Unprofessional

Summary:

When Bokuto and Kuroo are sent on a business trip to sign a deal that relates to their specialties, they promise to be professional.
They didn't keep the promise, and someone saw.
Now their careers depend on Kenma, and whatever offer they can make him.

Notes:

There's no actual NSFW but I thought since it was an office AU it would be funny as a tag

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Kuroo and Bokuto were on their way to their boss’s office, after he called them in.

“You have any idea what this is about?” Kuroo asked.

“No. You think we’re in trouble?”

“Hope not.”

They walked into the office together.

“What’s this about?” Kuroo asked while they sat down.

“So I’m sending you two on this business trip. We’re planning a collaboration with several other companies, make a good impression. We need this deal,” Kuroo and Bokuto’s boss explained quickly, once they walked into his office. “This has to do with your special fields, and I want you coming back with good results.”

“Don’t worry, I know Kenma better than anyone. We’ll get the deal and it’ll be fine,” Kuroo assured him.

“And you two can be professional?”

“If we weren’t, we wouldn’t be working here.”

“I’m counting on you. Don’t screw us over.”

“We got this covered!” Bokuto said. “Nothing to be worried about.”

“Great, we’ll discuss details later on. Now get back to work.”

“Roger that!”

They both got up and went to their desks.

“What did he want?” Daichi asked.

“We’re being sent to that trip next month.”

“Wow. That’s important work.”

“I think it’s because we have close ties to Kenma, so there’s more chances to land the deal.”

Daichi nodded. “That makes sense. Well, you guys got this.”

“Thanks, I’ll bring you candies from the hotel,” Kuroo joked.

“Appreciate it. Let’s get to work.”

On their way back home from work, Kuroo found out Bokuto was more excited about the conference than he previously showed.

“I mean, it’s so cool! When’s the last time you’ve been to Kyoto?”

“Haven’t seen the place since I graduated university,” Kuroo said. “It’ll be cool to see the place again.”

“Exactly! And to see Kenma again at work?”

“I see Kenma all the time, so do you.”

“But have you ever seen him at work?”

“No.”

“Aren’t you curious?”

“A little,” he admitted.

“See? It’ll be awesome! Also, free hotel food.”

With that, Kuroo had agree. “Free food is the best.”

“So you agree it’ll be fun?”

“Yeah, I guess so.”

“Yay! Also, we’re home.”

“Great.” Kuroo got out of the car once Bokuto finished parking. “I’ll take care of something for dinner.”

“You sure? I can cook.”

“Kou, you always cook. Let me take care of it tonight, kay?”

“Alright.”

“Go put on a movie, we’ll eat in the living room.”

“Okay!”

They walked into the empty house, taking their shoes off and turned the lights off. Kuroo went to the kitchen to make their dinner, while Bokuto picked the movie for them.

They ended up falling asleep earlier than planned, cuddling on the couch together while their movie continued playing and their dirty dishes laid on the small coffee table of the living room.

A month later, they were checking into the hotel. The conference in Kyoto was going to last three days, and Kuroo and Bokuto hoped that by the end they would secure a deal that would please everyone.

“Kenma!” Kuroo called out, seeing his friend walking towards them.

“Hey.”

“Hey!”

“How was the trip here?”

“Long, tiring. We left in the middle of the night which wasn’t fun. But we’re here now.”

“Great, you have about an hour to rest and collect yourselves. We have a few more representatives from other companies on their way, then we’ll start the first meeting.”

“Got it.” Kuroo nodded. “Hopefully this will go well.”

“Yeah, I think we could all earn a lot from this if we reach the right agreement.”

“Got the keys,” Bokuto said.

“Great, I’ll see you later?”

“Yeah, see you.”

Bokuto and Kuroo grabbed their stuff and went to their room.

“Woah, this place is like… Fancy fancy,” Bokuto laid his bag in the corner of the room.

“For sure. I like it.”

“Same. So what should we do?”

“Personally, I feel like we should sleep. Then we’ll see.”

“Great idea! Maybe we can see the city a bit later, show me all the places you’d go to when you went to school here.”

“Yeah, that sounds fun. I’m gonna go shower.”

While Kuroo showered, Bokuto started looking around everything in the room, examining it. Once he got in the shower himself, Kuroo did the same. When they both finished getting ready to sleep a bit, Kuroo set a timer and they got into bed. Bokuto fell asleep almost immediately, but Kuroo took a little longer.

The first few meetings went well. It seemed like most companies participating had similar goals, so coming to some sort of deal on their collaboration would be rather easy. By the end of the second day both Bokuto and Kuroo were exhausted. On one hand, the work was satisfying to them, they knew everyone back at the company would be happy as well and it encouraged them. On the other hand, the workload and all the discussions were tiring.

“I’m so happy we’re going back home tomorrow,” Kuroo said, crashing back on the bed.

“Yeah, same. Things seem to be going well though!”

“Yeah, hopefully we can finish all the little details of it in time.”

“I’m sure we can, everyone wants this.” Bokuto sat next to Kuroo, who started to sit up. “It’ll all go well.”

“I hope you’re right.” Kuroo sighed and leaned his head on Bokuto’s head, who in turn started playing with Kuroo’s hair.

“When am I ever wrong?”

“You don’t wanna open that.”

“Hey!”

Kuroo started laughing and lifted his head to kiss Bokuto.

“I love you.”

“I love you too. Even if you’re mean.”

“Mean, but right,” Kuroo said softly with a teasing grin, while leaning in for another kiss, which Bokuto accepted happily. Kuroo brought his hand up to cup Bokuto’s face, smoothing his thumb over Bokuto’s jawline, and tilting his head up slightly.

Bokuto hummed into the kiss slightly, pulling him closer. He eventually pulled away from the kiss, keeping his face close to Kuroo’s.

“This is nice.”

“Very nice.”

“I’m glad you’re here with me.”

“So am I, love.”

Bokuto found himself blushing at the petname, which he hasn’t heard in a while. In an attempt to distract Kuroo from his red face, he kissed him again. Kuroo seemed to accept that well, kissing Bokuto back. They stayed that way for a little while. The couple were so immersed in each other, they didn’t see that someone opened the door and walked in.

Kuroo was the first to notice, and pulled away quickly.

“What are you two doing?” Kenma asked.

“What does it look like?”

“Okay, fair. You understand I have to report this, right?”

“NO DON’T!”

“I have to.”

“Kenma please we’ll get into so much trouble.”

“Kuro, this is part of my job.”

“Well our jobs are on the line!”

“Is there nothing you can do?”

“Well…”

“I don’t like this look,” Kuroo said. “It’s the look you get when you’re scheming.”

“I never scheme. But… This is a business trip. Let’s do some business.”

“Are you blackmailing us?”

“I guess you could say that. I prefer the term extortion. Make me an offer, something I can’t refuse.”

“You’re horrible.”

“Yet you’re still my best friend.”

“True, I’m a sucker.”

“Good luck you two.” Kenma left and closed the door.

“We have to figure this out or we’ll lose our jobs,” Kuroo said.

“Yeah… So what’s one offer Kenma can’t refuse?”

“I have no idea.”

They’ve gotten into trouble due to unprofessional behaviour before (though most of it was mostly related to fireworks and silly string). Their boss warned them they were on probation for the next three months after the last incident, and this trip was their chance to prove they were able to be professional.

They got the jobs together a year and a half beforehand, and were extremely happy to be working together. Kuroo’s job as a data analyst for the company wasn’t too difficult. He was able to get things done efficiently and quickly, helping to contribute to the company. He would be lying if he said he didn’t like many parts of his job, but the environment made everything more enjoyable.

Bokuto absolutely loved working as a part of the animators team. It was something he always loved doing and wanted to do professionally, and he was absolutely thrilled to be able to do it. The rest of the team was pretty tight knit and he blended in with them perfectly, working with them was a great experience for him.

They were honestly able to say they liked working for their small company (which was something rather rare), and didn’t want to lose their comfortable jobs.

So Kuroo stayed up half the night to figure out what he could do to have him and Bokuto keep their jobs.

By the time they had lunch the next day, they both already had a few ideas, though they weren’t sure any of them would work.

“Money won’t work,” Kuroo opened. “He’s got enough. Whatever we offer shouldn’t be materialistic. It won’t help.”

“That’s true. But would he want?”

“I don’t know yet…”

“Why’s he making us do this anyways?” Bokuto complained. “He could just let it slide.”

“No, no.” Kuroo sighed. “It’s pretty smart. If he lets it slide, it doesn’t mean he’s the only one who knows. But if he has some sort of incentive so that it doesn’t get out he’ll also make sure word doesn’t get out. He’s doing us a pretty big favour, even if it’s annoying.”

“Didn’t think about it like that…”

“Yeah, it’s annoying but helpful in a way.”

“So let’s find some offer we can give him. You know him better than anyone after all.”

Bokuto and Kuroo were always a great team, since they were in high school. Whether it was getaway plans when they did stupid things as high schoolers together, or even pitching business plans. They always had each other’s backs, and were willing to go along with it all. They each had a different type of smarts in their favour, so when they put their heads together and tried their plans always prospered.

In a way, it was never a surprise they ended up as a romantic couple. In a way, they completed each other. Bokuto was such an ambitious person, he pulled everyone he was with forward. He had creative and innovative ideas, and it was easy to say people around him absolutely adored him.

Kuroo, on the other hand, was a much more grounded person. He was level-headed and cool, and very realistic. When Bokuto was getting ahead of himself, or trying to go too far, Kuroo was always able to bring him back to earth without bringing down his spirit. When they worked in a team, everything always seemed easier.

Which is probably why they had a plan ready after less than two hours.

“So we think we have a good offer for you,” Kuroo said, closing the door to Kenma’s hotel room behind him.

“Yeah? Let’s hear you.”

If he didn’t know better, Kuroo would have thought that Kenma sounded hopeful.

“We know we can’t offer you anything like money, since you have more than enough.”

“That’s true.”

“So we both racked our brains, thinking what we could offer to make sure you won’t report us, and Kou ended up figuring it out.”

“And what did he figure out?”

“Remember our new intern?” Bokuto asked. “The one who started about six months ago? Hinata?”

“Yeah, Shouyou.”

“He may or may not have been asking about you since he found out that Tetsu and I know you.”

“Like… For business?” Kenma furrowed his eyebrows.

“No, he just wants us to introduce you to him. He seemed pretty excited when Tetsu said he’d bring it up.”

“And I distinctly remember that you said he’s cute, and seemed nice.”

“So what’s the offer?”

“We put you in contact with chibi-chan, by setting you two on a blind date. You both seem to like each other. After getting to know each other… Who knows?” Kuroo shrugged innocently.

“So your offer is to play matchmaker with me and your intern?”

“Not an intern anymore, he works on the animation team now. But yes.”

Kenma sat there for a minute, contemplating. Kuroo and Bokuto held their breath in anticipation.

“Sounds good. I’ll let everything slide and make sure everyone else who knows will as well.”

“Really?”

“Yeah.”

“Thank you so much!” Bokuto said.

“Hey, it’s nothing. You get why I did this.”

“Yeah, and thanks for keeping us out of trouble.”

“No problem. Thanks for your help.”

“We’ll be going now, see you at the final meeting.”

“See you.”

Kuroo and Bokuto walked out of the room, and grinned at each other.

“Seems like our troubles are over.”

“Seems so. Your idea was brilliant, I knew it’d work.”

“You’re too sweet.” Bokuto blushed.

“Sure. Let’s go get ready.”

After returning from the trip, their boss concluded it to be a full success as they got a great deal. Bokuto and Kuroo considered it a success because they managed to do their jobs well without being written up for unprofessional behaviour (again). Kenma thought it was a success because three months after his first date with Hinata, they finally made everything official.

And at the end of it all, everyone was left satisfied.

This is more of a crack oneshot but it was very fun to write
