullaby now, its late and you have to work in a couple of hours" -Makoto said, but he didn't receive an answer.

-"Byakuya?" -Makoto checked on him, he was laying his head on top of Makoto's chest, and for the first time in weeks Makoto saw him sleeping soundly and peacefully. Makoto smiled and wrapped his arms around him.

-"Maybe you don't need it anymore" -Makoto said in a faint whisper, just before falling asleep himself too.
