Work Text:

As smoke moved around him, seeming to caress his skin as his bonds were breaking, he thought he could hear laughter.  The kind of laughter that chilled you to the bone, making your wolf want to tear the person laughing limb from limb.  That whisper of laughter finally fading, as the heat and the pain it caused allowed him to follow his family in to death’s waiting arms.

He couldn’t help that he came up fighting as he woke his wolf close enough to the surface that his claws barely missed Stiles as the little terror jumped back.

“You know better than to wake me like that, I could have hurt you.  I would have woken on my own.”  His voice still growling, even though his wolf wasn’t as close to the surface as it had been.

“Would you have left me sleeping if the situation had been reversed?”

They both knew that he wouldn’t.  More than once he’d found Stiles relieving parts of his past that had not been his fault in his sleep and woken him.

Neither of them needed those kinds of dreams.

Stiles could be just a dangerous as he was when woken unexpectedly, the boy had more magic in him than he realized.  The kind that came from mischief and chaos, which was not something he wanted to mention, or not yet anyway.

And if he ever got his hands on Noshiko Yukimura, blood would be spilled, and she knew it given how fast that family had left Beacon Hills.  They’d had one pass which had been used up just by them being in town.

The scent of his rather expensive coffee was enough to get him up off the sofa he’d fallen asleep on.  The book that Stiles had left with him, landing on the floor with a thump and a cloud of dust that only came from old books.  Landing on a page that he was more or less certain hadn’t been there before.

A barely heard hiss of laughter whispered in the air, laughter filled with the same mischief and chaos that came with that magic that Stiles really didn’t seem to know he had.

Maybe they ought to be having that discussion sooner rather than later.

But right now there was coffee calling.
