Chapter Text
Amity sat at her desk fiddling with a pencil in one hand and an abomination monster in the other. She was meant to be doing her homework but her mind was wndering. Amity watched the leaves on the tree shake from the wind.
Ghost jumped up onto her desk, brushing under Amity’s chin. Amity looked down at her homework. She hadn’t even written her name yet. She leaned back in her chair, sighing.
There was a knock at the door(meaning it wasn't her mother). “Come in,” Amity called out.
Emria came in. She was dressed in her fancy purple dress that their mother always made Emria wear for special dinners. Amity groaned.
“I know I know but you gotta get dressed too, so here.” Emria handed Amity another purple dress. “Do you need help with anything else? Dinner is in twenty.”
“No I'll be good.”
Amity shut the door and studied her dress more closely. There were little abominations embroidered into the fabric of the dress. They shimmered in the light. Amity hated it when her mom made them dress nicely for dinner. This always meant she had something important to talk about. It was never as good for Amity. Tonight's dinner was no different.
Amity made sure to wear her hair up as her mother liked, she put on the gold crescent moon earring and matching necklace set. Hoping it would make her mother happy. She was unfortunately the last one to the table. Em and Ed were already sitting up straight, both dressed in purple attire. Her father looked bored as he messed with the abomination that was serving dinner.
Amity rushed down the stairs to her seat trying to ignore her mother's disproving scowl. Sitting up straight with elbows off the table she did her best to look present and happy.
“Why don’t we all say grace to The Titan before I give the good news? Mmh” Odalia asked. Though there was only one right answer to the question. Emira led grace.
“As you kids know, Blight Industries is now being sponsored by Emperor Belo’s. Emperor Belos is holding a ball at the castle. He has invited our family as VIP guests. It is of the utmost importance that our family looks good, now more than ever. You children must make connections with the coven heads and Belos. I will not have us looking poorly.” Odalia stated so matter of fact.
As the food started being passed out she added this. “Each of you is required to bring a plus one. Bring someone one good. I only want you associating with high-class, powerful witches.”
“Why must they bring someone Odalia, they are just kids,” Alador asked in a hushed tone.
“We must look like we have connections and can be a valuable asset to the Emperor. Plus, they are teenagers, not children.
Alador said no more on the matter and asked Ed to pass the peas.
Amity’s mom kept talking about the importance of family image and whatnot but Amity wasn’t listening. She was playing with the table cloth trying to keep her anger down. All she could think about was the day she had to tell Willow they couldn’t be friends anymore. Her mother had given her this same stupid talk.
Amity got out of dinner early claiming she had lots of homework. She walked up the stairs trying to keep her feet from stomping out of anger. Amity had no real idea what she was doing as she opened her bedroom window.
Ghost mewed at her. “I know Ghost but I don’t care. I’ll worry about getting caught later.” She jumped onto the roof. She made sure to leave the window slightly ajar so she could get back in.
Amity made an abomination catch as she fell toward the ground. She went off sprinting towards the woods.
It wasn't long before Amity made it to a large treehouse far from her house. Amity didn’t notice the fairy lights and light music till she was already in the tree.
The other witch shrieked. Her book flew out of their hand nearly hitting Amity.
“Ahhh sorry Willow! I uh just needed to get out of that damn house.” Amity sprawled herself out of the pillows and blankets of the treehouse.
The treehouse was decorated with tons of pillows, blankets, and random activities. Willow and Amity would hang out here any chance they could get. The house part was high in the leaves so there was no way of telling it was a treehouse unless you knew what to look for.
“Tell me what happened.” Willow began to braid Amity's hair, knowing it would help calm her down.
“SHE DID IT AGAIN! She wouldn’t stop talking about image, Belos, and family. All that crap! She is making us go to this party thing for Belos AND I have to bring a date!” Amity faced Willow, face beat red as she talked. She slowed her words, looking up at the moon. “And-and I couldn’t stop thinking about that night where….” Amity’s voice trailed off. The Image of Amity telling Willow they couldn’t be friends burned through her mind. “I hate her,” Amity huffed. Laying back down letting Willow play with her hair again.
“Honey, that wasn’t your fault. It didn’t even last long, you came and found me the next day to apologize. Couldn’t go a day without me.” Willow nudged Amity, getting a small laugh out of her.
“Ya, and we got this sick treehouse, just to stick it to mum. “ Amity smiled at that. She always felt better after hanging out here.
“How much trouble are you going to get for sneaking out this late? You haven't done this in a long time?” Willow finished one braid and moved on to the other.
“I don't even know but I don't care at this point.”
There was a long silence between the two. They listened to the sounds of the woods together.
Amity sat up facing Willow once she had finished Amity’s other braid.
“So what were you doing up here?” Amity asked.
“OH! I met this new homeschooled kid, she gave me this book to read and I've been sprinting through the series. She taught me some cool stuff. My dad wants me to help tutor her since she is new to the homeschool life. Her mom knew I was one of the only homeschooled kids in Bones Burro.”
Willow grinned at Amity. “But forget about that! Who are you gonna bring to the party? Bosha?” Willow wiggled her eyebrows.
Amity shoved Willow. “Titans no. I could never!” Amity blushed.
“If you never tell her, it will never go anywhere”
“Ya ya but bringing her to this party won't help.”
“Well, your mom knows everyone else sooooo…” Willow didn't drop the crazy grin she had.
“What? What is the grin for?”
“I know who you could ask! The new homeschool girl! Your mom won't know her so you can make up a fancy high-class backstory and if you embarrass yourself at the party you won't ever have to speak to her again!” Willow was practically jumping for joy.
Amity thought about it for a second. “Why would she say yes though?”
“Tell her it’s fake and you just need help, she seemed pretty reasonable. If she says no I can convince her!”
“Why are you so bent on me going with her?”
“...cuz you need more normal friends”
At that Amity through a pillow at Willow’s laughing face.
They hung out till Willow’s father called and Amity released how late it was.
Amity quickly squashed the ambition she made to get up on the roof. Fearing she heard someone walking by. It's just the wind, you are fine. Amity found her bedroom window and pushed it up. SHIT. She pushed hard using all her strength.
She was locked out. Amity was sure she had left it open to get it back. But it didn't matter now. She was stuck. She couldn’t go through the front, her mother would definitely find out. If it hadn't been so cold she would have stayed on the roof. She thought about going all the way back to Willow’s house but it was far.
“Damit,” Amity whispered. Willow had told her about the new girl's house, which was way too close to Amity’s house.
With absolutely no thought at all Amity headed to the new girl's house.
She Knocked on the back door, as it was closest to the woods she had just walked through.
Three key things went through her mind as she waited. 1. What the hell am I doing? 2. It is the middle of the night. 3. Willow never told me this girl's name.
Before Amity could leave, the door opened. “Hello?” The girl was slightly shorter than Amity was standing in the doorway. The girl had short dark brown hair that was extremely messy. She was in a plain t-shirt and otter PJ pants. She looked exhausted.
“Uh.. hi,” Amity said. “I don't know where to start. Um, I'm willow’s friend, and oh wow this is so awkward. I gotta go.” Amity went to leave but the girl grabbed her sleeve.
“Listen you woke me up, might as well tell me. Now, are you planning on murdering me?” Amity shook her head. “Then come inside before we both freeze to death.”
The girl made Amity a cup of hot cider and sat her at the table.
“Let's start simple, I'm Luz, Luz Noceda. Who are you and why are you at my house in the middle of the night?”
“I'm Amity, Amity Blight.” She tried to say it with pride like her mother taught her to. That pride left though as she watched Luz’s face turn to shock and disgust.
“You should have said that before I let you in my house.”
