the universe decides (but it shouldn't be me)

Summary:

Scott doesn’t really notice at first. He’s absorbed with staring at statistics, trying to absorb it all well enough to make a proper decision. He does notice the eyes on him, and he looks up to find everyone looking at him, and then he notices the divinity surrounding him.

Work Text:

It’s been two weeks since 3rd Life, and Scott hasn’t left the MCC server.

To be fair, this isn’t unusual. Most of Scott’s free time outside of whichever server he happens to be living on is spent there, working with Noxite to prepare for the next annual MCC. Not that he really does much; Scott knows how it all works, of course, but most of the development is left up to the Noxcrew, while he makes the teams and hypes up the event. They regularly get nearly a hundred million spectators these days, with the 20,000 in-person tickets being snapped up the instant they go on market. Scott always gives away tickets to previous competitors, of course, and a few personal friends.

Today isn’t a big day. He’s just sitting in the lobby at a folding table with Noxite and the Noxcrew, quietly comparing statistics and debating whether to add or drop some contestants for the next event. The Noxcrew are working as well, fiddling with the code and debating new maps to build. It’s not quiet, but it’s peaceful, as it always is on this server. It is his world, after all, for all that Scott isn’t here nearly as often as Noxite. It’s his world, and it feels like home, no matter how long he’s been gone.

Numbers tick up, and the universe makes a decision.

Scott doesn’t really notice at first. He’s absorbed with staring at statistics, trying to absorb it all well enough to make a proper decision. He does notice the eyes on him, and he looks up to find everyone looking at him, and then he notices the divinity surrounding him.

His first instinct is to look around, to find whichever god has decided to show up in his world, but he already knows that there is no one there. He can feel the divinity leaking from his skin, seeping from the golden core that rests within his formerly mortal heart. The world is clearer and yet softer, all his senses more clear than ever while his minute aches and pains, the sort of things one doesn’t notice until they’re pointed out, have vanished. The pull of gravity feels like more of a suggestion than a rule, as if he could float up into the sky and never come down.

“Well. It appears that I’ve ascended,” Scott says after a long moment.

It really should have been Noxite, Scott thinks as everyone congratulates him. He knows what he’s the god of, after all; apparently MCC has gotten big enough to need a god of its own. And he may be the face of things, he may be the one most people think of, and he knows why the universe chose him, but he can’t help but think that Noxite is the one who does all the real work, who deserves this position so much more than him.

The rest of the day sort of blurs together. He learns to draw back the aura of divinity, to appear as mortal as he had been less than a day ago. He learns the shortcuts for flying and teleportation; all things an admin can do, but made so much easier with a little godly power. He makes Noxite a demigod, with his permission. He deserves it, after all.

The next day, it’s back to business as usual, and if Scott weren’t just that bit more aware of his world, he could forget he’d ever ascended. And if he leaves the first chance he gets, follows fWhip to a new world with no connection to him where he can still pretend to be mortal, well. Can you blame him?

Notes:

Hey yall! I've had this one sitting in my drive for... a year or so? Apologies for not posting it sooner! I wanted to wait so it could be more of a prologue to the Empires fic I had planned for this AU, but I never managed to figure that fic out, so I'm going to be posting the various oneshots that I have sitting around over the next few days. Hope you liked it in spite of the wait!
