Work Text:
Megumi had been dating his boyfriend for five months already. They’d met when Megumi had been looking for an apartment, and found that Yuuji and his roommate, Nobara had an extra room available for the taking near their school. Despite his efforts to the contrary, Megumi ended up developing a stupid high school crush on his male roommate less than a week after moving in. In his defense, it had been hard to reisist falling for Yuuji’s beaming smile, his stupidly kind heart, and his general friendly demeanor.
After a few weeks, Megumi caved in and confessed, spilling his guts over Yuuji and then apologizing. He really hadn’t expected the pink-haired guy to reciprocate his feelings; in fact, he had mostly made up his mind about avoiding him for the rest of his life.
But Yuuji just smiled and asked shyly if he wanted to start dating.
Megumi instantly accepted.
And ever since then, the two had been a happy couple. Yuuji cherished the prickly boy as if he was the most precious thing in the world, and Megumi remained as smitten as he had been with Yuuji since day one, no matter how many times he saw him drool or hear him fart or do something equally embarrassing.
Nobara seemed to be the only one who was less than satisfied with the arrangement, complaining about the two of them being “mushy” or “stupid” whenever they showed each other the slightest bit of affection around her. (They shot her down every time by pointing out that she had been doing the same thing with Maki for much, much longer, and they never complained.)
Having Yuuji in his life made Megumi happier. He would never admit it, it was way too cheesy, but his boyfriend was basically the light of his life. Even better, Yuuji seemed happy with their relationship as well.
Despite this, Megumi avoided telling most of his family about his relationship until the guilt of keeping it secret for so long wore down at him and he gave in. There was one exception to this, and that was his youngest older sister, Tsumiki. He only told her after she triple promised to not tell their parents.
Yuuji was pretty much the exact opposite. As soon as the two of them had their third date, he gushed to his brothers about Megumi without hesitation.
Even though Megumi was secretly very scared of his brothers, despite never having met them.
The topic of Yuuji’s brothers had come up during a conversation in his room, when Megumi had mentioned being the youngest child in his family.
“Oh, me too!” Yuuji said, attention torn away from his manga, which he still read religiously despite being in college.
“Really?” Megumi said. “I’ve got three sisters. How many siblings do you have?”
At that, Yuuji seemed to… cringe. He let out an awkward chuckle. “Uh… I only have brothers.” He forced out the next words as if something was physically preventing him from speaking. “N-nine of them.”
Megumi gaped.
“My parents died when I was super little, so they took care of me for pretty much my whole life. They’re super sweet though, don’t worry! My oldest three actually live pretty close to here.”
Yuuji held up his phone to show him a recent-looking picture of himself smiling with three somewhat-older-looking dudes. One was short with a huge smile and knobby-looking teeth, one was tall and muscular, and the third was pale with pigtails and a single face tattoo. Despite his goth, almost scary exterior, he regarded the camera with a soft smile.
Yuuji took his phone away before showing him another photo, this one older, that was a sort of family photo with nine guys, all ranging from adult to teen. All of them were smiling and bickering and playing; so natural, as if they were all in their element. In the center was the tattooed one, younger, calmly smiling and holding a tiny, pink-haired baby that was giggling and reaching toward the older with stubby fingers.
Megumi’s heart melted at the sight, his entire attention consumed by the baby’s tiger onesie and the familiar birthmarks adorning his eyes.
His wonder was rudely interrupted when Yuuji pulled his phone away and blushed. “Sorry I didn’t tell you earlier. I didn’t wanna scare you away or anything. I promise they’re super nice, though! Really!”
Megumi shrugged. “It’s okay.”
As if being smitten with this guy wasn’t enough, he now had the added risk of being beaten up by 9 adult men if he, god forbid, ever did anything to hurt Yuuji. Awesome.
His brothers actually turned out to be way less intimidating in real life, though, at least the ones he ended up meeting. When Yuuji told them, the three oldest insisted they all go out to dinner together to get to meet him.
And though it was clear that they were all pretty protective of their “baby brother,” (especially the oldest, Choso,) they were perfectly kind and accepting of Megumi. In fact, by the end of the night, they all seemed to have half a mind to bring him into their family themselves.
This experience just added to the guilt that addled him over not telling his own family about Yuuji. So, a few months later, he finally did it.
They reacted exactly how he expected.
“Yuuji,” he approached his boyfriend one night while he was making dinner. “I have something to tell you.”
Brown eyes trained on him, curious. “What’s up, ‘Gumi?”
God, the nickname. Yuuji was trying to kill him, he was positive. There was no way he would still like him after this. He would think Megumi was ashamed of him, or– “I haven’t told my family about you until now.” He forced the words out.
Yuuji tilted his head. “…And?”
“…I’m sorry.”
Yuuji just smiled patiently at him. “‘Gumi, I understand! I’m sure you have a perfectly good reason not to have told them. Not all parents are accepting of this sort of thing, you know?”
No. He thought they were homophobic? Oh, if only he knew. If only he fucking knew.
“That’s not really it, it’s just… my parents can be a little bit… overbearing? I didn’t want them to freak you out, cause they can be pretty eager with this sort of thing. Which is… partially why I came to talk to you.”
Yuuji listened intently, his food left to simmer in solitude.
“They were wondering if we wanted to stay at their place over break. Or, well, part of it. Whatever works for you.”
Yuuji grinned. “Of course! I’ll have to tell Nii-san that I won’t be able to spend all of the break with them, but I’m sure he’ll be fine! I’m excited!”
He finished up the stew and ladled out bowls for both him and Megumi, sitting beside him at the counter. Megumi dug in right away; his boyfriend’s cooking was always amazing .
“What’s your family like? You haven’t told me much about them besides your sister.”
Megumi thoughtfully chewed on a piece of meat. “It’s… a little complicated,” he admitted after a while. “My… dad… guardian– person, Satoru, was a friend of my dad. He took me and my sister in after he died.”
As annoying as the man was, Megumi was grateful for that. If he hadn’t been the one to take him in, then he would have had to go live with his extended family. His cousin, Maki, had a miserable childhood, so he could only imagine how it would have been like for him.
“His partner, Suguru, had already adopted my sisters at that point, so when they got married we moved in with them.
“So…” Yuuji said. “Not homophobic, I’m assuming?”
“Oh no, they totally are,” Megumi said, deadpan. Yuuji laughed; it was the best sound in the world.
“What do they do? Your parents, I mean.” he asked once the laughter faded away.
Oh god. That question. “Suguru’s an engineer.” He left out the part where he was famous in his field and responsible for a great deal of the most innovative inventions of their era. “Satoru’s an actor.”
“Woah, like in movies and stuff?”
Megumi nodded reluctantly.
“I love movies! What’s his full name? I wonder if I’ll recognize it!”
“SatoruGojo,” he responded, trying to make it as incomprehensible as possible.
Yuuji seemed to understand him, if his comical jaw drop was anything to go by. “Your dad is Satoru Gojo? ”
Megumi nodded, muttering something about the inaccuracy of the word dad. Yuuji was indifferent to this. His eyes went wider somehow. “That’s insane! He’s like, super big! Or used to be, I guess. No offense to him. But his older movies are amazing! Why didn’t you tell me?”
Megumi did his best to hide his face in his bowl.
“Oh, yeah. I’m sorry. I won’t fanboy over your dad when I meet him, I promise!! I’m sure he’s totally down to earth in person, anyway.” His face became more serious. “This is supposed to be a time to meet your family, not to focus on your dad. I know that, Megumi. I promise.”
His boyfriend smiled back at him. He tried not to focus on the fact that he had just sent the light of his life into a semi-metaphorical wolf’s den.
—
Break came faster than Megumi was prepared for, and soon enough they were on the train to his hometown. It wasn’t the most expensive or wealthy region in Japan; it was just Suguru’s coastal hometown, but unfortunately for Megumi that just made his parent’s house stand out more.
House was actually not the right word. More fitting would be mansion.
He could see Yuuji was visibly nervous. The pink-haired boy usually slept like a baby on trains, but he had been wide awake the whole time, definitely overthinking.
Megumi reached out and clutched Yuuji’s usually warm, now clammy hand in his own. “Nervous?”
Yuuji smiled. “I have nine older brothers. This is nothing!” He chuckled quietly, but it was strained.
Megumi assumed they weren’t making this any easier by lingering on the front step. He tugged Yuuji forth, almost knocking on the door before remembering that this was his own house.
“Satoru! Suguru!” he called as they entered the front door. “We’re here!”
His boyfriend gazed in awe around the front hall, taking in the elaborate decor. It was even more luxurious on the inside.
It was weird, Megumi thought, seeing Yuuji be dazzled by the place he had lived nearly ever since Satoru had taken the two of them in and married Suguru. To him, it hardly seemed strange at all anymore, living in such a big place.
They were greeted first and foremost by his two dogs, a pair of wolf-like mutts, one black and one white. The two giant things began jumping all over Megumi when they saw him in a black and white storm of love and affection. He couldn’t resist meeting them with plenty of scratches and baby talk; encouraging the bad behavior despite himself.
“Sit,” he told them firmly, rewarding them with even more pats when they complied. “This is Adzuki and Aki, my two reasons for returning,” he said to Yuuji, pointing at each of them. His boyfriend’s eyes were huge and watery, as if simply the sight of the two animals was enough to bring him to tears. He immediately got to his knees and began showering the dogs with attention.
“What was that I heard? Have you no love for your loving father who loves you by-the-way~?” Both of them looked up at the figure descending the wide staircase, dressed in a purple silk robe that looked as if it had been haphazardly draped over him to hide his (Suguru’s?) Pokemon T-shirt and gray sweatpants.
“Hi, Satoru,” Megumi said unenthusiastically.
“Oh, come here,” Satoru said, pulling him into a firm hug. “We’ve missed you so much! You’re so tall! Have you grown again?” He had to be teasing him. Satoru still towered over his son in all his 6’3” glory.
Megumi reluctantly reciprocated the hug. Unwilling to admit it as he was, he had missed Satoru. A little bit.
Once free, he nudged Yuuji, who was caught in a blank stare beside him. His boyfriend immediately dropped, bowed at his waist.
“Nice to meet you, Gojo-san!” he said almost mechanically.
Satoru chuckled. “No need to be so formal. It’s nice to meet you, our Megumi-chan’s dear partner! You’re so adorable in person! Call me Satoru, I insist.” Without warning, he pulled Yuuji into a hug.
Yuuji was in shock. This sure was the actor, with his unnatural blue eyes, white hair, and immaculate features. And he was hugging him, no less. Did he just call him adorable, too? He had to be dreaming.
“Suguru!” Satoru shouted up the stairs as soon as he let Yuuji go. “Our son is home! Come down and say HI!” He turned back to regard the two students with a smile as they waited for his husband to show up.
Suguru appeared moments later, trudging down the steps. His normally perfectly groomed hair was still unkempt, as if he’d just gotten out of bed. Megumi realized with shock that that probably was the case; he was still in his pajamas. It was 2pm.
“Megumi! Welcome home, sweetie!” He hugged Megumi and smiled, seeming to regain some semblance of humanity as he realized there were other people in his home. “And you must be Yuuji-kun! It’s nice to meet you!”
Yuuji repeated his bowing ritual to Suguru. “Nice to meet you, Geto-san!”
“Call me Suguru,” he said kindly. “I hope my husband didn’t give you too much trouble. He can be a little… overwhelming… when you first meet him.”
“Awww, Suguru~ I would never!” Satoru whined, leaning into the other’s personal space to deliver a few kisses. Suguru tried in vain to push him away, but his eyes were basically shining with affection. As were Satoru’s.
Megumi wondered if he and Yuuji would ever be that close.
“Tsumiki has exams and couldn’t make it until tomorrow, and Mimiko and Nanako were supposed to come today. I guess you beat them to it!” Satoru sang.
“Have you two been in bed all day?” Megumi asked, eyeing Suguru’s pajamas.
“What else is there to do when you’re rich and retired while your loving husband is home from work for the week?” Satoru said.
“You’re like 34.”
“Hey! 33!” he protested. “Anyway, we were thinking we might hit the beach today or one of these days, and we could go visit that park you always loved, Megumi! We’re totally looking at your little kid pictures, and–”
“But,” Suguru interrupted his husband, placing a hand firmly on his shoulder to silence him. “We should let them get settled, first. It must have been a long trip. We got your old room ready earlier.”
Satoru huffed. “I did, while you were sleeping in all morning.”
The two helped carry the students’ luggage upstairs before leaving them to their own devices. Probably going off to do… something. What his guardians did with all their time was a mystery to Megumi.
His old room was fit with all the furnishings and decorations of his youth. Here, his collection of his old favorite books, there, a lava lamp Gojo got for him, and littered all about were photos of him and his sisters from his youth. It was a little embarrassing, having such a bare window into his childhood right in the open for his boyfriend to look at.
It was fine as long as he didn’t look under the bed and find his old edgy poetry.
Yuuji dropped his bags and flopped onto the bed without a second thought. “Cute sheets!” he cooed, inspecting the covers which were patterned with little dogs.
“You wanna unpack first?” Megumi said with a smirk.
As a response, Yuuji just reached out his arms and made grabby hands. Megumi chuckled and fell down beside him, after which his boyfriend hugged him close like a stuffed animal. It was usually like this, or Megumi ended up spooning him.
“You good?” he asked, settling into his warm chest.
Yuuji nodded. “Your parents are… nice.”
Megumi snorted. Yuuji smiled.
“I mean it! Thanks for having me over.”
“That was all them,” he admitted. “But it is a little bit nice having you here.”
Yuuji kissed his forehead. They drifted off to sleep soon after.
