It was raining.
Of course it was raining!
Tommy cursed under his breath as the rain poured down outside the window. Final period of the day was supposed to make him feel better- but instead the world hated him and decided to make it rain. Of course he just didn’t check the weather app, and now he was stuck without an umbrella.
Turning his attention back to the classroom he noticed a few other students looking out the windows with a range of emotions. Some upset, some indifferent, and some plain excited. He couldn’t understand that excitement, but he did know one of the people with that expression.
His friend Tubbo was staring out the window with wonder in his eyes. A few moments of staring later, and Tubbo was glancing back at Tommy with a grin that could only be said as excitement.
The excitement almost surprised him if it weren't for the fact Tubbo was easily excited. Instead of his usual reaction of grinning back or playing along, the blond simply turned his head away to stare back at the downpour. Earning him a concerned frown from the shorter that he didn't see.
Another 40 minutes later of his boring english class and the teen was out. Of course with his mood soured he could barely feel happy about it. Especially with what would come next.
Laughter tugged in the back of his mind, the image of umbrellas and wet shoes clogged his senses for a moment. A moment long enough for Tubbo to sneak up on the boy. A tug on Tommy’s shoulders that quickly turned into the brunette jumping up slightly on his shoulders.
“gAH- TUBBo YOU BITC-” Tommy cursed loudly in surprise as he stumbled backward. His breath hitching for only a moment before turning to face the shorter with a scowl. “What the absolute fuck Tubbo?”
Tubbo gave an unapologetic grin and simply tilted his head at the taller boy, “Not sorry boss man! Anyway- you good dude? You seem so out of it- I mean I barely ever actually scare yoU! And you just looked depressing during class.” Tubbo pointed out very annoyingly, only really annoying since Tommy didn't want to answer, and Tommy glared back.
Under his breath he cursed out again before turning back to Tubbo and rolling his eyes, “Yeah I’m fine big man- Just the rain y'know?” Of course it was technically true- but at the same time an oversimplification of why he hated it.
Tubbo glanced at Tommy with uncertainty. While Tommy didn’t normally lie Tommy DID normally lie about being hurt or his feelings. The brunette instead nodded his head in confirmation. “You sure Tommy? Doesn’t seem like the rain to bring you down this much!”
Tommy simply shook his head and plastered on a grin. He hummed a bit under his breath and bumped shoulders with the smaller. “It’s fine Tubs! Let’s just go already- you trying to get us stuck in the building or something y’know?”
Tubbo simply rolled his eyes, bumping Tommy back. The two walked through the crowded hallways of highschool. Along the way Tommy saw people pointing out the windows, passing umbrellas, and putting on raincoats. Clearly everyone else had checked the weather app today.
Tommy grumbled to himself a frown tugging at his mouth. Tubbo shot him another worried glance that got unnoticed again. Finally the two got to the lockers and started grabbing their books. Tubbo ran over to Ranboo who was leaning against a wall with Purpled. Slower Tommy walked after Tubbo.
The two others seemed to notice instantly the off mood. Tommy barely made any acknowledgment of the two besides a ‘hey’. Ranboo glanced at Tubbo who sighed and shook his head. Purpled leaned back against the wall turning to Tommy.
“Yo Tommy- You look like shit.”
True to normal Purpled fashion- he didn’t outright ask if Tommy was good. Preferring to insult him instead. Tommy scoffed at Purpled, giving him a light shove.
“She the hell up OrAngE!” Tommy growled at Purpled using the nickname made to annoy the purple lover. Purpled simply rolled his eyes and nudged him slightly. Neither of the two were remotely touchy so the light nudge came as a surprise to the taller blond. Glancing to the other sharply for a moment. He huffed. “I’m just not a fan of the rain is all you fucker!”
Again an oversimplification- but technically true. Purpled simply hummed out unbelievingly. The blond pushed off from the wall holding his umbrella, you guessed it purple, and started walking before he turned to stare at the others. “I’m going to find Punz.” Before continuing to walk away.
Tommy shrugged it off and started walking away only to be stopped by the tug of a hand. He turned to look behind him, and saw Tubbo grabbing his arm with a worried look. Ranboo stood behind him with a matching look. Tommy frowned slightly confused.
“You’d tell us if something was wrong right Tommy?” Tubbo spoke carefully. His voice wavered with a bit of uncertainty. Ranboo put his hand on Tubbo’s shoulder as if in warning. Tommy simply scoffed to Tubbo.
“Of course I would Bee boy! Trust me- I’m always the most trustworthy.” Tommy flashed Tubbo a grin- completely lying obviously. Tubbo didn't look at ALL convinced, but did let go. WIth that Tommy waved a hand at the two and walked towards the doors.
Entering out onto the plaza of the school he stared at the raining sky. He stood under the ledge that sheltered the plaza. He hummed under his breath a bit before letting out a breath. Slowly memories replayed in the boy's head.
~Start of flashback~
Tommy was 12 years old at the time. About 7th grade when it happened. He loved his friends a lot- Shroud, Henry, and Clemantine. The 4 of them were inseparable! At least he was under that impression-
It was a friday when the rain started. Last period class in math. Shroud sat in the seat in front of Tommy, and Tommy started kicking the back of Shroud’s chair trying to get his attention. Shroud eventually turned around with an annoyed glare. Tommy didn’t seem phased- he didn’t even realize the other was mad. He started wildly pointing out the window at the rain.
Shroud ignored him and turned around back to the lesson. Tommy frowned slightly confused, but instead of overthinking he went back to staring at the rain. Tapping against the glass a bit he watched the rain race down the window.
After the bell finally rang Tommy jumped out of his seat. Earning a small yell from the teacher who evidently was ignored. The blond raced to stand by the taller Shroud. He grinned excitedly and started rambling on about the rain.
When Tommy was a child the rain was magical. He often prayed for the rain to come. It was a wonderful day when the rain came- he always raced around in the puddles with Wilbur. Techno never joined in simply watching from the porch with their Mom and Dad.
Shroud ignored the younger blond simply walking forward, but that didn’t stop the rambling. A few minutes of that and the two had found Henry and Clemantine. Both of which were ready to leave. Shroud walked slightly faster seeing the two- and Tommy followed suit.
Clementine perked up seeing them, and smiled carefully. Henry hadn’t looked up yet- the brunette was still staring at his phone. The ginger haired girl leaned back against her locker waiting for the two to pack up.
While grabbing his stuff Tommy noticed his lack of an umbrella. With a quick glance at the others he saw all three did however have one. In that case Tommy didn’t see the reason to find one. He could just ask to share with them.
The 4 kids walked out to the plaza of the school and stared at the rain for a moment. The older 3 opened up their umbrellas before glancing down at Tommy who hadn’t moved. He shrugged a bit.
“Uh- I didn’t bring an umbrella.”
He spoke glancing up at the umbrellas held by the 3. An awkward moment passed before Shroud scoffed and simply started walking away.
“Whatever dude- I couldn’t care less. Go beg someone for an umbrella-”
Tommy’s eyes widened with surprise- Shroud could be blunt, but he was never that mean before- or had he been? Tommy couldn’t understand. He simply froze for a moment. Glancing between Clemantine and Henry to Shroud quickly. Hoping it wasn't real- that Shroud was just joking. But instead of turning around the raven haired boy just kept walking.
Clementine shifted uncomfortably Henry staring at the space Shroud had just been. Instead of offering to walk with Tommy- or tell him Shroud was just joking she sighed and shook her head.
“Sorry Tommy- but just…go find someone else? I don’t really want to deal with you so close- I don’t mean to be rude. But- Ah…I’m just going to go.”
She quickly turned around, opening her umbrella again and starting to run after Shroud. After a few moments Henry started walking away as well.
“Yeah- i’m gunna go with them. Uh- good luck I guess…”
Henry didn’t bother waving as he caught up with the two others. Tommy stared after them. Red, Orange, and Green umbrellas bright against the gray rainy sky. He felt his feet give out, and the next moment he was on the ground. His knees hurt from falling on the concrete, but he didn't care.
Tears streamed down the boy's face as he watched. Questions of why and why me rushed through his head. The blond was aware he could be annoying- but they just left him? All alone? He wailed out in the rain. He cried and cried there until Wilbur had found him. His family had driven to the school worried when the boy wasn’t home.
After that day he grew apart from his 3 “friends”. He stopped playing in the rain after that. His love for the rain fizzled out into hatred.
~End~
He shivered, snapping out of the memory. He stared angrily at the rain in front of him. He was honestly just waiting for his friends to suddenly walk past him- leave him behind again. It was inevitable. The rain just brought bad news to the boy.
He stared for a while- wondering how to get home without being too wet. He was halfway to just walking out and committing to it. No umbrella? He wasn’t getting home dry then.
Suddenly Tommy was pushed forward slightly, and he stumbled. Glancing back behind him he saw his 3 friends. Tubbo, Ranboo, and Purpled all stood holding umbrellas. Tommy’s stomach began to sink at the sight of them.
“Cmon! We’re gunna be late if we don’t go nowwwww!” Tubbp yelled running out in front of the group before turning around. His green umbrella was littered with bees. Matching the boy perfectly. The brunette beckoned for the 3 to follow after him.
Ranboo opened his own umbrella, black and white with red and green spots, before joining Tubbo out in the rain. Only Purpled was left besides Tommy. A simple glance at Tommy told the blond all he needed to know.
“You don’t have an umbrella do you?”
Tommy froze slightly glaring over to Purpled. Of course he didn’t- but he was hoping to have avoided the conversation for longer. He simply shrugged and looked away from the purple lover.
“So what bitch? Got something so say about it-”
Wrong questions- Tommy closed his eyes tightly waiting for the comment. For the “Go find someone else” or the “Too bad” for them to leave him there in the rain again. A strange look was given by Purpled, and once again it wasn’t seen by Tommy.
“Well you can sh-”
“YOU CAN GO WITH ME!”
Tubbo cut Purpled off. Purpled glared a bit at Tubbo but ultimately let it go. Ranboo perked up slightly and shifted to hold out his umbrella to Tommy.
“Or you can share with me- My umbrella is pretty big- should be able to hold both of us! Plus You’d have to hold Tubbo’s since he's so shor- OW!” Ranboo was cut off with a yelp as Tubbo kicked him in the shin angrily. A moment of glaring later he grinned back at Tommy.
“Cmon! Share with me! Wouldn’t want you to get stuck in the rain!”
Tommy stood shocked. Not at all having expected the offer. After all- he loved his friends- and wouldn’t call them fake ever! But at the same time- the fear was evident. He didn’t expect them to care. Without realizing it tears started pouring down his face.
“HU-huh- ? Tommy, are you okay- Did we say something wrong?”
“Tommy? Dude you good-?”
“T-Tommy? What's wrong-”
All 3 started panicking. The trio got closer to Tommy who simply kept crying. He began rubbing at his eyes to stop the tears before shaking his head. Waving a hand to the 3 as if trying to calm them. Which didn’t exactly help since he was still crying.
“I- I- I’m fine! I’m just- just happy-” Tommy spoke through the sobs and tears. Purped slighted slightly and started rubbing Tommy’s back.
“Cmon Tommy. Let's head out- before you get any more wet.”
Tubbo glared at Purpled lightly before grabbing Tommy and pulling him under the green umbrella with him. The brunette ran out into the rain with the blue-eyed teen. He grinned at Tommy before gesturing to the others to follow. Ranboo and Purpled eventually joined the duo and the 4 began walking.
Tommy stopped crying as they walked and leaned into Tubbo under the umbrella. The 4 teens began to bicker and chat through the rain. Ranboo talking about his plans to make Spaghetti Cupcakes- as the others ridiculed them. Purpled lecturing them onn bedwar strategies, and Tubbo complaining about English class as every other day went.
Tommy felt his heart warm up slowly- the tears dry despite the rain around him. Tommy decided that maybe- the rain wasn’t all that bad. He simply smiled while walking under the umbrellas of his friends. Colorful blotches of color that brightened up the area. Colors of purple, green, black and white, and a touch of red if you looked close.
