Work Text:

Was it my desperate wish to see you that

summoned you here before me?

My unanswered questions, uncertain feelings

all vanish, insignificant, when I see you.

You grant me the sight of your once-familiar

smile, and for a fraction of a second,

I can pretend everything is as it was before.

But you are not here - were never here -

and I am alone.

I do not know what you were praying for –

I did not pray for a miracle

and yet you see me.

***

Did the gods hear the prayers I offered up

and chanced to make me their oracle?

There was an echo, a mirage, a fault line in time.

There was you – sunshine in the snow –

And he beside you – clad in black.

The vision of future things not yet come to pass.

I, separated from you, by more than spacetime,

stand at a distance.

But you lift your head and beam at me,

lovelier than any poet’s description.

And I know in that moment that

you see me.

Notes:

It's been a very long time since I've written any poetry, but I really enjoyed getting to experiment a tiny bit!
