Lovely

Summary:

“You look…you look very nice. Beautiful, I mean. Damn, why can’t I speak?”

Work Text:

Giggles smiles softly at her reflection in her bedroom mirror as she rubs concealer into her cheeks and over her imaginary blemishes, all dolled up in a fancy dress that is almost as pink as her hair. Splendid stands patiently behind her and watches over Giggles' shoulder as she covers up her pores, careful not to make a mess of her hair after she had just spent an hour curling the ends of it.

Giggles is doing entirely too much for just a date out with Cuddles, the boy who had been her best friend for the longest time before he realized that he had been in love with her this whole time, but Splendid can't argue with her about how appropriate or inapproriate her dress and makeup would be for the dress code that the occassion calls for because he's never one to speak over a girl's choices.

Splendid is all for girls' rights to wear anything they like and not get anything for it from boys, but still. Still. He can't help but feel at least a little envious that Cuddles would be the one seeing Giggles in that dress. And it's not like Giggles isn't normally pretty, but he still feels at least a little envious that he would be the one lucky to see Giggles at her most beautiful. So lovely, dolled up and elegant.

Splendid can't help but feel at least a little envious that Giggles would be going out on a date with Cuddles in that dress while he stays at home and crashes on his couch, lounges around in his sweatpants, and scrolls through Treeter until he's called out for a mission.

Splendid can't help but feel hurt. He isn't the overprotective type (though he has had to hurt quite a few people for staring at Giggles for a little too long and preying on her cute, naive demeanor), but he's understandably a little jealous. Cuddles had been Giggles' best friend for the longest time before Splendid came into the picture and he grew jealous of their friendship. The two of them had liked Giggles at the same time, but Splendid had given in because he knew Cuddles was there first. He was the one who knew everything about her. But Splendid was the one who was always there by her side. He was the one who knew everything about her these days.

But now, Splendid guesses, Cuddles had been making it up to Giggles these past few weeks, and maybe it was why she agreed to go on a date with him even though she had told Splendid that she could never go on a date with someone she considers as a best friend.

"Well?" Giggles says, doing a little curtsy in front of Splendid, the hem of her skirt fanning against her ankles. She twirls around then, and Splendid's heart thumps in his chest like the beginning of a drumline. "What do we think about the dress? Do you think I should change?" She looks down at her knees to see if the skirt of the dress is too short. It is, but still tastefully. "Or is this formal enough?"

Splendid is speechless. His mouth is dry, and he can hardly think straight. All he can focus on is how good his best friend looks in that dress. She looks beautiful. The little bow on the front matches the color of her eyes. The lace trim matches the color of her hair. But everything else is pure, perfect white. Giggles looks perfect in prim, lovely white. Moonlight white. Almost like a wedding dress.

Splendid stumbles over his words, because he is just so easily flustered around Giggles that he loses any sense he might have had before. “You look…" He sighs, and Giggles looks up at him, her eyebrows raised a titch higher up her forehead. "You look very nice." He sucks in a sharp breath through his teeth. "Beautiful, I mean." He claps his hand over his mouth, then slaps his forehead. "Damn," he curses, "why can't I speak? Why can't I speak properly? I meant, you look beautiful today. But not that you're not usually pretty..."

"Thank you," Giggles says, her eyes shining. She takes hold of Splendid's hands and presses their palms together, their fingers spread flat. "That means a lot to me. I know you're not the best at compliments..." She smiles up at Splendid, suddenly shy, looking at him from under the curtain of her pink bangs, and Splendid scratches the back of his neck sheepishly. "You really are my best friend."

"Yeah..." Splendid says, throat tight, smiling back at Giggles as he watches her turn her back on him and head on to her date with Cuddles. "That's right. I really am your best friend."
