Reports of the record-breaking deal hit the newsstands two days later, much to the delight of the other Dregs. Kaz had limped down the stairs that morning to find copies of the papers covering the DeKappel sale littering the landing, the Dregs milling about the parlor watching him closely with barely disguised mirth. Perhaps, Kaz considered, he’d made art theft too much his signature. Might be time to lay off.
OR: Kaz is definitely not going to steal that DeKappel. He is definitely not falling for the Wraith. He is definitely not planning on taking over the Dregs. A lot of things aren't happening, except that they are

Summary
in a very different lifetime, Kaz and Inej find each other.

So the Rietveld boys stay with the caravanserai. Jordie’s easy manners and faster tongue smooths the way when faced with suspicious law enforcement, and Kaz’s quick hands and faster mind are put to good use. He learns the basic accounting from Jasmir, who does the books, and displays a near frightening capacity for calculating the entire sum of the day’s takings in his head, right down to the last coin.
So the years pass by and soon the caravanserai forgets that the Rietveld boys were ever outsiders, or even that they’re Kerch. They are just another part of the caravanserai. Life seems to have found a groove for them all.
Until the Ghafa troupe comes down into the valley.

It didn’t seem real.
The hand in hers, the Ketterdamn sun shining bright, the two lost figures far off in the harbor. Even as Inej bounded towards her mother and father, the people she knew so long ago, she could hardly believe that she was even there.
As slippery as ever, she wove between the crowds, hopping over crates of goods and ducking beneath tables. Her feet were so light she may as well have been flying.
When she was within view of her parents, when she could finally make out the details of their faces, their hair, their authentic Suli clothes that she hadn’t seen in so long, she let out a cry that sounded more like it would come from a little girl than the Wraith. Her parents finally caught sight of her, a wisp of a girl, a woman, amongst the clamoring masses.
