Work Text:
Byakuya and Makoto had been dating for about three years. Makoto has gotten used to Byakuya's trouble communicating his feelings, and now he's good understanding him, and understanding what he wants and how he feels. He even says that next to Byakuya he feels at peace, and relaxed. Byakuya, on the contrary, feels nervous all the time; each time Makoto kisses him he feels suffocated with flutters in his stomach, each time Makoto holds him he feels like he's about to faint, each time Makoto tells him that he loves him, he feels like he's going to die. And he is so scared, he's scared of being so bond to him, he scared of Makoto leaving him and him just not knowing how to live alone again.
Its a cliché to say that Byakuya was used to being alone, but he was. Only for the past three years that he have had someone by his side, someone he could talk to, and someone where he had found some support. He was so good at being alone, he was convinced that the only person who needed was himself, and more people than that would be just annoying. But now, every time he sees Makoto smile he feels he's out of breath, and every time he hears Makoto's laugh he just knows that he is the one for him. Byakuya just knows that Makoto is the love of his life, but he's not sure whether he is the love of Makoto's life. And not knowing is terrifying.
For weeks now, Byakuya has been acting strange around Makoto. He makes the kissing longer, until both of them are out of breath, he makes the hugings tighter, until Makoto starts asking if something is wrong. Makoto noticed that something was up, but he knew that his boyfriend sometimes thinks too much between lines, so he just kiss him more, and hugs him more. But one day, when they were together, right after Makoto embraced Byakuya under the sheets, Byakuya started crying. Makoto's face turned completely white, as he had seen a ghost. He was so scared of having hurt Byakuya, so immediately he stopped and asked if he was okay, or if something was wrong. Byakuya just nodded and between whispers he denied being hurt, but he couldn't stop crying.
After some hours, hours where Makoto was holding Byakuya tight, Byakuya calmed down, but he didn't say a word. They both fell asleep without saying a word, and the next day Byakuya wasn't there anymore. He wrote Makoto a letter, not too long, not explaining too many things, just saying that he's leaving, and saying that now Makoto has the chance to finally meet the love of his life. Makoto was shocked, he didn't understand why he was saying that, neither why he was leaving, and nobody knew where he was, and the people who knew didn't say a word.
As the time went by, Byakuya felt like he was dead, he couldn't sleep alone anymore, he didn't want to eat, and he got himself buried in work so he didn't have time to think about Makoto, and what he was doing, and how he was doing and who he was doing. He didn't think about him, not until one day one of his servants gave him a package. A yellow folder, and in the inside there was a white and blue paper, decorated with white lace and with golden little ribbons. Byakuya took it out of the folder just to see that it was a wedding invitation: "Naegi Makoto and Kirigiri Kyoko". He felt once again that his heart was being torn, and his soul was breaking to pieces. But if Makoto wanted him there, the least he could do, after leaving him without warning was to attend his wedding.
So he was there, in a dark greenish suit, by the look of his face, it was possible to see that he was clearly uncomfortable, but he was there. He saw some of his friends, people who he didn't talk for a long time, and they were all looking at him. Obviously someone wouldn't expect to see the ex of the groom at the reception, but he was there because Makoto wanted him to be there. And he had already understood that even if Makoto doesn't want him, he always will.
Some staff member asked Byakuya to go to the groom preparation room; his heart was beating fast, more than fast, his hands were sweaty and he felt his throat very dry. He was scared, scared of seeing his stupid smile, scared of seeing his dorky eyes and scared of seeing the man he loved not in love with him anymore. So he bailed, as fast as he could, he ran all the way to his car.
-"After all this time together, do you think that I don't know you enough, baby?" -Makoto was standing right next to his car, with his stupid smile and his dorky eyes, wearing a dark blue suit and being as precious as ever.
Somehow, Byakuya forgot how to speak, and his face just turned red while he was saying gibberish. Makoto walked to be next to him, he had grown a bit, but Byakuya was still taller. Makoto made his way to put one of his hands in Byakuya's waist and the other one in his cheek.
-"You're marrying her".
-"I'm sorry I lied, I must've made you feel pretty bad, right?" -Makoto asked-, "But they couldn't tell me where you were, and Kyoko came up with this, and I just had to take the chance".
-"What are you saying?".
Makoto pointed to a sign next to the entrance: "Naegi Makoto & Togami Byakuya - Wedding Reception". Was that there all along? How he didn't notice? Byakuya's face was red again, he probably didn't saw it because he was busy being miserable. Byakuya turned to see Makoto again, and the next thing that Makoto knows is that Byakuya was kissing him. It was a very urged kiss, but the universe was glad to have their lips together again. They separated after both were out of breath.
-"You are so stupid, this was a stupid plan" -he said- "What if I didn't come?" -Byakuya asked, with a smirk in his face.
-"Plan B was faking my own death" -Makoto answered and then he laughed. His stupid laugh, his stupid smile, his stupid face. Everything in Makoto was stupid, and it was stupid of him to leave him. Byakuya started crying, maybe because he was so sad and scared of being in a wedding where Makoto was the groom but he wasn't the one marrying him, maybe because he was so scared of seeing a Makoto that didn't love him anymore, maybe because he was so happy of being around Makoto's arms again.
-"I'm sorry" -Makoto said, while he was hugging and gently caressing him-, "I am so sorry, sugar".
-"I am sorry, I thought you had the right to know"
-"I know, and I know now" -Makoto gently kissed him again, and again-, "I know now that you are the love of my life".
