Three Fools in Love

Summary:

Sakusa, Atsumu and yourself reflect on the moments when you each realised you were in love with the other two.

Work Text:

Sakusa wasn't sure when he'd fallen for Atsumu or you. Or if his moment of realisation that the two of you would be in his life for a  lot  longer than he'd known had only passed recently.

His hand stroked the top of your head. You were cuddled up to his chest, and Atsumu was resting on your torso, the two of you asleep, too tired to continue watching the show you begged Kiyoomi to sit and watch. He reserved a soft, rare smile for moments like this appeared on his lips.

It didn't matter to Sakusa why he loved you two. He just liked the feeling of knowing how strongly he felt for you. But sometimes, he thought back, trying to pinpoint the exact moment. How Atsumu, the guy who'd annoy him to no end every day and not care about his personal space, became so important to him and someone he could be himself around without fear of judgement. Or how you, the one determined to get Sakusa to completely unmask, not just remove the layer over his mouth, to expose his emotions; and the one that could always keep both of ' your boys ' -- you'd affectionately dubbed them that many times -- on their toes better than they did to each other.

Maybe Atsumu's effect on Kiyoomi had blossomed after the three separate camps in high school they'd attended together. The way Atsumu would spare a glance to him at dinner time, something stirring behind the longing gaze, which he masked as a greeting whenever he realised he'd been caught. The way those small moments made Kiyoomi's heart flip and flutter in disgusting ways he'd never admit to enjoying. Maybe during those times when they'd been off the court, and Atsumu praised him, then they'd head back to their shared room, and Kiyoomi would be able to glance at Atsumu's bare back when he changed his shirt. Though, him not showering beforehand did slightly throw Kiyoomi for a loop.

Or perhaps Kiyoomi had fallen in love with Atsumu  after  they'd officially gotten together. The face of fear on Atsumu's face, maybe, when Kiyoomi was on his doorstep after having run all the way to his apartment in the rain, his umbrella barely helping to protect him, after figuring out that Atsumu had been dropping hints about being romantically interested in Sakusa for  weeks  (though this eventually changed to years once Atsumu told him how he'd look forward to the camps and Interhigh competition because he knew Sakusa would be there). How Atsumu became accustomed to Sakusa's domestic habits and even altered some of his own behaviours just so they worked together. The way Atsumu would grumble when Sakusa would get up to go for a run without him because Atsumu had woken up too late.

It was small moments like that, Sakusa believed, that added up over time, evolved into the feelings he felt grip his heart whenever he looked at the blond setter. Whenever they made eye contact, whenever Sakusa caught the slight hint of a smile as Atsumu watched him get into his ' sanitation mode' .

And then there was you.

You, you, you. Sakusa hadn't thought he would have fallen for you when he first met you, unorganised and stressing out more than he thought one person could because you'd just moved into the apartment across from him, and you'd already managed to lock yourself out of it. It was late, you'd accidentally left your keys on the hook  right by the door , which always locked itself once it was closed, and you'd just come home after running late to almost everything that day. Sakusa had watched you collapse against your apartment door, exhausted and almost on the verge of tears. He'd left you there, only for a few minutes, then emerged from his apartment, masked up and freshly applying hand sanitiser, before bringing out a card and some bottled tea. And you'd peered up at him with wide eyes, startled and slightly frightened by this figure towering over your seated self, wearing a stare that looked more like a glare than anything. He'd muttered it was the name and number of someone who could help you get back into your apartment, then some tea for the wait. He was hesitant to give it to you, the tea, only because it was his favourite and the last one he had for the time being.

You'd made it up to him, eventually blossoming the relationship between you. And he realised only a little too late that he was developing feelings. Having seen you and Atsumu having your first interactions -- before you realised he and the blond were dating; before he knew that you'd been enamoured with him since your first encounter -- Sakusa realised what he'd been feeling empty about lately was this. The both of you, together, and with him. And maybe it was then he'd begun to fall a little in love with you.

And Sakusa couldn't even get started on every time he wanted to say ' I love you ' but didn't, held back, waited for the perfect moment. When he took Atsumu for their first actual date, Atsumu had taken his time in the bathroom to make sure he'd washed his hands well enough. When you bought him an entire box of his favourite tea after misreading the measurements, it took the three of you a week and a half to finish them all. When Atsumu had kissed him for the first time. When he kissed Atsumu for the first time. When he kissed you after putting it off for so long, and to make up for the trashy first time you kissed him when you'd gotten drunk. Or when Atsumu and Sakusa finally told you about their relationship, asking you if you'd be willing to try it out with them, to make it work between you all because there was no way any of you would feel complete without the other two.

"You're thinking too hard again, Kusa,"  you pressed soft kisses to his knuckles, humming in satisfaction after each one.  "You've got that little crease between your eyebrows and you're squinting your eyes."

He pressed a soft kiss to the top of your head. You were always so observant when it came to things like that. Sakusa adored that about you.

"Aw, Omi-kun, you thinkin' 'bout us again?"  And Atsumu would tease him with that shit-eating grin.  "Yer such a romantic, even if ya don't wanna admit it."

Sakusa merely narrowed his eyes in annoyance at the blond but allowed Atsumu to press a kiss to his lips and returned the kiss without missing a beat. God, no matter how annoying Atsumu could get, there was something wickedly addictive about whatever love Atsumu was dishing out.

Atsumu, on the other hand, knew immediately when he was in love. He'd always describe it as a sort of electrical connection, and when he loved someone, the electrical connection would spark to life and make his body tingle in a good way.

Atsumu always wanted to be with Sakusa. Ever since they'd met, the electrical current had been alive and burning with such ferocity; Atsumu was afraid that he'd get electrocuted if he stayed around Sakusa too long. He knew it wasn't true, but something about it made Atsumu feel alive.

He'd tried his hardest to get Kiyoomi to like him. Teasing him by showing off his bare torso, the longing glances he always sent any time they were in the same room together, which he would then change last minute to a jovial greeting out of embarrassment for getting caught, the late-night conversations where Atsumu was edging on admitting his feelings for the curly-haired male.

Even after they'd left school, Atsumu had 'casually' checked any form of social media Kiyoomi had, begging for some sort of information, some way to reach out without seeming too weird. And then, thank the heavens, Sakusa was joining MSBY. Atsumu could finally shoot his shot with better odds; more time together meant he could put every plan in action until the wing spiker finally accepted his proposal for a date. But then it all went to shit only a few weeks after Sakusa had joined, when the curly-haired individual showed up on his doorstep, dripping wet after running in the rain, and Atsumu learned that his advances had come off more annoying than romantic. He'd taken the fall for Sakusa's cold the next few days, but the fact he'd finally scored the date he'd been searching for redeemed it all.

And then Kiyoomi introduced you, his neighbour after you'd come by one night to thank the volleyball player for cleaning your apartment with you after not being able to do it alone. You'd offered him a cooked meal to show your gratitude, which Atsumu thought was rather amusing to watch Kiyoomi take.

Bokuto had pulled you in, eager to know of the neighbour Sakusa had brought up more than once during conversations. Atsumu wouldn't lie about being curious because Sakusa had mentioned you more than anyone else he knew, and Atsumu was intrigued. Truth be told, however, he was a little suspicious of you and slightly jealous. But then the night continued, and he let himself observe you, the embarrassed behaviour, too anxious to be placed on the spot, and he was sure he felt the familiar spark of electricity. Faint, sure, but he knew what it was.

And you kept appearing, making yourself known at their volleyball games when you attended, and even meeting  Osamu.  Kiyoomi showed signs of something more than platonic, and Atsumu could feel himself feeling something similar. So when Sakusa brought it up, confessing everything with almost guilt, Atsumu was quick to admit he'd felt the same way and wanted to try something potentially unconventional in the eyes of society. Sakusa set up the meeting, set up dinner, and all Atsumu had to do was deliver the big news. And it was when you agreed, admitting with tearful eyes that you had been so conflicted with your own feelings toward them, that Atsumu's electric connection began to burn white-hot.

(Atsumu knew Sakusa would never admit to hugging you both tighter than he ever hugged anyone before. It was your little secret, just the three of you.)

You turned up to every one of their games, no matter what. And if you couldn't make it, you always found a way to make it up to them. Atsumu knew he loved you, and he didn't hesitate to tell you. It slipped out one night when you were just walking together, only the two of you. He'd looked over, and when you finally caught his gaze, he said it, soft so only you could hear. He could never forget the grin that split across your face before you said it back. He knew you hated grand gestures, you were just like Sakusa that way, and it felt perfect. And then he'd said the exact same words to Sakusa the moment you two got back home.

"Why are you looking at me like that, Miya?"  Sakusa narrowed his eyes suspiciously, his gaze flicking to you for a moment to see if you had a response for him.

"Jus' thinkin' 'bout how much I love ya, Omi-Omi."  Atsumu was ecstatic at the colour that filled Sakusa's pale cheeks and how his dark eyes diverted from the both of you as he swallowed nervously.

Then Sakusa looked back, and there was a slight hesitation.  "I love you, too, Atsumu."

You knew when you fell in love with Sakusa, that was easy enough to pinpoint, it was Atsumu you had trouble recalling. However, you liked to tell them you fell in love with both of them repeatedly every day, though, just as your own way to be a cheesy romantic.

Sakusa had baffled you and, honestly, slightly annoyed you when you first met him. Albeit, he hadn't known you were there, so it wasn't your first official meeting, you'd just been lurking in the foyer waiting for a date of yours to show up. He'd passed you, and you just couldn't manage to tear your eyes away from such an attractive being. But then his whole image had been ruined with a single offhanded comment to one of the people working at the front desk about their ' disgusting and completely unhygienic'  habit. You could only stare in disgust at his back while he stalked off to the elevator, letting out a tsk before turning back around.

(Later, you'd learned this was actually Sakusa talking on the phone to Atsumu, but that wasn't the point.)

Your views on Sakusa only changed after that fateful night when he'd first laid eyes on you. He'd taken pity on you, helped you, offered you a tea, then asked later if you wanted anything to eat while you waited or some company. You had no idea what kind of a man Sakusa was, not at the time, anyway, but you eventually learned it was not something he did out of the kindness of his heart. When he'd finally told you that he felt some resistance to leaving you there, you had been quite surprised, then teased him about it being love at first sight.

Truth be told, Sakusa had utterly won over his part of your heart after a simple encounter you were sure he wouldn't even remember. It was a weekday, and the two of you were only two or three months into officially dating after much beating around the bush. You were at his place, having dinner with him and Atsumu thanks to one of the blonde's spur of the moment invites, and you were waiting in one of the seats at the table. Atsumu was beside you, leading the conversation, and then you'd allowed your eyes to flick over to Sakusa for a split second. And it was all you needed, the momentary view of Sakusa plating the food, his concentrated look, one that could be mistaken for annoyance to the unknowledgeable eye, the way his hands moved with the kitchen utensils. Something so plain, but it had clicked within you, and your expression had shifted instantaneously.

"Holy shit, I'm in love with Sakusa."

And Atsumu had choked on his drink, and you turned to him with horror when you understood your words had come out of your mouth. The two of you stared in tense silence until the man himself came over, glancing between the two of you in confusion. He'd asked, of course, but the two of you deflected it and insisted on just eating your dinner.

Falling in love with Atsumu had been different. You'd known before Atsumu told you, and the reciprocation of his feelings was easy for you to do. Your first thought was when it had been just the two of you for the first time, laying in your bed, Atsumu's fingers absentmindedly drawing on your exposed waist while the two of you brought up random topics of conversation to amuse yourselves. You'd looked at him, and his brown eyes turned to you with a soft grin, and you knew being with him and Sakusa was just  right.  Or, perhaps you'd fallen in love with the setter after a match, and he'd performed a service ace that had won them the game, and he looked so pleased when he'd practically jumped on you. He'd begun to pepper kisses all over your face, asking if you'd seen, telling you how good he was, and saying Kiyoomi should keep his trap shut the next time they talked about serves.

Atsumu had other ideas. Apparently, he could see the moment in your eyes, that realisation, which he described as the swirl of adoration that took over your dilated pupils. Whenever you brought it up, he'd always tell you it was under the lights of a festival he'd made you and Sakusa attend with him, mostly to annoy his brother, but you'd had plenty of fun with them. Atsumu told you, in excruciating detail, if he was fully awake at the time, he'd just ghosted his hand over your waist and turned his head to you. You had initiated the kiss; both your hands, cold from being exposed to the cool night air, had taken his face and pulled him to you. The moment was when you pulled back, according to your blond boyfriend, that you'd stared at him, and you'd mouthed something gently enough he could have mistaken it for your lips quivering if he wasn't already looking. That, apparently, was you mouthing the three little words just for him. You couldn't argue. It made enough sense that you had just gone along with it.

"You're staring at me,"  Sakusa muttered, faking an annoyed expression towards you even though his soft tone gave his concern away.  "What are you thinking about?"

You hummed, turning your gaze to the hand that trailed the same path up and down Atsumu's upper arm.  "Nothing. Just you two."  Sakusa raised his eyebrow, hoping for an elaboration.  "You know I love you two, right?"

"Course,"  Atsumu snorted as if it were a half-humorous joke.  "And we love ya, too, ya scrub."  His eyes barely gave you a second glance as you let out another wistful hum, a gentle smile forming on your face.

"Good. I'm glad."
