Work Text:
Easter was coming up soon, of course it was to celebrate Jesus’s resurrection and candy and eggs, but that wasn’t what Wade cared about. He wasn’t pleased with that as much as who carried the eggs and candy, the Easter bunny. It was quite shocking to everyone how out of all who still believed him, it was Wade.
The duck was mesmerized at how there could be such a mascot that didn’t seem overwhelming like Santa due to how high his sleigh would go or the massive amount of reindeer, or creepy like any “mascot” of Halloween. Anything from ghosts to horror movie icons would have him enter a panic attack. One time, Roy had the entire gang watch Child’s Play for a movie night. Once the killer doll Chucky had possessed himself and was alive, the duck had been more than petrified and started to his usual act and hooped on Roy while shaking, which led to the duck no longer being able to stand Halloween. Another time that made him despise it more was when the same rooster tried to prank him one year, after he promised Orson he wouldn’t partake in doing anymore scary pranks on Wade.
However, the Easter bunny was positive, but not overwhelming or ready to kill. Besides little children, the Easter bunny wasn’t around that many people so if Wade could hang out with him, he most likely would be able to.
Unfortunately, most found this weird as they still couldn’t get why Wade would believe in something he probably knows by now, doesn’t exist. They’ve tried to convince him that there’s no such thing. Ironically, Roy didn’t say anything on the matter. He didn’t say there was a Easter bunny, but never claimed there wasn’t. Because if he did, the rooster would be afraid the duck’s feelings would be automatically hurt.
Wade and Bo were taking a nice little stroll around the farmstead, possessing a discourse relating to this exact subject.
“Like, man, even I don’t believe in that stuff!”
“But why? It’s such a fun thing to imagine! And it’s cool!”
“No. Nonexistent people aren’t that cool, Wade.”
“B-but the Easter bunny isn’t nonexistent, so he is cool!”
“Have you seen him?”
“Yeah! When me and Roy were in preschool together, our teacher saw the Easter bunny hop his way across our school parking lot when he laid down some eggs! She only would let him go on the condition that he would stay for pictures and it was such a fun day!”
Roy eavesdropped on their conversation, then walked up to the two.
“So you’re gonna forget you had that picture taken without me?”
“Roy, you said you didn’t wanna be in the picture!”
“Duck, I was absolutely kidding. I wanted to see him too but you absolutely couldn’t take a joke.”
“But weren’t you in it though?”
The rooster grabbed his phone and showcased the picture to the two, then pointed at the rooster, on the bottom right of the picture, freaking out.
“Jeez, rooster, can’t believe you like, photobombed a good picture though. Like, I can’t believe that.”
Roy sighed. “Oh, Jesus, you cotton swab.”
“But Roy, tell that ram that I’m right and he’s real!”
“Or like, you can disclose the truth to him.”
“I am on neither side of this, you two can continue on with this, I’ll be back later!”
Wade and Bo turned to each other.
“He’s real!”
“No, like, he isn’t! I know I can think differently than others sometimes but cmon!”
Roy had walked and whispered towards you.
“Okay, i got a secret. That wasn’t what truly happened. I’ll do that now,” the rooster said before chuckling.
flashback starts
Roy and Wade walked together into class, the chick turned to the duckling.
“So are you happy about the egg hunt today?”
“Uh. Y-yeah I am! But I can’t wait to see the bunny!”
“But y’know he only comes around when kids don’t notice him, right?”
“Oh, well, maybe a miracle could happen and I can see him!”
“Aren’t you afraid of him though?”
“Not the really cute ones!”
“Okay, well, maybe you might be able to see him. But I wouldn’t promise it!”
The two and the rest of the classroom had finished their egg hunt when Roy walked in the bathroom and noticed the man who wore the costume in one of the stalls.
The man jumped.
“Oh, I’m sorry, child! I didn’t mean for to you see me like this!”
“No, it’s fine. I know there never has been one.”
“Oh, okay. Phew!”
“Anyways, there is someone who loves you though, my all time best friend, could you get back in costume and make his day? He loves the Easter bunny! I just like seeing him happy!”
“Is he a bratty child?”
“Oh, no, no. But he’s scared of a lot of things and I think you being there can comfort him a little bit.”
“Hm. Wow. You’re such a good friend though.”
“Tell me about it.”
Wade was in awe once he saw the Easter bunny in a complete joyous mood, it’s like he was so excited to see the duckling!
He put on his Barney-esque voice.
“Hello, ducky! What’s your name?”
The duckling chuckled, “It’s Wade! Yours?”
“Smith!”
“That’s a really cool name, if I have to admit. God, I wish Roy was here to see that I’m right and he IS real!”
“Yep, you absolutely should! Hey, let’s say we take a picture right before you get dismissed today, shall we?”
“Yeah! That’ll show him!”
Smith placed a chair on the school floor, a portrait of Easter eggs in the background. He grabbed the duckling, who started to chuckle once more, and placed him on his left knee.
Roy had ran out of the bathroom, attempting to act out.
“Oh, look! Wade actually got the Easter bunny to see him today! Good for him!”
“Yep! Now I get to steal your candy!” Wade replied in his sing-song voice.
The photographer announced in the background, “Okay and we’ll take it in 3…2…”
“Not if I have anything to say about that candy!” The chick responded to the duckling.
“1…”
Roy had photobombed the picture by walking it, his jaw dropping.
“Oh wow, Roy! Why did you ruin my picture?!”
“You were gonna steal my candy!”
“I was just joking, buddy!”
The two’s chants at each other then transitioned to what became their first ever argument, which now have transformed into their infamous lovers spats.
end of flashback
“And now you’re officially caught up. Moving on—“ Roy had stopped again to eavesdrop on yet another conversation involving… you guessed it.
“Wade, I’m sorry people keep telling you but there is just no such thing.”
“You told me there was no such thing as a ghost, and guess what?! There was! And then when you told me not to be superstitious! Oh! But the stuff actually did happen! So I’m not even gonna with you!”
“Wade. It’s not that much to get over! Face it, you won’t see him at all this year or any year!”
Wade faced down at the ground.
“Okay. I guess.”
The duck later walked back to his and Roy’s roost slowly, completely dejected from his more positive attitude.
Roy sighed, then strolled up to the pig.
“What you said wasn’t really nice, piggo!”
“What?! You’re gonna defend him on this?”
“Yeah! He’s just wanting to have fun!”
“His fun is you.”
Roy gave him a blank stare.
“But besides me, he’s rarely ever happy! He’s always scared. Even if he doesn’t come, just cheer him on, will you?”
“Like I’m gonna do that towards someone with a four year old mentality.”
“Well… what if he is real? Have you ever seen him?”
“No. I never have and I probably never will.”
“Hm. Okay then,” then Roy walked off.
Roy had an idea. A prank that sounded mischievous, but also very… heartfelt? He was gonna dress up as the Easter bunny to convince Wade into believing he still is truly there.
He went to a spot where no one would notice him, called up his agent and asked for Smith. Then he took a nice shower and put on his a nice suit and tie to look professional for the man.
He would then enter in his vehicle and start driving some 230 miles to Chicago. While driving, Wade called him up on the car’s touchscreen, he then accepted.
“Hi, honey! Where are you at, right now?”
“Oh, me? I just gotta run a couple errands and all.”
“But you know I love running those errands with you.”
“I mean, yeah, ducky-boy, you love doing everything with me.”
“Heh-heh. You’re not wrong.”
“I never am. Well, I’ll be back soon but I’m about to be quite busy soon! Whaddya ya need?”
“Oh. I mean I would like to have a nice Easter with you.”
“Well, obviously you would. I’m not gonna be gone for that long, you’ll have a good day, I promise! Nah, even better. A great day!”
“Yay! Hopefully it’ll be better than today. Lanolin’s bothering me again.”
“Ugh. Lanolin, what did we say again?”
The ewe grumbled. “Fine! I’ll leave him alone with his stupid beliefs!”
“I’ll see you later, honey,” the duck exclaimed, while chuckling. It was so pleasing to hear the rooster and his voice.
Roy had finally made it to the location, and entered inside.
He had went inside the entrance to the huge office, and then walked up to the lady who was servicing everyone at the main office.
The ginger-haired girl with glasses looked upon the rooster and asked, “Welcome to Funny Costumes, how can I help you today?”
“I’m here, because my agent scheduled a meeting with the assistant manager, Smith Wilkins.”
She pulled up her clipboard, with a couple of sheets of paper inside.
“Hm, Roy?”
“Yes.”
“Okay. Come follow me over here.”
The two had entered an elevator, it had flown up to the 6th level. Once they had walked out, they went up to the man’s office, the woman knocking on his door.
“Hey. Mr. Rooster is here.”
“Send him in.”
Roy did as told, and saw the man. He had definitely aged in the few decades since he had last saw him. He went from a dude who looked like he was miserable and worked at a minimum wage job, to a man who looked like your stereotypical rich billionaire.
“Hello, Roy, it’s been awhile, hasn’t it?”
The rooster chuckled, “Yes, I do need something from you through.”
“Hmmmmm, does it have to do with that duck again?”
“Maybe.”
“He still believes in that?! And you still know him?!”
“Yes. I’ll explain. I was one of his only friends for quite awhile, until we moved onto this farm together with a bunch of other randos we saw at school, after we had moved out of our college dorm.”
“Is he still quite scared?!”
The rooster nodded.
“In fact, we’ve been so close for so long, well…”
He pulled up a picture of Wade kissing the rooster himself and showcased it to him.
“Whoa, you two are together?”
“Yep. Couple years I think.”
“Awwww, that’s cute. Do you guys still argue? Because from what I heard, you two argued over that situation for so long.”
“Oh yeah, we absolutely did. And we still do, we just call them lovers quarrels now.”
“Heh. Well, here’s the deal: I think I still do have that costume somewhere.” He went inside his closet and threw other costumes he used during his other gigs at schools until he found it. The infamous Easter bunny costume.
“Well, here it is. And I would love for you to have this, Roy. Although, is there a reason why you wanted this one specifically?”
“It’s hella realistic, for one. And I went up to you cause obviously they’re no longer made.”
“Oh yeah, we’ve since made much more realistic models, but that one should be good too. I think it even has a nice, tiny air conditioner when I was restoring it a couple years ago. I was gonna sell it, but ooh, I’m so glad I didn’t.”
He then walked up to the rooster, “You’re gonna do a pretty good job with this, make your boyfriend proud.”
Roy blushed a tiny bit.
“I will. Thank you, you’re the bes—“
Roy’s phone started to vibrate, the duck was calling him again.
“That’s him?”
“That’s him.”
He picked the phone, and answered.
“Yes, dear?”
“Oh, hi Roy! I was wanting to ask if your favorite candy were those Reese’s cups?”
“Oh, absolutely they are! You know how I am with peanut butter products!”
“Ok! Just wanted to know, my little Roy-bear. I’ll see you when you get home! Speaking of that, is it taking a while because you’re getting me something so nice? Oh lemme guess, is it like, white chocolate? You know I love that so much! Is it a nice little basket of those goodies! Is it just you coming to see me for Easter acting like we don’t see each other every day?” The duck began to nearly faint.
“Whoo, well I’ll leave you alone for now and finish up your stuff. The less I take, the quicker you partaking in finishing your errands, the quicker I get this wondrous gift.” The duck then hung up.
Roy and Smith looked at each other and giggled.
The rooster then was escorted by Smith to the door. Roy went back into his vehicle.
He pulled up his rearview mirror and smiled at himself.
It was nighttime, Roy had woke up at 1AM and tip toed to his SU, grabbed out the costume that he hid, and went into their bathroom. Surprisingly, it was very comfortable as it was clearly made for anyone if they wanted to use it.
He had quietly practiced his act he was going to do as the bunny. Once everything was set in stone, he walked outside and hid in a spot for the next hour or two, waiting for Wade to wake up so he could surprise the duck. He did wonder how Wade was gonna react to Roy supposedly not being there.
The sun had risen, and a prerecorded bugle track played for the most obvious of reasons.
The duck had woken up and yawned. It was expected for his boyfriend to play the bugle, then walk straight back into bed for a good hour or so. But he waited awhile and there was still no rooster. He would have to do their early morning routine on his own.
He walked out of their roost in his PJs, then saw the rest of the crew getting ready for Booker and Sheldon’s egg hunt.
“Alright everyone, I think I did great with this hunt.”
“Like, yeah you did.” Bo replied.
Orson noticed Wade, it was gonna be another year of Wade acting childish, wasn’t it?
Plato had walked by Roy’s spot.
“Pssst! Over here!”
“This is what you wanted, Roy?”
“Yeah. The Easter bunny over here has to give him a special gift as well!”
“So would you like for me to hand you it?”
“Uh, sure!”
He handed the rooster in the costume Wade’s gift.
“Okay, thanks! Now shoo, I can’t make this obvious! Just walk up over there.”
“Alrighty, Roy.”
Wade walked out to the rest, but not before noticing Plato.
“Oh. Hey, Plato! Happy Easter!”
“Same to you, Wade.”
Wade smiled graciously.
“Do you know where Roy is at right now? I didn’t get to wake up beside him this morning.”
“Oh, no, I haven’t seen him yet, but dang, the eggs are looking nice out here.”
“Yeah, but I’m waiting to see the Easter bunny. He’s already gotten out all the eggs, I guess. Another year of not seeing him.”
“Oh, don’t fret duck, he might be here.”
Wade sniffled, and then hugged the rooster.
Booker and Sheldon had finished their hunt. Orson would then walk up to the two.
“Oh, Wade, the eggs have been found but there’s still no bunny and there never was.” Orson bragged.
“You pig, stop being an ass to him! He just wanted to see someone who makes him happy.”
“Oh, please.”
Plato started to angrily grind his teeth at the pig, his fists clenched.
“Okay, okay, I’ll reword that. Wade, he may just never co—“
“Oh ho ho!”
The Easter bunny returned, with his classic Barney-esque voice.
The three were in complete shock, but not long after, Wade became more than excited to reunite with the bunny. He ran up to the bunny and hugged him tightly.
The duck heavily sniffled, before tears happily came out of his eyes.
“It’s so good to see you again, Smith!”
“Same with you too!”
He grabbed the duck’s face and pulled up to the bunny’s own.
“You know, I know it’s been a long time since we’ve last seen each other because I’ve been out for so long taking care of other children,” he then grabbed out his cooler, “but I did get you something that your buddy knew you loved,” he got out the duck’s favorite Pink Drink that Plato had given Roy earlier as his gift from Starbucks, and handed it to him.
“Aw, you didn’t have to, thank you so much!”
He sipped his drink while they had a conversation. This was of course, Plato’s cue to walk away, but not before Roy texted the rooster thanks. Orson had just stood there with the twins in mere shock. Wade was right, he was real.
“Could you take a picture with me, Smith?”
“Sure, ducky-bo— i meant Wade!”
He grabbed out his phone, then aimed it at them and took it.
While the Easter bunny was always smiling, Roy had been genuinely smiling in the costume aswell. Although it was pretty much a prank, it felt so wonderful to see Wade so genuinely happy, and it felt so worth it to see the duck smile for once. He was so amazed, he felt he was gonna cry.
The two would then go and spend a nice day out in the warm, Spring weather. Wade had cuddled up with the bunny most of the time which honestly felt quite comfortable to Roy. He didn’t mind receiving cuddles but this time, it felt so relaxing when Wade was nuzzle in his neck.
They went back home after a long day, but not before seeing a full Pink moon. Wade was in awe over it, and while it was sad to not celebrate it with Roy, he was sure the rooster wouldn’t mind for them to miss one full moon together.
Wade had make it back in the roost after awhile, he noticed that Roy was still absent from anywhere at the farmstead, until the doorbell rung and Roy entered.
“Hey, duck-o! Sorry I couldn’t inform you I was gonna be leaving today, but it was urgent and guess what?”
“What?!”
“After filling out some negotiations, seems like I’m having my own stand up comedy event soon!”
“Good to know! I’m so happy about that, I got to see the Easter bunny too today. Best part was that you were mostly absent from seeing him yet again like you was some couple decades ago!”
“Hahahaha! I knew feathers-for-brains over here wouldn’t me remind that he was here yet again!”
“Honey, I called you up about it and you didn’t answer!”
“Sure! Like I’ll believe that!”
“Well, I guess you won’t believe this basket of Reese’s cups that I made for you either, huh,” he asked, while pulling out said basket to showcase it to the rooster.
“Yeah, I’ll believe that though! Gimme!
“Why should I?”
“Because as your boyfriend, I need treats too!”
“I mean, I didn’t get any!”
“So?”
The two would continue to argue continuously like they always had. While sure, Roy had to try his best to not reveal that he was the bunny, it was still so worth it to see that cute smile, and to have a decent day with the duck, without Wade even realizing it.
