Work Text:
Consul Alec Lightwood-Bane was fearless. Or so the stories went, their variations spread all across Idris— He defeated greater demons using one arrow. He fought countless battles and won. He killed a Raum brood mother demon— each more wild than the last. After all, the position of Consul wasn't just open to anybody, there had to be some truth to those stories, right ?
Wrong.
Alec wasn't fearless, he feared many things, and never had he felt that more than now, knuckles white from clenching his fist too tightly and a frown on his face as he looked at his husband.
"You have a rune for remembering things, don't you?"
"I do."
"And yet you forgot."
"I did."
Anybody who knew Magnus could confidently say he had two sides. One was patient, one was not. The latter usually proved unfortunate for whoever happened to be on the receiving end.
"How?"
"Magnus I am so-"
Magnus shushed him before he could speak, his free hand coming up, the other engaged in petting the cat snuggled comfortably in his lap looking way too self satisfied than Alec had ever expected to see an animal look.
Chairman Meow, you traitorous bastard.
"I am not asking for an apology, Alexander, I'm asking for an explanation. How could you forget our anniversary?"
Alec sighed, knowing there was no easy way out of this, he had dug his grave, now he had to lie in it.
He had forgotten their anniversary, too caught up with work to notice anything until his phone lit up and the words ``CONGRATULATIONS" appeared on the small notification pane, courtesy of one Jace Herondale. At first he was confused. However it just took a few seconds for that confusion to morph into panic as he took his jacket and left, mentally thanking his parabatai for sparing him more trouble than he already was in and picking up a bouquet on the way to save for himself some semblance of dignity.
He reapplied his equilibrium rune when he reached home, stealthily trying to sneak into the apartment. He had clearly overestimated his abilities, a fact that became clear once he looked around after entering through the window, heart almost giving away when he saw two pairs of slit pupiled cat eyes staring back at him in the dark, the flowers in his hand falling to the floor with a light thud. The lights flicked on at the exact moment by the flick of a perfectly manicured hand to allow Alec to see what he already knew.
One pair of said eyes belonged to his better half and the other to their little feline family member.
"I trust you had a good day, darling." said Magnus, his calm tone doing nothing to ease Alec's mind.
He didn't know what possessed him to open his mouth then, the words tumbling out the most embarrassing he could have said,
"I, uh- Demon ate my keys again?"
"I am sorry Magnus, I remembered, hell I had planned a week ago that I'd come home early tonight and we'll go to that Ethiopian place at the 44th you're always talking about but there was just so much work since morning it- it slipped my mind, I didn't mean to upset you."
Magnus just rolled his eyes and moved to stand up, Chairman Meow jumping off his lap and stalking off with his usual air of carelessness.
"Fine, apology accepted.", he said, putting his arms around Alec's neck, "but next time you forget this, I can and will lock you in a room with Sheldon. For a day ."
"You wouldn't."
"Try me."
"The chances of that happening aren't any more than you getting Simon's name right,"
Magnus narrowed his eyes, and Alec's face hurt from grinning too hard at the beautiful love of his life,
"Plus- You're the High Warlock of Alicante, torturing a shadowhunter won't look good, you know?"
"Oh I'll be forgiven," Magnus smiled, pulling Alec closer as the latter rested his hands on Magnus's waist, "the Consul is my husband."
"Is he now.", every thought had left Alec's mind by now, eyes flicking between Magnus's lips and eyes, the proximity leaving him just as breathless as it had the first time he saw him.
"Mhm. And you're forgetting one more thing."
"What?", Alec answered without thinking this time, distracted by Magnus moving his head to the side, his breath warm against Alec's skin as he kissed the deflect rune on his neck. His breath hitched against his throat, he felt lightheaded, eyes closing on instinct.
"I know all your weak spots."
The next few moments were a blur, their lips connecting in a flurry of movements as Magnus backed him against the couch, Alec falling on it as comfortably as he could, pulling his husband down with him so he wouldn't have to break the kiss. They pulled away only for air as he managed to get as few more " sorry "-s out, only to be stopped by Magnus's lips capturing his again, this time in a deliberate and slow kiss.
"It's okay. I love you, Alexander."
"I love you too."
Oh how Alec had missed this, he thought as Magnus pressed kisses to every part of his skin he could reach, starting from the corner of his mouth and working his way down his neck, prompting soft whimpers from Alec. Between their responsibilities and fixing the mess made by the dark war, they rarely had time to themselves these days. His bliss, however, was short-lived. Magnus had just taken off his shirt when they heard it.
Ding .
Alec groaned in annoyance, putting an arm over his head as he looked at Magnus, who looked even more angry, if that was possible. But more than that, he looked heavenly, Alec thought, it was as if he were the one created by the angels themselves, the glitter around his eyes shining brightly, hair a mess from Alec's hands in it and the skin of his throat glistening as the light hit it at just the right angle. Alec couldn't resist pulling him down once again, happily drowning the slight gasp Magnus let out with his mouth, hands finding purchase in his already ruined hair.
Ding .
Alec didn't think he had what it took to harbour the intention to genuinely murder someone. Now however, he was sure he was wrong, his assurance coming from the fact that if Magnus hadn't promised to be back in a second and went to open the door, he would have put an arrow into whoever it was.
He could hear voices in the hallway and finally decided to put on his shirt and go out, his annoyance not decreased in the least by what he saw. Jace and Isabelle with a big box in their hands.
"What's going on?", he asked Magnus, who just raised a perfect brow at him, not amused in the slightest.
"Why don't you tell me? What are your parabatai and your sister doing in our apartment, unannounced, this late at night."
Jace atleast had the grace to look embarrassed, about to open his mouth before Izzy beat him to it,
"Jace told me Alec forgot your anniversary so we thought we'd bring cake."
By now Magnus was just shooting an accusing look at Alec, who felt an embarrassed blush rising up his neck and glared at Jace, the blonde just smiling back awkwardly at him.
Isabelle's eyes were taking in their disheveled states,
"-Though it looks like you don't need our help, so we will just leave, bye.", she said, grabbing Jace and dragging him out the door with a hurried wave at them.
Alec's shoulder's slumped as he ran a hand over his face, turning to face Magnus,
"Magnus I-", Alec began, his sentence being interrupted by Magnus sauntering off with just one word,
"Bedroom."
