SCANDAL: STAR VOLLEYBALL PLAYER CAUGHT CHEATING

Volleyball fans have been rocked today after images surfaced of Japanese setter Tobio Kageyama, holding hands with a man who very clearly did not look like his boyfriend Tooru Oikawa, who is also a member of the Japanese national volleyball team.

Sources say that Tobio returned to his home country earlier this month, and had been spotted with a mystery man at the airport, who many now suspect may have been his secret lover.

What about Tooru, you ask? Well there hasn’t been any sighting of him since his last upload to social media—a selfie taken with the Tokyo Tower in the background. This was well over a month ago, which has led plenty of people to question whether his silence since has any relation to this matter.

Fans have flooded his comments, as well as Tobio’s, demanding explanations and answers, but so far neither athlete nor their representatives have released a statement.

Is this the end of a relationship that shook the world? What will it mean for both players, heading into the start of the next season, if the rumours turn out to be true?

Nation’s setter, Kageyama Tobio, sets his eyes elsewhere?

Don’t worry, he’s still setting for Japan. But perhaps he won’t be for much longer! The talented young athlete has found himself in a bit of a pickle, having been caught linking hands with someone other than his beloved boyfriend, Oikawa Tooru.

Oikawa is a very talented setter in his own right, and, interestingly, is one of the most recent additions to the national team roster. Could this have caused a rift between the two men? Did this lead to Kageyama thinking he had no choice but to…

“Tooru-senpai.”

“Yes, Tobio?” Tooru answers with a smile. Tobio’s been using his first name more often lately, and it makes him so happy to hear every time, he can’t help the smile that makes its way onto his face.

“People think I’m cheating on you.”

As the words slowly sink in, Tooru’s smile begins to turn into a frown. Once it hits him—the keywords being Tobio, and cheating, and me—he whirls around so fast he hears something crack.

“WHAT?!”

Tobio very calmly answers, “Have you looked at the news?”

“Not yet,” Tooru shakes his head. He and Tobio had just gotten up, after deciding to have a lie-in, a lazy morning consisting of languid makeouts, wandering hands, and soft sighs. He’s still in the process of waking up now, sipping his tea on the couch as he zones out, staring at his view beyond the window.

Tobio comes over to sit beside him, and shows him the article he has open on his phone.

At the very top, the headline reads: WHAT WILL THE BREAKDOWN OF STAR VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS KAGEYAMA TOBIO AND OIKAWA TOORU’S RELATIONSHIP MEAN FOR TEAM JAPAN?

Tooru picks up his own phone then, from where it is resting face down on the coffee table, and still turned off from the night before. When he switches it on, messages begin pouring in, from his high school friends to people he hasn’t spoken to in years, and even his teammates back in Argentina.

Tooru, are you okay?

You are always welcome here in San Juan.

My wife and I agreed, you can stay with us.

It brings a blush to Tooru’s face, to know that he’s so accepted by his teammates. That despite his birthplace and despite playing for an opposing team in national competitions, they still consider him one of their own.

But to get back to the matter at hand…

“You’re not bothered by this?” Tooru asks, raising an eyebrow. He expected as much—it’s Tobio after all—but still.

True to his reputation, Tobio simply shrugs and says, “It’s not true.”

Tooru considers arguing with him for a moment, but then realises that they’d just end up arguing the same point but in different ways, so he decides to drop it. He looks at the article again on Tobio’s screen, does some quick searching through social media on his own phone, and then huffs.

Seeing these strangers probe into their relationship like this, making judgements on his and Tobio’s characters when they don’t even know them… It makes him incredibly angry. Especially when Tobio has done nothing to deserve it.

His emotions must be written all over his face, because Tobio suddenly ducks his head so he’s blocking Tooru’s phone and looks up at him. “Is Tooru-senpai okay?”

It’s such a pure and genuine question that it catches Tooru off guard. He blinks a few times, then puts his phone down so he can use his hands to cup Tobio’s cheeks instead and kiss him silly.

“I’m better now,” he says after, because nothing cheers him up more than being able to feel his partner’s lips move against his own.

“I’m glad.”

Tooru smiles, then boops Tobio’s cute nose, just because he can.

“But,” he starts, and Tobio glances at him curiously, “I can’t keep letting the media drag my darling Tobio-chan’s name through the mud!” He stands up and holds out a hand for Tobio to take. “Come on, we gotta come up with a game plan.”

“Tooru-senpai,” Tobio calls. It’s still strange to say, but it clearly means a lot to Oi— Tooru, and it makes him smile so brightly every time.

What’s more, Tobio has found himself repeating their names together to himself sometimes, Tooru Tobio Tooru Tobio Tooru Tobio. He thinks they sound nice together. Maybe he understands why Tooru wanted him to use it so badly a bit more now.

“Yes?”

“Have you seen the news?”

Tooru chuckles, but there’s some apprehension in his tone when he responds, “Why am I getting a strange sense of déjà vu?”

“Look, Senpai,” Tobio says, showing his partner his phone. He’d been scrolling through the latest stories earlier, only to find Tooru’s name pop up again and again. Apparently people have been going crazy over Tooru’s short hair, as well as the statement he wrote. Tobio feels proud that his partner is someone who can make such an impact, but Tooru himself appears utterly dazed.

“Uh…”
