Work Text:
Waking up to the welcoming rays of sunlight, Shoyo lazily got out of bed courtesy of it being a Sunday morning.
On this day, our tangerine decided to have a well-deserved day off, without homework, without volleyball practice.....surprising, huh? In other words, he was going to spend all day on a call with a couple of friends, namely Kenma, Kuroo, Bokuto, Akaashi, and a few others, and play video games.
A knock startled Shoyo out of his thoughts. He sighed, realizing his morning wouldn't be as quiet as he had hoped for. Despite what other people said, he liked having an off day from time to time: he overworked himself with practice and he was an older brother, meaning he has to take care of his sister.
Getting up from his comfortable bed with a long-suffering sigh, he stumbled a little while trying to reach the door. He opened it to see Natsu, his little sister, pouting adorably at him.
He mentally cooed at his sister's antics. He tried to stifle a laugh. Shoyo picked Natsu up, receiving an "oomph" from the girl, and placed her on his shoulders.
"Nii-chan, nooo, hahaha stooooopp!" Natsu laughed, enjoying her brother's playful side. Her tiny hands were now gripping his short ginger hair.
"Owww Natsu! Don't pull on nii-chan's hair!" he jokingly scolded her. That elicited a giggle from her when she was gently put down.
"Where's mom, Natsu?" The teen asked, looking around the house with no signs of their mother and the smell of freshly cooked food.
The girl was staring at him, big brown eyes looking confused at the volleyball player. "She told us yesterday that she has work to do in the morning." Now it was Shoyo's turn to pout, he was really hungry but it seemed he was going to have to make breakfast. All of a sudden, Natsu's tummy growls revealing she was also really hungry.
Shoyo's gaze softened when he heard the little noise his sibling's stomach made and he sighed in defeat. "Are you hungry, jelly bean?" he asked with a slight smirk knowing exactly how Natsu reacts to the nickname.
Natsu seemed to not notice at first so she responded "Yes!". Almost immediately her cheeks flushed cherry red "I told you to stop calling me that!" she shouted, irritated.
Shouyou, his hand now rubbing his chin in a thinking manner, replied "No can do, jelly bean." He then proceeded to walk into the kitchen, whistling a tune, not a care in the world.
Natsu was eating happily while Shoyo was looking through his phone since he finished faster. A sudden 'buzz' startled Natsu, making her drop the fork on the floor.
Shoyo chuckled receiving a glare from Natsu. He stuck his tongue out at her. He saw the name "BAKAYAMA" displayed on the screen. He raised an eyebrow in question, why would Kageyama call him? Maybe he wants to practice?
Answering the phone, Hinata froze.
Kageyama..... Was..... Crying.....?
What. the. actual. fuck?
Different scenarios ranging from bad to worse filled Hinata's head as to who made his friend cry and why...
"H-Hinata?" a whisper was heard. The mentioned boy quickly pinched himself, hoping against hope that this was a nightmare. Unfortunately, it was not. Finally recovering, he said: "Shit, dude- Kags, what happened?".
Feeling a vein ready to pop, he angrily wondered who made his best friend cry? Who dared to do that? Who did he need to maim and torture? No, even better, who did he need to kill most painfully?
"Can you come over?" Kageyama sounded like he was going to start wailing soon, so Hinata seriously wondered what in the bleeding hell happened.
"Sure, yeah... okay, um, I'll be over in 10," he said, rummaging through his closet, trying to find some clothes to change into. Kageyama ended the call with an okay, and the tangerine was now thinking of killing his best friend. What kind of a frigging answer is that in a situation like this.......
Shoyo was moving at lightning speed, faster than Flash himself, some would say. He was trying to find his keys, and change Natsu's clothes cause he couldn't leave her at home alone. His mom would kill him in more ways than one.
Arriving in front of the Kageyama's household, Shoyo inhaled and exhaled, preparing himself for the hell that was about to be unleashed. Something was wrong with his best friend and he did not like it one bit.
Knocking on the door, he was welcomed by Kageyama Miwa, the older sibling of his volleyball partner. She visibly relaxed when she saw the orange-headed boy. Shoyo left Natsu in Miwa's care so he could go to Kageyama's room. When he opened the door, he felt like he was sucker-punched.
Kageyama Tobio was on the cold floor of his room, hugging his knees, crying his eyes out. Strange thing was, he was wearing a hoodie that somehow seemed larger on him. It probably was one of Miwa's oversized hoodies.
"Oh my god...." Shoyo said, rushing to the setter's side, bringing him into a much-needed hug. The setter's head was now on Shoyo's chest, his hair being pet by the shorter. The tangerine's shirt was now completely drenched by his best friend's tears, but he didn't care.
"Hey, you're okay... everything's fine, calm down." the shorter said, desperately trying to reassure the taller. This kind of thing was unusual for the short-tempered boy. After a while, Kageyama calmed down but Hinata was still pissed as fuck.
"Who made you cry?" he asked harshly, the tone coming out way harsher than he expected. Kageyama flinched, making Shoyo sigh, this was not how his Sunday morning was supposed to go.
"I'm sorry, what happened?" he tried again, trying to speak more gently. Kageyama was still hugging his knees tightly looking like he was going to break for the second time that day.
"I did it," Kageyama uttered, finding his fingers more interesting, not wanting to see Shoyo's reaction to his news. Hinata looked at Kageyama confused, what the hell does that mean??!!???
"What?" he asked, having no idea what the boy in front of him had meant. Kageyama pouted angrily, tear stains still visible on his pale cheeks. Hinata almost wanted to laugh at the image if it wasn't for the state his milk addict friend was in.
"I confessed, dumbass." The blueberry boy said weakly. Hinata's jaw dropped, he seriously didn't expect this. His awkward, emotionally constipated, so-called "Tyrant King" (Hinata punched a lot of people when he heard this stupid name) best friend confessed his feelings to the one and only.....
Great King.
"You confessed to Oikawa-san?????". Getting only a nod in response, he decided to continue.
“Isn't that a good thing though?" Hinata honestly thought that the Great King liked Kageyama back but was too much of a childish person to do anything about it.
The blueberry boy didn't move for about a few seconds before just shrugging his shoulders. Hinata let out a frustrated sigh, he needed a more concrete answer than that.
"Kags I need a full sentence to properly understand you" he felt like he was explaining how talking works to a toddler. He was so done with the suspense and mystery that came with this day. Kagayama scoffed at him.
"He just hung up, no answer whatsoever." he gave a brief explanation of what had happened. Hinata's brain needed a few moments to process the words and realized something.
"Wait...You confessed...OVER THE FRIGGING PHONE!?" he shouted, getting up from the floor in a blink of an eye. The younger glanced at the redhead for a second before focusing his gaze on the floor, staring blankly at it.
"Yes.... you told me to do it," he said. The tangerine facepalmed, although he did tell the setter to confess. When he told Kageyama 'You should confess before your chance gets stolen by one of his fangirls', he didn't think the boy will do it just a few days after and over the damn phone.
"Oh my god.... You know what? Stay here, I'll get you some, uh, ice cream". When he would watch movies with Natsu there would always be a heartbreaking scene with ice cream. He thought that will make the boy feel better, "and we'll figure this shit out" he cleared his throat loudly and then walked out of the room.
After bringing some ice cream to the heartbroken boy, he walked into the hallway and took out his phone, dialing Seiho's ace phone number.
Now... you may be thinking: How did the resident sunshine who put the sun to shame get the intimidating guy's phone number from another team?
The ace gave it to him over the excuse that he was so tired of his best friend's hopeless pining is the answer you're looking for. They kept messaging back and forth complaining about their friends or practice problems. They formed a great bond over just text messages, no one knew about it though.
“Hey, Shoyo?" a deep voice was heard.
“Where the fuck are you and your best friend?" he asked angrily. Now, that he was not in Kageyama's presence he could let his real anger to the surface. His hands were tightly clenched as if wanting to punch someone. That someone being the Great King himself.
"Sho, what the hell happened?" questioned Iwaizumi, confused as to who and what caused the little middle blocker's angry behavior.
No, Iwaizumi didn't mean the swearing part. That was normal for a high school student, especially when you have Kageyama Tobio as a best friend. He was thinking about how tense and annoyed Hinata seemed every time his breathing was heard, which was quite often.
Was this some kind of annoying prank? If so, then Hinata was doing a god damn good job at acting. I'm not kidding when I say that Iwaizumi felt the temperature drop to icy winter when he answered the phone.
“Why don't you ask your best friend?" Hinata tried to keep his voice down and temper to a minimum (and failed).
Iwaizumi pinched his nose. He wasn't looking for problems that day but apparently, Shittykawa had other plans.
"What did he do?". He knew Oikawa was a manipulative bastard but what could he have possibly done for Hinata to get so angry?
Hinata groaned, what was he doing? It was not Iwaizumi's fault for Oikawa's stupidity. They were two different people, so Iwaizuimi didn't deserve this treatment.
”Just come here or I will pursue my dreams of killing the Great King," he said ending the call.
Iwaizumi was left with his mouth agape, trying and failing to understand what had just happened. He hoped this was going to be a normal day. What kind of deity did he manage to piss off?
Just then, Oikawa popped his head from behind a wall and was about to ask 'Iwa-chan' what he wanted to eat since 'Iwa-chan' was visiting. Iwaizumi glared at him and the only words that left his mouth were:
“You're fucked" Oikawa raised an eyebrow at him.
Hinata was pacing around the Kageyama household, awaiting two Aoba Johsai students. 15 minutes had already passed since the call with Iwaizumi and no one showed up yet, even though he asked them to come. (more like threatened)
He was growing more and more impatient by the second. He couldn't stand hearing the blue boy's heartwrenching sniffles.
When he heard the doorbell, Hinata rushed towards it. He opened it, revealing the two Seijoh players.
Iwaizumi Hajime and Oikawa Tooru
Hinata, despite his height, aimed for the 6ft tall setter's collar, pulling harshly on it, ready to beat him to a pulp. (Yikes) He knew he wasn't gonna do that but a little bruise was nothing compared to Kageyama's sobbing.
Iwaizumi was staring wide-eyed at the scene playing right in front of his eyes. If this were a normal day he would've stopped the fight and smacked them both. There was a problem though: This was not a normal day and he couldn't move. Well..more like two problems but eh...
The only logical explanation is he was so bewildered by Shoyo's actions he became petrified.
Not even a minute later, Hinata let Oikawa go and huffed.
“Chibi-chan" he whined, "What was that for?!" Hinata turned to glare at him. Iwaizumi thought Shittykawa should learn to keep his mouth shut.
"What do you think it was, huh?" Hinata said with a plethora of sass, still glaring knives into Oikawa. He didn't want to see Kageyama in pain when they both helped eachother so much. Maybe you couldn't see this from the way they fought and acted with one another but one thing was for sure: You mess with one of them, you mess with all of them.
Stepping in to stop Hinata from turning this into a blood bath, Iwaizumi put a hand on Hinata's shoulder in an attempt to calm him down. Hinata turned to look at Iwaizumi, face blank.
“What happened," he asked, and yeah.... maybe that wasn't the best choice of words in this situation but can you blame him? This was the first time when he didn't know what to do. He had never seen Hinata so mad. Hinata removed Iwaizumi's hand and looked him dead in the eye.
"Say Iwaizumi-san..." making him gulp, a shiver creeping down his spine. Usually, when texting, Hinata would call him "Iwa-san" or just "Iwa".
"What would you do or how would you feel if you would find your best friend on the floor sobbing? All because he confessed his feelings?”
Oikawa's face paled, did he hear that right?or were his ears not working anymore. He grabbed the chibi by the shoulders, shaking the life out of him.
“Tobio confessed to someone?!" Hinata felt the world stop. What the hell was the universe planning today? Chaos thought Hinata. Well, more than usual. Usually, Hinata and Kageyama were the ones to cause the chaos.
"Yeah?" he said, no feelings left, just staring blankly at the brunette's face.
"You." All that Oikawa managed to do was squeak. When did that happen? Wouldn't he be over the moon right now if it did? This left more questions than answers and Oikawa was not happy.
"Small fry, I'm pretty sure I would remember if something like that took place." Oikawa's once playful voice was long gone and replaced by a certain seriousness Hinata never heard before.
“Idiot! Are you playing dumb now?!" he was hit on the arm by Iwaizumi.
"Ow! No! That didn't happen since Takeru had..." He stopped, his mouth making an "O" shape. "oh.."
"Oh, what?" Hinata felt that his world was spinning. He thought Oikawa was an asshole and had no actual feelings for Kageyama after the events that took place. Now all he felt was shock.
"Takeru had my phone while I was studying since I was supposed to babysit him this morning," he explained, covering his face with his hands making the words come out muffled.
"Chibi?"Hinata hummed, forgetting how the human body functions for a bit
"Where is Tobio?" Oikawa looked frantic so Hinata decided he should tell him, just this once. He pointed to Kageyama's window and Oikawa practically disappeared. The wind makes Hinata's hair messy.
“THAAAaaaaannnnksssss chibiii...." Was heard in the distance.
Moments later, the tangerine recovered, Iwaizumi was still shocked, Kageyama and Oikawa were doing...uh...something, he didn't know.
“Thanks for not killing my team's captain." Iwaizumi joked, finally speaking in what seemed like ages. He was attempting to start a conversation. Hinata looked at him and chuckled dryly.
"Well... I kinda still want to play volleyball and you can't do that in prison." He gave the ace an innocent toothy grin.
Iwaizumi laughed, ignoring the way his heart fluttered each time he spoke to Hinata. He liked to take in every feature the boy had displayed, especially the way his eyes sparkled when he is extremely happy.
Another minute passed and what do Iwaziumi and Hinata see?
Oikawa had his arms around Kageyama's shoulder, guiding him to the front door and the younger setter was red in the face. wot?
The two other volleyball players looked at each other and then at the boys.
"Uh, care to explain?" Iwaizumi began.
"Happily!" Oikawa cheered. "Tobio is my boyfriend," The tallest said, smiling like a love-drunk idiot when he looked at Kageyama.
"Excuse me, WHAATTT??????"Hinata said, a protective feeling rising and glaring at Oikawa. Oikawa sighed and looked at Kageyama, looking for help.
“Dumbass" Kageyama scoffed, looking away.
"It was a misunderstanding. Takeru was the one who picked up the phone and got nervous hearing the confession......which was not meant for him" he said between his teeth in a whisper-like voice, hoping no one heard.
"After he heard that, he hung up."
“Okay...that's good, I'm glad" He laughed and everybody let out a collective sigh of relief.
"but.."
Never mind, everyone went stiff, I think Oikawa forgot how to breathe but who knows.
"If you ever even think of hurting him, intentionally or not, I'll make you regret it big time Great King." his eyes glinting evilly, but smiling innocently.
“And I'll help him." Iwaizumi hissed, his eyes darkening and lips thinning.
Oikawa gasped and put his hand over his heart in a dramatic way.
"You wound me Iwa-cha" he laughed at the end, breaking the whole act. (he was beyond terrified of the two, but he would not admit that out loud)
His hair was ruffled by Iwaizumi, who had a smirk on his face. Iwaizumi was proud of his best friend and best friend's boyfriend.
Hinata didn't miss the way Kageyama's eyes softened while looking at Oikawa, his cheeks turning a pinkish color.
Hinata knew Oikawa and Kageyama had their problems. He knew if he and Iwaizumi hadn't helped them realize their feelings, they would still be acting cold towards each other. Hinata knew Oikawa and Kageyama would need to get over every obstacle thrown in their way together if they truly wanted this relationship to last.
In the end, Hinata knew they loved eachother and that made him happy. This day was an emotional roller coaster but if this was the end, he didn't mind it as much.
He then saw Iwaizumi and smiled at him. He always felt calmer around Iwaizumi, when they were texting or when they were on a call. His cheeks grew red as his thoughts began to wander, he hoped no one noticed. He let out a small laugh.
Iwaizumi looked at Hinata fondly, a blush creeping up his neck. He was trying to not hug Hinata in front of everyone, especially right now since he wanted the focus to be on the Oikage ship. With a single thought in his head, he congratulated the new couple.
‘One day I'll be as brave as Kageyama.’
’I promise, Shoyo’
