Summary:

Journalists are meant to be mostly unbiased. Personal articles can often be seen as unprofessional. So, this puts Sunwoo in quite the unfortunate situation. He just wanted to write articles reporting how bad Juyeon's girlfriend was. But now, he's uncovered some feelings as well. An absolute journalistic no-no.

Notes:

Did not re-read this more than three times so, I'm sorry for any mistakes. I'll read again soon and fix anything that I notice.
Thank you so much for checking out this story! It was genuinely so fun to write. I'm excited to post it!

“Breaking: Man Takes His Girlfriend to His Best Friend’s Favorite Arcade”

By. Kim Sunwoo

Konkuk University

ksunwoo2000@*******.com

On Tuesday afternoon, a man took his girlfriend to his best friend’s favorite arcade, Spot Game Hall. His best friend saw the event take place without his knowledge.

According to an arcade employee, Choi Chanhee, they arrived at the scene at 5 p.m. The man, identified as college sophomore, Lee Juyeon, wore a jean jacket with colorful patches. Which he later gave to his girlfriend.

“I don’t know if he said anything about you– Sunwoo, would you just– Get that microphone out of my face!” Choi says to our sources.

There is currently limited information on the event. We will keep you, our dear readers, updated on the outcomes.

—----

Sunwoo can’t figure out if he should be relieved or upset when he sees Juyeon leaning against a pillar, waiting for him to finish class.

It’s all picturesque with the trees casting pretty shades over him. He’s reading a poetry book because, of course he is, the fucking nerd. And Sunwoo could bet, any passersby would assume he’s the lead role. Of what? Nobody knows.

But he’s it.

Currently, he’s playing the lead role of Sunwoo’s dilemma: Am I Losing My BFF to His Girlfriend?

Juyeon has barely contacted Sunwoo in the past few weeks. Which has not been an easy transition. Considering they usually have sleepovers in their dorms like middle schoolers.

Now, if Sunwoo wants him to come over, Juyeon’s girlfriend will just happen to be spending the night. Which, for the lack of a better word ( or lack of energy to think of one ), sucks.

Once Juyeon spots him, he pushes himself off the pillar and walks his way. “How was class?” He asks, smiling, eyes crinkling up.

It’s genuine. Which just proves Sunwoo’s point that he’s absolutely oblivious. “Fine.” He tells him, walking past.

Juyeon catches up easily. His legs clearly longer. “That’s good! Hey, I was wondering if you want to go see a movie at the theater tonight?”

Sunwoo stops in his tracks, “You want to hang out?”

Juyeon lifts his book to shield his hair from the wind, “Well yeah? They are showing an indie movie I’ve been wanting to see for a while now! I know it’s not really your thing but–”

“That sounds nice, actually. Let’s do it.”

Juyeon slaps Sunwoo’s back in excitement. “Great! Sunhee is coming too! We’ll sneak in snacks like the old days, hm?”

“Sunhee is going?”

Juyeon nods. A big dopey smile on his face. Sunwoo doesn’t try to hide his annoyance, “Should be fun.”

Juyeon, of course, doesn’t even notice. “I know right!” He cheers, practically skipping, “Well, I need to get to class but I’ll see you later.”

He waves before scurrying off, into the business building. Within seconds he’d be out of Sunwoo’s sights and lost in the several floors of vertical cement. No way for him to hear Sunwoo’s arguments.

Sunhee? She tends to talk during movies. Maybe she shouldn’t come.

Sunhee? She doesn’t like cherry cola like we do. Probably won’t like any of our snacks for that matter. Maybe she should just stay home?

Sunhee? Haha. Yeah. No.

“Sunhee.” Sunwoo grits under his breath.

To his dismay, she is practically perfect past all of those earlier notes. She has 4.2 GPA, volunteers every weekend at animal shelters, a beauty pageant titleholder, etc.

And as much as Sunwoo complains. She has been nothing but sweet to him. The thing is… She’s stealing his best friend away.

And that’s a no-go.

“Breaking: Girlfriend Falls Asleep During Movie”

By. Kim Sunwoo

Konkuk University

ksunwoo2000@*******.com

On Wednesday night, college student, Lee Juyeon, found his girlfriend asleep in the theater. Reports say that she’d only made it through ten minutes before passing out.

After interviewing Lee, he had this to say “I don’t know, Sunwoo. I was really excited to watch this with her. It had cute animals and everything, I figured she’d like it. I guess I was wrong.”

The girlfriend, Doh Sunhee, says “I don’t understand how he watches this stuff. It’s so boring. But if he likes it then I guess I should do better.”

After the incident, Lee still texts his girlfriend a goodnight message.

We will be back later with more updates.

———-

Juyeon finds Sunwoo in the library after a week of not calling, texting, emailing, or breathing in his general direction. He’s surprised he remembers his habits at all.

“Did you get an invite yet?” Juyeon slides into the seat across from Sunwoo.

The ‘yet’ is a kind way to word it. Juyeon still thinks Sunwoo is on the same social level as he is. “No, I haven’t. What is it?” He answers simply, continuing to take his journalistic style quiz.

Juyeon perches his chin on the edge of Sunwoo’s laptop screen, “Eric’s party! Are you going to go?”

Sunwoo notices for the Nth time, how cheery Juyeon has been since his relationship began. Always speaking in tips and peaks. The sound whistling through his teeth, spread through a smile. “I don’t know, I’m pretty busy this week.” Sunwoo mumbles, feeling guilty for pushing this aside.

“Oh,” Juyeon sombers, “I was thinking of going but, I guess I’ll just stay in.”

Sunwoo frowns at this, “Just because I’m not going doesn’t mean you don’t have to? You should go. It’ll be good for you to take a break.”

“It’d be good for you to take a break too.” Juyeon slowly starts to shut the laptop screen.

But Sunwoo slaps his hand away, “Stop that! I’m taking a quiz! You’re going to get points docked off, you dork!”

Juyeon retreats his hand to his chest before laughing, “Sorry about that.”

Sunwoo shakes his head but smiles anyway. Juyeon keeps talking while he clicks away, “I just miss you. It’s been a while since we’ve hung out.”

Sunwoo wants to retort with a ‘whose fault is that?’ But then he sees how sad Juyeon really looks.

Really, Sunwoo can’t let him take all the blame. Even if Juyeon is busy with Sunhee, Sunwoo has let his pettiness get the better of him. The times where Juyeon does offer for them to hang out, Sunwoo declines. Thinking it’ll prove a point.

It won’t.

Because why would Juyeon expect Sunwoo to be so cold towards him. The one who has been stuck to his side since their teens. It doesn’t make any sense and Sunwoo realizes he should be grateful it doesn’t.

He sighs, pushing all of the assignments to the back of his mind, “Okay, I’ll go.”

Juyeon excitedly cheers, causing a passing librarian to shush him. He bows in apology before peeking over to Sunwoo with a smile. “It’ll be so much fun, I promise.”

Sunwoo waits for mention of Sunhee but there is none. He finds solace in that.

“Breaking: Best Friend Late to Picking Up His Best Friend”

By. Kim Sunwoo

Konkuk University

ksunwoo2000@*******.com

On Saturday Night, college student, Lee Juyeon, is late to picking up his best friend, Kim Sunwoo. They are supposed to attend a party together but Lee is late by half an hour.

“I’ve tried calling and texting him but there’s no response. I’m starting to get worried.” Kim says.

Kim goes to the extent to message Lee’s girlfriend, Doh Sunhee, as well. No response has been heard yet.

Kim is dressed in a standard party outfit and says he is hopeful that his best friend will eventually show.

We will keep you updated.

————

“I’m so sorry. Sunhee needed help setting things up for an event. She started a whole organization after she won that pageant…I’m rambling.” Juyeon apologizes, a prominent bead of sweat rolling down his face.

Just pushing the fact that he ran up to Sunwoo’s dorm. He doesn’t pass the threshold. Which hurts Sunwoo’s feelings a bit.

Juyeon used to just barge in without any notice. So, this hesitance isn’t normal.

But Sunwoo won’t complain. They are finally hanging out ( Sunhee-less as well ) and he doesn’t want to ruin the night. “No worries, you’re not that late.” Sunwoo reassures him.

Juyeon’s foot is halfway into Sunwoo’s dorm now. “I really am late but I’m ready to go if you are?” He smiles sheepishly.

Suwoo nods and they leave for the party. ( On the way to the car, Sunwoo finally notices that Juyeon is in a crop top. The cool weather suddenly becomes increasingly hot. )

When they arrive at the party, Sunwoo has to push through several couples making-out to reach the front door. They make it and Juyeon lets go of Sunwoo’s jacket. The music is loud so Juyeon leans to Sunwoo’s ear, “I’ll stay sober tonight so, if you want to drink, feel free!”

Sunwoo has clearly left his social toolkit at home. So, he will definitely be drinking, if only to find a way to start a conversation.

They sit on stools at the kitchen counter. Sunwoo grabs for something brightly colored. It’ll probably taste syrupy and like fizzy soda. Not like drinking pure rubbing alcohol.

Juyeon laughs at him, “You still drink the same. Are you sure you don’t want something stronger than that?”

Sunwoo rolls his eyes, “The taste of whiskey ruins my night, so no thanks.”

He throws his head back when he drinks from the bottle. Which makes Juyeon laugh even more, considering it’s the alcoholic equivalent to Kool-Aid.

Sunwoo watches the feeling settle onto Juyeon. He relaxes and smiles at him. “I know I’ve said this before but, it’s nice hanging out.” Juyeon says, resting his chin on his hand.

“Just us?” Sunwoo tries, hoping his face doesn’t betray him.

Juyeon’s eyes widen a bit before returning to their usual crescents, “Yeah. Just us.”

It makes Sunwoo feel at ease. Knowing that Juyeon has missed this as much as he did. That he still had a place in his life. “Then let’s do it more often?”

Juyeon nods eagerly, “Of course! One of my block courses ended, so I should have more free-time now.”

Sunwoo wants to say, you know that’s not what I meant, you know who takes up your time . But he doesn’t want to start an argument. Truthfully, there’s no reason to. Juyeon is happy. If Sunhee makes him that way then, maybe Sunwoo should learn to accept that. Appreciate it, even.

He pushes the notion away and tries to enjoy the night. Which turns out to be easier than he thought.

Juyeon and him get roped into a game of beer pong ( where they hesitantly replace beer with sparkling water for Juyeon. ) It’s unfair for the other team but Sunwoo argues that sparkling water burns more than alcohol. Juyeon backs him up on it and they become the most annoying people at the party.

He loves that.

Juyeon stops Sunwoo from parking next to the snack table, taking him around to meet new faces. Sunwoo can’t grasp how Juyeon remembers all of the names.

Kim Younghoon. Ju Haknyeon. Ji Changmin. Lee Sangyeon. He wonders how close to Juyeon they are.

He wonders if Juyeon ever talks about Sunwoo to them.

He sort of gets an answer when they talk with Eric, who Sunwoo only knows from one class they took last semester. When Juyeon reminds him, Eric’s eyes light up. “Oh, so you’re the famous Kim Sunwoo!”

Sunwoo looks to Juyeon for more of an explanation. All he receives is Juyeon awkwardly rubbing his neck. “Famous?” Sunwoo asks Eric.

“Famous. You have been in most of Juyeon’s life stories.” Eric says, sipping his drink.

Juyeon nods, “Well, you have basically been there my entire life.”

“Exactly. Don’t forget that.”

Juyeon laughs through his smile. Why is Juyeon laughing at him? That was meant to be taken seriously. “By the way, where is Sunhee?” Eric knocks against Juyeon’s arm, like they have some kind of inside joke.

Sunwoo knows who Sunhee is too.

Juyeon shrugs, smile dropping, “She doesn’t really come to these parties. She says it won’t look good on her record.”

“Who is taking notes on how many parties Doh Sunhee goes to?” Eric lets out a pfft .

Sunwoo tries to mimic the sound but only silently puffs out some air. It makes Juyeon laugh, again. “Sunhee just thinks she has more important things to be focusing on.” Juyeon explains in place for her.

“Oh, so she’s just better than the rest of us because she studies . Alrighty then.” Eric quips, moving to Sunwoo’s side.

They both frown at a defenseless Juyeon. “You know that's not what I meant.”

Eric shakes his head, “No, we understand just fine. If you don’t want us just say so.”

They both stomp their feet like toddlers before giggling. Juyeon lightens up when he realizes they’re just joking around. He hooks his arm around Sunwoo’s shoulders, pulling him to his side, “Frankly, Eric, you’re a headache. I wouldn’t mind. Plus, Sunwoo wouldn’t leave me just because of a girl. Right, Sunny?”

Sunwoo’s lips pull tightly when he looks up at Juyeon. His eyes are playfully awaiting his answer. The end to this back-and-forth they have going on. It’s all a joke , Sunwoo tries to remind himself but all he says is a weak, “ Right .”

Eric calls them both assholes and Juyeon chases him down to keep bothering him. It would normally be the other way around. People usually poke fun at Juyeon, in a friendly way, of course.

Juyeon is so mischievous tonight. It almost feels staged. But Sunhee is not around.

Sunwoo wonders who is causing it.

He realizes it’s really not Sunhee when Juyeon takes her call. Sunwoo watches him through the glass door. Juyeon’s throat tightens when he speaks. Sunwoo doesn’t ever hear Juyeon raise his voice. Never stressed like this.

But when Juyeon comes back in, he softly smiles and rejoins the conversation.

Maybe Sunwoo should start paying more attention. So, he tries to put the plan into action. When Juyeon shivers from the cold, Sunwoo hands him his jacket.

Juyeon freezes, “I’m fine, really. You should wear it.”

“No, I gave it to you for a reason. Look at you, you’re shaking.” Sunwoo pushes the jacket to Juyeon’s chest.

Juyeon’s hands come up to take it. His face blank as he stands and stares at Sunwoo. It makes Sunwoo’s stomach twist for some reason.

Eventually, the look becomes so piercing that Sunwoo has to turn away. Shoving his hands in his jean pockets like nothing happened. “Thanks.” Juyeon smiles after a moment, sliding the jacket on.

It’s a bit small on him but it does the job nonetheless.

Sunwoo doesn’t remind him to return it when Juyeon drops him off.

“Breaking: Best Friend Stuck on Bake Sale Duty”

By. Kim Sunwoo

Konkuk University

ksunwoo2000@*******.com

This afternoon, Lee Juyeon, best friend of Kim Sunwoo, was spotted heading a bake sale. He is not associated with the organization running the event.

A passing student, Shin Ryujin, says “I don’t know why he’s there but these cupcakes are soooo good. You have to try it, here just take a bite. Oh, come on! You have to be hungry while walking around interviewing strangers.”

Our sources on the scene can confirm, the cupcakes were so good.

It is still unconfirmed as to why Lee is at the bake sale. We will return with more information.

—----

Sunwoo finally reaches the front of the line. Juyeon looks like a mess, eyes blown wide, legs bouncing uncontrollably. Even as a social butterfly, Juyeon is not equipped to deal with this many people. “Sunwoo! Hey! Are you here to buy something?” Juyeon beams, spreading his arms out to showcase the pastries.

“Actually, can I get a cupcake with a side of what are you doing here ? Last I checked, you never signed up for a sorority?”

Juyeon answers while packaging a vanilla cupcake, no need to ask what flavor Sunwoo wants, “Sunhee had to go deal with something so she asked me to take over. It’s been a little while though…I'm starting to worry.”

A guy behind Sunwoo beckons him to hurry up but Sunwoo ignores him. “How long?”

Juyeon gives him the bag, “Hm, maybe around an hour now?”

“An hour?! What did she say she needed to do?”

“I think she needed to return a book.” Juyeon straightens one of the decorations.

Sunwoo does not have a good feeling about this. “Because library trips totally take that long…”

He regrets it as soon as it leaves his mouth. Sunhee makes Juyeon happy , he reminds himself. Luckily, Juyeon doesn’t understand the underlying accusation, and simply shrugs.

Sunwoo takes an angry bite of his cupcake, “Next time don’t let her pressure you into these things. You have stuff to do too!”

Juyeon giggles at him which was not the reaction he expected. “Why are you laughing, I’m serious, Juyeon.”

His friend shakes his head fondly, “Yeah, I know. You just have some icing over here.”

He points under his lip to help Sunwoo mirror his wipe. Apparently, he misses though because Juyeon just shakes his head. “Here.” Juyeon says, leaning over the table.

His thumb glides under Sunwoo’s lip, still tugging the skin with it. Even when Juyeon’s finger leaves, Sunwoo feels its weight. “If I have other plans, I won’t. I promise.” Juyeon responds to Sunwoo’s earlier rant.

“Good. That’s good.” He replies, a bit dazed.

Another person shouts that he’s holding up the line. So, he makes the sudden decision to sit beside Juyeon. “What are you doing?” Juyeon questions.

“Helping you until she gets back.” He replies nonchalantly before turning to a customer.

He feels Juyeon’s eyes linger for a moment longer before going back to business.

Just like his thumb, Sunwoo still feels it when it’s gone.

“Breaking: College Student Prepares a Grandiose Dance Proposal”

By. Kim Sunwoo

Konkuk University

ksunwoo2000@*******.com

On Monday morning, college student, Lee Juyeon demonstrates a dance proposal for his girlfriend. The university planned a school-wide dance, welcoming winter.

Lee calls for the university’s marching band, a large portion of flower petals, and a sign reading ‘ will you be my Sunshine at the winter dance ?’

His girlfriend accepts the proposal and they share a hug. The girlfriend, Doh Sunhee, says “It was everything I could have ever wanted! He knows me so well.”

Kim Sunwoo, a friend of Lee Juyeon, correction: best friend , says “It was cute, I guess. But I thought the sun-related nicknames were reserved for me. It’s whatever.”

Lee was overjoyed with the outcome and a photography student captured photos of it.

Lee says “I have no words to describe how I feel. This is such a special moment for us!”

A happy ending. No updates needed.

—----

Sunwoo is still picking up synthetic flower petals when Juyeon approaches him. He kneels on the ground, wearing a wide grin. The uncontrollable kind that rises his whole face along with it. Juyeon grabs a few petals, “I can’t believe that worked out perfectly, I thought something would go wrong.”

“Wouldn’t want that. It’s got to be flawless for Miss. Perfect herself.” Sunwoo says blankly.

He feels mean afterward. Juyeon laughs though, “Yeah, honestly, if one thing went wrong she might’ve not said yes.”

Sunwoo raises an eyebrow, “What?”

Juyeon looks up at him, mouth twisting a bit. “I mean, she probably would’ve told me to try again once I thought of something better.” He shrugs.

Maybe Sunwoo doesn’t know Sunhee as well as he thought. He was just projecting his anger onto her earlier… He never thought she’d actually be that way. “Really?”

“Yeah.” Juyeon sighs but then shakes it off, smiling again, “But it went perfectly. It’s okay.”

He meets Sunwoo’s eyes, “I’m really so happy, I’ve never felt this way before.”

It’s in that moment when Sunwoo feels it. As Juyeon walks away, a plastic bag full of petals ballooning behind him. It’s clear.

Sunwoo feels his chest tighten, like his ribs are going to crush around his lungs. No matter how much he breathes, or how far he pulls his shoulder’s back, it doesn’t help. He’s stuck with rubbing his palm against where his heart is. It hurts so fucking bad.

But he continues to finish picking up petals that’ve been thrown in celebration. His fingers sting as he touches them.

There is a laugh in the distance from Sunhee. She bats her eyelashes up at Juyeon, who probably said something charming.

She sits on the same bench she has this whole time. Watching Juyeon’s friends and other students pick up the petals. While she gets to wear a winner’s smile. Proud of what she has.

She should be. She really should be.

“Breaking: College Couple Wins Winter Queen and King by a Landslide”

By. Kim Sunwoo

Konkuk University

ksunwoo2000@*******.com

Tonight, a college couple wins their university’s winter queen and king with every single vote. No other contestant received student votes.

The couple is made up of Lee Juyeon and Doh Sunhee, sophomores at Konkuk University. They both have yet to say their thank you speeches. It is said to take place near the end of the night.

Doh says “I’m so thankful to those who supported us! It’s a dream come true! This crown suits me well, right?”

Lee says “Well, that was unexpected. Thank you so much! We are all winners tonight though! Finally, a break from the exams, hm?”

The title doesn’t come with any responsibilities. It is simply a fun event prize.

We will be back with more updates.

—-----

Juyeon dances with a small crowd. Or tries to.

His arms are stiff in the air, rotating in circles as he bounces his feet. A carefree smile on his face. Just having a good time. Unlike Sunwoo.

Sunwoo’s already sought out the guy with a flask, getting his cup of his punch spiked. He’s sure many others have as well. The students all flail around with ease.

But then again, maybe they are just able to do that. Not caring what anyone else thinks.

Sunwoo can be like that too. Except it’s usually only around his close friends. Not all of these strangers.

But eventually he has to pretend. Juyeon pulls him into a group photo. Sunwoo shares niceties with unrecognizable faces. They pretend as well.

They all group up. Sunwoo manages to land in the middle, which makes him stiffen up. Stranger’s hands are thrown on his back. A bright light blinds his eyes. The photographer even has to ask him to relax.

Sunwoo tries , but he knows the strained smile on his face too well. He’s absolutely going to ruin the photo.

But then there’s a hand holding his own. Past the lights, he can see Juyeon at his side. Sunwoo gazes down at Juyeon’s fingers interlocked with his. They’ve hugged, cuddled, all of the platonic contact you can think of. Except hand-holding.

To Sunwoo, it feels like it crosses some sort of invisible line. He can feel that line pull and snap in his sore chest. Over and over again.

Yet, when Juyeon gives a comforting squeeze, Sunwoo relaxes. The photographer counts down.

Three: Sunwoo can feel Juyeon’s breath against his cheek. He still looks at him even when Sunwoo keeps his eyes pried away.

Two: When his breath leaves, Sunwoo still feels the warmth between their hands. It’s grounding in a way he never thought was possible. Juyeon’s presence beside him is almost overwhelming.

One: Sunwoo’s cheeks heat up. He can’t tell if it’s from the stretch of his smile or something else entirely. Not sure if he wants to find out.

Click.

The group rushes out to grab their pictures. Sunwoo trails behind, holding back his excitement. Whatever just happened, he’s going to have it printed forever. His to hold. His to stick in his box of memories. Just to prove it really happened.

The photo strip is glossy, protecting this photo as best as it can. But the photo is not what he remembers. It’s not Juyeon cozy by his side.

Because, Sunhee has Juyeon’s chin between her fingers, pressing a wet kiss on his cheek. Juyeon is grinning, leaning into it and away from Sunwoo.

Sunwoo, placed in the center, like the main event. One for everyone to point and laugh at. His face nearly beet red. Nobody who saw the photo would know why though. There is nothing there to blush about.

He feels like the biggest fucking idiot. Whatever that Sunwoo felt, wasn’t real. Not even close.

In front of him, Juyeon and Sunhee are pressed against each other, grinning at the photo. Sunhee points at them while Juyeon raises his copy to Sunwoo. Like he’s proud of it?

Proud of turning Sunwoo into a fool.

And god , he knows Juyeon never would, but it feels like he’s laughing at him – because, why would Sunwoo ever think that Juyeon understood. The collapse of his lungs, stutter of his heart. It was his fault. Never Juyeon’s.

Sunwoo steps up to Sunhee and drops his copy into her hand, “Here, take an extra.”

He doesn’t let himself say more. Even though he wants to. Really wants to let everything clawing up his throat out, because it hurts to keep in.

Sunwoo rushes through the ballroom, before landing in the hallway. He could swear he saw the flask guy from earlier out here. He just needed a little more…

He starts to turn a corner before someone yanks him back. Sunwoo pulls his arm from the grip and steps back against the wall. “What the fuck–”

It’s Juyeon.

Sunwoo can’t help but check his side for Sunhee, always following him around. But she’s not there. Not close enough to deal with whatever this is. “Why did you run off? What’s wrong? Did I do something wrong?” Juyeon rasps, chewing on his lip.

Sunwoo has only ever seen him do it when he’s putting on a show of being cocky. But that is far from the case. Juyeon’s eyes are awake and fluttering across his face. Steps of distance between them. It makes Sunwoo feel sick.

“I’m fine. Just looking for someone.” Sunwoo answers, staring anywhere but Juyeon.

Juyeon shakes his head before Sunwoo even finishes talking. “No, there’s something wrong. Can you tell me, please?”

The music is distant now and all that dances are unspoken words around them. Sunwoo wants it to remain unspoken. Doesn’t think he can deal with whatever comes after.

Juyeon doesn’t feel that way, “I’m serious. You’ve been off for a while now.”

Off? Sunwoo takes a step forward, causing Juyeon to stumble back. “I’ve been off? Me? That is really rich coming from you.” He spits, digging a finger into Juyeon’s chest.

Juyeon’s adam’s apple bobs. All he does is stare. Sunwoo flinches at the sight, regret burrowing in his chest. But he just can’t stop, “You’ve been treating me differently ever since you started dating Sunhee. We’ve been best friends since I can remember and you barely speak to me anymore!”

“We hung out last weekend?” Juyeon finally croaks out.

“Yes we did. But we almost didn’t. You were too busy sucking up to your girlfriend! That is all you seem to do these days. Search for her approval. Can’t you see how much she uses you?!”

Juyeon straightens up, his attitude changing within a few words. Their height difference is more apparent now. “She doesn’t use me? I just like helping her out. That’s what you do when you care about someone, Sunwoo. You take care of them.” Juyeon explains, like Sunwoo is a child.

“Then where have you been?!” Sunwoo cries out.

His hands feel fuzzy now. So do his legs. Everything does. Letting everything that’s built up out — is finally taking its toll. Juyeon doesn’t respond, eyes squinting, searching for something. Sunwoo doesn’t make him wait long, “I thought we cared about each other, Juyeon? I rarely see you anymore. When I do, it’s once a week or I catch you lugging Sunhee’s bag for her.”

“It’s not like you try to talk to me either!”

Sunwoo watches Juyeon’s throat tighten. Just like it was on the phone with Sunhee. Sunwoo finds some sort of sick pride in knowing that he can get just as many emotions from him. Juyeon keeps going, “It’s not like I don’t miss hanging out with you too. Of course, I care about you. You don’t know how much I care about you. We just can’t–”

“Can’t what? Be around each other anymore? Why can’t you be around me now that you have Sunhee?” Sunwoo interrupts, not caring that he’s right up in Juyeon’s face.

“Because!–” Juyeon’s mouth fumbles the words out, he’s shaking.

Sunwoo can barely tell, both of them probably moving at the same speed. Even with the distance, they can’t help the fact they mold with each other. “Because what?”

Juyeon’s breathing is heavy, his lips tremble like they’re grasping words from thin air. “Because even when I’m with Sunhee, you’re there too .” Juyeon shudders, like he had no control of what just happened.

Before Sunwoo can ask ‘ what the hell does that mean’ , they hear something fall around the corner.

Sunhee’s scarlet purse is on the linoleum, matching the color of her face. Her mouth gapes open before it scrunches up uglily. Sunwoo registers all the wrinkles of her anger. She’s never shown this to the public. Sunhee takes Sunwoo’s place in front of Juyeon. She crumbles Juyeon’s necktie, “I fu– I knew it! How could you!”

Even in all her rage, she still holds herself back from cursing. Sunwoo wonders how tiring that must be.

Juyeon doesn’t fight her grip, instead he tries to calm her down, “I didn’t do anything. Please, let’s just talk about this, Sunny.”

The room stops. Sunwoo grimaces when Juyeon realizes what he said. Only they feel the slip-up. Sunhee shoves him away, “Don’t call me that. We’re over.”

She starts to leave but stops when she remembers Sunwoo’s existence. The hand that presses him up against the wall is thin, dainty. Too much power. “I hope you’re happy.” Sunhee barely gives Sunwoo time to process his position before she walks off.

He stays on the wall. The burn of hand on his chest. Above the ache he’s felt for days now. It doesn’t stop. Why won’t it just stop?

After catching the breath he didn’t know he lost, Sunwoo meets Juyeon’s lost gaze. His dress shirt is all messy now, tie pulled out of its shape. Sunwoo almost feels bad.

But they were just arguing. Juyeon tried to make excuses by saying shit that didn’t make sense. Sunwoo doesn’t want to deal with this. So he doesn’t.

He goes back into the ballroom to see a huddle around Sunhee, who is sobbing into silk dresses. A girl frowns when Sunhee uses her ribbon to blow her nose.

Sunwoo wishes he had someone to go cry to. But the only person that has ever been able to comfort him is not a great choice at the moment. So, he gets more punch and pretends it’s hard alcohol. Except it doesn’t have the kick or the benefits he needs.

He hears shouting through the song playing. Sunhee is clambering up to the stage, her friends and Juyeon trying to convince her to come down. But she fixes her crown and grabs the microphone. She wears a sparkling smile but it can’t cover her running mascara, “I know it’s a little early for our speeches but I’m feeling it.”

This can’t be good. “Firstly, I am so grateful for all of the votes I received! I’m glad at least some of you realize how wonderful I am. Some people don’t quite understand all I have to offer.” Sunhee sniffles, wiping her nose with her wrist.

“But I wasn’t the only winner. Juyeon, why don’t you come on up here!”

The crowd, who doesn’t know any better, cheers and chants his name. Juyeon cautiously looks around before his eyes land on Sunwoo. He licks his lips and takes a deep breath. Sunwoo can’t move while Juyeon surveys him. But he seems to settle on a decision and takes the stage with Sunhee.

There’s a round of applause for him, he bows politely. Sunhee glares at him, “Before I pass the microphone to our king. I just have a few words to share.”

Juyeon watches her. He knows. She knows. Hell, Sunwoo knows. But nobody makes a move to stop her outburst. “You all know and love Juyeon. His boyish charm, always willing to assist his classmates,” She begins, “But what if I told you all… It’s just an act.”

There’s chatter among the students and Sunwoo clenches his fists. She should know better than anyone that Juyeon would drop anything to help someone. She should

“We were the dream couple about five minutes ago. We’re over now. All because Juyeon has been leading me on.”

Sunwoo sees hurt wash over Juyeon’s face. They can hear Juyeon’s voice even without the microphone.

You know that’s not true.

Sunhee grows angrier, “Don’t lie. You just wanted me to show off to your parents! I let you off the hook the first time you said his name when we kissed. No more chances.”

Sunwoo doesn’t understand. Or at least he tries not to – when Juyeon’s eyes him in the crowd again. Something isn’t right.

Juyeon says something back but Sunwoo can’t focus enough to listen closely. Sunhee doesn’t appreciate it though, “No you didn’t! But guess what, Juyeon! I didn’t care about you either. You were just there . The two most popular people on campus, it was bound to happen. I wanted to be talked about. So thank you for that, Juyeon.”

She slams the microphone in his hand and leaves the stage. The crowd makes an opening for her, leading right to the exit. Right where Sunwoo stood.

But to his surprise, she doesn’t even look at him. Just walks out.

Nobody chases after her. Not even her friends from before.

Juyeon taps the microphone, sending a piercing ring throughout the ballroom. “Uhm, hi. I’m sorry about all of that.” He doesn’t smile.

The room is silent. Waiting for him. Juyeon takes a deep breath, “While Sunhee isn’t wrong about all of that, it’s not the full story. I won’t be explaining it all but I wanted to share my side.”

“I’m a jerk. I won’t deny that. But I did not use Sunhee just for her popularity. What you all just saw, she’s not always like that, I promise. Honestly, she’s a good person. It’s just been difficult…for the both of us. Please don’t let what happened tonight change your opinion of her. She is still the dedicated classmate you all know.” Juyeon tries a tight smile this time.

He takes off his crown, causing strands of hair to stick up. It’s cute how serious he is. “I did not lead her on. She means a lot to me, it’s just…There’s someone who means more.”

Gasps roam the room. Sunwoo could write about this. He doesn’t think he’s ever been so invested in an event such as this one. Maybe his teacher would see some dedication for once. Maybe let him pass the class.

“But this is between me and them. So, I’ll stop there. Thank you all for your patience. Enjoy your night.” He finishes before sliding the microphone back in its stand.

The spotlight tries to reach him when he jumps off the stage, but it can’t. Leaving him in darkness.

Sunwoo can still spot him though. Coming his way.

But he’ll use the darkness as an excuse for why he leaves. Back to his dorm, his phone asleep, him under the covers.

Maybe, Juyeon will let it go.

“Breaking: Best Friend Finally Answers His Phone”

By. Kim Sunwoo

Konkuk University

ksunwoo2000@*******.com

Two days after Konkuk University’s winter dance, Kim Sunwoo, college freshman, stops ignoring his best friend’s calls.

Kim says “I wanted to answer. To hear his voice again. I’m just scared of what we’ll talk about.”

There are a total of 12 missed calls, 5 missed text messages. All of the apologizing nature.

In a voicemail, Lee Juyeon, alleged best friend, says “We need to talk.”

Doesn’t that just send shivers down your spine, dear readers? We hope that doesn’t stop you from coming back for updates on this event.

—----

Sunwoo grips onto his seat when Juyeon walks into the cafe. His body is screaming at him to get up and book it . But he can’t. He needs to see this through. It’s childish of him to avoid Juyeon like this. Especially when he’d accused him of doing the same.

His best friend pulls out a chair and sits across from him. Sunwoo holds his breath in anticipation. No idea what to expect from Juyeon’s mouth.

“Did you order?” Juyeon asks softly.

Oh. Okay. Well if this is what they were doing, Sunwoo could handle it. “I did, two iced americanos.”

Juyeon smiles and Sunwoo nearly jumps out of his skin. He missed that smile. He missed Juyeon. It has always felt different when he was around. Only recently did Sunwoo get to know what the absence of it was like. “Thanks. Uhm, I’m sorry. I don’t really know how to start this.” Juyeon awkwardly laughs.

Sunwoo missed that too, by the way.

“I think I do.” Sunwoo sighs as he tries to build courage.

Juyeon raises a brow and sits up. Ready to listen. Sunwoo doesn’t particularly like the attention. But he goes on, “I’m sorry about what I said at the dance. You have been trying, more than I have. I shouldn’t have yelled at you.”

Juyeon rests a hand on Sunwoo’s. He wants to move away because he knows where this took him last time. He doesn’t want that hope again. But he tries to stay still. “No, I deserved that. Honestly, I was avoiding you because I just couldn’t handle it…I didn’t understand what was going on.” Juyeon tells him.

Sunwoo figures he should apologize further, explain what he’s been feeling. But he’s been thinking and he has to ask, “How about you and Sunhee?”

Juyeon moves his hand back and sets them in his lap. He leans back and groans, “We’re over now. I don’t know if we should’ve ever started in the first place.”

“Why?”

“I cared about her a lot. It just wasn’t the same as– Do you not…” Juyeon stops himself, suddenly hesitant.

Sunwoo waits for him to continue. Apparently Juyeon is doing the same. After the silence has been pulled too tight, Juyeon finishes, “Do you not know who I was talking about? During the speech?”

Sunwoo shakes his head, even if his answer might not be entirely true. Juyeon blinks a few times before biting his lip. Sunwoo watches him do it. No longer sure if he can watch this from an unbiased, journalistic approach.

“Well, that’s…I thought you knew.” Juyeon muses, trying to think of a new plan.

Sunwoo should really pay more attention. Juyeon is saying important details to the story. But his lips are glistening and Sunwoo wants to wipe them. His mouth forms words, deep and enunciated. Like he was reading one of his poems aloud. Sunwoo doesn’t come back until he catches a ‘...you’ .

He looks up just as soon as Juyeon shies away. “Me?...What about me?” Sunwoo asks.

Juyeon tilts his head, “Did you not hear me just now?”

Sunwoo hangs his head. Juyeon lets out an airy laugh, “Well, that took a lot for me to say, I don’t know if I can do it again.”

“No, please say it again, I swear I’m listening now.” Sunwoo whines.

It’s important to his article. He has to know.

Juyeon grins at him, “Okay. The person I was talking about was you.”

Sunwoo is about to say ‘I know you were talking about me, but what did you say’ when he realizes he doesn’t mean just now . Juyeon means the speech.

“You–Hold on. You like me?”

Juyeon’s face turns rosy now that he’s actually gotten a reaction. “Yeah. I didn’t realize that’s how I felt until after Sunhee and I got together. Whenever we’d go on dates, I just kept thinking, what would Sunwoo think about this place? I wanted to be there with you.”

Sunwoo can’t think. Juyeon probably pities him when he continues, “I tried to invest in the relationship more. Any time Sunhee was happy, it felt like a success, a step in the right direction. I thought I could get my mind back on track but…I really couldn’t.”

Sunwoo still can’t respond. This is very personal. Very not good for an article.

Juyeon must notice the panic, “If you don’t feel the same way, that’s okay, Sunwoo. I just needed to–”

“I do.”

Juyeon’s mouth snaps shut, eyes searching over Sunwoo, again. Like he always does. Trying to take everything in, all at once. He’d be a better reporter than Sunwoo could ever be.

Except now it’s Sunwoo’s turn to talk. “I don’t think I knew either. I just thought I hated Sunhee but…I think that’s because I wasn’t her.”

Juyeon’s hands shake when he sets them on the table again. “Juyeon, I don’t think I just like you though. It’s more than that. A lot more.”

Juyeon nods for a second, processing. But he doesn’t understand just yet. So, Sunwoo grabs his hand, straightening out two fingers. Juyeon fumbles until Sunwoo sets them on his neck, where his pulse beats.

He doesn’t have to feel it himself to know how fast it goes. It beats like it's supporting two hearts instead of one. Sunwoo figures it is.

Juyeon stares at him as he feels it. Sunwoo continues, “It’s been like this for days. Now I know why.”

Juyeon’s fingers press deeper. Like he’s inspecting something. Sunwoo, his subject.

“Me too.”

Juyeon breathes openly after he says it. Watching Sunwoo’s reaction. Which is a mix of stuttering heartbeats and a relieved smile.

It’s not until after they finish that Sunwoo notices the two iced americanos waiting on the counter.

“Breaking: Best Friend Takes Boyfriend to His Favorite Arcade”

By. Kim Sunwoo

Konkuk University

ksunwoo2000@*******.com

On Friday night, Lee Juyeon takes his boyfriend, Kim Sunwoo, on a first date. It happens to be at Kim’s favorite arcade, Spot Game Hall.

They arrive at 7 p.m. and plan to stay until closing time. Arcade employee, Choi Chanhee, says “You two will leave promptly at closing time. I’m not keeping it open late for you again.”

The new couple earns many tickets. Lee even wins an oversized cat plush toy from a claw machine. Maybe these aren’t as rigged as we once thought?

They also plan to play a popular dancing game. We will keep you updated on the outcome.

(We know it’s not proper to be biased but, Sunwoo is definitely going to win.)

—----

Sunwoo takes his stance on the dance pad. Juyeon sets his cat plush gently beside the machine, in his field of view. Very proud of his accomplishment. Sunwoo swears he heard him call it his baby earlier. “You ready to lose, Sunny?”

Sunwoo rolls his eyes, pressing start, “You wish. Try not to embarrass yourself in front of the cat.”

“Pawla has a name, excuse you!” Juyeon retorts as he grabs onto the railing behind him.

They both are professionals at this by now. But Sunwoo will not go down without a fight. He didn’t barely pass middle school for nothing. This was his calling.

The music starts and they no longer cringe at how loud the bass is. It begins easily, leaving Sunwoo time to send smirks at Juyeon, all of his hits have been perfect.

But Juyeon’s has as well. So he returns the smirk with a more cocky one.

The song picks up, quickening with no time to ease in. Sunwoo can hear Juyeon sputter at the change. Still, he keeps up. Legs knocking around the pad with purpose. They manage to exchange looks at the same time, checking out their competitor. Juyeon’s face looks calm but Sunwoo can see the strain of his arms. Veins he’s never noticed before are now showing.

Perfect hit after perfect hit. This is staining Sunwoo’s ego. So, he plays a little dirty. Nothing Juyeon couldn’t do right back though. “Hey, Ju!”

Juyeon spins at his name, “Yeah?”

Sunwoo tilts his head and smoothly winks before the embarrassment can stop him. But it doesn’t have the intended effect. Instead, Juyeon just laughs.

“Oh, come on!” Sunwoo protests, flicking his gaze between the screen and Juyeon.

“Hey, Sunwoo!”

Juyeon winks at him. Kind of.

His mouth has to open and curl for him to successfully not close both eyes. Sunwoo tries not to laugh when he sees how proud Juyeon is. It’s quite cute and–

Fuck?

He misses a hit. “You little…” Sunwoo mumbles as the game ends.

He’d almost made it through perfectly. Juyeon just had to get him at the end. He rubs his eyes and groans, not wanting to see the final score. When he checks to see Juyeon’s screen — he realizes Juyeon is in front of him instead. Covering Sunwoo’s score with his hand. “How about we both just split paying for snacks? No losers here.” Juyeon sweetly smiles.

Sunwoo nods, “I like that idea.”

But because Sunwoo is some type of masochist, he pries Juyeon’s hand off the screen. The point difference is very obvious. “Damn it.”

Juyeon just laughs and pulls Sunwoo closer. “It’s okay, better luck next time?” Juyeon tries to comfort.

The truth is, Sunwoo will never move on from this loss. His reputation forever tainted. Nothing in the world could cheer him up–

Juyeon leaves a quick peck on his cheek. Sunwoo can feel himself start to blush furiously. He hates it. So, he kisses Juyeon on the lips, to even it out.

It lasts a bit longer than he means it to. Juyeon closes the gap between Sunwoo and the railing. Sunwoo rakes his hands through Juyeon’s hair. It’s all soft and his fingers never get caught up.

Juyeon splits away, cranes his head and presses a kiss right to Sunwoo’s pulse. He hovers there, breath beating on Sunwoo’s neck. Two hearts , he thinks.

“I love you.” Juyeon whispers, moving back up to stare into Sunwoo’s eyes.

Sunwoo doesn’t need to investigate any further for his answer.

“I love you too, Juyeon.”

“Breaking: Boyfriends Skip Class Together, Teachers in Uproar”

By. Kim Sunwoo

Konkuk University

ksunwoo2000@*******.com

This morning, suspects Lee Juyeon and Kim Sunwoo, students of Konkuk University, skip their morning classes. For Lee it is Business Analytics and for Kim it is Introduction to Media Writing.

Only Lee receives messages and emails asking where he is. Kim flies under the radar.

Lee says “I’ve never done something like this before. Oh god, Sunwoo, what if I get in trouble? I mean, my teacher is nice but I don’t know if she’ll excuse this.”

Kim says “Grow up, Juyeon. They’ll get over it. Now, do you want two straws or one?”

The server is relieved when they finally order. The couple end up sharing a vanilla milkshake and a slice of cherry pie. Lee blushes when their noses brush while drinking the shake. His face turns a very pretty pink color.

Everything about Juyeon is pretty.

You know what, to hell with being unbiased. I am, in fact, very biased! Juyeon is my boyfriend! The best thing that has happened to me in a very, very long time.

I’m not cut out for observing. I’m glad there are people that are, we need solid journalists. But I don’t think this is for me.

I want to talk about Juyeon in all the ways my lips can’t. Maybe, I’ll take a creative writing route instead?

Like, why do we have such specific rules here? Why does it matter if I start my sentence with 13 or thirteen?

You know what?

I’m dropping this class.

Sorry not sorry, Mr. Jeong! You are the toughest grader I’ve ever met! Probably for good reason…But still tough.

I guess I did learn a lot from this class. I wouldn’t be here without it. So, thanks, I guess.

Dear readers, you will (kind of) be missed.

I’m sure you’re relieved about this though, aren’t you Mr. Jeong?

You’re welcome.

Notes:

I know Sunwoo probably wouldn't take a writing class as a freshman. I just decided to let him luck out and figure out he hates his major earlier than the rest of us.
Unless you enjoy your major, then I am happy for you...Really...No ill feelings at all...
(Kidding, it's hard to figure it out. I'm changing mine soon as well. OMG Sunwoo and I twinning!)
