"The Moon Is Beautiful Isn't It?"

Summary:

A misunderstanding occurs between a captain and his subordinate, what else can I say? But hey, at least the moon looks nice?

Notes:

The idea for this fic came from the trope/phrase where someone says "The moon is beautiful, isn't it?" Instead of saying "I love you"

Work Text:

“The Moon is beautiful isn't it?”

Those words slip from my lips with no thought of the consequences behind the meaning of those words. I was simply enraptured by the sight of the full moon shining down upon us, accented by the billions of stars encircling it in an endless embrace. I could hear his pace come to an abrupt stop, but I don’t dare tear my eyes from the ethereal scene before me too soon. Panning my gaze to the man before me. His eyes widen, glinting like moonstones with a hint of green, lips parted ever so slightly as he gazes back at me. He’s staring at me as if I am the one who hung the moon and all the stars in the sky as if I cast away every shadow, every nightmare from this world, yet I’ve done no such thing. Wisps of hair brush against my eyelids with the tilt of my head, staring up at him through my lashes as if this change will answer my questions. Tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear, I dart my tongue out to wet my lips, his eyes quickly following the motion, before parting them, a question bubbling up in my throat.

“Captain…?”

The voice doesn’t feel as though it came from me, even though I’m the one who spoke. It sounded soft, meek, nothing that I was used to when speaking to him. Taking a step towards me, his lips quirked upwards in that near smug smile he does when he’s teasing one of his squad members. The corners of his eyes crinkle, eyes gleaming with a mix of emotions. It’s much softer than that mischievous look he gets when he’s usually up to something. I can’t quite place the soft look he’s got as he comes closer. His movements are smooth and fluid, a stark contrast to how he usually portrays himself. He reaches me quickly, smiling down at me as he lifts his hand towards me. His large fingers brush my face so soft, you would think he was touching something that could shatter with just a look. My fingers twitched by my side, unfamiliar with such a gesture. I didn’t think that kind of softness was possible in people like us. I can feel heat flushing my face with his touch that is filled with such care.

“Well, that certainly wasn’t what I was expecting”

His voice which was normally smooth and alight with joy held something else within it. He almost sounded winded, as if he had been training for some time.

“My sweet little [Y/N] surprising me with such a poetic romantic gesture. I feel so blessed”

While the joking tone spilled from his lips, his other gestures seemed to contradict such tone. His hands caressed my face, fingers brushing any stray hairs back. Eyes alight with that unknown emotion gazed down upon me as if trying to pull the answer of what he’s looking for from my own. As the words finally registered in my mind, slowed down by the distraction that is him, my brows quirked up as my confusion at his statement registered. Romantic? I mean I suppose many could see such a view as romantic based on it’s ethereal beauty, but what did that have to do with anything? A puff of air escapes my lips as I divert my eyes towards the moon and subsequently away from the view before me. While he is quite the sight, prolonged eye contact in this position is not doing my face any favors. His fingers create a cool feeling against my heated cheeks. He tuts and gently turns my head, drawing my gaze back to him with the action.

“Now, now, don’t get all shy on me now. It was quite the gesture, and planning it during such a sight,"

His gaze flickers towards the moon before abandoning it to take in my reddened face before him, lips curling in a larger grin.

“Though I must say I rather gaze upon this view before me. Absolutely enchanting”

The last of his words come out almost breathless and I just can’t look away. My mind is blanking at the compliment. Tilting my face up, I can feel his hands sliding along my face, ever so gently, his fingers curling into my hair. The distance shrank between us, lips parting in shock at what was occurring. My hands reach up, fingers gently twisting into the sleeves of his captain’s haori.

“I can’t just leave such a proclamation from my cute subordinate unanswered, now can I?”

Those words brushed against my lips before his lips did as his eyes slid shut. I could feel the slightest pressure against my lips, my eyes widening as the kiss finally registers. I feel like my body is frozen, as his lips press against mine. Quiet tingles of electricity fizzle throughout my body as he gently presses further into me. My mind is moving too fast for me to even grasp the thoughts racing by. How do I kiss back? Do I kiss back? Why is he even kissing me? Before I can even reciprocate, he begins to pull away. Our lips make this embarrassingly soft, wet noise as they separate, and his eyes flutter open as he takes in the sight of me. A chuckle rumbles through him, hands slightly trembling against me.

“What? Did you think I was gonna reject you?”

His words are light, teasing. As if he didn’t just kiss me and send my body into this weird tingling mess. My lips tremble as I fumble with words, eyes fluttering as my gaze drifts everywhere but him.

“Why did you…uh, kiss me?”

My cheeks burn as my voice becomes a whisper as if speaking of the kiss wasn’t allowed. He tilted his head, gaze not wavering from me once as his hands dropped from my face to instead curl around my waist. Shifting my weight from side to side, my gaze hesitantly return to him, taking in the near faint blush that dusted his cheeks. It slightly deepens with my gaze, becoming more apparent under the moon's gaze dousing us both in light.

“Why wouldn’t I after you confessed to me?”

While his words are light, my lips purse before pulling into a flat line. Confess? When did I ever? Upon echoing my thoughts, confusion swirls in his eyes as the corner of his smile lifts, mirroring his emotions.

“What you said earlier? How the moon looked beautiful?”

Despite this clarification, I was still confused. Glancing at the moon, I look back at him as my brows furrow.

“Yeah… because I thought the moon made the sky and stuff look nice?”

The words trail off as I watch realization bloom on his face, along with that faint pink hue becoming a dark red. He sputters for a moment, hands releasing my waist as he takes a step back, hands flapping as if he’s just committed an atrocious act. My hands slip from his sleeves to hang in the air before me.

“You, you weren’t confessing your love for me?”

My face which had slightly cooled has returned to its fiery temperature from before. Mouth agape, I stared at my captain before me. He really thought I was just going to confess to him out of the blue? Wait, my eyes widen to mimic his, he knew I had feelings for him. I cover my face with my hands, dropping to squat as I let out a shaky exhale, an airy laugh spilling from my lips. I can’t believe such a ridiculous thing has actually happened. Of course, it has. Only me. I mentally groan at the ridiculous circumstances as I feel him approach me, squatting before me. His warm hands envelop mine, fingers curling around mine to gently pry them away from my face. Huffing, I hesitantly raise my head to meet his gaze as his hands gently hold mine. That typical aloof grin his back on his face, eyes glinting in the overhanging moon as he shuffles closer until our knees bump nearly knocking me off balance. His mouth opens before I can even manage any words.

“Well, I suppose I should take responsibility huh?"

This man I swear.
