Specifically You

Summary:

Chongyun had no idea why she only told him.

Why she'd always stalk and pick on him every chance she gets, why'd she go on this business venture, and why the hell she'd only make things hard for him specifically.

Things—however, took a turn for the worse and they're now trapped in Inazuma, forced to go on the run. And Chongyun doesn't know how much longer he can take it before he cracks.

"Hu Tao, that is an incredibly stupid idea."

"It's not stupid if you don't try."

"And even more so if you do."

"If it's so stupid, why don't you follow me then?"

Yeah right...no you're on your own in this Hu Tao.
Or so he thought.

Chapter Text

"Chongyun gē ge."

"Yes, Qiqi?"

"Qiqi sees something in the trees."

"Those are bamboos, Qiqi."

The cryo pair were walking down the stoned path leading out of the bamboo forest, south of Qingce Village. The two had just finished their rounds of herb gathering and are finally making their way back to Liyue Harbour after an exhausting day of walking.

Qiqi had just closed her journal and passed it to the older to put into his satchel when she noticed a black figure lurking amongst the leaves, "But Qiqi sees something, gē ge."

Chongyun looks up, streams of afternooon light beaming through the treetop, and yet not a single inclination to any sign of life lurking around other than the two and some other wildlife, "You're probably just tired, Qiqi. Here."

Chongyun bends down and outstretches his hand, Qiqi's lifeless lavender eyes could only look at his arms and at the boy in utter confusion, "Qiqi doesn't get it."

"I'll carry you back, Qiqi. You're tired."

The tiny zombie didn't really understand the gesture. While it seemed odd, it felt familiar and his arms looked inviting. So the girl walked over to him and wrapped her tiny arms around his neck. The boy then hooked his arm under her knees and scooped her off the ground, allowing her to rest on his shoulder, "Feel better?"

Qiqi nodded, feeling the fatigue hit her almost immediately. His warmth wasn't too much, and the cold aura he emitted allowed her to feel more at ease. Chongyun felt the lavender haired girl sigh and relax against his body.

At least she's more relaxed now.

The exorcist continued down the path, just about to pass the waypoint when he heard the rustle of leaves, and a soft giggle come from behind him. The boy immediately summoned his claymore and spun on his heel, sword now in a defence stance. A quick scan of the area resulted in nothing.

It could just be a boar.

Chongyun sheathed his sword and continued on his way when he heard the giggle again, now he was on high alert, "Who's there?!"

Still nothing. His only answer was the soft howls of wind that blew by and Qiqi stirring in his arms. Maybe the kids from the village decided to follow him again, "Ok guys, not funny. I told you guys you can't follow me."

Those kids from the village are going to drive Chongyun insane. Sure he was well received by them but every warning was never heeded, and any previous attempts to leave the village after his visits are always followed by whines, cries and a bunch of broken hearts.

"Luo? Dong Dong?"

No answer. Just more giggles.

Chongyun had no time for this. He turned his back one last time and heard the scutter of footsteps running up to him. The figure screamed, Chongyun screamed, and Qiqi—sort of…screamed?

"Hu Tao?!" The twin tailed brunette just about tripped over the moment the exorcist turned around to face his incoming attacker, causing the two to scream and Hu Tao to trip over her own two feet.

Hu Tao's floral red eyes looking up at the boy, he was unsure whether her expression was that of mischievous or embarrassed, both realising the awkward position they've put themselves in. Chongyun had somehow managed to catch Hu Tao before she hit the ground with his other free arm, and still keeping a tight grip around her as if she was weightless, "Chonggie!"

"Qiqi votes we throw her into the water."

Chongyun groaned, allowing Hu Tao to find her footing, "Oh come on, Qiqi! I just came to say hi!"

"Did you follow us all the way to Qingce Village?" Chongyun watched the girl fix the hat on her head, "Or did you just come here to harass the elderly again."

"What do you mean again, Chongyun?! I'm so hurt that you'd think so lowly of me?"

“I don’t know, I have received a couple complaints from them about how a certain funeral director had been running around amuck about coffins.”

“Oh a tragedy, I am so disheartened!” Hu Tao clutched her chest, “How dare they speak of me that way behind my back!”

“Behind your back?” Chongyun raised an inquisitive brow.

“I don’t know, Chong Chong! The last time I was here, they seemed pretty happy to see someone willing to discuss their funerals!”

“Huh…must have been my imagination then when I heard Chang the Ninth rambling about some annoying funeral director.”

“Aiya, that guy can never just lighten up now can he?”

“Qiqi still wants to throw her in the water.”

Chongyun let out a laugh and wrapped both his arms around her to keep her steady, “Ok Qiqi, that’s enough. Let’s just head back.”

“So much for a ‘Hello’, Chong!”

Chongyun grumbled as he walked away, “Yeah yeah hello and goodbye, Hu Tao.”

”Oh no you don’t!”

Hu Tao ran up to him in her second attempt to surprise the boy and latched herself onto his free shoulder, “AH- Hu Tao what the hell? Don’t you have business to attend to here?”

”Eh I finished my weekly Chang the Ninth berating, I think I’m good.”

"You take a days worth of travel...to annoy Chang the Ninth?"

Hu Tao shrugged and grinned, lightly kicking her feet against the gravel. Chongyun was practically appalled. Forget her love of burying people, her dedication to just irritate someone goes beyond his world of understanding.

”Archons strike me down.”

“Careful what you wish for!”

”Do you really have to latch yourself onto me like that?”

”Of course, if not you’d just run away again!”

Chongyun could only reflect back on the numerous of occasions he had to flee from Hu Tao’s antics while he was out and about exploring Liyue.

”Can’t imagine why.”

Hu Tao giggled and Chongyun groaned, now uncomfortably continuing on his walk, having to hold Qiqi in one arm and drag Hu Tao who had now hooked her arm around his as she gestured around, pointing out the many places she had previously spotted a spirit lurking. If it were any other day, Chongyun would feel inclined to learn more, however knowing that it's Hu Tao he couldn't help but feel that maybe she was just blabbering nonsense. The boy felt himself grow warm as the amount of body heat and Hu Tao began to affect both him and Qiqi.

”Eh-“

Hu Tao let out a soft exasperation as tiny snowflakes began to flake around her. Her breath came out frosty and her hands grew cold. Chongyun smirked as he heard the funeral director begin to shiver.

“You could have warned me, you know!”

”Like you warned me when you were gonna pounce me?”

”Do you have no heart, Chongyun? Allowing me to freeze just for your sake?”

”You’re still holding on to me, if anything it’s by your own will.”

”Meanie! Qiqi, tell Chongyun he’s a meanie!”

”Qiqi wants to put Hu Tao underwater.”

Hu Tao pouted and released her hold to place her hands on her hip, finally releasing Chongyun from the discomfort and heat, “Oh why does one want to drown me so badly? Is that the only thing you can say now, Qiqi?”

Qiqi gave no retort. Tearing her gaze away from the funeral director and her eyes landing on a small pond nearby.

”Qiqi sees horsetails.” Qiqi pointed towards the small body of water by the bridge, now fidgeting, trying to wriggle her way out of Chongyun’s arms.

"Rude."

”Ah- ok there you go.” Chongyun bent down on one knee and gently helped the girl onto her feet, watching her stretch her legs a little and wobble her way towards the herbs.

Chongyun couldn’t help but feel the other girl’s eyes on him. With his cryo vision, he tried to increase the flurry he created to cool him down but it was no use. Just knowing Hu Tao was watching him with Qiqi is enough to make the blood rush to his cheeks.

Deep breaths Chongyun, you got this.

The exorcist propped an arm on his knee and pushed himself back up onto his feet, now face to face with the girl, wearing that oh so wide grin he dreaded.

“So the stone cold boy does have a heart!”

”Who said I was stone cold?”

”Says I, the one that is the receiver of said stone cold behaviour!”

”I wonder why, Tao. It can’t possibly be the amount of pranks pulled on me by the four of you now, can it?”

“Why so ashamed to show your softer side now, hmm?”

Chongyun wanted to drive his claymore through his own skull if he had to keep this up.

”I always had this side. But I only show it to those that are deserving of it, and so far only Qiqi seems to be the one.”

Hu Tao gasped, “Why I never! Don’t you remember who had to take care of you after one of your more destructive antics?”

”After the same person fed me chillies and decided to set the grass on fire.”

”My feet like to feel toasty!”

”Your practically hurting yourself by abusing your vision.”

”I like toasty feet.”

”Archons.”

Qiqi waddled back to the pair, clutching her herbs tightly and offered it to the taller, “Here gē ge.”

”Thank you, Qiqi.” Chongyun gently took the herbs and placed it in his bag, then hoisted the girl up and held her once again, “Hu Tao, stop harassing the boar.”

Said person had started to chase the poor animal around while Chongyun had been distracted with Qiqi, “Aw- your no fun.” Meanwhile the poor boar seemed to have given the boy a face of gratitude and took off running up the hill towards the village, "That was gonna be my lunch!"

Chongyun was ready to toss himself in the water.

---

The sun had soon disappeared and Chongyun was about to explode. The journey had been relatively peaceful given their circumstances. Hu Tao was chattering about her business dealings and was, for some reason, consulting Chongyun on whatever comes to her head.

"So what do you think about this—if your grandpa dies first, you get the regular services as a member. BUT—if you die first, the next funeral shall be 25% off!"

"Why are you so adamant about me dying?"

"I'm just saying!"

"Why does it matter who dies first?"

"Because!"

Chongyun was going to pop a vein if they kept this up. The next leg of their journey was going to be slightly rough seeing that he's going to be toughing it out for the rest of the night until they reach Liyue. The darkness slowly encompassed the land as the three reached Wangshu Inn, "Are we not stopping by the inn?"

Chongyun shook is head, keeping his eyes on the road, "I don't necessarily have mora, Hu Tao."

Hu Tao blew a raspberry and scoffed, "That's because you have ridiculously cheap services, you stupid exorcist." She giggled at the snarky—childish remark but Chongyun could only groan,

"Whatever, we're just going to walk throughout the night, It's only another half hour before we reach the harbour...if you can control yourself."

Hu Tao let out a gasp and crossed her arms, "What does that mean?!"

"Hey keep it down, Qiqi is sleeping." Chongyun was quick to hush the loudmouth. Qiqi was sleeping soundly in his arms, her head hanging over his shoulder with a thumb stuck in her mouth, "You don't want to wake her and have her wish death upon you now do you?"

"Oh to be cursed by a zombie, how tragic!"

"Just shut it so that we can make it there without any further problems."

Hu Tao stuck out her tongue and huffed, giving in and lugging herself to catch up with him, "But it's night time!"

"Says the night owl."

"Hey—I got up bright and early and took an entire day just to get to Qingce Village, if anything you'd understand why I'm tired."

Yes Chongyun wanted to drown himself in the water, "You dug your own grave on that one, Hu Tao."

"Jokes on you, I've already prepared my burial site."

Chongyun ignored the girl and kept moving forward across the bridge towards Guili Plains.

"Yuuuun, I'm tired!" The girl complained and began kicking around, stomping her feet like a child begging for ice cream.

"If you're really tired, you wouldn't be kicking arou- OW!" One of the small pebbles Hu Tao was playing with went flying right for the back of Chongyun's head, "Hu Tao!"

Chongyun had immediately stopped in his tracks to take one look at Hu Tao, now lazily kicking dirt as she walked up to his side, "But I'm tired, and I have sooo much work to do tomorrow."

"By work do you mean pranking Xiangling, making stupid poems or tormenting me?"

"Rude! I'll have you know I actually do have parlor-related work that I actually do!"

Chongyun scoffed and began to walk forward once again, "Yeah, every once a week."

"Hmph, is that really all you think of me as?"

"Yes—well no, I know that all you do is important and that you'r- ok no that's not the point!"

Hu Tao was now grinning from ear to ear, her casual cheeky smile plastered on her face, "So Mr Exorcist does like me!"

Chongyun went red at his admission. While yes, he believed fully in Hu Tao and her work, she was a pain in his butt. Always saying anything regarding spirits and the afterlife is something he shouldn't worry about. With their clashing professions you'd think they'd try and work it out together—but no, Hu Tao just dismisses the poor exorcist. It takes all of Chongyun's remaining energy to not strangle her.

Regardless of that, Chongyun admired her fiery passion and her dedication to her job, and maybe envy's her just a little, but that's not something he ever wants to admit, even to himself

"In your dreams."

"You like me!" Hu Tao tilted her head, now inching closer until she's all up in his face, "See, you're all red!"

"Thats-" Chongyun was turning redder by the second the closer the Funeral Director got, "It's because you're too close!"

Hu Tao hummed, clearly not paying attention. Chongyun could not tell whether she was actually completely out of it because she was tired or distracted with something. Something he's too stupid to figure out.

Hu Tao made no effort to pull back, now walking with a sway in her step, she began to lean on to Chongyun for support before falling dramatically into his one arm with a hand to her forehead, "Oh how the mighty have fallen! I must be too exhausted to move any further! Will the noble knight help this poor maiden's plight and carry her back to Li- HEY!"

Chongyun dropped the girl onto the dirt and let out a short snicker, "I'm not carrying you. I'm already carrying Qiqi."

Hu Tao sat upright, folded her arms and looked up at the boy pouting, "Mean!"

"Whatever—just get up and let's keep moving." Chongyun extended a hand to her, Hu Tao caught by surprise but took it nonetheless with a cheeky grin.

"So...if you weren't carrying Qiqi, would you carry me?"

"No."

"Oh come on," Hu Tao stood in front of him, blocking his path, "I'll carry Qiqi and you can carry me! Wouldn't you help your poor poor exhausted bestest friend so that she can-"

"No."

....

"I don't hear a denial for bestest friend though~"

Chongyun was ready to take up on Qiqi's idea and throw her into the water instead, "I don't help idiots that can't handle a few extra steps."

"So much for different means to the same end, Chonggers." Hu Tao pouted again, turning her nose towards the sky with a small 'hmph'.

"I help people with actual problems. Not carry them to Liyue because they didn't plan ahead."

Hu Tao huffed and twirled around, walking by his side once again, "Fine—I wanted to at least say goodbye to everyone before I leave. But I guess I'll have to go on my journey tomorrow completely exhausted~"

...

Wait...what?

"You're...leaving?"

"Of course! You need to expand your business to other regions if you want to thrive, Chonggers."

Chongyun raised a brow, "I know that but-...so this is just a business trip?"

"Aw, is the Chonggers gonna miss me?"

"You wish."

Hu Tao shrugged and grinned, "Eh worth a shot."

Chongyun was silent for a moment. Waiting for Hu Tao to give any further information. But nothing. The world went silent for the first time in a while, only the sounds of crickets and sleeping hilichurls could be heard along with Qiqi's light snoring, "So...where are you going?"

"Oh? So now you're interested?"

"Well you didn't exactly give that much information, Hu Tao."

Hu Tao turned her gaze away as they reached the flight of stairs leading to the village just up ahead. Chongyun found it hard to read the girl but he couldn't help but feel like she carried a bit of a solemn look in her eyes.

"Hu Tao...where are you going?"

The girl only grinned as she looked towards the boy, "Oh it's nowhere really important. It's like another of my little trips around Liyue."

"So, Jueyun Karst? With the Adepti?"

Hu Tao shook her head, now skipping up the stairs, "Like I said Chonggers, nowhere important!"

"Hu Tao, where exactly are you planning to go."

Hu Tao for the first time in a while, looked hesitant. Worry graced her facial features and Chongyun's heart began to race.

"Hu tao...where are you going?"

The shorter flashed a nervous grin, twirling her fingers before she spoke, "Inazuma."

....

"WHAT?!"

"Qiqi hates the both of you."

Chapter Text

"Hu Tao no—do you even realise what you have just signed up for?!"

The Funeral Director leisurely walked by as Chongyun was stopped in his tracks, "Yup, I have Beidou booked to depart tomorrow with the Traveller!"

Qiqi was less than amused that the two had awoken her from her nap. Chongyun had abruptly come to a stop and practically screamed in her ear the moment Hu Tao dropped the name of her destination. Qiqi liked Chongyun—but in this moment she wouldn't hesitate to drop him off Mt Tianheng along with Hu Tao.

"Hu Tao, that is an incredibly stupid idea."

"It's not stupid if you don't try."

"And even more so if you do."

"If it's so stupid, why don't you follow me then?"

Yeah right—she fucking wished, "I'm sorry but I don't have a death wish. Going to a closed nation that hates outlanders is is in fact—a very stupid idea."

Hu Tao had also halted in her steps, just standing a few feet away from the boy in white apparel, "Well if you take my offer now you get 25% off the next funeral~"

Chongyun was ready to smash his head with his own spirit blade. He didn't know how to label the girl in black standing in front of him. Should it be brave or absolutely stupid. Now—Chongyun isn't exactly smart, well...to be precise 'street smart'. The boy definitely can excel in many academics if he tried especially when it comes to his Thaumaturgy, but he is naive, gullible and falls for the easiest of scams. He's a pushover and he knows that as much. But by the archons, this is the stupidest thing he's ever heard in his lifetime.

"Hu Tao be serious-"

"Hi Chongyun, I'm serious!"

The blunet was ready to strangle her, "Hu Tao! This is a dumb idea! Do you even know of Inazuma's political climate right now?!"

Hu Tao waved her hand around, flicking her wrist and blew her tongue, "Politics Schmolitics—I'm just going in to promote my business! I heard that they are quite in need of my services~"

Chongyun dragged his hand over his face, "I don't know about that, Hu Tao. I don't really have a good feeling about Inazuma."

"That's probably just your weird intuition speaking, Cloud. It'll be fine!"

"It's incredibly stupid!"

"No it isn't! I'm simply....taking the opportunity to expand upon something I'm passionate about! Something you wouldn't understand, now would you, Cloud?"

Chongyun wasn't in the mood to argue or combat Hu Tao's idiocy, "I take precautions to not trigger my condition, it doesn't mean I'm any less passionate about my work than you are about your business."

Hu Tao's jovial grin wouldn't match her eyes but she could only sigh, "Oh Chongyun, Chongyun! Are you really going to let your condition be the excuse to everything you limit yourself to?"

The exorcist was a bit hesitant, but he didn't want to press the issue any further. He liked the way he's living and he has decided to keep it that way, "That's not- no we're getting off topic here!"

Hu Tao giggled, swinging herself around to continue walking forward, Chongyun clutching onto Qiqi tightly as he ran up to her to catch up, "Hu Tao stop!"

"Qiqi wants you both to stop moving." The little girl felt lightheaded in Chongyun's hold. With both the noise, Chongyun's abrupt movements and....Hu Tao's presence was the perfect combination for a hammering headache.

"I'm sorry Qiqi," Chongyun rested a hand on the small of the zombie's back and rubbed it gently to soothe her, "Now for you."

Hu Tao hummed, turning her head up slightly to meet his....almost worried gaze, "Have you really thought this through?"

"Oh? And why do you suddenly care so much."

Chongyun choked on his breath and felt himself flare up, however, Chongyun never turned his gaze away from the girl, "This is Inazuma we're talking about Hu Tao. Are you truly aware of what's going on there?"

Hu Tao folded her arms, "Of course! I'm not one to rush into a place without doing proper research!"

Chongyun squeezed his eyes shut and inhaled deeply, "Archons, if you're actually serious about this I'm going to start thinking that you actually do have a walnut for a brain."

"Oh come on, the Traveller is going too and you don't seem so worried about them!"

"That's because they have their own agenda that I have no business sticking my nose into."

"And yet I am your business, hmm?"

"Yes- I mean no! I mean yes- no...that's..." Chongyun's pale white skin and turned almost as red as Hu Tao's vision. The boy was absolutely flushed and had mixed up his own words, "You've seen them up against Osial they're more than capable of handling themselves in a fight with a God."

"Oh? And I'm not capable of a fight?"

"You said it yourself Hu Tao, you never liked combat. Don't lie to yourself."

Hu Tao was aloof to his words and continued to walk, now seeing Liyue Harbour in the distance. The harbour was bustling, even at night. The tiny dots of light forming a tiny, starry night sky on land. The distant waves could be heard crashing against the shorelines and even at this hour when everyone returns to their home, is still just as active as it was in the day.

"It'll just be a quick job, I'll be back before you know it! All my work is stationed within Narukami Island."

"It's not that easy, Hu Tao. It's hard, even for outsiders to leave Ritou. How can you expect to make it inland towards Inazuma City when it's hard as it is to leave Ritou to the rest of Teyvat."

Hu Tao fanned her hand and blew her lips as Chongyun caught up to her, "Well I...obviously, I'll obtain my entry permit at the Outlander Affairs Agency and see where it goes from there! Besides, how would you know any better if you haven't been there either?"

It was clear as day that Hu Tao was definitely reflecting back on her decision. Her posture said enough, the girl refused to look him in the eye and her head would tilt down to think. There was always a pause before she spoke but she never let it linger any longer to avoid suspicion. Chongyun however, was none the wiser.

"There's a very good reason why I haven't been there, Hu Tao. The Sakoku Decree has been in effect for a year already and seeing how many are willing to flee from Inazuma, I think it says enough."

The two have now come to a stop, just at the bottom of the hill before the bridge into the harbour, "So you've heard things from Kazuha, big deal. That's because he's a wanted criminal! I'm legally entering and exiting the country, no huff, no buss!"

"I wouldn't say that it's exactly legal."

"Ok yAnFei,"Hu Tao may be ginning, but she was taken aback. She was definitely not expecting to meet this much criticism, especially from the exorcist. The girl felt her heart flutter at the thought but...it's just nothing more than a friend worried for their own friend, right?

Yes that's right. That's how the both of them thought of this. They're just worried for the other, that's all.

"You're going to be trapped in Ritou if you even try. I doubt that the Kanjou Commission will let you leave once you step foot on the docks. It's a stupid idea!"

"You're face is stupid."

"Hu Tao!"

"Chongyun!"

"Qiqi hopes you get stuck there."

"Qiqi," Hu Tao gasped, hand clutching her shirt where her heart is, "I am so hurt! How dare you wish me, your bestest friend, such an ill fate!" The taller girl had brought the back of her hand to her forehead and turned away dramatically, "Chonggers, tell her how mean that is!"

"So much for bestest friend." Chongyun snorted and rolled his eyes.

"Aw, is the Chonggers jelly?"

"Chongyun, archons. And no- why on earth would I?"

"You didn't seem to have problems with your other nicknames earlier~"

Chongyun slapped a hand to his face, Qiqi caught by surprise let out a small gasp as the boy, once again, dragged his poor hand over his face, "Gods—I was originally going to actually defend you, but given your antics, it's probably deserved now."

Hu Tao gasped and began to let out forced sobs, "Chongie..."

"Chongyun."

"Shut up! How could you, after our talk, I thought you cared about me."

Chongyun was left flustered once again, gritting his teeth and turning his head away, "Please shut. Let's just head into the harbour and forget this ever happened."

"Hmph! Like sister like brother." Hu Tao stomped her foot as Chongyun walked on ahead, Qiqi blowing her tongue in the most melancholic way.

Hu Tao ran up behind the boy as they made their way across the wooden bridge, "Qiqi is not Hu Tao's friend, and Chongyun gē ge is not Qiqi's brother, stupid Hu Tao."

"But you always call him gē ge."

"Because Qiqi likes Chongyun gē ge. Gē ge doesn't share Qiqi's mom and dad because they are not here. While Hu Tao is mean, I despise Hu Tao."

"Oh come on! That's all in the past!"

"Ok that's enough from both of you." Chongyun stopped in his tracks and turned to face the shorter, finally putting Qiqi down onto her feet, allowing the girl to stretch while still keeping her small hand wrapped around Chongyun's finger.

"Yay! My turn to be carried!"

"Bold of you to assume I'd even carry you."

"Hmph! Cold as always, Cloud! Anyways~ I'll be taking my leave now, and I expect to see you tomorrow by the docks!"

Chongyun groaned softly, "Since when did I say I'm coming to see you off?"

"Are you really not going to see me off after you've been so adamant about not going to Inazuma?"

Chongyun took in a deep breath, squeezing his eye shut and allowing his head to fall. He squinted one eye open and took a glimpse at the girl, now tilting her head and raising a leg to look down at him, "Yeah yeah, I'll be there."

"That's the spirit! I'll see you tomorrow then, Chonggers." Hu Tao grinned, now satisfied, and skipped on ahead towards the stairs leading into Feiyun Slope. Chongyun was still left mouth hanging open. He reached out a hand and wanted to call out to her, but decided against it and let his hand fall to his side as he watched the girl disappear into the brightly lit harbour.

"Qiqi thinks she's stupid."

Chongyun let out a laugh and ruffled with the set of lavender hair, earning a small irritated huff from the zombie, “Ok Qiqi, we get it. But saying such things isn’t nice, ok?”

“But why- gē ge also said that he doesn’t want to say goodbye to her.”

Chongyun's back stiffened at Qiqi’s comment, “I…it’s just a retort against her antics, Qiqi. It doesn’t really come from the heart.”

“Oh? So Chongyun gē ge likes Hu Tao?”

“No.”

“Qiqi thinks you’re lying.”

“She’s just a friend, Qiqi.”

“Qiqi knows that. Does that mean gē ge thought Qiqi meant it romantically?”

“No!”

“So…gē ge has a crush on Hu Tao?”

“No!”

“Lies.”

“Qiqi no.”

“Qiqi yes.”

Chongyun continued to walk, finally making his way to Bubu Pharmacy completely flustered with Qiqi in tow.

---

“Chonggers!”

The blunet groaned as he reluctantly marched down the docks to greet his friend just standing by the Crux fleet’s ship.

“Good to see that you actually came to see me off!” Hu Tao had a backpack hanging by one shoulder and a sling across her body, By her legs were...a couple other heavier looking bags that she couldn't have possibly dragged here by herself.

“It’s not like you gave me a choice.”

“Hey—at least I didn’t break into your house and drag you by the ear!”

“No, you did that last time when you wanted me to bring you to Dragonspine. I’m not risking you doing that again. My ear was sore for days.”

"Oh wow! I never knew I held such strength, unless little Chonggers is just weak!" The brunette snickered, receiving only the roll of the eyes from the boy.

Chongyun took a glance around the dock for any other familiar faces. So far, he only recognised Beidou and Kazuha who were busy loading up the ship with supplies.

“Where’s….everyone else?”

Chongyun looked down at the girl, she wore the same smile from the day before. It felt wrong, fake, forced. He hoped to whatever God that Hu Tao may as well be second guessing herself. But even that is rare for the Director...and he didn't like the look of it on her at all. The girl however only cocked her head to the side, “Whatever do you mean, everyone else, yunyun?”

“I’m going to ignore that,” Chongyun groaned at the nickname, “So where’s Xiangling, or Xingqiu. I get that maybe Xinyan, Yanfei and Yunjn are busy, but I’m pretty sure the other two would at least take the time to say goodbye.”

Hu Tao remained quiet, now only humming her hilitune and turned to face the ship just docked by their side, “Come and help me with these bags, Chongyun now would you? We don't have all day!”

Hu Tao took a little hop and and shielded her eyes from the morning sun, looking over the horizon in the direction of Inazuma. Chongyun on the other hand, was left to wrangle with her heavy backpacks and follow just closely behind.

“Hu Tao- gods what did you even pack in these bags?!”

“Just some supplies and advertising! You can never be too prepared, Chongie!”

“Clearly not prepared enough...”

Hu Tao ignored him and skipped on ahead, walking up the gangway into the ship as the boy struggled just right behind her.

The sailors could only look upon him in pity as he dropped her bags right next to a pile of crates, “Hey- be careful with my things!”

“You’re the one that left me to carry it!” Chongyun took a moment to heave, cracking his wrist and walking up to Hu Tao’s side, “Is that the only reason why you called me here? The others could have helped with those too, you know.”

“It’s called being a gentleman, yunyun! Didn’t your Aunt teach you any manners.”

“First of all, I only just started training with her- “Of course you’d begin training with her.”

Chongyun let out an irritated sigh at the interruption, “Secondly, seeing that she can barely control herself from trying to kill Xingqiu at the mere sight of him, no.”

“Eh can’t really blame her.” Hu Tao giggled at the thought of his overprotective aunt and Xingqiu running in fear.

Beidou noticed the two standing by the deck and grinned, instructing her crew to handle the rest of their inventory and walked up to the pair, now bickering amongst themselves, “Hey, love birds! Glad to see you two again!”

“Beidou!”

“Love birds?!”

The two cried out in unison. One absolutely mortified and one in delight to see the captain finally make her appearance, “Two very different answers, interesting—anyway Hu Tao. You got everything you need?”

The two girls ignored the clearly flustered exorcist as they went over the usual. Expectations for what were to happen at sea and their entrance into Inazuma.

Chongyun however was left to wrangle with his thoughts, still processing whatever Beidou said. He should be more composed, he shouldn’t be bothered by such a silly little comment, “Troubled, Chongyun?”

“Ahh- Kazuha, please don’t sneak up on me like that!”

“Apologies, I just came to check if everything was alright and noticed you seemed very…out of it.”

“I’m…alright, thanks.”

Kazuha folded his arms, not buying the exorcist's words, "Are you sure?"

"I'm fine...nothing to worry about."

Kazuha remained silent for a moment, observing the boy take a few worried glances at Hu Tao before changing his gaze to anywhere else except the girl, "Chongyun."

"H-Huh?"

"If...you're worried about Hu Tao, I don't blame you but..."

"What?! No- I mean no- I....she can take care of herself. I'm not worried!"

The white haired boy shook his head and allowed his hands to fall to his side, "Chongyun, I understand your worry. It's rightfully so, in fact I think that she should...stay back here in Liyue."

Chongyun wanted to speak, he wanted to ask. He wanted to know so badly. Chongyun doesn't know everything that's going on in Inazuma, but Kazuha does....and yet, why does he feel so hesitant. He's not sure if he really wants to know. It'll save him the worry of what might happen while she's there.

But why the fuck does he care so god dam much?

"Chongyun...it's more than just the Sakoku Decree. There's a reason I left, and Hu Tao...," Kazuha looked at the girl, eyeing the vision sitting nicely on her back, "She carries a vision. And...let's just say it's not safe for someone like her to be there."

"Wha-What do you mean?"

"Chongyun, the Vision Hunt Decree is still ongoing in Inazuma, and is more dangerous than ever. I wouldn't advise anyone to visit there, not her and not you."

Chongyun watched Kazuha's usual kind smile fade, his face was dark as the samurai reminisced on the past, "I....Kazuha if you don't mind me asking, what...happened."

The poet immediately snapped out of his trance, giving the younger a soft smile and walked off just as Hu Tao finished her talk with Beidou, "Wait, Kazuha- “Just one final check, are you sure you want to do this? There is no backing out once we bring the anchor home.”

Chongyun watched as Hu Tao took one glance at him. Her face was hesitant, and Chongyun could only stare as she looked back at Beidou, “I’m sure, more business the better amirite?”

“Hah- I like your answer!“

The pair walked back to the poor boy, clearly still red from Beidou’s earlier comment, “Now say your goodbyes! But don’t get all mushy mushy on my deck, alright?”

The older woman gave Chongyun a well deserved hair ruffle and walked off, leaving him to try and fix his now messy set of blue hair.

“I hate it when she does that.”

Chongyun patted down his hair, awaiting a retort from the girl. She only watched him in an awkward silence.

“So…why aren’t the others here?”

“Cloud- this is just a short business trip! Nothing I should worry the others about!”

“Then why ask me of all people to come down to the docks and see you off?”

“Easy, you can help carry my stuff!”

“It’s not like I’m the only one with hands, Hu Tao.”

The girl shrugged and began to list of their friends counting by her fingers, “Because you're strong! Besides- Yanfei, and Xinyan are always busy. Yunjin's manager will freak if Yunjin does as much as lift a pencil. Xingqiu would rather watch us drown than get his clothes wet and Xiangling is...well, she's probably mad at me for the last prank I pulled.”

“I don't exactly blame most of them, and I don't think Xingqiu's is entirely correct or fair..."

Hu Tao shrugged again. Chongyun could not tell whether the girl was joking or not. His face was already red from her comment about him, but the poor boy couldn't bare to ponder on the thought any further. Did she just come up with excuses to be alone with him? No- there's no way. Thats absurd...she's just being annoying...right?

The world fell silent once again. Now in the early hours of the morning, the docks were much more peaceful. The sound of seagulls calling out for their mate across the ocean waters and the water beneath crashing against the starboard. Chongyun rubbed the back of his nape, unsure of how to bid his goodbye.

“Uh…so…I guess it’s goodbye then?”

“Why the solemn look, Chonggers? Are you actually gonna miss me?”

“In your dreams, Tao.”

Chongyun didn't know whether Hu Tao was right or not. He never liked the idea of travelling to Inazuma when it seems so dangerous. The boy had been condemned to listening to Beidou's story for a while now and it seemed to be either making him absolutely paranoid or just feeding him enough information to not do something stupid. Again, Chongyun will refuse to admit that he'd actually miss the girl.

They were silent again. Chongyun however, still made no effort to move, “Are you sure you want to go? You can still back out.”

“Aiya, why so worried, Chonggers?”

“Hu Tao, I’m serious! Even Captain Beidou warned you, it’s dangerous!”

“And of all people, you are the one that’s worried?” Chongyun would recognise that smug look on her face any day. He sighed and crossed his arms, clearly avoiding any form of eye contact with her.

Just by the gangway, another familiar face appeared. The blonde haired traveller and their flying companion had finally made their way onto the ship, giving a little wave to the two, "Beidou! We're here!"

The four looked up to the Captain just behind the wheel, who grinned and nodded, waving for Chongyun to get off the ship, “Hu tao, we’re leaving soon! Get your boyfriend off the deck.”

“Beidou- no!” Chongyun let out a whine, almost like as if a son embarrassed by his mother.

"I wasn't aware Chongyun was your....uhm..." Lumine approached the pair, now causing Chongyun to back away towards his exit.

"NO!" The two yelled in unison once again. Exchanging a glance and then turning away, Chongyun more than desperate enough to leave the ship.

"Hey, where are you going, Mister!" Paimon yelled at the boy, resting her tiny hands on her hips.

Chongyun sighed, "I'm not going to Inazuma, Paimon. I just came to help this walnut with her things."

The two newcomers turned to look at the girl in black. She tipped her hat and grinned to greet them, "Hello Traveller, Paimon!"

"YOU?!" Paimon screeched.

"Oyaoya?"

"YOU!"

"Me?'

"YOU!"

"Paimon enough." Lumine stuffed a piece of mora meat into their companions mouth, Paimon immediately savouring the delicious tender meat and hastily munching on the rest of the delicious meal.

"Sorry about Paimon. I think she's still traumatised after our last excursion together." Lumine looked a little worse for wear, completely exhausted, bags under their eyes and dragging their backpack by the foot, honestly you'd probably mistake them for a zombie.

Chongyun looked to the funeral director, not even the slightest hint of amusement written on his face, "Hu Tao, what did you do?"

"Nothing!"

Paimon glared at the brunette, still making her way through her meal, "Says the one-...who keeps talking-....so- mmph!"

Lumine shoved another piece of mora meat into the tiny girl's mouth, "Again, sorry about her. I think it's just all the talking and walking we've been doing. Why are you going to Inazuma?"

"Oh business reasons! Popsicle over here can't get enough of me apparently."

"You asked me to come-"

"I think he's attracted to me." The girl cupped her mouth and whispered into the Traveller's ear.

"Oh put a sock in it, Hu Tao."

"One says to thee when thou doesn't want to leave."

The trio heard the boy groan, "Well I clearly can't get it through your thick skull that Inazuma is dangerous."

"Hey! You're the little worrywart here, Mr Exorcist."

The exorcist in questioned rested a hand on his hip and another gesturing his hand out, "And you're not? You refuse to listen to me even now!"

"Ah ah, keep that attitude up and you might just die of high blood pressure!"

"Keep your stupid coffins out of this!"

"You're the one that keeps worrying over nothing, Chonggers."

"Nothing?! This is Inazuma we're talking about, Hu Tao! You simply refuse to believe just how dangerous this is!"

Paimon turned to her blonde haired companion, "Paimon thinks we should go." The small girl flew off in haste, the Traveller bidding the two goodbye and following their companion.

"See! Now you scared them away!"

"Me?! I- whatever. Just make sure whatever you're doing is something you can't take back, because you clearly don't see how stupid this idea is."

Hu Tao turned away, hands folded and eyes closed in a futile attempt to look irritated, “Fine- I'll cut you a deal to ease your worried butt! My trip is for a week, if I’m not back by then, you can come find me!”

“I’m sorry- find you?”

“You heard me,” Hu Tao rocked back on her heels, clasping her hands behind her back, “Since you’re so worried, it’s only fair you come and rescue me if I’m not back by the end of the week, right Chonggers?”

“There’s no…rescuing! Hu tao- I can’t just walk up to their archon and ask her to release you from Inazuma.”

“A shame, usually you’ve always been there for me!” Hu tao pouted, obviously in a futile attempt to guilt trip the poor exorcist.

“That’s because you’re always following me around and getting yourself in trouble."

"Mean!"

Chongyun wanted throw himself onto the dock and run for it.

"RAISE THE ANCHOR!" Beidou screeched, her crew immediately making a dash for the anchor, whizzing by the two.

"Guess this is goodbye then." Chongyun rested a hand on the railing just by the gangway.

"I'll see you in a week, Chonggers!"

"Now you're just cursing yourself to get stuck there."

Hu Tao giggled, running to the edge of the deck as the boy made his way down onto the wooden platform, "CHONGYUN!"

The wind was now blowing a gentle breeze, the boy looked up to the caller of his name, seeing the bright smile painted on Hu Tao's face as she waved ecstatically as the boat finally began to move, "BÁI BAI! I'LL SEE YOU SOON!"

Chongyun watched, unmoving. He didn't know why, but we was glued to the ground. Hu Tao remained waving, looking back at Chongyun before retreating back into the deck. Still, Chongyun never left.

He waited, and waited, until the ship disappeared over the horizon. By that time, the blazing heat from the sun began to affect him. And yet, he didn't move, he didn't want to. He couldn't help the feeling bubbling inside him. Something telling him that something very wrong is going to happen. His intuition, it tells him to go, swim after them, tell them to jump overboard and swim back. Because anything is better than sailing to that god forsaken land.

Chongyun forced himself to shake the feeling off, looking over the waters one final time towards Inazuma, "Hopefully the next time I see you, I'll see you here."

Hopefully...

Chapter Text

"I'm sorry but—I really don't know, Chongyun. Why do you ask?"

"Sorry Chongyun, I have a lot of clients coming in. Hu Tao? Sorry, I don't know."

"Hu Tao? Why are ya suddenly asking this, bud?"

"Oh I was unaware of her departure, my apologies I- yes I'm coming Yunning! I have to go, Chongyun."

"Hello my liege. Hu Tao? I have not a clue, why. Do you miss her already~?"

"Qiqi hopes she gets lost there."

Chongyun walked down Feiyun Slope, befuddled. Shoulders slumped forward and his mind racing a million thoughts. The boy was more than curious as to why their other friends were not present to bid farewell. He made no effort to mention her destination to prevent questioning, leaving his friends just as confused as to why their exorcist friend had a sudden pique in interest in the funeral director. As much as it confused even himself why he was so bothered by it, he had made his rounds around Liyue Harbour and came out empty handed.

There was only one other place he hadn't visited yet, one person that should at least know about her visit to Inazuma. Chongyun wanted to know—he wanted to know so badly and it's making him go crazy. What would drive her to go to such a dangerous place just for business?! Surely- surely, they should know something.

Nightfall came quick and it was finally the end of the day by the time Chongyun arrived at the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor. The ferrylady didn't seem to be present by the door, so Chongyun knocked. No response. He knocked again, nothing.

"Hello?"

The boy heard nothing but the sound of the kettle whistling inside followed by the shuffling of footsteps. Chongyun carefully creaked the door open and stepped inside. The interior was simple, it had this warm tone, lit by the candles on the walls. Different types of flowers along the edges accompanied by benches. And in the centre of the room, an unoccupied reception desk. He was no stranger to this place, unfortunately. Given how eccentric Director Hu can be, the poor boy can always find himself within the walls of the parlor.

However, the place was strangely empty. Not that they have frequent customers, a funeral parlor would have no need of such, but the lack of undertakers gave Chongyun an uneasy feeling. Not even Meng or Zhongli was around.

"He..llo?" Chongyun called out again, walking up to the desk, hoping to find a bell of some kind. The hallway behind was unlit, but he could see a faint, tall figure emerge from the darkness.

"Ah, Chongyun. Good to see you again, apologies, I was just brewing some tea."

"No need, Mr Zhongli. I just...uh..."

"It seems you may have something to say. Why not come around the back and I'll brew you something to drink."

Chongyun bowed and shook his head, "I- you don't have to do that, Mr Zhongli. Besides, I don't necessarily drink hot stuff."

"That's quite alright, we should have some ice here for you. Come, I believe that I already know why you're here." Zhongli smiled and disappeared once again. Chongyun now forced to walk to the side and enter the reception area, following Zhongli through the hallway.

Chongyun has been to the back of the parlor on a few occasions. Mostly for parties hosted by his friends for a birthday or a hangout spot for all of them besides Wanmin, when they get the chance. Although, hanging out being slim to none. It's an odd choice of location but it beats being under the sun for a whole day.

Chongyun finally spots the light at the end of the hallway and comes into a small dinning room with a kitchen off to the side and another hallway towards the offices. Chongyun took a seat and Zhongli poured himself a cup of tea, and then handing Chongyun a glass of ice and lemon, pouring the rest of the tea in, "I hope you enjoy ice lemon tea. I'm aware of your preferences but I thought I'd add a little more flavour, just for once."

"I—thank you, Mr Zhongli."

"Please, Zhongli is fine. How have you been, child?"

"Alright I guess. Uhm...I still haven't made any progress in my training but I'm trying."

Zhongli smiled and hummed, sipping the steaming hot tea, "I'm sure you'll do great. I do hope Director Hu isn't troubling you as much?"

No- she is, she most definitely is, "I'd...say it's about the same. Hu Tao is just as eccentric as ever."

"Ah, that girl. She can never stay in one place. Anyways, I assume you're here to inquire into Director Hu's whereabouts?"

Chongyun nodded. He had to continue to play the part of clueless friend. It's odd enough as it is that Chongyun of all people is the one bothering people regarding the director. But the events at the docks would replay on the back of his head and he can't stop until he finds out why he, of all people, is the person Hu Tao would disclose her destination to. Is there an ulterior motive or was she just messing with him.

Chongyun was at a lost. He knows Hu Tao as a prankster but to go as far as to say that she's going to Inazuma for business is a bit of a stretch, "I..yes."

"I unfortunately do not have a direct answer for you. Director Hu said that she would be leaving on a business but she refused to tell us where."

Once again, Chongyun had hit a dead end. Not even her own employees know where she is. He could feel his heart in his throat and his breathing became noticeably shallow. Clammy hands reached for the cold glass as he brought the cooling beverage to his lips to calm himself, "Mr Zhongli...I...uh..."

Zhongli gave him an inquisitive look, placing his cup down and legs once crossed now both feet flat on the ground, "Chongyun, are you alright? You don't look too well."

"No- I'm fine."

"Is there something wrong with the drink? I can look for some-"

"No! No- it's...f-fine. I just..." Chongyun gulped down the rest of the tea in a sorry attempt to cool himself down.

"Is this one of your excessive-yang energy episodes?"

Chongyun hastily shook his head, grabbing the tea kettle and pouring the now warm drink into the icy glass, "No- I just...Mr Zhongli, I...know where Hu Tao went."

Zhongli's face went pale. The older man across from Chongyun went silent and his line of sight was never met with the other. Just when Chongyun was starting to think he fucked up, Zhongli spoke, "Is that...why you reacted as such? Is...there an- issue with Director Hu's whereabouts?"

Chongyun was just about to down his second glass of ice tea when he stopped. The boy set his glass down and toyed with his gold cuff around his wrist. He had no idea what to say, how do you tell someone your friend had just gone to one of the most dangerous nations in Teyvat and for some reason- decided not to tell anyone else except you. Sure he pressured her...but the others would have done the same...right?

"I...she....uhm," Chongyun looked down into his glass, his rippling reflection taunting him as his fingers grazed around the rim, "She....went to Inazuma."

Zhongli slumped into his seat, setting the teacup on its saucer. There was a moment of silence, Chongyun could hear his own heart beating in his head before the older finally said something, "I...see."

...

I see?

I see?!

"Mr Zhongli, are...you alright?"

Zhongli coughed, "Apologies Chongyun, I just was....I was hoping you wouldn't say that."

Now it was Chongyun's to give Zhongli a confused stare, "I'm...afraid to ask, but did Hu Tao mention going to Inazuma before?"

Zhongli raised his cup again, blowing at the steam, "She would...occasionally mention it as a place of interest. But I never really took her as serious," Zhongli sighed after taking another taste of his tea, "I'm not one to question Director Hu whenever she announces a business trip so I never pressed her further on the subject. It seems that I may have been too careless."

Chongyun shook his head again, now refusing to touch his drink and pulled his hands closer to himself, "No, it was my fault, Mr Zhongli. I was with her when she left, I should have- no I could have...I don't know. It's..."

"I understand it's frustrating, seeing your friend wander off to such dangerous territory. But do not blame yourself."

"I just...I don't understand why she'd do this."

Zhongli watched the boy slowly take the drink in his hand once again, munching on small pieces of ice, "I don't have an answer for you, Chongyun. Maybe Director Hu's overzealous nature got the best of her."

Chongyun said nothing in return. Zhongli got up from his chair and pulled out a seat next to the boy and giving him a reassuring pat on the back, "I believe this trip is for a week," Zhongli asked and Chongyun nodded, "Then let us have faith that she will return within the week."

Chongyun finally finished his drink, finally calming himself down, "I-...alright."

Zhongli smiled, grabbing both their empty cups and and got up from his seat, "Good. Let's both just maintain a clear head, and hope for her safe return."

---

Chongyun did in fact, not maintain a clear head for the rest of the week. Days passed as Chongyun would wander around Liyue, training, trying to go about his daily duties taking care of Qiqi or helping his friends. But Chongyun was just not all there. His mind would wander and he would stand at attention every time he heard even the slightest of movements. The desperate worried part of him wishing it would be Hu Tao, surprising him from the bushes.

But she never showed.

"Qiqi doesn't think gē ge is ok."

"No- I'm fine, Qiqi."

The tiny zombie was silent, releasing her hold around Chongyun's finger and dropping her head.

"Qiqi doesn't like it when gē ge is sad."

No response.

"Qiqi doesn't like it when gē ge lies."

....

The end of the week was nearing and people were beginning to notice just how out of it Chongyun was. He was loosing spars, he wasn't even taking up Xingqiu's clues. Soon enough, he stopped exploring all together, even declining Baizhu and Qiqi's herbal gathering commissions, just to stay at Liyue Harbour. He was getting restless, he didn't know why, but he was unable to keep up the act for long.

"What's wrong my dear Chongyun?"

"Nothing."

"Hmph. Do you really think that, as your best friend, I wouldn't notice what's up? You're not even training anymore!"

"Ok."

Xingqiu waved a piece of paper in his face, grinning, "Well I have a new clue for you! How about I go with you this time and check this out! Let's see if you can finally properly exorcise a demon this time!"

"No thanks."

Xingqiu sighed, falling back against the tree they were laying against, "Huh—and to think you'd take this opportunity when Hu Tao is gone to go about your business undisturbed."

Xingqiu received no response.

And then the day finally arrived. It was agonising, waiting this long. Chongyun would occasionally drop by the docks to look out for any ships, hoping and praying that Hu Tao would emerged. Chongyun was stressed and hadn't bothered to maintain himself. He was going mad. He didn't know why—but he was. And he hated it. It's normal to be worried right? Right?!

Nightfall came and still no Hu Tao. He checked with the ferrylady at Wangsheng, no word from her either. Chongyun was freaking out, Hu Tao's words beginning to play on loop in his head as he grabbed a fistful of his own hair, desperate to pull it out if he could muster the strength to.

"Since you’re so worried, it’s only fair you come and rescue me if I’m not back by the end of the week, right Chonggers?”

Yeah right...no you're on your own in this, Hu Tao.

Or so he thought. Chongyun's actions betray him as he takes glances down at the docks at every passing ship. For the rest of the day, he's in a constant battle of whether to run up to the next ship headed for Inazuma or just take the dive. Why did he care...why?!

"So Mr Exorcist does like me!"

“So…gē ge has a crush on Hu Tao?”

"I think he's attracted to me."

"BĀI BAI! I'LL SEE YOU SOON!"

Chongyun looked back on that moment. It was stuck in his head the whole week, and for once, Chongyun wasn't annoyed at the presence of the Director. But the one time he could appreciate her, she was already miles away. The way the gentle breezed tousled with her brown twin tailed hair, and the way her floral red eyes would just shine that bit brighter around him. And her smile as she waved goodbye.

Stop it. She's done nothing but irritate and torment you.

...

But…then whenever she laughed. It makes his heart skip a beat.

Snap out of it Chongyun!

"My liege, are you even paying attention? What's wrong with you?" Xingqiu lightly hit the boy on the shoulder, snapping him out of his trance.

The group had finally taken the time out of their busy schedules to sit down by a nearby grassy patch of hill just near Chihu Rock's open area overlooking the ocean. They had Xiangling prep them a delicious meal for their little picnic, the evening was aglow with the bright lantern lights around the harbour. Chongyun tore his gaze away from the ocean to look at his amber eyed friend, "What?"

"He's really out of it." Xinyan commented, stuffing herself with a nice hot and steaming bāozi. She lazily grabbed another piece, resting her weight on one hand and looked at the two boys, "So what's up, bud? Missin Hu Tao already?"

"You wish."

"Lies." Yanfei added, earning a glare from Chongyun and a unique set of expressions from the rest, "What?"

"I don't miss Hu Tao. She's only a pain in the backside."

Xingqiu laughed, using his chopsticks to pop a jade parcel into his mouth before reaching for another, "Hah—and yet the entire week, you've done nothing but sulk around the harbour!"

"What does me sulking have to do with Hu Tao?"

"This is the only time you've ever looked this depressed, and it's when Hu Tao is on a looong business trip."

Chongyun rolled his eyes at Xingqiu, taking a bite from his popsicle, "So what? She's been on business trips before."

"Well she's never been gone for any longer than a few days," Xiangling chimed in, taking a spoonful of jueyun chilli chicken before she continued, "I've been on week long trips to Mondstat and you are never this upset."

"Even more reason to believe that it's not because of Hu Tao then."

The five exchanged a glance, then looked to the exorcist sitting just a few inches away from them, overlooking the ocean, spaced out once again, "Besides, even if it's because of her, is it really that bad to be worried for a friend?"

"Where could she have possibly gone that would make you this upset?" Yanfei asked, mouth full of tofu.

”Nowhere.” Chongyun said, softer this time. He wanted to scream it out loud. He wanted to tell them so bad- but theres some sick part of him that tells him no.

They’ll just freak out even more.

"Could it be.." Xingqiu muttered under his breath, a mischievous grin forming, "Does our dear Chongyun have a crush on Hu Tao?!"

Now they have Chongyun's full attention. The boy's head snapped towards them, in a mix of utter shock and embarrassment disgust.

"What?!"

Chongyun's face was red, the others now looking at the two boys stare each other down, "Yes, Chongyun. You have a crush on our favourite parlour director, you're just too afraid to admit it!"

"Or too stupid to realise it." Yunjin whispers, only low enough for Chongyun to hear her.

"That's a very stupid assumption to make! You all know she irritates me the most!"

Xiangling shrugged, "I don't know Chongyun, you both do hang out quite a bit despite your claim- "Aaaand you were just asking me about her the beginning of this week!"

"He asked you too?" The four girls asked in unison, all eyes on Xingqiu. The three pyro girls giggling while Yunjin turned to look at Chongyun with a pitiful look.

"Oh Chongyun, I didn't know you were this desperate?" Chongyun refused to respond to the blunet boy, turning his back towards them and finishing the last of his popsicle.

"Hey guys? Maybe we're taking this a bit too far. Something else might be bothering him, you know?" Yunjin said softly.

Once again, Chongyun is grateful for Yunjin's presence. In a circle filled with quite the energetic bunch that would do almost anything in their power to make him overheat, one sane person that he can just quietly hang out with is a nice change.

"Oh it's fine, Yunjin. I'm sure our dear Chongyun just needs help with getting the girl."

"I-I mean...that makes sense as well."

Nevermind.

"I don't see what's so wrong for being worried over a friend's safety." Chongyun said softly under his breath but loud enough for the others to here. He just wanted them to drop the subject and forget whatever Xingqiu had just said.

"You're in denial~" Xinyan whistled as Chongyun threw away his popsicle stick to the side. One legged propped up and his hand lazily hanging over it. Clear thoughts Chongyun, don't get agitated. They're just messing with you—like they always do.

Unfortunately, given Chongyun's mental state along with the stress and now, the new intrusive thoughts of him possibly having a crush on Hu Tao is proving to be a challenge for the boy in blue and white. Chongyun was beginning to feel the heat and he was starting to get irritated.

"I'm being serious."

"I am too, dear Chongyun! I'd like to know when the wedding will take place~"

"Shut up, Xingqiu."

"So you do like her! How cute~"

Chongyun was ready to take the plunge.

"So, when's the wedding, dear Chongyun? I'd like to be prepared for when I become best man!"

“Aw! Make sure to invite me for the catering!”

Xingqiu snickered and placed a hand over his mouth, not so subtly whispering to Xiangling, “Remember to add tons of spices too!”

“Me and Yunjin can definitely be your music!” The others joked, “I can try to convince her to even do something more lively just for you guys!”

Yunjin was hesitant, but soon enough joined in on the fun, "I...guess I can try."

“I’ll prepare the marriage cert!”

Chongyun was starting to feel himself get warmer. He squeezed his eyes shut to try and concentrate, he needed to make sure he didn't snap at them. He's done this plenty of times before, who's to say he can't do it again?

“I said- shut up!”

“What’s wrong my liege? Too embarrassed~?”

Chongyun was being pushed over the line. No longer was he irritated- he was pissed, pissed that he wasn’t being taken seriously. In fact- he is almost never taken seriously. The boy can be stupid and naive, but now- he’s tired. Tired from the exhausting week, tired of thinking about Hu Tao, tired of his friends shenanigans, tired of allowing the relentless teasing….

…tired of never being enough.

Here he sits amongst his friends, all mostly well-liked, popular, successful and rich. The entire friend group all consisted of people that could live carefree lives doing what they loved.

Meanwhile…him? The infamous heir to the Chonghua Clan, the family of exorcist that have perfected their thaumaturgy across many generations. And he- the next heir of his generation, could not even see a single spirit.

Forget their problems. Forget their friendship. Forget it all, Chongyun was tired. He doesn’t know why he cared so much. Why would he care about just another prankster in their little circle that would never hesitate to set him off the next chance she gets.

Chongyun felt like nothing more than a clown. Entertainment. Someone to mess with when their bored- just because they can. Feed him things that hurt him. And when they’d laugh about it, he could never enjoy it with them. He can hear them laugh in his head, and here in their presence, it only grows louder.

How does it feel to be left out of the fun? How does it feel to be this ball of positive energy you could never truly enjoy? How does it feel to be the butt of the joke and forced to deal with it because you have no one else to turn to?

“You know, I’ve always wished for a child to be named after me. How about it, my liege? You and Hu Tao could name your first son afte-“

Chongyun had enough. He slammed his hand against the grass and soil and grabbed Xingqiu by the collar, bringing him up to his face, “SHUT UP! SHUT THE FUCK UP!”

For once, Chongyun finally felt anger. He felt the anger- but never lapsed into the world of darkness. For once, Chongyun can think, feel and see the world around him.

“I- Chongyun are you-“

“Shut the FUCK up, Xingqiu. I am TIRED of being your little dog. I am tired of all of you messing with me!” Chongyun spat in his face, crumpling Xingqiu’s once pristine, clean and wrinkle free clothing.

“Yun, it was just a joke I-“

“Oh everything is a joke when it comes to me now is it?! How many fucking years will it take before you’re finally satisfied?! Do you really think I like it when you set me off?! It’s so funny to all of you when I try to do my fucking job and it turns out to be a bust because you tricked me?! It’s so fucking funny to you when I pass out and wreck everything even though you know it hurts me?!”

Chongyun dropped Xingqiu back on the ground, his gaze was piercing, it was dark and sharp. Chongyun was fucking livid.

“Your friend is halfway across Teyvat in a nation who’s archon detest outlanders like us. An archon that would kill her without second thought, and here all you can think about is- is..”

Chongyun couldn’t bring himself to utter those final words. He may be angry at all of them, maybe even Hu Tao. But he would never admit to it. He would never say he cared so much…never…

“She’s…what?” Xingqiu’s eyes widened. He was terrified as it is to see his friend lose his cool like this, but another to hear the bombshell Chongyun had just accidentally dropped.

“Chongyun, where is Hu Tao?!” Xiangling stood up from her seat, finally snapping Chongyun out of his fury like state.

The boy brought a hand to his head as he fell back on to his knees. He felt lightheaded and sick. Did he lose control again?

No…he couldn’t. He could remember it all. What the fuck did he do?

….

What the fuck did he say?

“Chongyun, where is Hu Tao?” Xinyan had now joined in.

The exorcist began to replay the series of events in his head. The fatigue after working tirelessly the entire week had finally caught up to him. His head hurt- it hurt so bad. The heat of the moment wasn’t helping his condition either. And yet he never lapsed.

“Archon that…hates outlanders,” Yanfei paused, her heart thumping rapidly, and she prayed to the archons that she was wrong, “…Don’t tell me…is she…”

Yanfei and Chongyun locked eyes. Both clouded in fear, in fear of what the other would say, what their response would be when they spoke.

“Did Hu Tao go to Inazuma?”

Chongyun had to take a moment to regain his senses. To process what had just happened. His body responded with nothing but a nod.

“That’s…illegal, not to mention completely dangerous! Is that why you…oh…”

Chongyun’s breathing slowed, and now his mind was clearer. He looked at his friends worried expression. He looked down at Xingqiu, and his face says it all.

Xingqiu looked terrified of him.

Chongyun winced and hissed as he felt a sharp pain in his hand. Looking down at the hand he slammed on the ground, he found splinters from the sticks, blood and a completely red, dirty soiled hand.

“I…what…”

“Chongyun, are you ok-“

Chongyun’s head was pounding, and he could feel the blood rushing. For once in his life he could truly feel the intense emotions flowing through him.

And he felt scared….

“I…I didn’t…”

“Chongyun- sit down first and calm yourself.”

Chongyun shook his head, desperately clamouring onto his feet, "I gotta go."

“Wait! Where are you going?!”

“I’m..." Chongyun was halted, he needed a clear head. He wanted to just go home and wake himself from this terrible nightmare. He wanted to wake the next day to Hu Tao pounding at his door and whisking him away to gods know where, "I'm leaving."

"Chongyun NO WAIT-" He heard all his friends cry out, but Chongyun ignored them.

"Chongyun, the Vision Hunt Decree is still ongoing in Inazuma, and is more dangerous than ever. I wouldn't advise anyone to visit there, not her and not you."

Chongyun's head was pounding. Kazuha may be right, and his brain is screaming how bad of an idea it was. But...he couldn't but feel a pull in his chest, telling him he needed to go. He needed to get there, make sure she was safe. Then smack the shit out of her for taking such a dangerous journey, cursing himself for not trying harder.

In who's right mind would go to Inazuma in the first place?

---

"Are you out of your mind?! Does your friends or family even know?!"

"Qiqi hopes gē ge doesn't get stuck there."

Chongyun stiffled a heartless laugh and rested a hand on the little girl's head, "I appreciate the sentiment, Qiqi. But let's just hope Hu Tao makes it back safe too, alright?"

"Fine, but Qiqi is allowed to call her stupid."

Chongyun laughed a little more that time, patting her head gently, "Captain Beidou, I'm more than sure that I want to go with you to Inazuma. I've already left letters for Auntie Shenhe and my clan to read. Please...I need to find Hu Tao."

Beidou shook her head, loading another crate onto the deck of The Crux, "Look—I don't know what happened to Hu Tao, we left as soon as we dropped her and the traveller off to gather supplies. That being said, I'm not risking another one of you kids going missing in Inazuma."

"Beidou, I promised her I'd go after her. I'm not going to break that."

Beidou heaved as she placed the crate down, resting her head against it to take a moment to ponder, then stood up again to look down at the boy, "I thought you didn't like her."

"Why does everyone think that?! She's my friend—yes she annoys me but it's not like I wanted her to go to Inazuma either?!"

"Ok ok jeez! Someones irritable."

"I- sorry, Beidou." Chongyun's gaze shifted to the bottom of the deck as he fixed his one backpack over his shoulder.

"No no—it's alright. If anything, that girl is the one to blame for making you shoulder such a responsibility."

Chongyun remained quiet and was lost in his thoughts. Again, he didn't know why he—not even Zhongli, only he knew where she went. He was so deep in thought that he didn't notice a the man walking up to his side.

"Ah, Mr Zhongli! Don't tell me you want to follow him too?"

Chongyun turned around and just by the gangway entrance, was Zhongli, "Unfortunately I cannot, Captain Beidou. As much as I would go after her myself, someone needs to stay behind and manage the parlor. I just came to wish Chongyun all the best on his journey."

"Whatever you say, Mr Zhongli."

The others watched as Beidou scurried over to the other side of the ship with a handful of other supplies, "Why...are you here, Mr Zhongli?"

Zhongli took out a small, but heavy bag and dropped it in Chongyun's hand, "These are some funds from the parlor, I also do hope that it may guarantee you safe passage through Inazuma."

"I- thank you."

"I should in fact, be thanking you, child. I would...I wish I could go in your stead, but I'd assume that would only anger Beelzebul."

"Beelzebul?"

Zhongli only gave him a smile and shook his head, "Nothing, child. I just want to wish you all the best on your journey. And please, take care of Hu Tao. I feel like there's more to it than just business ventures."

Chongyun felt the older man pat him on the shoulder, "How...did you know I was going after her?"

"I had the feeling you couldn't wait any longer."

Chongyun felt a tug on his pants, looking down, he saw Qiqi holding up piece of cloth carefully wrapped around itself. He recognised it from their herbal gathering sessions she would bring on occasion whenever he took her outside of Liyue Harbour, "Qiqi almost forgot. Qiqi is suppose to give this to gē ge."

"I—thank you Qiqi, but you don't have to."

Qiqi was however—adamant on her little gift, "Dr Baizhu's orders, Qiqi must give this to gē ge so that he and...Hu Tao....comes back healthy and safe."

Chongyun shoved his gifts into his backpack, letting the gravity of the situation slowly dawn upon him. His movements slowed and he seemed hesitant, "Mr Zhongli."

"Yes, Chongyun?" The older looked down at the boy, who seemingly began to grow more nervous by the minute.

"I...if I don't...make it back, tell no one else to come after us—and tell my family and friends I'm sorry."

Zhongli didn't want to answer. The elder didn't like the idea of allowing the young boy to wander around the dangerous nation when he had so much going for him. Zhongli wanted to go, he wanted to pull the boy back and tell him no. But Zhongli knew better.

If he went, then who knew what would happen next? Who knew what would happen to Teyvat if the gods struck against each other once agian.

"I—won't allow anything to happen to the both of you, Chongyun. That's a promise," Zhongli dug his hand into his pocket and fished out a little old pink trinket, handing it to the boy, "Here, take this with you. It was a gift to me from an old friend."

Chongyun took the item and gave it a closer examination, still not fully understand that it was that he was holding, "What...is it?"

"An omamori. Usually the maidens at the Grand Narukami Shrine would hand these out as a form of luck or protection. It helps to ward off evil spirits, according to my memory." Kazuha had appeared out of nowhere and right by the exorcist's side, earning a yelp and a tiny scream from both the cryo users.

"Ah- yes, I believe Kaedehara has summed it up quite while."

"I..." Chongyun looked at the omamori, still questioning it and doubting it's use and attaching it to his vision with his tassel, "I think my constitution already does its job of keeping spirits away, but thank you, Mr Zhongli."

"I'm sure you both will be fine. But if you find yourself at your wits end, you may take it out and see what happens. Maybe your prayers may be answers, and your problems will soon disappear in a blink of an eye."

Kazuha gave the consultant a weird look, "You're starting to sound like Guuji Yae of the Grand Narukami Shrine, Mr Zhongli. Have you two met before?"

"Ah yes, but it was a long time ago," Zhongli began to reminisce, looking towards Inazuma, "I was merely recounting the words of an old friend. It's best you head off now, the wind is still gentle and the storm is still brewing."

Zhongli placed a hand behind Qiqi's back, and guided her towards the gangway, Qiqi looking back to give Chongyun one last little wave. The two boys waved back, still unsure on how to process the consultant's words.

"So...you ended up following her," The boys watched as the other crew raised the anchor, prepping to disembark from the harbour, "I hope you remember what I said."

Chongyun looked to Kazuha, still hesitant. He could jump back down onto the deck, he could still swim back before it was too late. Chongyun didn't understand it himself, why he would do something so outrageous.

He cared....was just worried, that's all.

...

"I do, I just..." Chongyun had no answer, not for Kazuha, and for himself.

Kazuha chuckled, gesturing for the boy to follow him, "It's alright, sometimes we do some crazy things for the people we care about."

Chongyun watched as Kazuha walked on ahead to the upper decks. The boat finally setting sail and The Crux flag waving high.

"Kazuha," The white haired boy turned to the caller of his name, "I...want to know what happened in Inazuma."

"He WHAT?!"

"Yes, the boy went to Inazuma."

"I heard you the first time. Why didn't you stop him?!"

Zhongli felt cornered. Here he sat peacefully within the walls of the parlor, sipping tea when the door was busted down and immediately bombarded by angry and frantic screaming from Chongyun's friends and family, "Chongyun is the kind of child that would continuously push himself to do what's right, stopping him would only have made him feel incompetent."

Chongyun's own mother slammed her hand on the reception desk, "I don't care about that right now, he will die if he steps foot on that cursed island!"

Shenhe had remained, for the most part, composed despite her own condition, trying her best to reassure Chongyun's mother, "We have to go after him. That boy isn't properly trained to face a whole army and an archon."

"He isn't strong enough for any of that, period!" The boy's mother spat.

"Allow us to go," Xingqiu took a step forward, avoiding Shenhe's murderous gaze. He felt the air tickle his skin the closer he got to Chongyun's Aunt, as if there was a dark aura surrounding her, "We believe we...are at fault for this. I don't know why but we teased him a bit for being overly obsessed over Hu Tao and..."

The five friends recoiled within themselves as now Chongyun's own mother look down at the five, "I- oh for Morax sake!"

Zhongli coughed, "Now now, I believe Chongyun has left behind a note for your clan, correct?"

Shenhe held back the older woman, who's face was contorted into something that could only strike fear in the teen's souls, "Yes."

"And I believe he mentioned that no one should go after him, correct?"

The silence was loud and tensions were high in the small room of the parlor. Everyone knew deep down how Chongyun was, a selfless child that wouldn't want to put others in harms way—of course he would say that. But are they really going to respect his wishes just like that?

Zhongli removed himself from his chair and came around the desk, now coming face to face with the others, "Know that I would have gone if I could, it's in no way Chongyun's responsibility to look after Director Hu. Unfortunately I cannot, but know that I will not allow harm to come his way."

"And I'm suppose to just believe you?" Chongyun's mother was now practically throwing herself at the taller, albeit being held back by Shenhe.

"Mr Zhongli, but we have to-" Zhongli raised a hand, immediately silencing Xingqiu, "Trust me when I say, I won't allow harm to come to both of them."

"You five won't be involved in any of this! It's your fault he's there!" The distraught mother pointed an accusing finger at the teens, tears now streaming down her face, tired puffy red eyes and her light blue hair unkept and strands sticking to her cheeks.

"Miss we- "NO! I don't want to hear any of it!"

"Please Miss, we care just as much about Chongyun as you do- and Hu Tao. They're both our friends." Xiangling was shaking, both her hands and legs. The poor girl felt like she could pass out at any moment. Her heart was heavy and her mind clouded with fear and anxiety. Looking into the same eyes that carried the exact same emotions of her own, the eyes that had been so graciously passed on to their friend, now shouting accusatory claims at them, neither of which she could ever truly blame.

She couldn't—no, none of them could ever feel more guilty in their lives than they do now. The usually livelier people of the group all now unusually quiet and pondering, none of them wanted this.

Shenhe had to take in a deep breath to maintain her composure. It's bad enough she's in such a high intensity environment, that she had to come face to face with Chongyun's eccentric and sociable family and be placed in a room with just a few too many people that made her uneasy, but now she had to keep a level head just to prevent the mother from killing every single person in the room.

"It's not their fault. They couldn't have predicted either of them journeying to Ina...zuma." The woman slowly released her hold around the elder who was weakly grabbing at the air and sobbing madly.

"Shut up! Shut up! That's my son—tell me why did you let him go?!" The sobbing woman whipped around and cursed at the gentleman standing before her. He stood unfazed, looking down upon her with a sorrowful heart.

"Miss, I apologise deeply on behalf of the Director and the Wangsheng funeral parlor, but this decision was solely made by Chongyun alone. Even if I had tried to go, he would insist on following me. I'm sure you of all people would know this about your son."

The woman was breathing heavily, muffling her sobs as she bit her lower lip. She squeezed her eyes shut now falling onto her knees, Shenhe barely catching her as the mother could only sob harder, hiding her face in her hands with her only comfort being Shenhe's hand rubbing her back.

"I understand you're worried, Miss. I myself can't help but wonder why Director Hu would venture there on her own, but arguing like this will get us nowhere."

"Then what do you suppose we do?! I can't just sit here and wait, hoping he'll come back home safe!"

"I'm afraid...there's not much I can say to assure you, but please do believe me when I say Chongyun is in safe hands."

Shenhe eyed the man in black, she knew him from his occasional visits to her master's abode. She felt uneasy knowing her nephew, one of the few humans she can tolerate, is out on some dangerous adventure beyond her reach. But looking at him, someone familiar to her, she couldn't help but feel inclined to believe him.

"Miss, I think we should just...trust him for now. There's nothing else we can do."

The mother's face was hollow, like someone was completely stripped of their emotions. It's almost terrifying her she would glare daggers into the once reigning archon—now mortal, "Fine. Let's go," She grabbed Shenhe's armed and dragged her out of the parlor, leaving the teens and Zhongli by their lonesome.

"Mr Zhongli, you can't seriously just expect us to stay here?!" Xingqiu exclaimed, turning to look at the consultant the moment the wooden doors slammed shut.

"My child, I do not enjoy this as much as you do. But there is truly nothing any of us can do."

"Then what kind of safe hands is Chongyun in," Xinyan stepped forward, now slightly agitated, "None of us know anyone from Inazuma! I'm sorry but I find it hard to believe that Chongyun will be able to find anyone to take care of him there other Cap'n Beidou or Hu Tao!"

"I am watching over him as we speak. Please, be rest assured that no harm will come to Chongyun-" Their conversation was cut short when they heard the ringing of a little bell and the front door creaking open, followed by footsteps and a head peaking inside, "Now if you'll excuse me, I have something I must attend to."

Zhongli allowed the Ferrylady in, holding the door open as the friends ushered outside, "And please do not come up with any ideas, we don't want more people getting stuck in Inazuma."

And then the door slammed shut.

---

"A storm?!" Chongyun fumbled with the telescope in his hand, almost dropping it and falling off of the crow's nest as he practically screamed. In the distance, thunder and lighting struck the waters and a dark cloud hovering just above, circling the the entirety of Inazuma's isolated archipelago.

"Yes. Its persistent thunderstorms makes it hard for anyone to enter...or leave. To be born in a Nation Closed by Thunder, it's a hard life," Kazuha wistfully looked back on his memories, "Funny how this is now my fourth time going through the electro barrier."

"You've gone through this three times?!"

Kazuha chuckled, "Once when I was fleeing Inazuma as a wanted ronin, twice when we dropped off your friend."

Chongyun wanted to ask. He wanted to ask so badly. What exactly was the decree- what happened to Kazuha. He knew it wasn't his place—heck he's not even that close to Kazuha. In fact, Kazuha had only been flashing a small smile every time Chongyun asked. Chongyun was not one to pry but..., "I...Kazuha, what exactly happened to you...in Inazuma?"

The samurai hesitated, lost in his thoughts. The sound of thunder crackling and lighting flashing before their eyes immediately sending him back, "I..." Kazuha reached a hand over the samurai plating on his shoulder, grabbing something latched onto his belt wrapped around his body, "Take a look at this, what do you think this is?"

A deactivated vision sat in the samurai's bandaged hand, drained of its colour. It was stylized with a newly shaped vision, assuming it to be from Inazuma, "A...vision? I don't know, it doesn't seem...to have any elemental energy."

"It's a masterless vision, once wielded by a dear friend of mine, before he lost it in battle," Kazuha brought the vision closer to himself, smiling softly, "I've been trying to reawaken it for the past year now, not even the traveller could do anything about it."

"Was...this the result of the vision hunt decree?"

Kazuha nodded, "Many like you and I have have had their visions seized and stripped of their ambitions, and this..." Kazuha carefully placed the masterless vision in Chongyun's hands, "This is the result if you combat the Shogun's decree. I can't guarantee you that your status as an outlander would grant you immunity to her decree, since...you're not suppose to be there to begin with."

"...So...your friend is..." Kazuha's silence was Chongyun's only answer, "Oh, I'm...sorry."

"He lost in a duel before the throne after he challenged the vision hunters. I—...could only hope to continue on his legacy, and find someone to master his vision."

"A duel before the throne?"

A somber expression graced Kazuha’s features as he looked into the distance, "It's when a person challenges the Shogun, and whoever emerges as the victor gains a second chance. The defeated...they would face divine punishment."

Chongyun's thoughts turned to Hu Tao, would she dare? No—she couldn't, she smart but there's no way she can fight against the Shogun and her army. She wouldn't...try to find the Shogun...would she? Just the thought of Hu Tao standing her ground against the thunder makes his hair stand. Then again...she's not one to fear death.

"Then, why not try to fight with the resistance?" Kazuha turned to look at the younger, "Isn't that what your friend would've wanted?"

Kazuha was mouthing his words, unable to utter a single sound to give his rebuttal, "Ah—I'm sorry, it's not my place to...say such things."

"No no, it's alright. I don't believe you are entirely incorrect, Chongyun," Kazuha gave the blunet a smile, "I guess I'm just so caught up in doing what I believe is right, that I'm not looking at the full picture of this whole ordeal."

Chongyun allowed Kazuha to ponder in silence, lost in his own conflict. Caught up in his own condition, believing training will guide him in the right path.

"Oh Chongyun, Chongyun! Are you really going to let your condition be the excuse to everything you limit yourself to?"

...

If only that stupid, stubborn girl stayed put....

"Kazuha?" The white-haired boy hummed in acknowledgement, "What...happens to someone, when they lose their vision; if they're not killed?"

"I-...don't know- "Hey- children! You might wanna get down here before we enter the storm unless you both want to end up on the Shogun's dinner plate!"

The two were interrupted by Beidou, yelling from the deck like a mother calling her children in for dinner. Chongyun couldn't help but wonder why on earth she seemed so calm to something that was seemingly the exact fucking opposite. Kazuha gestured his head towards the ladder and Chongyun nodded, following him down the mast as they prepared to enter the massive electro infused sea.

"Prepare for storm entry! Man the braces!"

Chongyun looked over the hull, down upon the dark waters, eyeing multiple shadowy figures watching the ship sail by. He felt uneasy, recognising them as spirits of those who passed, wandering aimlessly in the waters. Many hissed as they passed by, retreating back into deeper waters.

"Seems like they don't want to mess with us today." Beidou joined Chongyun by his side, patting his shoulder (Maybe a bit too hard) and grinning, still clearly unfazed by the thundering storm around them.

"It's just my condition," Chongyun sighed, watching the spirits fall back the further they travelled through the waters, "My yang energy drives spirits away regardless of what I do."

"Huh, guess you must be our good luck charm eh? Even the storm doesn't seem as bad today." Beidou ruffled with his hair once again, earning almost no reaction from the boy other than an even longer, drawn out sigh.

"You don't seem too happy about it."

"It's nothing, so what are we gonna do once we reach Inazuma?"

Beidou squinted, keeping her eyes locked on the dim city lights of Inazuma in the distance, "We didn't see Hu Tao before we returned to Liyue, so we'll have to anchor down somewhere near Narukami Island and give you one of the rowboats."

"Wait- you're not coming with?"

"Can't. Not with a wanted criminal on board. Don't wanna lose my trade and intel here in Inazuma, sorry bud. We're just going to have to return fo- "That won't be necessary, Beidou."

"Eh?"

Kazuha looked to Chongyun and nodded as the ship entered the clearing, "I'm going back to the resistance."

Chongyun felt his mouth drop, Beidou wearing the exact same expression, "Kazuha I know you're struggling but you don't have t-"

"It's alright. For...far too long I've been on the run," Kazuha smiled, looking back at the masterless vision resting in his hand once again, "My friend had always said that 'There will be those that dare to brave the lighting's glow'. I hope that the day will come where we face the Shogun once again. I'm done with running, let's go find your friend."

Their momentary peace was quickly interrupted by another, louder clap of thunder. A bold of lighting struck Inazuma City and a dark ominous cloud began to form, time began to slow as the electricity tickled at everyone's skin.

"What is that?! Turn the ship and remain alert!" Beidou screeched, running towards the upper deck and turning the ship nearer to the side of Narukami Island."

"What...the..."

Chongyun looked to the red-eyed boy, "The Musou no Hitotachi. Someone must have challenged the Shogun!"

Chongyun felt his heart sank, desperate eyes looking towards Tenryou.

"Ready the anchor! Kazuha, Chongyun, head for the lifeboat and find Hu Tao!"

Both nodded, sprinting for the boat and climbing aboard before dropping into the sea. Chongyun's heart was racing, pleading— to any archon that was willing to hear him.

For gods sakes...please...Hu Tao, don't let that be you.

Chapter Text

The world was dark, lighting struck everywhere around around Tenryou. Everyone's eyes fixated where the Traveller once stood, what was left was only a purple fissure, as if someone cut open a wound on their world. Everyone held their breath, anxiously waiting for any of those that entered to emerge.

Another breath...

Then another...

Then another...

The portal hummed ominously, everyone unaware of what battle could be taking place inside.

Another breath..

Then another...

A bandaged hand emerged from just over a cliff, breathing heavily.

"Thoma?!" The very owner of that hand pushed himself just over the edge to see Thoma tied up on his knees before the Raiden Shogun.

The boy was followed by another, light blue hair just peeking over the edge, followed by a struggling hand, "H....elp."

Chongyun was barely pulled over, now hunched over on his hands and knees as he desperately tried to recover from the climb.

Lightning struck again, immediately pulling the blunet back to reality to watch the scene unfold before him, the Shogun in all her glory pulling back her sword just seconds after cutting the world open.

"What's going on?!"

”I…I’m not sure.”

The two boys had just about managed to climb all the way up Inazuma City to the statue where the thunder storm had accumulated, finding the remnants of what they could only assume was another duel. Chongyun felt a lump in his throat, and his heart heavy.

"Over here!" Kazuha whispered-yelled at the boy, gesturing him to duck over a stack of crates just off to the side of the platform.

The air was tense, and time seemed to be frozen. Everyone's attention glued to where the Musou no Hitotachi struck. The boys catching sight of the opening, hearing the disembodied voices, it was almost familiar.

But Chongyun didn't care about that right now. He needed to keep himself together.

"Hu Tao..."

Chongyun made a desperate scan of the area, his spirit dwindling by the second. He hoped, he prayed, making sure his sight doesn’t fail him, just to spy the brunette girl somewhere amongst the crowd. No matter how obnoxious she might be, just hoping to see that damn girl make light of such grim situations, waving her posters and coupons in the air.

But nothing...

"I don't see Hu Tao anywhere. We have to look elsewhere, Kazuha."

"No—I have to save Thoma-" Kazuha was just about to pull himself over the platform and make the mad dash for Paimon and Thoma only for Chongyun to grab his arm and pull him back then.

"Didn't you tell me you're a wanted criminal here? The Shogun is right there and who knows what she or those soldiers would do once they see you!"

"I-"

"I know you made the decision to help, but you'll get yourself killed running in!"

The boys argument were cut off by the ground groaning, whirring. The portal-like opening began to hum, vibrating like a machine springing back to life. Everyone held their breath, unknowing, afraid.

This was the Raiden Shogun’s power, and there was nothing anyone could do.

The two boys watched helplessly as two unconscious figures were spat out and sent tumbling over the platform.

"Lumine..." The boys whispered softly, their body unwilling to move towards their friend as their companion thrusted forward, desperately shaking her friend awake.

The other laid still, the unknown person also refused to move. A girl in black and red laid face flat on the ground.

The girl's breathing was shallow, and her vision attached on her back, flickering. As if it's holding on to what's left of the allogene's ambition, her ambition. Chongyun felt frozen in place as the Shogun walked towards them, sword in hand, ready to strike the sleeping body of the two that laid limp on the floor.

Kazuha summoned his sword, watching intently as the Shogun moved closer towards their friends, "Kazuha what do w-" Before Chongyun could finish, Kazuha strucked the air, sending a gust of anemo energy flying right for Thoma, cutting the struggling man free of his binds and interrupting the Shogun with the throw of a spear.

"Let's move," Kazuha tugged the boy to move, both of them circling around and coming to an opening between Tenryou.

Chongyun crouched down, carefully followed the boy along the edge. It was only a matter of seconds before disaster struck once again.

Chongyun heard ringing in his ear as the world around him was blocked out. In a flash of lighting, he felt an immense weight collide against his side, as he was sent flying into the ravine below.

---

"Hu Tao, you really...don't have to follow us."

"Nonsense! You guys helped me escape Ritou, it's only fair that your contribution to the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor's business shall be repaid!"

"Paimon can't tell whether we a good thing or not."

Hu Tao swung her leg around, pouting, "Now that's just rude!"

Paimon shook her head and groaned, "It's not like you're new to being told that it either." The floating girl placed both fists on her hips.

Ouch.

"Paimon!"

Hu Tao grinned, "You're mean, Paimon!"

"Paimon's just saying, not even we know whether your being serious or just playing another one of your tricks on us."

"Now what's that suppose to mean? I'm merely just treating you to a meal!"

"Chongyun."

Hu Tao retracted herself, leaving no retort. Her face frozen in thought before grinning again, "Aiya, that's just how he is with me! Can't change how he is now can I?"

"Ok that's enough from both of you. Hu Tao, it's been longer than a week, don't you think it's time you return?"

"I have more business here! I can't leave now!"

"Yeah but you asked Chongyun to come find you after a week."

Hu Tao forced a smile, and her eyes dulled, "I know, but it's not like he'll take me seriously anyway."

"Oh Paimon's had it up to here! What is it with you two? If anything he seemed more worried about you leaving!" Hu Tao choked a little, coughing followed by a laugh.

"Him? Worried? About me? Aiyaya, my dear Paimon! If anything, Chongyun is enjoying the free time he has without me there to annoy him!"

Lumine rolled their eyes, allowing their two companions to continue arguing and swung the door open, only to find a frantic Taromaru barking and pacing across the counter, his barks only getting more frantic the moment the trio entered Komore Teahouse.

"Taromaru? Are you ok?" Lumine slowly approached the dog, gently rubbing his head as it whimpered. Paimon called out for Thoma, but no response.

"Ooh! A dog restaurant owner? How cute!"

The dog continued it's panicked barking, jumping up and down and gesturing towards the door.

"Hey, you can come out now! Paimon's seen you already," Paimon huffed, her eyes glued to a corner that rounded just beyond the counter, "Huh, not a peep. Ugh, so where the heck is he then?!"

The dog barked once again, catching the attention of the trio, "Is something wrong Taromaru?" Lumine stroked the dog's head gently.

"Huh, what's got Taromaru so worked up today? He's always such a good boy."

Lumine shrugged at their companion, "Maybe he's mad at Hu Tao?"

"Hey!"

"Traveller, Paimon!" The door busted open and in came running a new face Hu Tao hadn't met before. She could only guess that this newcomer was another acquaintance the Traveller had met on their journey.

"Ayaka?"

"Hello- ah..." Ayaka paused, eyeing the twin tailed brunette smiling and waving at her, "Have any of you seen Thoma?"

"No...is he not with you?"

“I…” Ayaka’s lips quivered, the usually composed and elegant figure of the Yashiro Commission now fiddling with her fingers anxiously, “Then it’s just as I feared.”

”Oya Oya? Does one require the service of the Wangsheng funeral parl- OW!” The girl in black was swiftly cut off by their floating companion with a punch to the head.

”No! Not right now! We have to save our friend!”

”Funeral Parlor? Ah- Oh no please, no! I’m sorry but we must save Thoma before they do anything else!”

Lumine looked around the little restaurant frantic and confused, "Ayaka? What...do you mean."

Distraught nosies were all that could leave the blunette's mouth before she broke down into tears. Through her choked sobbing she somehow found the strength to speak, "It's the 100th vision ceremony. Thoma is their 100th vision."

Lumine and Paimon were rendered speechless. The two turned back to the frantic dog, who now seemed to understand and let out a soft, weak whimper.

"Woohoo~" Hu Tao waved her hand, her business grin plastered on her face as she interrupted the two friends, "Sorry to interrupt but- mind if someone could clue me in on who this is and what this...100th vision....ceremony is?"

Lumine glared at the twin tailed girl, ready to pound some sense into the girl, "Hu Tao not right now, we have to-"

Ayaka tried her best to regain whatever composure she had left, taking in a deep breath to answer the not so pleasant question of the addressee, "It's ok, Traveller. I am Kamisato Ayaka of the Yashiro Commission. You may be unaware as of now, Miss, but Inazuma is not only under the Sakoku Decree, but also the Vision Hunt Decree. Anyone from the Tenryou Commission has every right to seize any of our visions. And our friend is about to become the next victim of her Decree."

"Vision Hunt Decree?"

Lumine nodded, pulling Ayaka aside to take over, "Anyone that has had their vision taken will lose their ambition. They lose a part of themselves. Some forget who they are, some forget people important to them. You have to understand Hu Tao that this is no laughing matter and that we need to save Thoma at all cost."

Hu Tao sighs and grins, summoning her polearm in her hand and twirling it around, “Aiyaya, another potentially ready customer needs saving? No matter, I shall lend you my aid as an extension of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor's friendship to the Yashiro Commission."

Ayaka previously dull and worried expression was covered quickly with her usual, composed smile, “I- thank you, Ms…uhm- “Hu Tao!”

Ayaka chuckled nervously, “Right then uhm- Miss Hu Tao I-“

"Then that seals our new found partnership, Miss Kamisato! I look forward to our future business dealings!" Hu Tao bowed, Ayaka taking concerned glances at the Traveller who could only shake her head and shrug.

”Yes, uhm...Ms Hu Tao. The Yashiro Commission thanks you both, now let’s get going.”

Ayaka was ready to grab the door handle when another hand rest above hers, pulling her back gently.

The blunette felt her cheeks tint a light red as she slowly turned towards the blonde traveller by her side, “L-Lumine?”

”No, Ayaka you need to stay here. If anything happens to us, we can’t have you getting hurt as well.”

”But-“

”No buts. What will your brother do if something happened to you?”

"Why...do you suddenly care about...me?"

"Have you really thought this through?"

"Oh? And why do you suddenly care so much."

Hu Tao glanced around. The voice echoed within the depths of her mind.

"Because you're my friend, Ayaka."

The girl grew redder, hiding her flushed face behind her dainty hands.

"Something might happen to you if you leave, stay put. We'll be back soon."

Hu Tao looked at the two, the blonde gently pushing Ayaka away from the door, slowly creaking it open.

“Are you sure you want to go? You can still back out.”

“Aiya, why so worried, Chonggers?”

“Hu Tao, I’m serious! Even Captain Beidou warned you, it’s dangerous!”

“And of all people, you are the one that’s worried?”

She wanted him to say yes. 'Yes, I'm worried! Something might happen if you go! I can't see you get hurt.' But she left without so much as just another of their banters.

"Hu Tao, let's go."

"She's planning something, Paimon can feel it."

Hu Tao let go of her thoughts, grinning up at the floating girl, "Ouch, Paimon! Even I have my limits, you know?"

...

Hu Tao wanted to imagine. She wanted to hear him, maybe she was just ignorant that day, but she found it hard to imagine her icy cold friend's panicked voice. Their arguments were nothing new to her, and she certainly wasn't new to Chongyun's tired voice giving her so much as a lecture.

Hu Tao lingered over her conversation with the flying child from earlier. Maybe that really was Chongyun when he was worried, maybe Chongyun really did care for her safety. Or maybe...that was just her wishful thinking. She wanted to hear him say it. Say that she was his friend, that he cared. She wanted to hear it no matter how hard she tried to bury this feeling.

...

Will he really come and find her? And if so...what will happen?

The trio were expected to be greeted with warm sunny skies, only to see the sky turn dark, lightning unfurling in the purple light. Tenryou Commission soldiers dashing towards the statue that towered over Tenryou. And there, a small grey cloud began to form, growing along side the crowd gathering just under.

"Just be careful!" Ayaka calls out, waving as the three followed the crowd.

Hu Tao felt sick in her stomach, trailing behind the two by a bit. What if he did come? What would happen to him? What if he was taken by the Tenryou Commission?

What if....he got hurt....

What if his vision gets taken...

What if...he...what if he....

And if he did...it would be all her fault

Chapter Text

It was a bright sunny, peaceful day in Liyue Harbour. The city by the ocean was bustling with merchants and citizens alike going about their daily errands. Down by the wharf was no different as sailors and fisherman prepped their boats for a long day out at sea.

Everyone was so absorbed doing their own thing that no one seemed to notice the group of teens hidden behind a box of crates, and a panicked lawyer screaming her head off at them.

"Guys this is stupid!"

"Mhm, yeah uh—you've packed enough food, Xiangling?"

Xiangling triumphantly held up a big backpack, grinning widely, "All in here, Xingqiu."

"Hello~? Guys?!"

The young boy nodded, untying one of the ropes holding their little makeshift boat to the port, "I'll start prepping for navigation. Xiangling could you check on the sails one last time?"

"GUYS!"

"On it!"

"Is no one listening to me?! This is crazy, completely illegal, and dangerous!" Yanfei screamed, desperately grabbing her friends who were all too busy filling the boat with supplies.

"Of course you'd say that, Yanfei." Xinyan giggled, grabbing an empty crate from the boat and carrying back onto the dock.

Xinyan and Yunjin grabbed a relatively huge crate and dumped it into the boat, causing Xiangling to scream, Yanfei even more so while Xingqiu remained unfazed, "Books? Why are you bringing so many books?!" The lawyer was shaking Xingqiu frantically, along with the boat, as the boy rummaged through his bag, ignoring the girl's concerned cries, "Stop ignoring me!"

Xingqiu took out a compass and a map from his bag, resting it inside the boat as soon as Xinyan and Yunjin had finished loading it up, "A'right, we brought everything you asked for, Qiu!"

"Are you guys actually seriou- "Yanfei, shut it. You guys remember the plan, right?" Xingqiu took the pen tucked behind his ear and pointed at the three girls still standing by on the wharf.

The two musicians nodded, Xinyan immediately wrapping an arm around the other girl with a wide smile, "Yeap! Distract everyone else, come up with excuses yada yada yada."

"Yeah no, I'm not doing that! I'm going to have to tell all your parents about this, you know! Especially you two!" Yanfei pointed an accusing finger at the two blunet(te)'s on the boat and got back up on her feet, ready to march off when Yunjin stepped in her way.

"Yunjin?!"

"Sorry Yanfei." The opera singer chuckled softly with a mischievous grin.

"Yunjin!"

Xinyan rounded the girl, placing a hand on her shoulder and practically yelling into her ear, "Who said that you had a choice." The two shoved the poor girl into the boat just as Xingqiu finished untying the last rope.

"Prepare the oars, Xiangling!" Xingqiu yelled, a cheeky smirk growing on his face as he looked down at the helpless girl.

"If we survive this, I'm taking you all to court for kidnapping, theft of a sea vessel, illegal emigration, illegal entry, smuggling, criminal intimida-" Xiangling shoved a spoonful of tofu into the lawyers mouth, calming her down almost immediately as Yanfei began to savour the wondrous burst of flavours in her mouth.

"Yeah yeah yeah, whatever." Xingqiu says, rowing the oar and giving them that extra push into deeper waters.

The boat began to sway as the boat undocked from the harbour, Xinyan and Yunjin smiling and waving to the trio as the currents pulled them further from Liyue. Yanfei finally finishes chewing her food and scrambles back onto her feet, the harbour already feeling so far away.

"You're welcome to jump overboard and swim back if you wish, Yanfei."

"I hate you, Xingqiu."

"Then you're stuck with us! We're gonna need if you if we wanna avoid trouble in Inazuma."

"Hah- what makes you think I can help with that?"

Xiangling scoops another spoonful of tofu from the box in her hand, shrugging as she brought it towards Yanfei's mouth, "Well, you know the law better than any of us, even other regions. And who better to help us break the law than a lawyer!"

"Ohoho, ohoho! You guys are bold to incriminate yourselves in front of me!"

"Come on, Yanfei. We can't just leave Hu Tao and Chongyun on their own there," Xingqiu says melancholically, resting his oar alongside the boat and reached for a book, lingering longer than necessary just staring at its cover like he was reminiscing, "Besides, we angered him. Maybe it's because of that, that he felt compelled to go there."

Xingqiu flipped the book open, just briefly scanning through each page as Yanfei watched her friend close the book before speaking, "I get that! But we're only making it worse for everyone back in Liyue by sending more amateurs into Inazuma. They are strict and not to mention that they love trick outlanders into paying more than their money's worth! Oh and let's not forget that it's possibly deadly!"

"And this is why we brought you! You know these things, so you can help us!"

Yanfei rolled her sleeves and grabbed another heavy book from the crate, holding it over the edge of the boat and finally catching the boy's attention, "Hey hey hey! We don't need to go that far- hahah....Yanfei?"

"Yanfei please...just think about Chongyun and Hu Tao for now." Xiangling measly held out the bowl of unfinished tofu in her hand to Yanfei.

The girl was now seeing red, oh how she wanted to punch Xingqiu in the face. How could they possibly think that they'd be able to rescue their friends? How can they be so sure that they were still even alive?

Yanfei stopped, she was no longer was focused on Xingqiu's pleas or the tofu in Xiangling's hand. Gone was her anger and now replaced with worry. Chongyun's tired eyes and worried riddled face the day before he left. How much more dull life would be if Hu Tao weren't there. If they stayed there any longer and no one came after them, none of them will have any way of knowing what will happen.

Maybe....she can break the law just for now.

"Argh- fine! But- you must make sure you listen to every word I say." Yanfei snatched the bowl from Xiangling's hand, sitting back down and enjoying her treat as Xiangling slid back into the same seat in relief.

"Yes Ma'am!"

"That means no fooling around, no running off to archons knows where, you allow me to do all the talking no questions asked, and if I decide to go back, we go back."

Xingqiu smiled, looking down at the book in his lap one more time before returning it to its crate and grabbing his oar again, "Of course."

Yanfei allows herself to relax, leaning back and taking a spoonful of tofu as the others began to row, "I should also mention that there is a storm barrier we'll have to pass before we can enter Inazuma."

....

Heh

....

"WHAT?!"

---

She felt nothing. Her memory was quickly fading, black spots covered her vision as the earth began to sway. It was as if something was stripped away from her. This...Eternity proved to be too much for the girl. It felt like a lifetime of fighting had taken place. She tried to remember, grasp onto what little she could remember. Why was she here. She felt faint, her memory was foggy, all she could think of— was to swing her weapon in her hand. She felt empty and lost. Powerless and weak.

Keep swinging, one, two, three, four. Then swing again, and again, and again.

What was her name again?

Keep charging, keep fighting. Keep trying, even if she could no longer draw her power from anywhere else except her own will.

Why was she here?

Her enemy charged at her, with little time to react, she braced herself for the impact only for it to be parried by a gust of wind and the shake of the earth. The blonde manipulated the elements flawlessly, dodging and weaving as they threw whatever they got at their foe. They carried a powerful aura yet she couldn’t place a finger on who it was.

Whoever they were, they lunged forward, striking blow after blow allowing her a bit of time to recover. Their style was graceful and they carried their weapon with confidence and precision.

One strike, two strikes. They actually managed to deal damage to their enemy....but they were getting sloppy.

They all could tell the battle was nearing its end. They thrusted their sword forward, only to collapse within mere seconds apart.

She was electrified, her whole body was shaking, like a bolt was striking within her. In here, wherever she was, she couldn't breath. Both of their legs gave way and they collapsed to the ground in a flash of lighting.

But she felt nothing.

...

And then she felt something, the purple that once enveloped the sky began to crumble. She took a deep breath, only to feel the cackling air ticking the hairs that stood on her skin. Her body felt light, and time began to move again. That eternal nothingness was gone and soon she returned back to the world.

What...just...happened?

An unconscious figure rolled down by her side, and another, a frantic flying child.

That's right...she was helping the Traveller. Hu Tao couldn't move her body. Her vision was nothing but a blur, the crowd in the distance was but a blob of fuzzy colour. Paimon's face of a muted scream as she looked at both her friends helplessly. Her face...Hu Tao didn't like the look on her face.

Hu Tao's memory slowly returned to her in little pieces, they were fighting the Shogun to save the Traveller's friend. Lumine leapt forward to snatch Thoma's vision, and that's when it all went dark.

The girl looked towards her attacker, seeing the bright purple glow in her eyes dim down. The Shogun had use just barely a fraction of her power and here Hu Tao laid motionless.

Hu Tao could feel the Shogun's overwhelming energy pouring out as she approached their unmoving bodies with her sword in hand, ready to strike once again. The fractal burning of wood beneath her inching closer, as the electrodes burnt their way through with every step the Shogun took. In her mind, death was near and she was more than ready, allowing her eyes to shut for one last time. Hu Tao's world went cold. But she didn't freeze.

The cold was…different. Not the kind that she would associate with death, but instead, it instilled a sense of calm in her. It felt familiar and close. Hu Tao let out a cold breath, sending shivers down her spine as it jolts her back into reality.

The girl struggled, barely able to push herself off the ground. She needed to run, she needed to get out of here.

Chongyun…needed to get out of here.

But her body was too weak. Her body could only so so much as twitch at her attempts.

Her body felt like it was being ripped apart, in one blow, she was sent flying.

Hu Tao closes her eyes for one last time, as her body fell into the ravine below.

---

Someone was humming, a sweet and gentle song. He could feel the gentle cooling breeze brush against his face as the thunderous cloud above him seemed to just fade into an obscure memory. Chongyun blinked and just like that, he was somewhere else. He blinked once more and turned to his side to see a girl flicking the tip of a needle by his bedside, "Wha..."

Chongyun felt groggy and tired. Even the slightest of movements shot pain all over his body. His sigh of defeat catching the attention of the stranger immediately, "Oh, Chongyun! You're awake!"

"Huh...yeah- uh, where-"

"It doesn't matter for now, just know that you are safe. I need to give you a few injections for some of your injuries, will that be ok?"

Chongyun nodded and the girl lifted the white sleeve on his arm, not failing to notice his bandaged hands. The boy pulled his blanket and peered under to see he no longer was in his exorcist uniform, but a white gown.

"You suffered minor injuries to your body despite how far and hard you fell, no broken bones. Your legs seemed to have absorbed most of the impact but you have suffered a mild concussion. With some exercise, you should be able to get back on your legs within a maybe one to three weeks."

Chongyun sighed, but at least he was fine. Still- he was wary and was- to say the least, puzzled that this stranger was helping him. He decided to study the girl as she gave him the rounds of injection. She was definitely not someone from The Crux, but neither did she seem like anyone from Inazuma—or at least from what little he saw in Tenryou. She looked nothing like the doushin, and seemed so gentle. Chongyun couldn't help but relax back into his bed and allow himself to feel safe.

"Ow- ok that one hurt."

"I'm sorry," The girl coughed as she pulled out the needle, "Anyway, this is your last shot for today."

Chongyun mewled, as the pink haired lady threw the needle away. The young boy sighed and slumped into his white-sheeted bed, glancing around the small hospital room he had somehow found himself in.

Chongyun looked back at the lady healing him, her hands, now surrounded by a light blue hue, hovered above his body as all the pain in his body is relieved, "I uh—apologise if this is rude to ask, but who are you?"

"That's quite alright. I am Sanganomiya Kokomi, Divine Priestess of Watatsumi Island and the Leader of the Resistance." The girl smiled with pride as she retracted her hands and turned her attention to the side table, grabbing a dry towel.

"Re...sistance?"

"I'll explain another time when you're better. How's your head, Chongyun?"

Chongyun gave her a quizzed look and pushed himself up to sit up. Blood immediately rushed to his head and it began to throb, the boy bringing a hand to his head, feeling the rough texture of gauze wrapped around his forehead, "How do you know my- agh...what...happened to my head?"

"You really don't remember?" Kokomi asked, lightly taking Chongyun's face in one hand and tapping a now damp towel against his cheeks.

"I...remember climbing up to some statue with Kazuha, we saw the Shogun and...I remember falling..." Chongyun reflected back on the bits and pieces, trying to fit the puzzle back together, allowing himself to process everything. The terrifying aura of the Shogun, Lumine, Tenryou, "Hu Tao! Where's Hu Tao- arGH?!"

Chongyun shot up from the bed, no longer leaning against the bed frame and catching Kokomi off guard.

"Hu...Tao?" Now it was Kokomi's turned to look at him all befuddled.

"She's...my friend. I came here to look for her when we..."

Chongyun allowed the memories to flood in, the unknown girl that laid limp in front of the Shogun came back into mind. She had the same all black attire and hat, brown twin tails, and the flickering light of the pyro vision that hanged loosely on her back, "She was fighting the Shogun! Did you find her there?"

"Is it perhaps the brown haired girl we found with you? Wearing all black?"

"Yes! Is she ok?!"

Kokomi nodded, "You took the brunt of the fall after you both were knocked over the cliff. Luckily you landed in water, although it was still quite shallow. Good thing Kazuha found and brought you here."

"Kazuha! Is he ok too?!"

"I see someone's finally awake." Kazuha walked into the room, giving a tiny wave to the girl as she grabbed all her items.

"I'll leave you two for now. But Kazuha, please do remember to take him for physical therapy later on." And just like that, Kokomi was out the door.

Chongyun remained quiet as Kazuha came to his bedside, grabbing a small wooden stool and taking a seat, "How are you feeling?"

"I feel sore. Uhm- how about you?"

The Samurai gently patted the boy's head and chuckled, "I'm fine but—I appreciate the worry."

"Ah- what...exactly happened?"

Kazuha takes in a deep breath, "Well, we were about to rescue Thoma and Lumine when Thoma blocked the Shogun's attack and sent alot of them flying, including Hu Tao," Kazuha pauses for a moment, "She must have hit you as we were sneaking around and then you fell into the ravine."

Chongyun struggled to remember, the only piece that fits was that feeling of falling, "I...where is she now?"

"In another room. She was the first to wake up. The Traveller told me that the first thing she asked about was you. Hu Tao seemed really worried about you."

Chongyun went red and looked down at his bed to avoid Kazuha's gaze. She was worried about him.

"Are you alright? You're all re-" Kazuha reached out to touch Chongyun's heated forehead but the boy began to flail his arms in his panic.

"I'm fine! Ha- uh what is this about physical therapy?"

"Ah- I'm sorry. I was aware of your uhm...condition but I don't really...uh"

"No no- it's fine. Uh- let's just go to this therapy thing."

---

"Chongyun!"

"L-Lumine?!"

"It's so good to see you alright! How are you feeling?"

Chongyun limped over to the small open area outside in Borou Village with a cane under one arm and Kazuha supporting him from the other side when the duo were caught off guard with a surprise hug from the blonde, "I-I'm fine Lumine."

"Ah- sorry I forgot about your condition." Lumine unwrapped their arms and took a step back.

"Are you ok now? You've been out for quite a while." Paimon looked at the young boy with a troubled look.

"H-How long...exactly?"

The smallest of them all began counting off her fingers, "Uhm the ceremony, waverider...Teppei...Nazuchi. Maybe three to four days?"

Chongyun mouths an 'oh' and turns his head away, Paimon immediately feeling a sense of regret seeing his sorrowful face, "Ah well it's not that bad! All that matters is that you're ok now!"

That seemed to do the trick as Chongyun's smile returned, "Well it's good to see you alright as well."

"Yeah," Lumine pauses, as if they were able to read Chongyun's exact thoughts as he was about to open his mouth, "You know, I never saw Hu Tao act so...I don't know, anxious? She was really worried about you." Lumine shot him a soft smile.

"So I've been told," Chongyun sighs and rubs the nape of his neck, "I find that hard to believe to be honest."

The floating girl scoffed, angrily placing her hands on her hips as she swayed side to side, "Oh Paimon can't take it! Why are you both like this?!"

"I-I'm sorry?"

Paimon huffs and stomps the air with her foot, "Both of you! Hu Tao said almost the exact same thing when we told her you were extremely worried about her! Why is it that you both just can't seem to accept that you care about each other?!"

Chongyun's heart skips a beat. Again with Hu Tao—worried? The carefree Director? Is Paimon and Kazuha really sure their both talking about the same Hu Tao here?

"I...sorry. I guess...I don't know. I'll talk to her."

"That's more like it!"

Lumine nods and chimes in, "By the way, you should really check if she's alright. She's been acting strange lately."

"I will, thank you Lumine, Paimon." Chongyun bows on instinct, forgetting the pain in his leg for formalities.

"Apupup- no longer should you address us like young man! Now you must refer to us as the Captain of Swordfish II." Paimon shushed the boy and placed her tiny fists on her fist with a smug smile.

...

Everyone blinked.

...

And they blinked again...

Lumine slaps their palm to their forehead, "Paimon no-"

"What...exactly did I miss."

Kazuha laughs and pats Chongyun on the back, "Quite a bit, but it's probably for the best. Let's get you to your therapy session first."

"We'll see you guys then. Speaking of which, let's go find Teppei, Traveller!" The boys hear the pair talk amongst themselves as they walked off, coming to a stop just before an enclosed area filled with soft blue grass and a few exercise materials dotted across the area.

And right there in the middle stood a young girl dawned in the same white gown with another, an older gentleman with a clipboard tuck under his arm.

Chongyun took a step forward, struggling with his crutch and Kazuha allowing the boy to walk off with him just trailing behind so he doesn't fall. Chongyun struggles but quickens his pace.

The two in the distance could hear the tapping of crutches and turn towards the newcomer. The brunette locks eyes with Chongyun. It's floral bright red eyes no longer sparkling and in its stead was a dull pale red. But the moment she laid eyes on her friend, alive and well, and its bright red hue slowly returned.

No she won't admit she was happy to see him. No she will not.

"Hu...Tao?"

"Hello, Chonggers! So you actually came, huh?" The girl put on her best smile and waved, obviously wincing at the pain and immediately brought her hand down back to her side. Chongyun looked at her confused, checking for any visible injuries other than the bandages all over her face.

"You're- ok, right?"

"Of course!" The girl grinned, swaying back and forth on her heels with her hands behind her back.

"That's...good."

The teens fell into an awkward silence. Chongyun was more than happy to see Hu Tao safe. The words were tickling at the back of his throat. He wanted to pull her into his arms and wrap her in his embrace, in fear that she'll leave him again. But he had to fight back against his urges. He was reluctant, scared. What would she say if he were to suddenly go in for the hug.

The seconds felt like minutes as the two stood just a few feet away from each other, hoping the other would just take the step forward in gratification of the other's safety. But no- of course, they were way too stubborn.

Seemingly tired of the awkward tension, Chongyun raises his fingers and flicks the Director on the forehead, "That's what you get for being an idiot, Walnut."

The girl whimpered and brought her hands to her forehead, sticking out her tongue, "Meanie!"

"You're definitely still the same, even after that fall." Chongyun sighs and retracts his hand. The boy was beginning to question whether Kazuha and Paimon were telling the truth.

"I'm glad you seem to be doing better, Miss Hu Tao," A soft, gentle voice spoke. The duo cracked their heads to look at Kazuha, who had remained silent throughout their interaction.

"Oya? Whatever do you mean, my dear poetic companion of Inazuma? I am completely fine, see?" Hu Tao chuckles.

Chongyun sighs, whether it's of relief or dread that her humour was still intact, he does not know, "Why so dramatic?"

"Because!"

"Archons help me." Chongyun sighs, dragging his free hand across his face, hiding the stupid smile forming on his face.

Kazuha laughs, "I am just glad that you don't seem as down as you were the previous days. You seemed so anxious about our friend here that it almost seemed out of character."

Chongyun peeked through his fingers to see Hu Tao's stupid face frozen in her usual grin, as if caught off guard by Kazuha's remark, "Eh?"

"You both seem to really care for each other, am I correct? After all, we wouldn't be standing here together if you two didn't."

Both teens were eerily silent. A red tint forming on both cheeks and an oblivious Kaedehara standing stupidly in the middle of it all, obviously not reading the atmosphere clearly. Or maybe he was, Chongyun does not know. But for now, he'd do whatever it takes to shut him up if it means keeping down this hot feeling burning in his chest.

"Whatever it is, we're glad you two are alright," A silent unified sigh was released, "It was reckless of you both to come here, but there's not much more we can do. However, you two will need to stay here until you're in better condition before we can send you back to Liyue," The caretaker shakes his head.

"So much for Hu Tao's business venture," Chongyun mumbles, barely audible but enough for Hu Tao to hear his snarky remark.

"Hey! I'll have you know I'm not done! In fact, I believe us being here is a great opportunity to promote Wangsheng Funeral Parlor to the Resistance, no?"

"Is your head filled with nothing but shit about your business? At least have some sort of empathy and not say it out loud in front of them!"

"Oya oya? But that is the reality of war, is it not!"

"I'm going to flick your forehead again."

"Oh no—whatever shall one do?" Hu Tao giggled and jogged off, mocking the boy along the way with her two, clearly functioning legs.

"That's it-" Chongyun mustered whatever energy he had left in him and, slowly but surely, waddled over to Hu Tao.

Kazuha and the caretaker chuckled at the two, "Hu Tao, please teach Chongyun the warm up exercises you've been doing!"

Kazuha smiles warmly at the two friends, but that smile did not last long. The wind blew gently by as the samurai picked up a familiar scent it carried, "Kazuha, are you alright?"

"I- yes, thank you."

The caretaker raises a brow, "You're thinking. There's something going on, isn't there."

Kazuha raises his head, staring up high among the cliff edge where the eastern wind blows from and there he sees a tuff of red hair in the distance. Kazuha's heart picks up when he looks at the face of his old friend. The two exchange a glance before the figure up top turns and walks away and once again, Kazuha's heart feels heavy as he watches his friend disappear into the distance.

"Is that- "A tenryou commission officer, yes. They must have noticed two new outlanders with visions."

The caretaker bites his lower lip before speaking again, "He...isn't going to arrest you?"

Kazuha shakes his head, "I doubt that's what he's here for," The young samurai looks at the two Liyueans again, Chongyun's scowled ridden face reluctantly following Hu Tao's movements, wincing with every stretch, "But these two aren't safe here for long."

"Surely- they won't take their visions, will they?"

Kazuha sighs, "Maybe, maybe not. But I'm not willing to take that risk."

---

A few days ago

---

"General Kujou, I assume that the outlanders have been located?"

Kujou Sara walks forth and gets down on one knee, bowing her head before Kujou Takayuki, "Yes, sir. Shikanoin has done a scope of Watatsumi Island and the outlanders are under the care of the resistance along with the wanted ronin, Kaedehara Kazuha."

The old man hummed, Takayuki stroking his greyed beard, "Focus your efforts on enforcing the Vision Hunt Decree and taking down the resistance," Takayuki picks up a stack of papers from the table and mulls it over, "I'll have someone else assigned to the outlander's case."

Sara stands up, her voice laced with a hint of worry, "Sir, with all due respect if my assumption is correct, I do not feel comfortable leaving Shikanoin alone to dea-"

"No no- you can call Heizou back to Inazuma City. Do not fret, Sara. I'll have people who are more capable to handle this case."

Sara's voice begins to shake, crumpling her hand into a fist, "Are...you saying my soldiers aren't- "No of course not! It's just...a matter of uh- staffing. That kid's better off handling his own cases anyway."

Sara bites back on her words, boiling at the back of her teeth. She was seething at how dismissive he sounded. However, she had to bury this burning feeling down below and keep her composure, "Yes- of...course. I trust you Takayuki," The young tengu bows and turns towards the door, "I shall take my leave now."

The door slams shut and a tall figure speaks from her hidden chair in the shadows, the bellow of his name enough to send shivers down his spine, "Takayuki."

"Y-yes, Lady Signora?"

"I trust that our agreements are still in order?" She twirls a flurry of cryo between her fingers with a small, menacing smile.

"I trust so, yes?" There was a questionable tone in his voice, Takayuki was trembling at just the voice of the sinister Harbinger standing right behind him.

"Trust? I need full confidence that this plan will be executed properly," Signora continues playing with her flurry of ice, standing up with confidence and grace as she slowly walked around the trembling man, "For your sake, I hope that your plan works." She snaps, crushing the flurry in her hand like it was nothing.

"W-With all due respect, Your Ladyship. I'm just not sure how else you are suppose to lure out the Guuji and get the gnosis."

Signora sighs, twirling around to face Takayuki, striking cryo where his feet once stood causing him to stumble back and fall to the ground whimpering, "Your only job is to make sure you keep the resistance at bay. Leave the rest to us. Don't put your nose where it doesn't belong."

"Y-Yes, Lady Signora." Takayuki gets on his knees and bows. He feels a heavy weight press against the back of his head, Signora's heel pressing hard into his skull.

Signora scoffs, lifting her foot and with a flick of a cape, she disappears, leaving Takayuki to ponder on his own.

---

Purple fog emitted from the ground, and the figure watched as the lady in white disappears from the factory. A ball of electro builds up in his hand.

"Hah, to think that I'd ever return here." The Balladeer scoffs as he reduces his magic into nothing more than a speck.

Scaramouche brings his hand over his empty chest where a heart should have been beating.  He inhales deeply and bites his lip with tears threatening to fall once more. He has once chance to make it count, to obtain the gods power. He sniffles and wipes his eyes, for a puppet should not cry.

"Victory feast," Scaramouche chuckles as he tilts his hat down with his hand, "I sure hope so."

For you'll be celebrating your new god.

Chapter Text

"And that makes it about 3 potential customers!" A twin tailed brunette giggles as she skips along the paved pathway alongside her reunited companions.

The three had finally met up after escaping Ritou and spending a few days of being on their own in Inazuma. The Traveler and Paimon just returning back from the Kamisato Estate after their last escapade with Yoimiya.

"Paimon still thinks you have a long way to go." Paimon whispers under her breath. "Oh? I think it's a win for the Wangsheng funeral parlor! In your face ice-pop!" Hu Tao pumps both fists into the air, showcasing her victory while the other two shrink in the background, unwilling to make any further comment.

"Ice...pop?" Paimon peeps, "Is that...Chongyun's nickname?"

"Oh- yeap! Stupid exorcist had no faith that my business would succeed! Wait till he hears about this!"

"They even nicknamed each other," Paimon whispers into Lumine's ear, with only a nod in reply, "Traveler?"

Paimon flies forward, waving frantic hands in front of Lumine, now catching the previously down Traveler's attention, "Lumine, are you ok?"

Hu Tao swivels around, "Oh? Is something bothering our dear Lumine?"

"Huh- oh uh...nothing. Let's just get to the city."

The other two exchange a glance but decided not to press further, "Ok if you say so, you better hurry then! Paimon kind of wants to do the hot pot game again with Thoma."

"Oh? Hot pot game?" Hu Tao asks.

Lumine allows the two to talk as they walk in silence. Thinking back on her first few days in Inazuma, everything seems to be going horribly wrong.

"It's where you put any food of your choice into a hot pot and everyone has to pick one from the pot and eat it! If you guess it right, you can go again and the one with the most points wins!"

All those people and their stolen visions, looking so helpless and hopeless

"Oho? So I can put Jueyun Chilli too?"

"What- uhm yes, although that sounds kind of basic to Paimon. Why are you asking?"

Devoid of their personality and ambitions. Stripped of everything that made them who they are.

"Oh nothing of it, dear Paimon."

"Are you going to torture Chongyun again?"

Lumine's head was spinning. Everything got them thinking back to the day with Kazuha...

And the unfortunate passing of his friend...

"Dear Traveller, what is it that has gotten you down?" The two in front of the Traveller had both turned their heads towards them, causing Lumine to shrink into themself in embarrassment.

Lumine looks to Hu Tao and the vision attached on her back, "Hu Tao...why are you following us?"

"Eh- what brought this up?"

"It's just...I don't know, I'm curious."

Hu Tao hums to think, "Well, I've finished most of what I have to do, so I'm here to assist you! Aaaand I get to promote my business with you as my acting bodyguard."

Lumine could see a hint of amusement in the girl's eye. Hu Tao was clearly in a joking mood and was just saying so to tease, and yet they still couldn't keep the bubbling feeling that something terrible is going to happen from rising, "You should...leave...Inazuma."

"Eh?! You too?!"

"I'm just...it's dangerous here, especially for you. You should get out while you still can," Lumine pleads with the girl, "It's not worth gambling with your life here."

"What is that has gotten you so worked up, Traveler?" Paimon worriedly asks, flying forward and placing a tiny hand on their forehead, "Is it because of...oh..."

The two recalled back on the past few days all while a confused Hu Tao was left out in the dark, "Uh- hello?"

"It's nothing Hu Tao. Just, heed my warning, please."

"No way, I still have more work to do before I return to Liyue to my distraught friends- "You mean Chongyun."

Hu Tao snaps her head to the tiny elemental being, "You- whatever. I'm not leaving until my work is finished."

Lumine sighs as the two stare down each other, "Hu Tao...if you stay here, you may die."

Hu Tao stares and pauses for minute before breaking out into laughter, "Ah Lumine, threats like that wont spook me out of here. You gotta try harder than that." The girl skips ahead while the other two can only watch and shake their heads.

"Hu Tao you don't understand, I've heard multiple stories of people dying-" Lumine pauses, the memory of Kazuha's sorrowful face as he speaks of his deceased friend stinging, "They challenged the Shogun and lost their lives-..."

"And what situation will I ever find myself challenging the Almighty Shogun or her General, my dear Lumine?" Hu Tao chuckles.

"Just trust me on this, Hu Tao. There's more that's going on here than you realise. You have no way of knowing if you'll encounter someone just as powerful as her."

"Lumine, you worry too much," Hu Tao says jovially, "Besides, I can take care of myself. Don't worry, everything will be fine!"

---

"That's a wrap for today's exercise. You both have made significant improvement given the short time you've been here. However- Chongyun we still will have to monitor your progress more carefully. We don't want you straining your leg too much."

Hu Tao snickers at the boy, kicking her legs as she lounges on the bench while the young blunet struggles to push himself off the ground. Chongyun sends Hu Tao a quick glare and receives her finger and her thumb shaping an L on her forehead and her tongue stuck out.

"My offer still stands Chongyun! You can be the first to trial run our new membership offer! Die first, and your family gets the next coffin 25% off!" Hu Tao chuckles fixing her Director's hat on her head.

"I already told you, I'm not dying, stupid walnut," Chongyun grabs his crutch and points it accusingly at Hu Tao, "Does this look like dying to you?!"

"Better safe than never, amirite?" The girl shrugs and laughs and Chongyun flips the finger at her.

Chongyun dusts off the dirt on his now dirty white pants. His black under-shirt also slightly battered from all the working out, "I'll throw this crutch at you if you mention that stupid offer again."

"I dare you!" Hu Tao sticks out her tongue before feeling the weight of another object was sent flying at her, "Hey!"

"You asked for it."

"Stupid exorcist."

"You're stupid."

"You're face is stupid!"

Chongyun slaps his face and limps towards her and removes the crutch, "Archons, get up," Chongyun extends a hand to help the girl onto her feet.

However, Hu Tao seemed more hesitant to take it. Looking up at Chongyun, she feels the rapid thumping of her heart beat faster again. The afternoon sun casting it's harsh gaze against Chongyun's frame, and his snow blue hair sticking against the sweat of his forehead. His fringe now swept back and...gods Hu Tao could not bare to stare any longer before she starts gushing at just the sight of his now exposed shoulders.

Hu Tao could not help but feel hotter. Whatever the feeling that was bubbling inside her before was now multiplied given her current circumstances. Hu Tao wasn't new to seeing Chongyun training...but up close, and him staring directly down at her.

Hu Tao bites and Chongyun quickly retracts his hand before she even had the chance, "Ok that's it, get up by yourself."

"Hey don't leave me behind," Hu Tao exclaims and scramble up onto her feet and jogs after him, "I still have some questions for you, stupid exorcist."

Chongyun grunts as he towards an archway towards the end of the village and near a waterfall, "What is it?"

"Why did you come?" Hu Tao asks. The question was seemingly innocent enough, but Hu Tao felt the yearn for a specific answer. Hoping that maybe...whatever it was would fulfil this hole in her heart.

"You asked, I came. It's as simple as that, is it not?" Chongyun turns the corner, following the path leading to the upper mountain area of Watatsumi Island.

Hu Tao chuckles, "Well I distinctively remember a certain exorcist telling me how dangerous it was to come here."

"And?"

Hu Tao stomps her foot impatiently, "Well, you came anyway! What's up with that?"

"You asked me to come get you if you didn't return within the week, how is that not ringing a bell?"

"Since when does Cloud actually listen to me?" Hu Tao giggles and gently nudges Chongyun.

Chongyun clicks his tongue in irritation, "I just- why can't you just drop it? I'm here and now we're both stuck. End of story."

"Jeez someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed today?"

"Oh- I wonder why Hu Tao? It's not like we're stuck in one of the most dangerous regions in Teyvat that is currently in the midst of a civil war that, might I add, you almost died from. Why on earth were you at the Vision Hunt Ceremony?"

"Nothing you should worry your little head about!" Hu Tao turns her head away, barely recalling the details of her time in a place where time seemed like a foreign concept, a place where even her, a wielder of the elements, felt devoid of anything.

"Oh really? You almost died, Hu Tao."

"It's fine Chongyun, you worry way too much." Hu Tao blows a rasberry.

Meanwhile, Chongyun was burning red. Worry? Worry?! "W- Wha— Hu Tao, I did not panic for a whole week, worry all our friends, sailed all the way to Inazuma and take the brunt of the fall for you to say I'm worrying too much!"

"It's not like I made you promise me to come! You came on your own accord, Mr Exorcist." Hu Tao folds her arms.

"Then why did you tell me? Why is it that no one— no one knows about where you went?"

"It's just- "No one- not even Mr Zhongli knew! I don't get you Hu Tao, you know? You never seem to take me seriously. None of our friends do! I just- I can't..."

The weight of the pass week finally seems to have taken it's toll on Chongyun. His thoughts were all in a jumble and the frightening reality of their situation dawns upon him.

"Chongyun-" Hu Tao takes a step forward but Chongyun stretches out his hand defensively, "No I- stop. I..."

Chongyun feels the guilt hit him like a brick. He didn't mean to yell at his friends, and he certainly didn't hope for that to be his...what could very well be his final conversation with them before he left, "Why is it that you told me? Did you think I wouldn't do anything about it?" Chongyun makes eye contact with Hu Tao, the girl rendered speechless.

Hu Tao gapes, then closes her mouth shut, "I...no that's not it. I didn't even plan on telling anyone- "Then why did you tell me?"

"You were very persuasive I'll have you know!"

"I'm sure the others would have been this way! Why is it that you told me to come and say goodbye, Hu Tao? What is it exactly that you want from me?"

Hu Tao drops her heads, she stomps her foot again irritated at the itching feeling building up in her eyes, "Like I said- you...were very persuasive."

"That's not it Hu Tao, why did you choose me specifically?!" Chongyun slaps his chest, almost begging for an answer.

"Enough!" Hu Tao bites her lip, but the tears never fell, "I-"

Chongyun retracts, "I-I'm sorry I didn't..."

"No...I- just..." Hu Tao pauses and takes a deep breath, "I just...wanted to hang out with you for one last time before I left. I came to be with you, not the others, you because I...archons."

Hu Tao hugs herself and turns her head away, tilting her hat down to hide her quivering lips, "I knew I'd miss you the most, even if you seem always irritated at me. Ok?! There I said it- I'll miss you Cloud. You happy?"

"You-...but what about- "The others? I spend plenty of time with them, but I rarely get the chance to have fun with you."

"That's because of my Yang energy."

"Yet every time we spend time together, even without your Yang energy, I still...just- I can't explain it but I enjoy my time with you, even without your Yang energy," Hu Tao lets out another breath, "I just...can never tell if you also felt the same, or if you really did hate me. I just wanted your attention is all."

Chongyun scoffs softly, "And you came all the way here to grab my attention?"

Hu Tao sighs and shakes her head, "I know how dangerous this place is, Yun I'm not stupid enough to do something drastic as this just for you to look my way. I just...it brings me joy just doing my job. I knew the risks, coming here was my own decision. I'm living my life the way I want to lead it, but you probably wouldn't get it anyway hm?"

Hu Tao seemed more condescending than usual, "What? Now what is that suppose to mean?"

"Mr I don't want to live my life because I allow my constitution to rule my life, doesn't get it? A shame, but not surprising."

"I'm happy with the way I'm living, Hu Tao! I don't need to go to a hot spring or eat chilli to feel like I'm living my life to the fullest."

"And yet you are always upset when we're having fun and you don't seem to remember anything about it. When we laugh and joke about the fun stuff we do, you're always sulking in a corner."

"We are getting off topic now, Hu Tao. You don't have to bring that up."

Hu Tao glares, before closing her mouth, "I guess I was wrong in asking you to come."

"Why not you try being the butt of the joke for once?"

"We were never joking or teasing you when we talked about those times you lost control! We just...enjoyed seeing you happy," Hu Tao stops momentarily to think, "Well..I don't know about the others but...it's nice to see you happy. But I always wanted you to remember some happy times with us...with me."

Chongyun steps forward to reach a hand out. How he desperately wants to grab her tight and comfort her. How he wish he could've understood this sooner, how he hated what his yang energy had taken away from him. It was on the tip of his tongue, he wanted to apologise. He wish for once, that he could understand, understand how much he actually meant to her. What was it he had done to make her feel like this.

Archons- Chongyun missed her so god dam much over the week it hurts.

"There's the two outlanders! Let's help the commission out a bit and confiscate their visions ourselves."

The vision wielders turn to see three Fatui agents with their weapons at the ready, "Hey there kids, let's just make this easy for all of us, hand over your visions and no one gets hurt."

The two reach for their backs to summon their weapon, but there was nothing. They had left their weapons back Bourou Village.

"Come on, we don't bite." The leader amongst them snickered, Chongyun extends out a defensive arm across Hu Tao as they slowly stepped back.

"You can run?" Hu Tao asks.

"No not really..?"

Hu Tao hastily looks back to the Fatui as they began to back up, "Well too bad, RUN!" Hu Tao screams and Chongyun tosses his cane at the Fatui.Hu Tao grabs Chongyun by the hand but the boy quickly overtakes her, dragging her as fast as his injured legs could.

"Get them!"

The duo continued running, narrowly dodging bullets that flew by, "They want our visions!" Hu Tao says between breaths

"Ya think?! We gotta fight back." Chongyun attempts to turn around but Hu Tao pulls him back around, "No! You'll die if you even try that!"

Chongyun scoffs and continues to run, "Is it too late to get that discount?"

"Of all times- of all times, you choose to joke around now?!"

Chongyun gasps as a pyro bullet grazes his cheek and he stumbles onto his bad leg. He could feel the pain shoot up his injured leg and it wasn't long before he tripped and fell onto the soil.

"Chongyun!"

An agent fired another shot and Hu Tao stumbled backwards. Chongyun groaned and struggled to get up.

"Get the girl, this kid is mine." The leader presses the end of his gun against Chongyun's chest and reaches down for his belt to grab his vision.

Chongyun struggles and kicks the Fatui in the face, "Oh that's it you little brat."

Chongyun hears the sound of the Fatui clocking his gun and jumps, gracefully leaping off the ground with his arms supporting him as he knocked the Fatui over.

The leader scrambles for his gun and fires quickly, Chongyun narrowly dodging it's bullet as it flies past and right in Hu Tao's direction.

The three struggling screech, "Oi, watch it boss!"

Chongyun grabs the gun, desperately trying to yank it from the Fatui's grip but the leader knocks him back down, "I got you now," The Fatui aims his gun once again, this time right at Hu Tao's head.

"NO-" Chongyun swiftly kicks the Agent's feet and knocks him over and grabs the gun, pointing it back immediately.

"W-Wait, please I-" Chongyun feels the anger boiling again, his hands itched as they hovered over the trigger.

"Please- spare me! We were only joking."

Chongyun waits, hands trembling as he held the weapon in his hand, he was hesitant. There's no way he'd take his life, "I doubt that."

"P-Please!"

The man under was reduced to a sobbing mess, yet Chongyun wasn't buying any of his crocodile tears. He needed to pull the trigger and he needed to do it now.

Meanwhile Hu Tao was struggling. She was smaller in size, and weaker to fighting compared to the former. It wasn't long before the others had grabbed her by the hair to hold her high in the air. Hu Tao screamed at the pain, kicking as hard as she could at the other Fatui agent trying to find her vision.

They were all silenced by the sound of a single gunshot. The two Fatui turn to see their leader laying lifeless and an angry Chongyun pointing a gun at them, "Drop her!"

The two raise their hands and drop Hu Tao to the ground. The girl cries out in pain as she lands on her injured arm, "Hey now, we're all friends here. There's no need for that."

"Step away from her." Chongyun says coldly, gesturing his head for Hu Tao to move out of the way, "Get the others!"

Hu Tao stumbles away, clutching her arm as she makes the run back down for the resistance, "Hey kid, just drop the gun and we can talk this out."

Chongyun's attention is back on the Agents, one cheekily laughing as he barters with Chongyun and the other nowhere to be seen, "We don't have to kill each other as long as you just hand your vision over..."

The agents voice lowers and Chongyun narrows his eyes, keeping a tight grip on the gun, his finger hovering above the trigger. The gun was shaking, he was shaking. Chongyun pulls on the trigger when everything goes to black.

---

"LUMINE! LUMINE WAIT!" Hu Tao screams just as the Traveler and Paimon step off the bridge from the shrine.

The Traveller seemed to be fuming and not in the right mind to be disturbed at the moment. Yet the moment they laid their eyes on Hu Tao’s frantic face, their previously angry expression was replaced with worry.

Hu Tao? Panicking? Now that’s a first, "Hu Tao? What's wrong, are you alri-"

"Now's not the time! Some Fatui jumped us and Chongyun’s still busy fighting them." Hu Tao runs down towards the training area and grabs both hers and Chongyun's weapons.

Lumine now caught by surprise, "Fatui?!" The companions look at each other, the colours now drained from their face, "Again?!"

"Yes, Fatui! We gotta help him, hurry!” Hu Tao practically pulls on Lumine’s arm.

”I- Paimon, go check on Teppei. I’ll go help her.”

Their little companion nods affirmatively, “Be safe, guys.”

“This way, come on!” Hu Tao runs ahead, towards the same arch and up the mountain

“Hu Tao- wait, slow down!” Lumine was lagging behind, skidding against the ground as they struggle to turn the corner.

Eyes were glued on the Director. Hu Tao was clearly in so much pain and struggling to carry the heavy claymore, yet she continued running up.

Ignoring the panting Traveller, Hu Tao wasted no time sprinting back to where she last left Chongyun the moment she reached the hill top. She could care less about waiting and the aching pain in her arm when her eyes were stinging like hell

”CHONGYUN!” Hu Tao screeches and drops both weapons. By the tree laid 3 unmoving, lifeless bodies and amongst them was Chongyun.

”Wait, Hu Tao- oh my archons!” Lumine gasps at the bloody sight.

There was the leader with blood staining the ground, and a bullet wound through the chest, the other's face completely blown off. It was a grim sight to see and Hu Tao turned her nose up at the smell of death, which was definitely unusual seeing how she deals with dead bodies all the time.

Hu Tao felt queasy, never in her life had she felt like this witnessing death. Yet the blood pouring and Chongyun's limp body lying on the ground made her sick to the stomach.

Hu Tao falls to her knees and sits motionless as Lumine checks the bodies, "No..."

"Is this all the fatui?" Lumine asks, kicking the body of the fatui leader unfazed.

Hu Tao shakes her head no, "One escaped..."

Lumine casts a worried glance at the girl and continues making their rounds, finally coming to Chongyun's side. They place their two fingers on Chongyun’s neck, feeling his abnormally high temperature, “He’s alive! But he’s burning up more than usual, we need to get him cooled down, pronto!”

“LUMINE- LUMINE!” Another group of people cry out the Traveller’s name.

Hu Tao sees Lumine’s head shoot up as they wrap one of Chongyun's arm around their shoulder and gesturing for her to do the same, "Kokomi?!"

The trio consisting of the former, Paimon and Gorou all come to a stand still, "Oh my goodness, Chongyun!" Kokomi brings her hands to her mouth in her shock, immediately summoning her bake-kurage to help speed up the healing process.

"He's still alive, just passed out. How's Teppei?!"

Paimon is shoved forward by an unknown hand she looks back at Gorou and the two other resistance soldiers, irritated, "Bwah! Why Paimon?!"

Paimon looks back to her parter who was waiting with eager eyes, "I- I'm sorry...Traveller but..."

"We don't...think he's going to make it." Kokomi interjects with a mournful tone, "I'm sorry Traveller."

Lumine's grip on Chongyun's arm tightens and the boy groggily wakes up, "H-Huh...wha?"

"Chongyun! Are you alright?!" The two holding him upright yelled in unison.

"I-...hot...feel so hot..." The boy mumbles, bringing his hand to his head from around Lumine while still keeping his hold around Hu Tao.

The boy looks at the two disoriented, "Who...what?"

"Chongyun, do you know where you are?" Lumine asks.

"No...who are...you- argh!" Chongyun's weak leg buckles and he grunts at the pain.

Kokomi brings her healing hand up to his head and checks for bumps, "I...don't feel anything significant. I doubt he has amnesia."

"Chongyun! Don't you remember me?" Hu Tao nudges at the boy playfully and gives him a hopeful smile, "You know, your 'best friend'?"

Chongyun looks down with a quizzed look, shaking his head disappointingly, "I-I'm sorry I just..."

"Oh come on stop playing around! I know you're angry at me but..." Hu Tao sighs, frustrated, "Come on, it's me? Hu Tao? Walnut? The stupid annoying girl you keep complaining about to Xingqiu?"

Chongyun, still confused, shakes his head again.

"Hu Tao," Kokomi whispers and the girl in question looks towards her. Kokomi gestures her hand down and the Traveller's gaze wanders down towards Chongyun's belt with Hu Tao copying. They spot the hilt where his vision should be, with only the omamori remaining.

Anyone that has had their vision taken will lose their ambition. They lose a part of themselves. Some forget who they are, some forget people important to them.

Hu Tao feels a wave of emotions hit her at once. Her grip weakened, yet Chongyun keeps a firm hand on her back to keep her from dropping to the ground, "Uh...are you ok?" The girl doesn't answer.

Lumine however, was fuming. Their blood boiled and their composure was all but lost and tossed into the wind, "Where's the Fatui's main base of operations."

"We..." Kokomi looks at Gorou but gives in immediately to the Traveller's demand the moment she saw their sharp gaze, "We can deduce that their factory that are supplying these delusions are somewhere by the cliffs near the ocean, southwest of Yashiori island, but it's far too dangerous to go alo-"

"I'll take care of it, come on Paimon." Lumine snaps, stomping off.

"Wait- Lumine you can't go alone!" Hu Tao cries out.

"Then come along for the ride, why don't you?" Lumine snarks.

"Traveller...wait just relax firs- "Shut up, Paimon!"

"Shit- come on, Chongyun." Hu Tao tosses Chongyun's arm into a secure grip and prepares to walk off

"Oh no- not you two! You guys need to stay here where it's safe- "Your Excellency! Your Excellency! A fatui soldier was spotted fleeing towards the north side of the island!"

Kokomi, now with her back turned, answers the soldier, "Hmm, they must have Chongyun's vision?"

Hu Tao takes the opportunity to slip away, grabbing both weapons and handing the claymore to the boy, "There's still more, Your Excellency. We believe there's a Tenryou Commission officer on the island."

Kokomi strokes her chin, "Then we're going to have to act fast. Hu Tao, can you take Ch-" Kokomi turns to see an empty space and the two teens far in the distance.

"Should we-" A soldier steps forward but stopped by Kokomi's hand, "No, let them be."

"But Your Excellency," Gorou speaks, "Their associated with us now, we can't just let them go."

Kokomi turns away and heads back down for the village with the others following in pursuit, "And we can't change their minds. We have bigger matters at hand. If we stop this war, the better we will be able to help them."

"But-"

"This is unfortunately not a matter for further discussion, General Gorou. Our priority is finding out what the Fatui and Tenryou soldier want."

The others gulp down, nodding with a heavy heart.

---

On the far side of Watatsumi Island, a lone Fatui Agent spent hours in hiding, making sure no one else was there to spot him with his one of a kind find.

It’s only now he felt safe to emerge from his cave and cry a sigh of relief.

The Agent carefully digs into his pocket and pulls out a cryo vision flickering in his hand, "Sweet! A Liyuen Cryo Vision! The amount of mora I could earn if I sell it off to the Tenryou Commission! And I wouldn't have to split with those other two morons."

The agent ravels at his new treasure, greedily licking his lips at the amount of mora he could earn, like treasure hoarders with their new stolen cargo, "Hah I could sell it for a million- no maybe 2 or even 5 million mora! Then I’d never have to go ba- AGH!”

The agent is immediately knocked to the ground with one strong punch to the head before he could finish his sentence, “Argh- screw you!”

The figure picks the vision from the ground and realisation dawns upon them, "Huh- who knew even the Fatui would be as mora hungry as the the nobushi."

The unknown figure examines the unfamiliar design, tracing it’s uniquely diamond shaped casing.

The Fatui scowls and crawls away in a pathetic attempt to escape, only to be knocked out immediately.

The figure scoffs and looks at the vision flicker again before dimming once again. They clutch it tight in their hands, questioning what their next move should be. Giving the vision a quick toss in the air, they look down at the Sangonomiya Shrine and sigh.

The agent on the ground groans, "Huh, you're still awake?"

The Fatui growls, weakly outstretching their hand, "Y-You...you're a Tenryou-"

"Shh, no one has to know, now do they?" The figure smirks and sends another punch flying.

"Man alive, what am I doing." Heizou sighs and shoves the vision in his pocket, "I can't believe I'm doing this."

The man was hesitant, Heizou knew that the Resistance wouldn't trust him. Plotting his next move could be difficult. He could bring this back for the Vision Hunt Decree, or he could keep it and wait out the Decree, that way he will have minimised his involvement.

There was a slight breeze that tussles with his hair carrying the scent of maple leaves. Heizou inhales the scent and he feels a tug in his chest, like as if his intuition is telling him what to do, "Agh- I can't believe I'm doing this."

Chapter Text

The teen breathed heavily, the pungent air penetrated his nose in electrical waves. The smell of maple leaves and cherry blossoms wafted the air, along with scent of burnt, electrified grass. Where was that heavenly aroma of silk flowers and the ocean breeze that he seemed to yearn for? Why wasn't atop of a mountain meditating or training like he should be?

This new island- this place, it carried so much sadness within its shores. Lightning struck wherever it could as goosebumps were sent shivering, making the hair on his skin stand. They definitely weren't in Liyue. Recalling however, was too much exercise for the boy. He felt weak and tired, his head was pounding.

Chongyun was pulled along against his will. His destination? He was unsure. The blunet desperately wanted to let go of whoever was dragging him along. The stranger was uncharacteristically quiet, how he knew was a different set of questions all together. But the broken look on her face and her iron grip around his wrist made him recoil his questions.

Was it remorse that painted her expression? Her twisted, broken smile she'd attempt to give him every time they made eye contact only made him feel worse. His chest was beating rapidly against his will and he could not figure out why it made his heart ache to see her face so distraught. Chongyun felt like he knew her, but even then, her guilt-ridden face fills him with a sense of unfamiliarity, uneasiness and dread. No matter how hard she tried to play it off as her seemingly goofing off, Chongyun felt like he knew better.

Chongyun had so many questions, why were they following this blonde traveler? Who was the flying fairy? Where the hell were they going? Why...did it hurt to see her like that?

The boat ride over the waters gave him the opportunity to ask the questions he so desperately needed answering to. But seeing a single tear drop trickle down the brunette girl's deadpanned face make him retract and hide within himself.

Now here he was, continuously pulled along the unknown land to an unknown destination until they finally, finally came to a stop.

"Traveler- I think we've gone far enough! L-Let's just rest first and straighten everything out, ok?" The little white-haired fairy spoke.

The blonde didn't reply, instead they walked further down to an abandoned blue tent nearby with some logs scattered around a campfire, "Rest here, I'll fetch us some food."

Chongyun hadn't notice the aching pain in his leg until they came to a stop, but the brunette seemed to have noticed before he did because she began to wrap her arm around his back and place his arm over her shoulder, just like she did when he woke up. The exorcist couldn't help but feel the warmth bubbling in his chest as her fingers interlock with his.

The brunette carried Chongyun over and sat him down on the log. Chongyun hisses at the sudden jolt of pain in his leg when he finally sat down, "Are you alright?"

The little fairy spoke, concerned eyes wandered over his battered body, "I-I'm fine...floating...fairy?"

Paimon sighs, folding her arms but nothing more than just slightly irritated at the label, "I'm Paimon, not floating fairy," The tiny girl exclaims, mumbling to herself softly after, "At least you didn't call Paimon a child or food." Her eyes narrow at the blonde struggling to pick a fruit up high.

"Sorry, Paimon."

"No- don't be sorry! Agh, look at you! Making Paimon feel bad." Paimon stomps her foot in the air, mumbling the last sentence.

Chongyun's eyes lingers over to the stranger that was glued to his side the whole journey over the archipelago. Her floral red eyes fixated on his figure and clouded with sadness. There was an  uneasiness in his stomach that just wouldn't leave as she shifted her gaze away from, him only confused him even more.

"Uhm..sorry. I uh- should probably introduce myself-"

"There's no need to do that- ugh, do you seriously not remember anything, Chongyun?!" Paimon was ready to throw something in her frustration.

"Don't force it, Paimon. You already know how it is," Lumine returns with a handful of fruits and meat, "Let's just- eat first."

Chongyun looks at the purple fruit carefully, recognising it to hail from the land of Inazuma- wait what the fuck, Inazuma?!

"Paimon knows," The girl sighs looking at Chongyun longingly, "Paimon's just upset that it's one of our friends- AHHH!" Paimon barely catches and is almost pulled down by the sheer weight of a huge lavender melon Lumine tosses at her.

"Where...did you get these fruits? Were they imported."

Lumine sets up a pot and places the meat inside it and over the fire while munching down on a lavender melon of their own. They swallow quickly and pause for a moment before replying, "Just— from that tree over there."

"I...are we..."

Lumine nods, taking another bite while adding in some of the seasoning into the pot of meat, "Yeap, Inazuma. Sorry to have dragged you along so suddenly." Lumine takes a glance at Hu Tao, but the girl did not make eye contact. Her eyes glued on her lap and her fingers playing around with her hair.

"I should uh, reintroduce myself. I'm Lumine, a Traveler. And that flying pet is Paimon but she probably already told you that." Lumine smiles small while Paimon chokes on her melon.

"Paimon is not a pet!" The angry girl throws her melon at the blonde.

Chongyun lets out a nervous laugh, his eyes now drifting to the quiet girl sitting on her own log, "And uh..."

"That's one of your friends," Lumine smiles, "You uh...actually came here to get her, her nam- "The names Hu Tao, pleasure to re-make your acquaintance."

Hu Tao jumps onto her feet and joyfully extends a hand out to the blue haired boy. Chongyun quickly analyses her face before returning the hand shake, "Uh- Chongyun."

The girl had a wide cheeky smile on her face, and yet it seemed so off putting to the exorcist. But the moment he took her hand in his for a firm shake, Chongyun felt like his brain was on fire, like as if there was a spark and a flash of a long forgotten memory.

"I already know your name, silly!" The girl quickly pulls her hand away and drags her fingers over her palm, not lingering longer than she should before sitting back down.

"R-Right, mind explaining why you suddenly dragged me all the way here? And why are we in Inazuma?" Chongyun's gaze returned back to Lumine, now plating the meat on some clean leaves.

"Well I'm here to try and find my sibling. She was here for a business deal but uh...not everything went exactly to plan now did it?" Hu Tao shrugs at Lumine's comment, taking the leaf and ready to scarf down her meal.

"What about me?"

"You came to get her, and again, also did not go according to plan," Chongyun mumbles a silent no thank you as Lumine offers him the steaming cooked steak, "Ah sorry, forgot about that."

Lumine tosses Chongyun a fruit and he gives them a thankful nod, "So...why did we follow you if we need to go back to Liyue?"

"You're uh...kinda stuck in here? There's no easy way out of here. And another thing..." Lumine looks down to Chongyun's side, only seeing his omamori hanging with the tassel, "We need to get your vision back."

Hu Tao inhales deeply, shoving more food in her mouth to prevent whatever that painful feeling was, inside. It stung her like a bee.

"But hey, you seem to not be affected as badly as some of the others, so thats a plus."

"I have a vision?!"

Hu Tao stands up immediately, leaving her food on the log and stretches, "Ah that was a nice meal, I'm gonna go walk it off."

"Hu Tao wait," Lumine shouts and groans as the girl turns on her heel and walks off almost immediately, "Ugh, Paimon stay with Chongyun."

"Did I...do something wrong?" Chongyun looks to Paimon for some sort of reassurance, but the tiny girl shrugs and looks ahead, watching the pair disappear just over the hill.

Hu Tao was ready to run off. Her blood was pumping, her head was throbbing, feeling a vein just ready to pop. Hu Tao desperately wanted to claw at something and rip it apart, piece by piece.

"Hu Tao stop!" Lumine ran, curving around and stretching their arms out.

"Oh! Traveler, how nice of you to join me!" Hu Tao grins and picks up the pace, circling and walking past Lumine.

"Hu Tao, you can talk to me, you know?"

Hu Tao hums, both hands linked behind her back as she twists around with the same smile still painted on her face, "Talk about what?"

Lumine sighs and trails behind, their soft gaze fixated on Hu Tao as she trots on.

The two walked in tensed silence, all the way back down to the beach front as they looked over towards Watatsumi Island.

"Hu Tao," The girl hums again to acknowledge the Traveler, "Why did you follow us?"

"If I recall correctly, you invited me to tag along, dear Lumine."

There was a pause and Lumine groaned at the memory, "I- was...upset, ok? You weren't suppose to come."

"Oh, so you don't want us here?" The girl teases.

Lumine sighs and runs their hand through their hair before dropping it down to their side."You know that's not what I mean!"

The wind howls by, carrying fallen leaves in its wake as it dances across the water, carried to only Celestia knows where.

"I didn't want you both to get hurt any further. You should have stayed there and help look for his vision."

Hu Tao tucks her hands under her arms, "Uhm...whoops?" She flashes a nervous grin and Lumine grumbles.

"Whatever, you panicked and now we're here. I-...I'm sorry, ok? I appreciate the thought."

The two remained quiet, watching the tides come and go, just barely reaching the tip of their shoes before sweeping away what little of the shore there is into its waters.

"You know, you're lucky all that Chongyun lost was his memories," A sad smile is carved on their face, "Remember when I told you to leave? Because of how dangerous it was here?"

Hu Tao snickered, "Do you wish to say 'I told you so'?" Hu Tao let out another weak laugh.

"No- it's....when we left Ritou and met with Ayaka, we learnt about the Vision Hunt Decree and...met all the people affected by it."

Hu Tao lifts her head to look at the melancholic Traveler, "They forget about the important people in their lives, just like Chongyun," Hu Tao's breath hitches and Lumine notices but they continue on, "But they also lose a part of themselves, they even forget who they are. That's why I said it was dangerous. That was why I wanted you to leave."

Lumine's sad golden eyes glistened, "I didn't want to lose you too."

Hu Tao mouths an 'oh' and shifts her gaze back down. Fragments of broken memories begin flooding back in little pieces. The time back at the Vision Ceremony, she remembered the emptiness, just before it all faded to black. The guilt was only getting worse, and the pain in her eyes was so great. She wasn't ready to break just yet, so she sucks it up, refusing to let allow herself the satisfaction of crying her heart out.

"I'm not blaming you, in fact, I wish I told you sooner."

Hu Tao remained quiet, and Lumine didn't mind. Allowing the girl to sit in silence with her thoughts, "Tomorrow we'll be heading towards the factory, so rest well."

The Traveler pats the girl and walks back to camp. The tired Traveler looks down by the beach one last time to see Hu Tao curled within herself. Lumine's fingers curled into a fist, the bubbling anger that they buried deep inside for the moment came back stronger than ever. Their brows furrowed and their shoulders stiff, Lumine was ready to take down the fatui.

But for now, they needed to keep all those feelings hidden. They needed to be strong, strong for the rest of the team. There was this horrible feeling still pooling deep within, bitterly regretting every moment since they've stepped into Inazuma for not doing enough. Squeezing their eyes shut as tears begin to seep out, they march back to camp, hoping to forget this sharp pain in their chest.

Back at the beach, Hu Tao lets out a sigh as the wind tussles her hair. Looking over her shoulder one last time to make sure the Traveler was gone, finally allowing herself curl into herself with her knees tucked under her chest. She was finally ready to allow herself to cry, but she had no tears left to shed. Just this aching feeling of emptiness in her heart, as she takes one more glance at Watatsumi Island.

---

"You two will stay out here and guard the entrance. If anyone tries to escape, catch them. I'll be back in an hour, ok?"

"I can go with you, you know? What if you need backup?" Hu Tao chirps.

Lumine shakes their head, "No I need you both here, and for you to look after him." Lumine gestures to Chongyun

Hu Tao hums, tapping her foot before exclaiming out loud, "But what if you get hurt?"

"I'll be fine."

"What if there's a lot of them?"

"I've dealt with such before."

"Are you sure?"

"Hu Tao-"

"What about a coffin? Take up my offer now, buy a coffin now and get your next funeral 25% off!" Hu Tao winks at Paimon and the floating girl's face distorts into that of disgust.

"Oh NO! Paimon is not dying! Traveler, maybe you should bring her so that you don't die! Paimon doesn't want you to die- "Enough, Paimon. No ones dying."

Hu Tao chuckles weakly, "Alright, you win! We'll wait out here."

Lumine lets out a deep breath and rubs their temple, "Thank you."

"Why...do you wanna go alone? I have some...uhm...fighting experience." Chongyun steps forward with a meek voice.

"I-...well uh," Lumine's eyes dart around before landing back on Chongyun, "It's just something I need to do alone, ok? Just stay here where it's safe."

Chongyun nods and the two disappear into the factory, "Bye bye! Don't miss me too much!" Hu Tao yells and waves into the darkness followed by the echoed groaning noises from Paimon.

"We won't!" Paimon yells before the doors slam shut.

The teens stare at the door for a moment, unwilling to break the extremely awkward silence.

"So- "Yes, Chonggers?"

Chongyun feels the sudden urge to slap her.

"My name is Chongyun, Miss Hu."

"Oh relax, just call me Hu or Tao or Hu Tao or Tao Tao or Hu put me in this coffin!" Hu Tao grins, immediately turning into a frown just seeing Chongyun's befuddled face, "No, not funny?"

"Should...I laugh?"

"Sevens no! Chongyun, laughing? Because of Hu Tao?"

Chongyun wraps his arms around himself and mumbles a sorry.

"Argh- no that's not what I meant! Aiya...you're always taking things seriously."

Chongyun slumps down on a nearby tree, "I'm sorry I can't remember."

Hu Tao bites her lower lip and sits down in front of the boy, "Oh I wouldn't worry too much. We'll get your vision back soon!"

The two sit in silence again, a more peaceful silence. Hu tao was rocking back and forth while Chongyun was lost in thought.

"What...was I like? Was I any different with a vision?"

"I'd say no, just more cranky towards me." Hu Tao chuckles.

"Cranky? But you're my friend, why would I be cranky?"

Hu Tao's heart skips a beat at his acknowledgement of their friendship, " I-...I don't know, you tell me, Cloud? Why were you so cranky?"

"I...don't know, maybe you irritated me?"

"Ah yes, I probably do, but you love me anyway." Hu Tao winks, unknowing of how much Chongyun is starting to burn up.

"What?!"

"As your bestie, you just love being around me!"

"B-Bestie?"

"Of course, you love being around me so much you made me your official bestie."

Chongyun begins raking his fingers into his hair, extremely red and burning up rapidly, "L-Lo...huh?!"o

Hu Tao begins to catch on, continuing on with her bit, "Oh yes, Chongyun. You're very much in love with me, you refused to let me leave Liyue to come here. You were all like 'Noooo, it's too dangerous' or 'Don't leave me behind nooooo, I'll miss you so much!' Oh you were sooo clingy."

Chongyun's cheeks glow a light pink as Hu Tao continues on, "You mostly hangout with me, carrying me when I'm tired, always stalking me when I leave the harbor to go pick herbs with Qiqi-"

"Ok ok stop! I've heard enough!"

Too easy.

Hu Tao chuckles, then giggles, then erupts into laughter, finally collapsing onto the ground holding her stomach as she cackles like a mad man.

"Wh- what's so funny?"

"I- AHAHAha...oh Archons help me. Oh my stomach," Hu Tao wipes away a tear and pushes herself back to sit upright, "Cloud, I was just...AHAHAH" Hu Tao stares at Chongyun for just a moment before breaking out laughing again.

"What?! I don't get it!"

"I was just kidding, Cloud."

"Huh?"

Hu Tao begins to relax, letting out a few more laughs, "I was teasing, I didn't actually mean any of that."

Chongyun tilts his head, "But you're not lying."

"I am- wait what d'ya mean?"

"I feel like you're not lying."

Hu Tao slows her breath down, "I...Cloud, most of the things I said were just...uhm...made up."

Chongyun shrugs, "I...nevermind then. Maybe I'm just being delusional."

Hu Tao stares for a while, rendered speechless. She had no idea what he meant at all and she's sure he doesn't either, "Aiya, sometimes I miss your stupid comebacks, dumb exorcist." Hu Tao mumbles the last part while hiding her mouth behind her arm, unaware of the blush slowly creeping.

The two went back to silence, just sitting alone with their thoughts to pass the hour until the Traveler returns. While Chongyun tries to wrangle with his apparent loss of memory, Hu Tao...

Hu Tao...

She was guilt-ridden, for the whole day she couldn't get rid of this god awful feeling, yet just chatting with Chongyun somehow makes her forget the horrible situation they were in. Despite how different he was, he was still the same. He's still witty, albeit less snappy towards her. He's still the same old naive little Chongyun, and Hu Tao just loved that about him.

Loved...

Just one glance at the boy was all it took for her to hide her reddened cheeks, as old feeling began to resurface. How she tried so desperately to ignore whatever this bubbling feeling was, how it flutters and tickers her every time they were just near each other. If only she could remember when it first started.

"Stupid..."

"Huh?"

"You're...st-..stupid—sorry I...you said you missed my comebacks I just...maybe I'm not so good at pretending to be the Chongyun you know. Yo-You're not stupid..."

Hu Tao smile grows as she cups her ear and leans forward, "What was that you just said?"

"You're not stupid?"

"Say it again!"

"You're not stupid."

"Again!"

"You're not stupid."

"Again!"

"You're...not stupid?"

"Again!"

"You're stupid."

"Hey! That's mean!" Hu Tao puffs a cheek and crosses her arms.

"Well you're kind of being stupid now- "Am not!"

Chongyun lets out a small laugh, "I...see why you enjoy bantering with me now. What else do we do for fun?"

Hu Tao's smile widens even further that now she's practically grinning from ear to ear, "You...like having fun with me?"

"Yeah, you seem fun. Maybe just a little crazy, but I guess your kind of fun."

Hu Tao now with both hands on her hips, gives Chongyun a firm nod, "Yes yes keep praising me! With every praise you give me, I'll tell you another story about you and I."

"Wha- so I need to buy stories off of you now?"

Hu Tao giggles, "Yes."

Chongyun groans and rubs his temple, "I see why I get cranky with you now," He mumbles under his breath.

"So, can we shake on it?" Hu Tao stretches out her hand.

Chongyun reluctantly takes her hand gives it one firm shake, "Fine."

"It's a deal then, Cloud!"

---

It's been an hour, and there was still no sign of the Traveler or their companion. Each passing minute only gives the already anxiety-riddled exorcist more reason to panic.

"We should go and check on them!" Chongyun paces back and forth in front of the door.

"Oh relax, that's Liyue's saviour in there. If anyone can handle a few Fatui, it's them." Hu Tao was still sat on the ground, new weaving a few flowers together out of sheer boredom.

"But they said they'd be back in an hour."

Hu Tao blows a raspberry, "It's just been a few minutes, you need to relax."

"But what if their hurt, or trapped, or...or- "Oi, Cloud! Their fine. Seriously, were you this anxious when I left?" Hu Tao grabs the panicked boy by the shoulders and lets out a laugh.

Chongyun looks at her confused once again and she sighs, "Riiiiight, you don't remember," Hu Tao releases Chongyun and taps her foot rapidly while staring at the factory door.

"Hmm, I guess it has been a while..."

"That's what I just said!"

"We should go in, what if their trapped, or hurt." Hu Tao snickers as she mocks the blunet and opens the door, slowly creeping into the darkness that was the hideout.

"I just said that!" Chongyun lets out a frustrated groan and follows the girl closely behind. For some reason, Chongyun has the very strong urge to submerge her underwater.

The teens make their way in, the last stream of sunlight disappearing the moment the front doors slammed shut. The air reeked of death, sending shivers down Chongyun's spine.

On the ground, there was a hint of purple fog, empty crates stacked upon each other, and what they could barely make out to be freshly dead bodies in the distance.

"H-Hu Tao, is that...?" Chongyun looks towards the unmoving silhouettes in the distance.

"Huh? Don't tell me you're scared of ghosts, Cloud." Hu Tao grins and turns to look at Chongyun.

"No I'm serious, look over there!" Chongyun points with a shaky hand.

"Lil exorcist is scared of ghosties~"

"Hu Tao...please."

Hu Tao smile falters as she follows his finger and looks into the room right next to them. Inside sat the lifeless body of a Fatui skirmisher. Her eyes grow dark as her stomach churns.

Blood was spilling from his mouth, his head was caved in and his clothes were covered in blood. It was gruesome, whoever killed him really had it out for him.

Hu Tao sighs and she steps forward to the front of the doorway, standing in silence as she claps her to hands together and bows her head.

Chongyun watches as Hu Tao mumbles a prayer under her breath. Meanwhile, Hu Tao was trembling. She could feel those cold eyes staring right back at her as she said her prayers. She struggled to keep her hands clasped and felt the food from yesterday in her mouth. She quickly turned away after finishing her prayer.

There it was again, that sickly feeling Hu Tao felt just the day before. She felt uneasy just looking around at how much death permeated through the air. Her heart stops as she thinks back again to Chongyun's almost lifeless body-

No, she can't think about that now.

"What...uhm...were you doing?"

"I'm the Director of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor. It's my job to care for the dead but unfortunately, we don't have time for a big ceremony so I just said a few prayers for him and the others..." Hu Tao shivered, "If theres others."

The girl kept pressing forward, with every step she took, the more unsure she felt, and somehow, her friend behind was able to see her discomfort. Chongyun could see how bothered she still was, for someone that works extremely close to death, she seemed very turned off by it. He decided not to question though, allowing Hu Tao to continue on forward.

The two winded around, following the trail of littered bodies and fog down the halls. With every turn, there seemed to be just more and more Fatui laying lifeless, making the two extremely nauseated. Hu Tao especially was beginning to feel dizzy, her body swaying side to side and her head bopping every now and again.

Chongyun didn't like it, he felt awful seeing her in such a state. Not knowing what came over him, he grabs her arm and pulls her closer to him. Now leading the two down the maze of corridors, his hand only tightening its grip as if scared to let her go. Chongyun didn't know what prompted him to pull her so close, maybe he was just worried or it was instinct. Whatever it was, he's just happy Hu Tao didn't seem to mind or make any funny comments.

The deeper they went, the stronger the fog and the weaker they felt. Passing body after body, seemingly slashed across by a blood raged serial killer. But there was no one else inside apart from the Traveler, Paimon and whatever nasty Fatui that were left alive.

In the distance, the two could begin to hear someone arguing. The closer they drew, the clearer the voices became.

"DON'T YOU DARE MOCK TEPPEI!"

The two look up to the room up ahead, the floor was covered in now dense purple fog and their friends standing in the middle of it all. Lumine had their sword in hand, coated in blood.

"Hey! Calm down!" Paimon screams as Lumine prepares to charge.

The fog then begins to change, circling around the Traveler the moment they took the first step forward. Lumine folds and grabs their head as they gasp out in pain. Their upper body falls forward as they clutch their chest, weakly raising their sword with their other arm, pointing at the unknown figure standing in front of them.

The figure cackles, tipping their hat as they begin to maniacally laugh, "That's it, just like that! Embrace the anger...EMBRACE IT!"

"LUMINE- aRGH!" Hu Tao screams before feeling the effects of the fog begin to affect her, leaning her entire body weight onto Chongyun.

"The wrath of the gods fills this factory, and it feeds on your anger!" The figure laughs once again.

Chongyun grits his teeth and goes to grab his claymore when his fingers grazes something attached to his hilt. He pulls out a small pink bag with a symbol on it and it was distinctly Inazuman, "What-"

Chongyun had no time to gloss over it though as Lumine's sword falls to the ground and they fall into their knees. Their vision was going haywire as everything fades in and out rapidly.

Paimon rushes over and shakes the Traveler as the figure begins to approach them menacingly, "Ah, what's happening?! Get up!"

"Lumine! Agh- Hu Tao?!" Chongyun frantically looks around the room.

Chongyun was stuck, Hu Tao was at the brink of collapsing and the strongest member of their team was down, leaving him and Paimon alone. He froze in place and the fear began to kick in as he and the purple figure make eye contact.

Chongyun too began to sway, the dizzying effects of the fog was too potent. He fell onto his knees, as his grip on Hu Tao loosened and the unconscious girl slid onto the floor.

With barely any strength left, Chongyun leaps forward and swings his claymore. However, he was fumbling, unable to keep a strong grip on his sword as not only the fog, but his constitution was beginning to affect him greatly. He was heating up way to quick as he attempted to swing his sword again.

"You're pathetic, thinking you can win a battle against a Fatui Harbinger without a vision." The Harbinger summons a bolt of lighting and strikes the poor boy.

Chongyun falls on his knees, with his hands still wrapped around his claymore for stability. Unwilling to let the Harbinger, he swings again, this time with his anger channeling his energy into his swing only for him too succumbs to the fog and collapse, unaware that the omamori in his hand had begun to glow.

"So Morax, you decide to pawn of your precious souvenir from your dear friend to some mortal? I'm hurt." Yae Miko says disappointed as she makes her way forward towards the Fatui Harbinger.

"Miko..."

"I really didn't think you'd return after what you did, Balladeer. Or should I refer to you as Kunikuzushi." The sly fox stops, towering over the puppet standing before her.

"That's Balladeer to you."

"Why, what's wrong? Did the guilt finally eat you up completely?"

"Stop playing games, fox."

Yae Miko scoffs and looks down at the four figures behind her, "You ought to treat your guests better too. You're just like your mother."

"She's not my mother, and I'm nothing like her!" Scaramouche says behind seething teeth.

"Then why return to Inazuma and cause pain to some random Travelers, hm? I'd assume you have better things to do for the Fatui than just fooling around here?"

"You have something that belongs to me, and the only way to lure you here is through them."

Yae Miko looks down at the blonde on the floor next to the sobbing Paimon. She sighs, "Hmph, how crude."

"I'm not playing around, if not the Fatui will continue to poison your precious Inazumans with delusions of grandeur so that they can finally know what it feels like to wield the power of the gods!" The puppet cackles, feeling the adrenaline of the moment get to him like there was artificial blood was pumping through his veins, "I'll continue to feed them this false sense of security, allowing them to play allogene before they all succumb to it."

Yae Miko's eyes narrow as the puppet continues his monologue, "Soon enough, I'll poison the whole of Inazuma. Then the whole of Teyvat, until you give me what I want."

Yae Miko bends down and places two fingers against the neck of the unconscious Traveler, "What is it that you want, Kunikuzushi."

"Don't play dumb, you know what I want. So you better cough it up, unless you're willing to bid your precious Inazuma farewell."

"Why choose to strike now then, hm? What is the Fatui planning- "Enough! I'm losing patience."

Scaramouche's fingers with tingling, like as if his veins were drawing in electro energy and channeling it right to his fingertips as he aims directly at the outlanders on the floor. He was itching to strike, "I will kill them, I swear I'll kill them," Scaramouche looks Yae Miko dead in the eye, "If you don't give me what I want, I'll do it! I know your plan, I know you need the outlander to save your pathetic country." He spat.

Yae Miko refused to flinch as the Harbinger's eye twitches in frustration, "If you don't give it to me in the next 10 seconds, I'll do it. Do you dare to gamble such a possibility with me?"

Yae Miko gives Scaramouche a cold glare, waving her hand and summoning a singular chess piece in her hand, "Fine then, let's make a deal."
