“Than? What’s wrong?”
“Hm? Oh. Nothing.”
“Doesn’t seem like nothing to me. You’ve been reading the same page for the past fifteen minutes.”
Thanatos puts his book on the bedside nightstand with a sigh, noting the time: 23:26. He hadn’t noticed it had gotten this late. He turns back towards Zagreus.
“It’s nothing, really. I’m just tired.”
Zagreus raises an eyebrow, but doesn’t question him further. Thanatos is grateful for it, for the way Zagreus always knows when to drop it without Thanatos having to tell him. It hasn’t always been like this; it’s something they’ve had to work on, the source of many an argument in the very beginning of their relationship.
“Talking or cuddles?” Zagreus asks, inching closer to Thanatos in the bed. Thanatos just wraps his arms around Zagreus wordlessly, leaning his head on his chest, his steady heartbeat a lullaby. Zagreus takes him in his arms in turn, pressing his lips to the top of his head.
Thanatos realises then that this is what love is about; that it’s in moments like these that he feels Zagreus’ love the most. He knows exactly what Thanatos needs because he’s put in the effort to learn that for him, and he’s selflessly putting him first, even though Thanatos knows how much he’d like to talk his ear off right now.
Zagreus tells Thanatos how much he loves him all the time, so much so it’s become akin to a greeting, but it’s even better that those declarations are always paired with such gestures that always show Thanatos just how much he means it.
