Work Text:
Silence fills the air and space.
Thinking is what he does mostly unless it's to visit his found family, in which are the only gods who know about him.
Jester is the only god who isn't known to the villagers and most of the gods at the same time.
His godhood was more difficult than the other gods to not even be known by the emperor of the gods.
It was his curse.
His purgatory he had to face.
One day, however, he saw that Dave hadn't slept for 3 nights in a row and was able to go communicate with him. He didn't want to scare Dave but he really wanted to be able to talk to him.
Dave knew spending these nights not sleeping would be bad in the long run, but knew it was something he had to do in order to finish researching what the end was. As Dave was researching, he could feel his head and mind becoming more lighter and more transparent if you could say that. Just before Dave finished shaking the feeling of what was happening to his head and mind, he heard something from in the back of his mind.
"Can you hear me?"
The line repeated in his head over and over again till he couldn't even think his own thoughts anymore. Dave was so done with this voice in his head. After being pestered by the voice for some time, he finally gave in and started responding to it. To his surprise, it responds back not knowing what he was getting himself into. He listens to the voice but at the same time knew he was missing out on hanging out with his friends, but the voice told him otherwise as if he was a higher priority than them.
Once Jester introduced himself to Dave, he wanted Jester to say things that he and Napoleon have said to each other in conversation as a way to verify that Jester, was in fact, real and was one of the gods. Dave and Jester began talking to each other for a few minutes before Dave's sleep deprivation took a hold of Dave and made him tell Jester that he needs to go to sleep. Before Jester went away, he let Dave know about one thing.
"There's a hidden room under Napoleon's new house," the voice whispered. Dave had heard mentions of Napoleon hiding something before, but this was the most direct by far. He wondered if it meant that whatever was hiding there had become more serious. He felt himself shiver.
Dave slept on it. Sleeping always made the voice weaker, but it seemed like the initial contact was the most important one. Meaning this so-called Jester in his head wasn't going away any time soon. It cleared his head enough for him to think about what he'd been seeing in recent days. While in bed, Dave spaced out and began thinking of what Jester meant by what he said, but he pushed it away to get started for the day.
Napoleon was out later, visiting less, and adventuring more. He'd been like this ever since the last time he excavated some ruins. Dave had been brought some artifacts to research, but not as many as he expected. The doubts started cropping up again. Was the voice telling the truth? Could it be trusted? Was the voice trying to lure him into a trap?
When Napoleon came by the next time, Dave resolved to confront him. He tried to. He really tried to. But he just couldn't. He couldn't bring himself to bring down that upbeat persona Napoleon had.
Instead, he visited his home.
He stopped in one afternoon while Napoleon was there and had lunch with him. They spent time together like old times, despite Napoleon's jittery nature, and enjoyed themselves.
Dave had almost convinced himself that the voice was lying. Or wrong. Until he left. Off in the distance, he turned back to smile and wave at Napoleon.
Just in time to see the man slipping down into a hidden room under his home.
