“Robots on your six, Rivet!”
“More at 4 o’clock, hotshot!”
The two Lombaxes did a perfectly choreographed pivot around each other before open firing on their new targets. Without hesitation, they open fired and took out every single one they saw.
In a matter of seconds, the robots were no more.
Most people would think a firefight is not a good idea for a date. For Ratchet and Rivet, it was the perfect one. Guns; ammo; plenty of sh*t to blow up… another Lombax they knew that understood their concept of fun. What more could either of them ask for?
Word got out that a mega corporation in Rivet’s dimension was turning its defence bots into assault bots after a mystery figure bought out the company. And as misfortune would have it, they were planning on using their newly acquired army to tear apart planetary resources. As soon as Ratchet and Rivet found out, they were eager to jump into the fray and put a stop to them.
Jokingly referring to it as their honeymoon.
So far they had managed to beat back the robots on every planet so far, but this latest one had clearly seen their secret bad guy step up their game. Didn’t bother them, though. More robots meant more fun for them!
And speak of the devil, more were coming in to surround them.
“Oh good! More company!” Rivet quipped with a smirk.
The robots spread out and surrounded them, effectively trapping them in a circle. But neither Lombax batted an eyelid.
“Hey, I got an idea!” Ratchet said. “Take my hand.”
Rivet half-turned to face him and they both smiled. In an instant, she grabbed Ratchet’s hand and held on tight as she braced against him. He began spinning on the spot and she pointed her blaster out towards the enemies before opening fire in rapid succession. The result was a tornado of spinning Lombax unleashing a torrent of plasma bullets that mowed down every single robot.
None of them could breach their way through.
Ratchet then released Rivet, launching her into the air in the process. As she pirouetted a few times, she used the opportunity to holster the blaster and brought out her hammer. She quickly used it to knock the remaining robots about with it.
Ratchet could have stayed and admired Rivet doing her thing, but he had more important things to deal with – he hated that he had to admit that. He turned around and open fired on the robots behind him, blasting each of them quickly and easily. With every one he aimed at, they all went-
CLICK!
Ratchet froze in place when he heard the sound. It had come from the blaster he was using. Nothing had happened. It didn’t fire a bullet or anything. He tried pulling the trigger again.
CLICK! CLICK!
Again, nothing.
The weapon had seized up.
“Oh, come on, you useless piece of sh-!” the male Lombax angrily shouted, cutting himself short of actually swearing. “I paid good money for you! Shoot already!”
CLICK-CLICK-CLICK!
Nothing.
Ratchet looked up from his blaster at the robots in front of him. They were closing in on him. He rolled his eyes and sighed annoyingly. He was going to have to get up close and personal for this fight. Holstering the blaster, he whipped out his Omniwrench and went to town on the robots.
None of them could withstand the tool.
Both Lombax’s smashed up every single robot that came near them. In a matter of minutes, there were none left. In addition, no more were coming. The robots had clearly had enough and pulled out. They didn’t want to push their luck.
Rivet admired her handiwork as she looked at all the scrap metal that was the robots around. But when she turned to look at Ratchet, her smile turned to a frown. For some reason, he looked angry and he was smacking his blaster.
“Come on, you stupid… work!” he yelled. “Can’t you just do what I want for once?!”
“Everything OK, hotshot?” Rivet asked as she approached him.
“No. Everything is not OK,” Ratchet replied. “My blaster stopped working! Right when I needed it most, too!”
“Did you take the safety off?”
“Of course the safety is off! I didn’t train as a commando that one time for nothing!”
“Oh, you’re a commando?” she inquired curiously. She was not aware of this side of Ratchet.
“Hey, once you go commando, you never go back,” he answered.
Ratchet continued to growl and angrily bang the weapon with his other hand. Rivet just watched on with an amused look on her face. Wrong as though it may be, there was something oddly cute about Ratchet getting angry – especially over something so unnecessary like a weapon.
“Oh, Ratchet,” she giggled. “You can be so weirdly loveable sometimes.”
Rivet leant in a decided to kiss Ratchet on the cheek. As soon as she did, Ratchet forgot all about the blaster he was holding and… well, forget about everything. His mind went empty as he stared off into space, his skin beneath his yellow fur turning a bright red colour that could only be just seen beneath.
Rivet cosied in even closer. She saw Ratchet’s reaction and decided to push the envelope. Closing her eyelids halfway, she pressed herself tight against his side, using her tail to wrap around his legs. Her left hand slowly began to explore his front, while her prosthetic reached around to gently stroke the blaster.
Ratchet felt parts of his body tense up…
Before he was even aware of it, the blaster suddenly fired without warning. And in doing so, tore through the midsection of a robot they were not aware of. Having thought he had defeated all of them, Ratchet had let one survive, and in doing so it had snuck up on them.
The sound of shrapnel tearing through metal caught the Lombaxes attentions and they looked just in time to see the robot fall over, a giant hole in its abdomen. Afterwards, they just stood there, wondering what they had just done.
