Work Text:
Atsumu was as anxious as he was happy when he knocked on his brother’s door, holding a brown paper gift bag and a big flower-shaped balloon. He was wearing his best suit, a navy three pieces suit with a gray necktie and shiny black shoes.
He waited and waited for several minutes before knocking again. He was sure Osamu was at home, he sent a couple of texts on his way there, but the last one wasn’t marked as ‘read’. When he was about to call again the door opened, and a zombie-like Osamu squinted at the daylight outside his home.
“Wow, you look terrible, ‘Samu…”
“As if you were good lookin’, dumbass…” Osamu let his brother inside his home and Atsumu took off his shoes and replace them with slippers.
The house was dark and smelled like tons of air freshener, and there were bags and clothes in every corner and furniture.
“Sorry for the mess, these last weeks felt like a rollercoaster…” said Osamu, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
“Don’t worry, Samu; I’ll help you clean this place. Do you want me to order some food?” Atsumu handed the bag and the balloon to his brother and took off his waistcoat. Atsumu thought Osamu would want some food other than the onigiris his employees had been delivering in his home during his leave from the restaurant.
“Wha…? Wait… Why are you dressed like that?” Osamu finally looked at his usually underdressed brother and noticed his clothes. “Do you have a photoshoot or…?”
Atsumu’s face lit up at Osamu’s question.
“Do I look handsome?”
“Er… Nope” huffed Osamu.
“Mean Samu! I had to wear my best suit! Today is the most important date of my life!” whined Atsumu and Osamu couldn’t help but smile fondly at his brother.
“Of course… Do you want to go to the bedroom? Rin’s there, but he may be still sleeping”
“Ok, I’ll be quiet, I promise! Just let me wash my hands and I’ll be there…”
A few minutes later, the twins walked towards the master bedroom. Just like the rest of the house, the room was dark, barely lit thanks to the thick drapes.
Suna was on the bed, but he wasn’t sleeping. He looked tired and disheveled, but with a soft simile on his lips.
“Hey Sunarin! You look like shit”
“Seriously, Atsumu?” Suna rolled his eyes, but he wasn’t mad at his brother-in-law. “Do you want to meet her?”
At Suna’s question, Atsumu nodded eagerly and slowly made his way towards the bed. Once there, he could see that Suna was holding a baby in his arms. A little girl, with red chubby cheeks and dark curly hair.
Osamu and Rintarou had decided to adopt a baby two years ago, after spending three years happily married. But after months and years of paperwork and bureaucracy, they were finally approved to be the parents of a beautiful baby girl. They had brought her home a couple of days ago and it had been such a surprise to be approved that they had time to buy some clothes, toys, and bottles to feed her. Those first days were crazy for the couple, so Atsumu had arrived to help them with cleaning, cooking, and doing laundry; and of course, to meet his brother’s daughter… His niece.
“Hey sweetheart… My name is Atsumu and I’m your uncle…” Atsumu said softly, and the baby stirred a little at his voice.
“Do you want to hold her?” asked Rin and Atsumu froze.
“Really? Can… Can I…?” Atsumu had never held a baby and was a little unsure, but at the same time; he wanted to learn all he could about childcare to help the couple with their daughter.
“Yes, just be sure to hold her head” said Osamu, who showed Rin the MSBY Black Jackals’ onesie and the bib that Atsumu had brought on the gift bag.
As Rin was handing the baby to a very eager Atsumu, Osamu took a close loot at the gifts. The bib had a couple of cute little foxes stitched in it, and the onesie had pastel versions of the team’s colors and came with a headband with tiny black puppy ears.
“The onesie is too big for her… But maybe she can wear it for your opening game in a couple of months,” said Osamu.
“But you said she’s 18 months old!” Atsumu said while Rin was making sure the blonde was holding securely the baby.
“She’s premature, so she’s a little smaller than other babies her age,” said Rin. “The pediatrician said that she’s healthy and with proper care she will grow as expected; but she may not reach an average height”.
Atsumu looked at the baby in his arms. She was so tiny, so cute. Her eyes were closed, her large eyelashes caressing her cheeks.
“Don’t worry, little princess,” Atsumu whispered to the baby. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a little short. Your uncle Tsumu is going to show you how fun and beautiful volleyball is… And that you don’t have to be tall to be great…”
Without a doubt, that day was the most important date in Atsumu’s life.
