1.The Sun Shined On Me
Kenma has never interested in relationships or in people in general. He would always find himself running away from them and evading human interaction with all his might. While he didn´t had any desire to interact with others, he was incredibly conscious of how people perceived him and what they thought of him, which is why he was always overanalyzing things and people, trying to predict how they would behave to act accordingly and avoid them, preventing any unnecessary trouble with this.
Today unfortunately, his lack of social abilities and his perfected skill for avoiding social interactions led him to slowly drift away from his group and now, he had lost his way in this unknown city that their team was visiting for some practice games. When he noticed, there was no one around him and he was in some deserted street. At first, he panicked and tried to find his way back, but this just made him walk a few blocks and end back up where he started. Finally, he decided to give up before he ended up wasting even more of the little energy he had. He looked around and decided to sit down on the edge of little rock wall that supported a larger metal fence that surrounded a building that was inside it. He tossed his belongings on the floor and took his phone out and started messing playing some random game to kill time while someone from his team came to find him.
He was about to clear the level he was playing when an unknown voice startled him, “What are you doing?” an energetic and bright voice called from behind him.
Kenma froze and messed up his game, causing him to lose. Then he turned around slowly and met a short boy with bright and messy orange hair, he was wearing a white t-shirt that said Karasuno High School, black shorts, and white running shoes. He had an intense aura radiating from him, he felt a monstruous amount of energy coming from this boy. Kenma felt like he was hit with direct sunlight. It was a bit scary and overwhelming; he had never felt something like this before.
The boy kept looking at him with curiosity, and when he realized he was still waiting for his answer he finally came out from his daze and admitted softly, “I´m lost.”
“You´re from out of town?” the boy asked back.
“Yeah,” said Kenma returning his attention to his phone, feeling too tired from looking at the orange haired boy.
“Is that thing fun?” he asked again excitedly, kneeling down beside Kenma.
“Not really,” he shrugged, a bit uncomfortable by the sudden closeness of another body, “I´m just passing time.”
“Are you a volleyball player?” the boy exclaimed excitedly as he jumped back up and scanned Kenma thoroughly and then pointed at the bag he had left on the floor. “Those are volleyball shoes. I´m in a volleyball club, too. My name´s Hinata Shoyo!”
The boy, whose name was revealed just now, said all this with a smile bigger than his face, excitement showing on his face. Kenma felt a wave of tiredness overcome him just from seeing how energetic Shoyo was.
“Kozume…” he whispered softly, thinking it was now time for him to introduce himself as well.
“Kozume?” Shoyo repeated leaning closer to him again, “Is that your name?”
“Kozume…” Kenma repeated again, “…Kenma.”
“Kenma!” Shoyo repeated happily, “Are you in high school? I´m a first year, you?”
The amount of questions that were thrown at him made him feel a bit dizzy, “I´m a second year,” he managed to reply tapping at his phone aggressively to try and calm himself down a little bit.
“Crap. I´m sorry, you´re older than me!” Shoyo exclaimed becoming stiff as he showed a panicked expression on his face. Kenma glanced slightly at him and found the expression on Shoyo´s face a bit amusing. He looked back at his phone and smiled a little, his shoulders relaxed a little thinking about how even Shoyo who seemed like a walking light ball could show panic as well.
“Don´t worry,” he replied trying to assure him, “I don´t really care about things like status and so.”
“Is that so?” Shoyo replied going back to the care-free overexcited being he was. “Um… do you like volleyball?
“Not really, I just do kind of do it,” Kenma said and seeing the confused expression on Shoyo he decided to elaborate a little more, “It´s not like a dislike it either but I just don´t like getting tired. My friends play so I just kind of ended up doing it too.”
When Kenma found himself talking this much with a complete stranger and giving him so much explanation about why he played volleyball he surprised himself a little bit. He didn´t even know why he even stayed and was having this conversation with this boy he didn´t know. Usually, he would have just fled from there or immersed himself in his phone to avoid having a conversation.
“I think it´ll be more fun if you get to like it,” Shoyo said bringing him out of his thoughts.
“I don´t care, I´ll only be doing it while I´m in high school anyway,” he tried to justify himself once again. Finding himself entangled by Shoyo´s subtlety forceful question that grabbed him and forced him to engage in the conversation.
“What position do you play?”
“Setter.”
“Really? You´re different from our setter, he is a little... intense” Shoyo tried to explain struggling a bit with his words and changing to make a weird expression with his face and motioning with his hands, which made Kenma laugh a bit. Then he threw his arms up in the air and declared proudly, “I´m a middle blocker.”
“Huh” Kenma muttered back in response watching Shoyo´s weird poses.
“You think it´s a bit weird?” Shoyo turned back to Kenma and asked with an embarrassed smile, “It´s a position for tall guys after all.”
“I guess, but I don´t think that,” he replied quickly to try and ease Shoyo´s worry, “When I play matches I get told stuff like 'The setter position is for the most talented player, so why him?' "
Shoyo looked at him and blinked.
“Because I´m not very athletic,” Kenma added.
“I see, so is your team good?”
“I think we´re pretty good lately,” Kenma looked at Shoyo directly in the eyes for the first time as he declared this. Leaving Shoyo speechless for a moment. He quickly collected himself and opened his mouth to ask something but was cut off by a voice that was familiar to Kenma.
“Kenma.” Said Kuro approaching them and motioning for Kenma to come to his side.
Kenma felt a little grateful seeing him but at the same time he felt a little disappointed that his chat with Shoyo was cut short, because surprisingly, he was actually starting to enjoy it and even though he felt exhausted from Shoyo´s energy, he also began to feel comfortable around him.
But knowing he would meet this boy again very soon he found his strength to get up and approach Kuro.
“See you soon, Shoyo!” the words came out with a bit more excitement than he intended, and a smile made its way to his face as he waved goodbye to the oranged hair boy who was left with a puzzled and confused expression as he watched Kenma walk away.
The games they had scheduled for that day had ended and his teammates and him were back in the room they were staying. Yamamoto was talking with Inuoka and Shibayama about some useless stuff so he shut them out immediately and immersed himself in his phone, not willing to be a part of that pointless conversation. Kuro thought the same and started organizing his things.
“Hey, Kenma. What do you think?” Yamamoto tried to drag him in their discussion about who knows what.
“I don´t really care,” he said casually shrugging off the question. Then paused a little and looked up to his teammates to add with a bright smile that he didn´t even know was there, “But, I´m kind of looking forward to it. Our match against Karasuno.”
“The Kenma who has no will to play is actually looking forward to a match?” Yamamoto exclaimed with a terrified expression.
Everyone else in the room was left speechless by Kenma´s sudden affirmation, even he was left speechless. Was really looking forward to the game, or was he looking forward to meeting Shoyo again?
The day of the game finally arrived. When Shoyo spotted Kenma, his jaw dropped and his face showed a muddled expression mixed with disbelief and surprise. Being looked at so intently like that made Kenma a bit shy and he just turned to look at the floor not knowing how to react to Shoyo´s complicated reaction. After that, Shoyo came to greet him and scolded Kenma for not telling him he was in Nekoma and finally understanding why he said he would see him later. Kenma relaxed a little bit when he realized Shoyo wasn´t mad and he was still willing to talk to Kenma.
Kenma wanted to ask something else but didn´t really know what to say. While he was struggling to come up with something they were interrupted by a bald scary looking guy from Shoyo´s team and Yamamoto, then someone else from Karasuno intercepted Shoyo and questioned why he knew Kenma, pulling him away from Kenma´s side.
Feeling discouraged for not managing to talk more with Shoyo, Kenma reluctantly followed his team inside and prepared for the game. He saw Shoyo practically glowing from the other side of the court.
Kenma quickly scanned the other members of Shoyo´s team and identified the guy who pulled Shoyo away before as Karasuno´s setter. The game began and the first thing they did was pull an insanely attack made by the setter and Shoyo. Kenma was left speechless, and a sudden rush of energy traveled through his body. Determined to fight back he suggested that they should focus on stopping Shoyo and limit his movements. He felt a bit bad by trying to do this to Shoyo, but at the same time he felt a desire to push the boy´s limits and see how he would react. He wanted to see if the excitement he felt was real and if it could last or if it was just a moment of luck.
Shoyo proved himself to be the real deal. He remained persistent even when he was shut down and kept trying again and again. He was so excited thought all the game, he was hungry for more, even when it was difficult for him to even hit the ball back, he surprised everyone on the court and made a comeback no one was expecting. He was beaming with such light, Kenma was just mesmerized, he just couldn´t help but follow his every move.
Despite his team’s effort they weren´t able to win any of the games they played during that day. However, both teams felt it was a very rewarding practice. Kenma was even a bit sad that it was time to end it, even though his muscles were screaming with pain from using them more than he ever allows to. But to see more of Shoyo, he felt it was worth it.
“Kenma!” Shoyo approached him as his team was leaving.
“Shoyo.”
“Remember you said you didn´t particularly liked volleyball before?”
“Yeah,” Kenma replied softly, feeling a bit happy because Shoyo remembered their first meeting and he even remembered what he had said.
“How did it feel to win today?” He asked with a seriousness he hadn´t seen in him before.
“Sort of… normal,” he replied not willing to compromise with other words. But he regretted the moment the words left him. He didn´t want to upset Shoyo who seemed so excited all the time.
“Then next time, I´ll make sure you are desperate,” he declared making Kenma shiver, “we´ll win, and make you say ' I´m mad ' or 'That was fun' instead of just 'sort of'.
He was practically shouting now, the determination in his face was clear. Kenma´s eyes widened in surprise at this sudden promise. When was the last time he actually had fun doing something? he couldn´t remember clearly, which is why he couldn´t resist Shoyo´s tempting proposition.
“Okay,” he accepted with a smile, “I´ll look forward to it then.”
And with that they parted ways. Kenma´s heart felt lighter with that promise of meeting again. He was excited to see what else Shoyo had to show him.
