“Great, thank you Anika.” She smiled quickly before glancing back at the entrance where light from the oil lanterns strung throughout the tent shone through the slit in the fabric.
“Don’t be nervous, I’ve seen you up there before, you make it look so easy.” Anika said, noticing her concern.
“I’m not nervous, but thank you.”
A second later cheers erupted from the tent and Kaz’s coarse voice came through the noise of the crowd. “That was our amazing stilt walker, now make some noise for the girl who can walk on air!”What if the dregs was a circus instead of a gang?

The stage. The applause.
Wukong felt his heart hammering in his chest as he performed. The lights were shining in his eyes and he couldn’t see the faces of the people in the crowd, but he could feel their eyes on him. They were all watching. They were waiting to see his performance. Judging it. He kept on a smile, lifting an iron pole that held a couple of the other performers, bending that pole after lowering them back to the ground, juggling tires with ease and praying he didn’t drop one of them from stress. Did he imagine the way one of them nearly slipped from his hands? He felt like they could all see right through him. They could see that he was struggling to remember his lines. Even though he’d performed this so many times, he still felt like the words were trying to slip from his mind. There were a couple times when he couldn’t even remember the lines that he was supposed to say, but he opened his mouth and they came out anyway. He’d done this performance a hundred times… he could do this. He could do this.

It was getting dark now, and the great black tent of the circus just visible outside the city bounds was slowly disappearing against the fading sky. Branzy couldn’t see any of the smaller red and black stripped tents surrounding it from where he was, but the main tent was obvious even from just the part that could been seen, appearing to lean towards the city with a promise of blood.
