The Ignorance of Rulers

Summary:

Snapshots of council meetings

Notes:

Welp, this is much less polished than I wanted it to be. Also much of it was written on my phone. (Those may be connected, no comment)

Anyway:
Happy Birthday B!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The advisors fidgeted nervously as they considered how to attempt to dissuade their liege.  One of them spoke up:

"My Lord… are you sure this is the correct course of action?  Handling the succession based upon bringing you an object, regardless of its ultimate value, would be… unorthodox.  There might even be questions or worse regarding the legitimacy of the heir's right to rule."

The King was neither persuaded, nor dissuaded, and made this clear.

"I am the King!  My word is law.  If I say someone inherits, they inherit!  It's your job to get it done, not squabble uselessly!"

With resigned glances and quiet despair there was but one answer to give.

"Your Will be done My Lord!"

The councilors were expecting a normal meeting.  This was not shaping up to be a normal meeting.

"My King… did I hear you correctly?... You wish to construct a castle made entirely of lode iron?"

The other councilors were similarly gobsmacked.  The cost would bankrupt the kingdom for sure.  Not to mention the lack of iron mines in the kingdom itself.

"Yes.  It is necessary for the defence of the kingdom and the royal line."

This idea was madness… but that the alternative was death was quite clear.  The councilors one by one murmured their agreement of the plan.

The Queen called the diet mere days after her crowning and while the call was anticipated, it was months earlier than expected.  Changes of policy and laws usually took months if not years to hammer out, so calling the diet so soon was unheard of.  As usual, the conclave of nobles and traders were unruly.  The Queen taking the speaker's platform quieted the sussurations, but didn't silence them.  Her first words, however, did.

"I intend to ban the possession, trading and creation of iron.  You will discuss this.  You will reject and accept in equal terms.  You will argue and debate.  With this We will have a way forward at the end of this diet.  Perhaps you will come to accept my reasoning.  Perhaps you will convince me to abandon this endeavor.  I will say this, however; I am quite determined."

Prince Phillip dearly hoped Aurora's diplomats had gone insane.

"You realize that our main trade good is iron, right?  Breaking this trade, regardless of how slowly or carefully done it is, will damage relations between us."

"It is the will of The Queendom as a whole. We appreciate the difficulties this will eventually pose.  The current plan may be adjusted, but it will not be abandoned."

"Beastie,... You owe them nothing."

"After so long and so much trouble… I will do nothing but stand among them, Fairy Godmother."

"And I will stand by you as I have always done."

"Together"

Notes:

I feel like I could (should) have added like 4-5 more sections on the insane decisions made by rulers in this universe, but let's leave this here.
