Road to Victory

Summary:

Her ordinary life ripped asunder by her parents' divorce, Logan Mahoney has to face her first pokemon journey in a region far from her home. Despite this and the many struggles she will face along the way, this will truly be a Road to Victory.

Chapter Text

The divorce had gotten messy. Marilyn Mahoney was filing for divorce from her husband, Norman, due to his absentee practices in the lives of their two children, May and Logan. Neither party could come to an agreement that satisfied them both. The judge had ruled that their ten year old daughter, Logan, should live with Marilyn’s sister, Rebecca, for the remainder of the proceedings. So Logan had to pack up and move to Unova. It wasn’t that Logan hadn’t enjoyed visiting her aunt in the past, but this was different. She was moving two regions away from her home in Hoenn and she wasn’t sure when she’d be allowed to come back.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After the first week of adjusting, as her aunt put it, her aunt had ushered her out the door towards the professor’s lab, “I know you wanted your first journey to be in Hoenn, dear, but there’s no real reason to put it off, and you’re such an active child. A journey will do you good,” she’d said, guiding Logan to the front door of the house.
“Are you sure? What if I’m half way across Unova and the court proceedings end?” Logan asked, fiddling with the Slaking claw necklace she wore.
“You’ll have your Xtransceiver, and your parents will understand, they both took journeys too, after all.”
Logan sighed, part of her was certain that her aunt was tired of her moping and wanted Logan out of her hair, but there wasn’t anything she could really do about it, “Alright, Auntie, I’ll go talk to the professor.” Her aunt smiled and shut the door quickly behind her. Logan made her way to the professor’s lab. When she got there she knocked tentatively on the door, “Professor Juniper?” she called.
The door swung open quickly, a blonde assistant wearing a green hat stood on the other side, “Hi, there! I’m Bianca, the professor is in the middle of a call right now, but you’re welcome to come in and wait.”
Logan tightened her bandanna and stepped inside. Bianca directed her to a chair near a bookshelf, “I’ll wait here, then?”
“Yep! The professor will be with you any minute!” Bianca chirped and bustled back to her own work.
It was about ten minutes before the professor stepped out into the main portion of the lab, she smiled when she saw Logan, “Hello, you’re Rebecca’s niece, right? She mentioned you’d be by.”
“That’s right, ma’am, I’m Logan,” she placed the book she’d been reading back in its spot on the shelf, “I’m here to get my first pokemon.” She spoke with a fire in her eyes, “I’m going to become champion of Unova and then I’m going to challenge the gyms in Hoenn.”
“Well, let’s get you set up,” Professor Juniper smiled, “I’m Professor Juniper, to get the formal introductions out of the way, and you said your name was Logan, right?”
“Right. I’ve been thinking about this for about a week now, I know which pokemon I want to choose.”
“Well, as you know we have three starters available to new trainers, however, there is another trainer starting his journey at the same time as you. We like to have trainers pick their starters out of the same groups, so I’m afraid all I have left are Snivy and Tepig.”
“That’s fine, I was going to pick Tepig anyway,” Logan smiled as the small piglike pokemon trotted forward. She lifted it into her arms, “I’ll name you Boarealis. Like the Northern Lights, ‘cause you light up my life.” Boarealis gave a cry of agreement and nuzzled close to Logan’s chin. Logan laughed at the ticklish sensation.
“Now we just have to register your pokedex,” Juniper smiled as the young girl bonded with her pokemon. The computer chimes, signifying that the pokedex registration was complete, “Here you are!” Juniper chirped, “Your very own pokedex. With that, you’re ready to set out on your journey.”
Logan took the device reverently and smiled at Boarealis, “Ready,” she checked Boarealis’ pokedex entry, “..girl?” Boarealis cheered and she and Logan stepped out of the lab. They traveled through Nuvema town, stopping by Logan’s aunt’s place to bid her goodbye and pack Logan’s bag a little more thoroughly. With that they stepped out onto Route One, taking the first step on the road to victory.
