Work Text:

It had been a month since James saw or heard anything from the man he loves, well one of them since the other was sitting here trying to hide his panic over Regulus’ disappearance. The only thing that Regulus left was a note saying he was going to be gone for a few days. Nothing else.

“What if he was captured by Moldy-mort?” James asked, turning to the leather clad figure on the couch. Sirius’ mercury eyes looked into the chocolate brown of James’.
“If he was, we would have heard something by now.” Sirius reasoned, exhaling smoke that twisted to curl through air, framing his face and blending with the onyx hair.
“It would be the same if he had been…” the crack in his voice, coupled with the tension in his shoulders betrayed the indifferent mask he is placing on. Neither of them wanted to voice that possibility. James’ face must have shown something on what he was feeling when Sirius stood up and grabbed his shoulders just so he could drag James back onto the sofa and they landed in a heap.

Usually, it was James doing this. Sirius’ ran his hand through the short black locks as he offered a cigarette which James gratefully took before lighting with the end of his wand. Some of the tension seeped out of his body thanks to the nicotine and the comfort warmth Sirius provided. They sat like that, in silence, just soaking up the comforting presence of each other.

A loud crash of the door from the kitchen resounded throughout the small bungalow shattering the temporary peace. Up on their feet, wands drawn in reaction time only those in a war could possess, they silently prowled towards the kitchen with Sirius taking the lead much to James' worry and annoyance. A side glance was the only warning given before Sirius, true to his house, slammed through the door and sent a stunner straight at the figure, who just managed to dodge and whip out his own wand to block the spell James shot at him. They all froze once their brain caught up with their eyes.

“Reggie?...” Sirius said, holding his breath and daring to hope. They all lowered their wands, slowly. Familiar blue eyes staring back at them both.
“We thought you had…died?” James’ stated as he slowly made his way up to Regulus, scared that he would vanish at the slightest touch. Regulus rolled his eyes.
“Do I look like the kind of person who dies?”
