Work Text:

The world of Unikingdom was sunny as it always was. The air smelled like cotton candy, and the land itself was as beautiful as rainbows. The main castle of the kingdom was in the shape of the kingdom’s princess, Unikitty. The sky had a rainbow hanging right over it.

From out between the castle’s front legs was a door that Unikitty herself opened and shut behind her. She took in the experience of a brand new day with a deep breath and delightful melodies to hum.

The first townsperson she saw was her little brother, Puppycorn.

“Good morning, Puppycorn!” Unikitty greeted him loudly. “How’s my little bro this morning?”

“Doing great, sis,” Puppycorn replied, “Though weren’t you just here earlier?”

Unikitty raised an eyebrow. “Whaddya mean? You know I wake up at the same time every day!”

“Well,” he explained, “You told me that you were gonna go to Flowery Park for a few. But, you sounded like you didn’t know who I was at first.”

Unikitty gasped. “That can’t be right! It sounds like there is someone posing as me!”

Hawkodile was passing by. Unikitty grabbed him and asked, “Hawkodile! Did you see me earlier today?”

“Uh, no? I was busy picking flowers for... someone.” He held up a bouquet of orange begonias. “You think she’ll like ‘em?”

“I’m sure they will love them, Hawkodile,” Unikitty quickly answered, “But right now, I need to find who is posing as me!” With her power of flight, she blasted away from Hawkodile and Puppycorn. After a moment, Puppycorn grinned at Hawkodile innocently and gave as good of a thumbs-up as he could.

Unikitty made a quick stop at Flowery Park. She frantically searched high and low for any clues as to who was trying to masquerade as her. In her search, she looked under one of her friends unknowingly. “Oh, Fee Bee!” Unikitty put her bumblebee-flower hybrid friend down. “Sorry!”

“It’s okay, Unikitty. As long as you don't touch my flowers, it’s okay!” She grinned and waved. “What’s goin’ on?”

“There’s someone in Unikingdom who looks just like me,” Unikitty explained, “And I think they’ve been going around and talking to my friends as if they were me!”

Fee Bee pointed right past Unikitty. “Oh, you mean like them?”

Unikitty turned around and saw a colorful axolotl with a dinosaur-like body and tail. They had orbs floating around their neck with the colors of the rainbow. Unikitty dashed up to the creature, greeting them with a hearty “Hiiii!!!”

The axolotl jumped at first. “Hi! Who are you?”

“Who am I?” Unikitty introduced herself properly. “I am Princess Unikitty! Better question is who are you ?”

“I’m Lovemore,” the axolotl replied, “And I just got here. Everyone’s been mistaking me for you, I think!”

“It appears so!” Unikitty observed Lovemore closely. Then, she got an idea. “So, let’s settle this with a race, imposter!”

“Imposter? Wait, what?” Lovemore shook their head. “I don’t want to race. I’m not good at racing!”

“Too bad! Ready, set, go!”

Before Unikitty could get a headstart, Lovemore hastily tripped up Unikitty with one of their orbs. With no time to lose, they took off running. Unikitty picked herself up out of the dirt and angrily flew after her imposter.

The two flew through Flowery Park in several figure-eight loops. It was enough to make Fee Bee’s head spin multiple times over. Then, the two went through Town Square.

Dr. Fox stood in front of Hawkodile. The orange vixen scientist had just received the bouquet of begonias. “Dr. Fox,” Hawkodile stammered, “Truth is, I have a cru-”

Unikitty and Lovemore sped right past them at blinding speed, causing Dr. Fox’s bouquet of flowers to fly into the air. Hawkodile gasped as Dr. Fox’s change of expression from happy to saddened.

Meanwhile, Unikitty and Lovemore continued their race. “You’ll never win,” Unikitty quipped, “I’m the princess and what I say is law!”

“Oh yeah?” Lovemore bumped Unikitty’s side. “Well, to make us both happy, I’m going to win this!”

“Nuh-uh!”

“Uh-huh!”

The two racers bickered as the intensity of the competition went straight into Frowntown.

Master Frown watched as Unikitty and Lovemore went straight past him and his newfound friend, a bipedal Scottish Fold named Xavier. “My money’s on Lovemore,” Xavier said to Master Frown. “Are you betting on Unikitty?”

“Are you kidding?” Master Frown retorted, “I’m betting with you on this one!”

The race past Frowntown and its many buildings led Unikitty and Lovemore heading towards where they started in Flowery Park. Hawkodile, Dr. Fox, and Puppycorn had set up a finish line in the meantime.

Unikitty and Lovemore were neck-and-neck now. Lovemore exclaimed, “I’m gonna win!”

“No,” Unikitty yelled back, “I am!”

“Guys!” Dr. Fox, Hawkodile, and Puppycorn all called out to the racers.

In one fell swoop, both Unikitty and Lovemore tripped and rolled right through the finish line tape and slammed face-first together into the dirt.

The race had ended, and both Unikitty and Lovemore were lying down exhausted on the grass. Their faces had smears of dirt, and their eyes were bloodshot. They stood up slowly and faced each other with what was left of their pride.

Unikitty spoke first. “Ouch, my head… are you okay? I’m so sorry if I hurt you. This race got a bit too intense.”

“I’m okay,” Lovemore replied, “and I’m sorry too. I’m especially sorry for tripping you up at the start. That was a no-no.”

Puppycorn giggled. “That face you made was pretty funny, though, big sis.”

Unikitty pouted at first, but after a second, even she giggled at the thought. “Yeah, you’re right.”

Lovemore stuck out a paw. “How about we call it a draw. Friends?”

Unikitty accepted the paw shake. “Okay! Friends!”

All of Unikitty’s friends gave a round of applause, but that applause was cut short by the sudden sounds of rumbling.

The ground began to give way.

A crack in the Earth opened up, causing Lovemore to go into free-fall. Unikitty quickly grabbed onto Lovemore’s paws. Puppycorn, Hawkodile, and Dr. Fox latched onto Unikitty to make sure she didn’t fall in either.

“Hold on, Lovemore,” Unikitty cried, “We’ll save you!”

Lovemore looked down at the seemingly endless abyss below. They looked up at Unikitty and gave a small squeak. “I will be okay, Unikitty.”

“What do you mean?” Unikitty asked.

“I really don’t belong in this world. I belong in another world named Crystalga.” Lovemore began to loosen their grip. “I’ve got to go, Unikitty.”

“No!” Unikitty tightened her grip on Lovemore as much as she could. “We just became friends! You can’t leave! I won’t let you!”

“I’ll never forget you, Unikitty. Friends forever!”

Unikitty’s hold on Lovemore slipped. All Unikitty could do was cry and watch her axolotl friend fall into the endless abyss that was created right within Unikingdom.

Then, a bright light overtook the area.

Lovemore woke up on a rock. They yawned, rubbing their eyes.

They were in the Crystalga Plains. It was still daylight out.

“Was this all a dream,” they asked themselves, “or did I really just-”

“Lovemore!” A pink nimbat flew towards Lovemore and greeted them with a smile. “How are you doing?” Lovemore remained silent for a moment, still shaken. “You okay?”

“Oh!” Lovemore rubbed their eyes some more and grinned. “I’m okay, Flurry! I just dozed off again. Always happens after a long day.”

“Oh, okay.” Flurry shrugged. “Anyways, you wanna go to Buffer Beach? I’ll race you there!”

“With you, Flurry? Always! Ready, set, go!”
