“Heyyy, man. It’s Mista. Listen, I know you like to pull a Houdini on your birthday, but Mom’s looking for you, so, yeah. Call him or me when you can, man. See ya.”
“Fugo? Please, I don’t mean to badger, but I would like to see you sometime today. We have something for you. Please be safe.”
“Listen kid. Don’t make us play Where’s Waldo all day today, okay?-”
Fugo dismissed his voicemail before the message even finished, dropping his phone onto the small table. He looked around the small café for any slightly familiar faces before taking another sip of his tea. The albino knew better; he should go back home or to the flat, grit through the fanfare of celebrating the day he came into the world, accept the gifts, and..just let it happen. Instead, he was hiding out in a café, drinking cheap tea and eating a small slice of Oreo cake, and periodically checking his surroundings like some paranoid weirdo. Just like last year.
“Hi! Uh, can I get the uhhh, ‘Citrus Lord Tea’ please?”
Fugo heard the voice, and lowered his head onto the table, wanting to disappear. He knew Narancia would probably have come looking for him; the guy was relentless sometimes.
“Thank you!”
The albino closed his eyes, listening to the footsteps, waiting for the sound of a chair scraping the floor, and a cheerful ‘Hey, Panna’ or ‘What’s up, birthday boy?’. Instead, he heard tables shifting and no words. He looked up and Narancia was at a different table, sitting on the booth side, looking down at his phone and bobbing his head. Fugo felt a twinge of irritation; was Narancia expecting him to come to him? The dark-hired boy’s head perked up, eyes meeting, and he waved at the albino with a smile before returning to his phone.
Twitching a bit, Fugo frowned before taking a stab at his cake. As he chewed, he looked up again and met eyes with his boyfriend, prompting the smaller male to get up to move. The dark-haired boy made his way over, plopping next to Fugo, planting a quick kiss on his cheek with a sweet,
“Hey, Panna.”
A spell of silence fell between them, too uncomfortable for Fugo. He broke it with a grumble,
“What are you doing here?”
Narancia looked over at him like the albino asked an obvious question.
“Getting some tea, of course.” Narancia chirped.
“I never thought I’d see you here, though,” he continued. “‘thought it’d be too ‘low-class’ for you.”
Fugo felt another twinge of irritation in his chest.
“If you’re here to try to drag me back to the flat, just do it. Don’t beat around the bush.”
“Citrus Lord Tea!”
“Oh, that’s mine! Hold on.” Narancia set his phone down before squeezing past the tables and walking up to the counter.
Fugo shook his head in bewilderment; why wasn’t Narancia being more..Narancia? Why wasn’t he all over him like usual? Whining about how Mom and everyone was looking for him? Trying to pull him off somewhere else?
The teen’s phone lit up with a message, and Fugo caught a quick glimpse of his lock screen before going black. It was of a smiling Narancia holding Stevie with both wearing sunglasses, bringing a small quirk to his lips.
“Hey!,” Narancia suddenly swiped his phone up while holding his drink. “don’t be peeking!”
Fugo’s ruby eyes rolled at the childish action before taking a sip of his now cold tea. Great.
“Nah, I’m just kidding!” Narancia giggled, plopping back down and taking a sip of his bright drink.
The dark-haired boy squealed to himself, kicking his feet and shaking his head, before taking another sip.
“This is so good!”
The bright drink was suddenly in Fugo’s face; so he wasn’t totally gone.
“Panna, you gotta try this! It’s amazing!”
Fugo’s face scrunched up a bit, the idea of cross contamination made him cringe. Seeing the albino’s face, Narancia pulled out the straw, flipping it on the reverse side, and bringing it back up to his boyfriend’s face.
“Here!”
Knowing the teen’s persistence, Fugo took the straw in his mouth and took a sip. As the drink was pulled away, Fugo was stunned that the drink wasn’t too sugary or overpowering, but just..nice. The albino turned to look at the older boy, sipping and typing on his phone. Then, he shifted and rested his head on Fugo’s shoulder.
“I know..you don’t like the parties an’ everything, Panna.” Narancia started, pausing to swallow.
“An’ even though I wanna take you to the park, or one of those fancy art exhibits you like, or maybe down to the shopping place to just bum around, or..I dunno, treat you like a prince!,” Fugo felt his heart sink. “I know you just wanna chill, so..that’s what I wanna do.”
The guilt was immediate; what Narancia said was true, and some of those things did sound nice, but..there were no drawbacks. It would be just the two of them. Right?
“Just the two of us?” Fugo covered his mouth but it was too late.
Narancia looked over at him, some of that shine missing from his eyes.
“Yeah. I wanted it to be just the two of us.”
Fugo put his head back, weighing the options in his mind. Maybe if he thought of it as another one of their dates, maybe then..He sighed.
“The park.”
“Wha?”
“We can..hang out at the park and maybe the shopping area.”
The albino couldn’t deny the change in his boyfriend’s face and energy was adorable.
“Okay! A-After we’re done here, listen, I promise I’ll treat you like you’re royalty today, Panna-”
“Don’t. Just..let’s pretend it’s just another date, okay? Nothing special.”
“But, all of our dates are special.”
Dear god, this boy could be too damn sweet sometimes.
“O-Okay. It’s special, but not..”
“Super duper birthday special?”
“..Yeah. That.”
“Okay!”
The two settled into a charged silence, both trying to finish what they had so they could get going.
“Hey. Panna.”
“Mm?”
“Do you think we could do these ‘dates’, same time every year?”
“..I’ll think about it.”
The albino looked up and saw Narancia look away but his eyes were on his piece of cake. Fugo then plucked the cookie from the piece and slid the small plate over to the other boy.
“It isn’t the best, but it’s decent.” He mumbled.
Narancia dug in and almost choked while trying to down the rest of his drink.

Later on, when he unmuted the chat and Bruno asked, ‘Did you find him?’, Narancia sent a photo of him and Fugo while they were at the park with the words,
“Yeah. We went on a little normal date.”
