Golden Opportunity

Summary:

Yamato asks Sora something he had been wanting to for a while, with a little help from Piyomon and Gabumon. [Sorato][Prompt Fic]

Notes:

Prompt: “Golden opportunity.” It’s not every month that we do daily prompts, so time to make the most of it! Think of one of your characters presented with a golden opportunity and how they react to it. Do they even understand the opportunity they’ve been given? (300 words)

This is set in Digimon Adventure 02 after the Christmas episode. I thought it would be cute for the Digimon to meddle somehow in fitting this prompt. Happy reading!

Work Text:

One day, after the last class of the day, Yamato silently walked through the gate and outside of the school’s entrance. Each step away from the door was a wave of relief at the fact that school was over for the day. He looked forward to hanging out with Gabumon at home, and getting his hands on his bass guitar to fiddle with a new melody that he had been humming all week.

“Where could she be?”

The feminine voice stopped Yamato in his tracks. That was the voice that Yamato thought had a pleasant, comforting tone to it, and it was from a girl that seemed to draw his attention quickly.

“Sora?” he called, approaching her as she stood near the bushes. She turned to face him, and she seemed to have a look of worry.

“Yamato,” she replied, then lowered her voice to a whisper so that no one else could hear. “Have you seen Piyomon? I told her to meet me around here after school.”

At that moment, he began to wonder where Gabumon had been.

“I can help you find her,” Yamato whispered back. “Keep an eye out for Gabumon, too.”

“Okay.”

He and Sora set off in opposite directions, though it did not take long for him to hear a, “psst!” nearby. That made him turn to spot a creature in bright pink feathers outlined in blue behind a tree, motioning him to come closer.

“Piyomon?” Yamato asked. “-and Gabumon?” he added, spotting his blue-furry friend next to Piyomon. The two Digimon held flowers picked from the stems.

“Look, Yamato!” Gabumon said. “We found flowers that you can give to Sora. She’ll love them!”

“It was all Gabumon’s idea!” Piyomon said, with Gabumon standing up proudly in response.

“What are you trying to do?” Yamato asked, making a face.

“Giving you your golden opportunity,” Gabumon replied with a nod.

“Wha-?” Yamato stood back, trying to sound confused, but he felt a tinge of heat creep up his cheeks as he knew exactly what they meant.

“You already know how Sora feels about you,” Piyomon added. “It’s obvious that you feel the same. Maybe these will help show her how you feel, too.”

“Yamato?”

Her sweet-sounding voice reached Yamato’s ears once again, and his heart skipped a beat, his nerves making him hesitate.

“Don’t leave without these,” said Gabumon, forcing the flowers into Yamato’s hands, making him nearly yelp in protest.

Piyomon helped to turn Yamato around. “Off you go!” she chirped as she and Gabumon pushed him closer to Sora.

Sora stared at Yamato in confusion, then leaned to his side. “Piyomon? Gabumon? What’s going on?”

Yamato watched as he approached him with the two Digimon huddled closely behind him. He had quickly hid the flowers behind his back.

“They were just playing around,” Yamato explained with a smile. “I’m glad I found them.”

“Me, too!” Sora said with a sigh of relief. “I’m glad that we were here together.”

Piyomon cleared her throat loudly, and Yamato pressed his lips together.

“Actually,” Yamato said, “I, um, got something for you…”

“Oh?”

When Yamato brought his hand around to reveal the bouquet of flowers, Sora gasped.

“Wow,” she said softly. “This is for me?”

Yamato nodded, and felt his cheeks warm once again. And when Sora took them in her hands, Yamato noticed her cheeks turning pink.

“I don’t know what to say! I love them! The flowers, I mean…”

He noticed her face turning red, but the smile on her lips made him feel a warmth that the sun could never give. Somehow, that gave him courage.

“Are you going anywhere today?” he asked. “Maybe we can hang out together.”

Sora smiled more widely. “I’d love to.”

Yamato smiled at Sora in return. Then, he walked side-by-side with Sora with their Digimon partners behind them, knowing that they were both talking excitedly between themselves. He chuckled at that and Sora looked at him curiously.

"What is it?" she asked.

"It’s nothing," he replied, but maybe he would tell her one day that it was something - that it was thanks to their Digimon for the golden opportunity to be with her.
