Chapter Text
YAZ and the DOCTOR sit on a grassy bank at the edge of the beach. The sunset glows behind their silhouettes as they face each other, the Doctor with her legs crossed and Yaz kneeling down.
They both appear to be sad, but we can see that the Doctor has years of memories in her expression. She's done this so many times, she doesn't want to do it again.
Yaz's hands are in the Doctor's.
YAZ
I don't want to lose you, Doctor.
DOCTOR
You won't be, Yaz. I'll be right here. I just won't... look like myself.
(To herself) Or act like myself...
A tear forms in Yaz's eye, it's clear she heard what the Doctor mumbled. We see multiple emotions flash across her face but it's difficult to tell whether it's sadness, disappointment or confusion.
Yaz looks down, avoiding the Doctor's gaze.
YAZ
But you're like, the best person I've ever met. I can't,
Her voice hitches, she composes herself a little.
YAZ (Cont'd)
I can't imagine not being around you. Not being with you all the time. I need you, Doctor, you're the one person that keeps me going. I think I-
Yaz stops herself talking, unable to get out the words she's been wanting to say for years.
DOCTOR
Yaz? Please look at me, Yaz.
The Doctor squeezes Yaz's hand, prompting her to look up. We see Yaz's single tear has turned into more, but she tries to hold them back.
DOCTOR (Cont'd)
I know how you feel, I get it. I know exactly how you're feeling-
Yaz cuts her off, frustrated that the Doctor could think she knows how she feels. Clearly she doesn't, or she would have told Yaz by now. Right?
YAZ
-No you don't!
Their grips on each others' hands falter a little, Yaz's voice bouncing around the cliffs surrounding them.
Yaz calms herself, closing her eyes for a few seconds before looking towards the Doctor.
YAZ (Cont'd)
You don't know how it feels. You can't, Doctor. You're going to go away and the person I lov-
She comes close to saying it.
YAZ (Cont'd)
-And the person I know you as will be gone, forever. How am I supposed to live with that?
The Doctor is still, a soft expression moves across her face as she begins to understand. The Doctor goes to speak but Yaz cuts in again, dropping her hand.
YAZ
The one person I care most about most in the world- the universe- is disappearing from my life? I already lost you for 4 years, I searched so hard to find you.
How am I meant to be okay with somebody else replacing you? Some random person cannot be the same. They won't have your soul, your personality, your love, your eyes-
As Yaz speaks, the Doctor's hands begin to release small flecks of yellow/orange light. It's beginning. And sooner than the Doctor thought, she was supposed to have more time.
DOCTOR
Yaz, stop.
We can tell she doesn't want to do this but her voice is firm, commanding.
YAZ (offended)
What? Doctor don't tell me to stop I'm trying to-
DOCTOR
-Yaz we don't have time.
YAZ
I love you okay! I love you and I cannot leave that behind. I can't carry it over to another random face.
Silence fills the air as Yaz's words sink in. The Doctor'sknown, Yaz has known, but neither had acknowledged it before.
Yaz looks towards the Doctor, an expression mixing regret and satisfaction on her face. She finally said it. Yaz studies the doctor's almost unmoving face, but there's a softness in her eyes.
The Doctor remains still for a few moments, allowing the wind around them to blow her hair across her face.
DOCTOR
Yaz, I know.
YAZ
What?
DOCTOR
I know. We've loved each other since day one. Since I met you, you've been my life. The reason I do what I do, my person to protect. But I need to go now.
The Doctor is cut off by Yaz's lips on hers. The Doctor tenses, but relaxes as a tear slips out of both their eyes. They stay together, Yaz's hands lay on the doctor's waist, slightly stood up on her knees to reach the Doctor. The wind blows their hair but they are unmoved, solid in their love for each other.
The light emanating from the Doctor begins to glow brighter, we see a brief pain flash across her face and Yaz pulls back.
YAZ
Doctor?
Doctor
I'm- I'm fine, Yaz.
They smile at each other: Yaz peaceful with a weight lifted off her shoulders, while the Doctor seems to become heavier and heavier.
DOCTOR (Cont'd)
But it's almost time, darling.
The Doctor takes Yaz's hands again.
The sun is almost set behind them, a calm blue darkness spreading over their surroundings. The doctor's glowing skin provides most of the light, flowing over yaz's face and lighting up the grass and sand around them.
YAZ
No, (a moment of realisation) No!
Yaz's dried tears flow back again, she forgot just for a moment but reality is crashing back down.
The Doctor smiles a sad, contented smile towards Yaz, and leans forward. Yaz meets the Doctor and they sit with foreheads touching. Holding hands and eyes closed, they seem to be in peace for the first time as the Doctor's skin becomes brighter and brighter.
YAZ
Doctor?
The Doctor gives a light hum.
YAZ (Cont'd)
I love you.
The Doctor opens her eyes to see Yaz's softened, tear-stained face, her eyes reflecting the orange light. She takes the side of Yaz's face in her glowing hand and smiles with all the love in the universe.
DOCTOR
Yasmin Khan, I-
She bursts, the bright orange energy surging from every part of her body, throwing her arms and head outward.
Yaz is blown back. Helpless and dazzled by the blinding light, she covers her eyes with her arm.
YAZ
Goodbye, my doctor. Thank you.
