Summary
Zhou Zishu sees dead people.
It turns out that when you're halfway between living and dead yourself, it’s easier to see beyond the proverbial veil. Zhou Zishu ignores it the first several months after his body begins failing him. He already has to deal with his own mortality (though he most frequently considers it in the bottom of a glass). The point is he doesn’t want to deal with everyone else’s shit on top of it. So Zhou Zishu pretends not to see the ghost that tries to get his attention by standing along a cornfield on a darkened highway; he turns a blind eye to the spirit that lurks in the corner of the broken-down motel room he stays in one night. Instead, he keeps his head down and moves from place to place in the rusted-out beater of a car that he picked up for less than a grand. Maybe if he’s lucky, he’ll see a little bit of the world before he dies.
